New flight simulator to provide safer training

THE MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) Flight Centre at the Mareeba Airport has recently recieved a new Redbird Flight Simulator in honour of late member Larry Heintz and financed by his aunt Eva Shaver The new simulator was named in honour of Mr Heintz, who was in the flight safety department of the MAF and made a huge contribution to safety both within the organisation and out. Mr Heintz received the Hu-
manitarian Aviation Recognition award due to his outstanding contribution towards humanitarian aviation activities and safety throughout air operations The simulator will be used to help teach and educate student pilots without exposing them to the dangers of the real aircraft until they are ready. The new flight simulator also has dual control which allows instructors to demonstrate handling exercises and scenarios to
students, allowing them to see and feel the correct inputs before attempting it themselves. MAF Operations manager Rene Don is extremely grateful for the donation and others that helped contribute to the new simulator. “We rely a lot on donors to help us purchase equipment and maintain our aircraft and facilities,” he said. “We are extremely grateful to everyone who donates.
“These simulators are a great safety tool; allowing pilots to experience all the proper training without the danger.” The new simulator is also presented in Mrs Shaver’s honour, whose generous gift in her will has enabled the purchase of this new system. The previous system that was used at the facility has now been moved to Arnhem Land and will be used to better educate and train MAF Pilots.
