P plate drivers defy peer passenger rules WITH schoolies celebrations in full swing, the State’s peak motoring body has put P plate drivers on notice, warning them not to defy peer passenger rules when behind the wheel. The latest figures released to RACQ by the Department of Transport and Main Roads revealed more than 240 P1 licence holders were caught breaking passenger restrictions during the first half of this year. RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said P1 licence holders under 25 years of age were unable to drive with more than one peer passenger not in their immediate family between 11pm-5am. Ms Ritchie said the rules were not about making life difficult for young drivers. “Young and inexperienced drivers are high risk

road users and are particularly vulnerable to distractions when driving with their peers or at night,” Ms Ritchie said. “Peer passenger restrictions have been effective in reducing the number of crashes involving young drivers.” Ms Ritchie called on parents and carers to talk to learner and provisional licence holders about the dangers of driver distraction ahead of Schoolies Week. P1 licence holders under 25 years-old caught driving between 11pm and 5am while carrying more than one passenger under 21 who was not an immediate family member faced three demerit points and a $365 fine.
