Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918–2008) is widely acknowledged as one of the most important figures—and perhaps the most important writer—of the last century. His story One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (1962) made him famous, and The Gulag Archipelago, published to worldwide acclaim in 1973, further unmasked communism and played a critical role in its eventual defeat.

The Red Wheel is Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s multivolume epic on the revolutionary cataclysm of 1917 that ushered in the Soviet regime and the events leading up to the revolution. It is arguably the author’s chef d’oeuvre and was described by Solzhenitsyn as “the chief artistic design of my life.” Follow this link to the interactive map for the The Red Wheel volumes, which allows each reader to search for a landmark (bridge, street, building, residence, etc.) as well as to picture the movements of crowds and troops during the crucial days of Revolution.
