Zuidasdok is one of the largest and most complex infrastructure projects in the Netherlands. It includes the widening and tunneling of the A10 ring road and the renewal of the Amsterdam Zuid railway station. The aim of the project is to significantly improve the urban quality of and access to the Zuidas district. The railway station is a key element in this effort. In the new station, the tunnel with stairs rising to the train and metro platforms is widened to form a naturally lit urban arcade enlivened with shops, eateries, and bicycle storage. This arcade, also accessible for

people not traveling by train or metro, is defined at both ends by tall canopies with surfaces of shiny aluminum. In addition, a second, slightly narrower arcade with comparable amenities will be constructed. This leads directly to the new tram stop on the southern side and the bus stop on the north side. Together with the new plinth, the two arcades form a covered route beneath and around the tracks: the Station Square. This pedestrian area with commercial amenities forms the starting point for the further development of the area as the heart of the Zuidas district.

A large part of my time was dedicated to improving the qualities of the bicycle parkings. The station has 3 large spaces, that are integrated in the stations´s structure and systems. Together they offer a total capacity of over 6500 bikes. Tasks for improving the quality of the buildings were: -redesign of the entrance areas, including the employee’s room. This includesthe design of all architectural elements such as stairs, balustrades, glazing, - improving spacial qualities, finishes and designing details. - Improving the layout and capacity of the storage racks.

This high-end 15.000m² sportcomplex in Antwerp encompasses a large variety of recreative and competitive functions; the Benelux’s first competitive inox swimming pools, 5 large waterslides, inox outdoor swimming pools, fitness centre, restaurant, shops and the largest ice-skating rink in Belgium.

Embedded in the surrounding green area of Park Ruggeveld, this building is conceptually perceived as a wooden rectangular volume with cutouts that create connections to the park. The swimming pools are stacked on top of each other and smartly revolve around a central core to keep the building compact.

Situated in one of these cuts lies the canopied entrance space, that functions as a transitional zone between building and park. Slender columns and a fabric roof enhance the lively and open atmosphere. The outside walls are clad in vertical wooden strips, that hyme with the green surroundings.

Design and Materials To make the building resonate with the natural tones and colours of the park, we chose natural colours and materials; rough concrete for the platforms, pillars and plinth, combined with grey-washed thermally modified wood for the faceades. For the floor to ceiling windows, we chose annodized aluminium, with a bronze-tone colour, that blends with the wooden facade. Swimming pools were made out of inox-steel, to give the building a contemporary look and feel. Various tones of tiles and material uses makes the building interesting to explore.

The 15.000m2 building was completely designed in Autodesk Revit and Vectorworks, and was made using various internal and external collaborative design methods. Transparancy plays a big role inside the building. There are many visual links between the various pools, while the central cores offers a lively visual experience, guiding vistors through the swimming pool complex.

BIM Model of the Ice-ring

Using Revit’s Central Modeling, we were able to construct the building with 3 architects at the same time, and we used virtual reality and visualisation of this model to communicate our design to the client. In the technical phase, construction and building installations were made in seperate models, and were added

in the main model to inspect issues and discuss design strategies. We collaborated with 8 other companies in this BIM environment, in order to make a “ready to build” digital delivery of the project.

Among the new developments in the Sportheldenbuurt in Amsterdam, only the silo’s refer to the industrial past of this area. By maintaining the characteristics of the silo’s and programming them specifically for the neighborhood, they can become part of the proud new identity of the Sportheldenbuurt. The presumption in the transformation of the silo’s is that the existing qualities have to be embraced instead of modernized. The existing silo’s and the new volumes on each of these radiate

their own quality, but in terms of material use and design, it is clearly a single entity. This is how both worlds are combined. On one hand, there is the existing rawness of the silo’s, with its unique historical character. On the other hand, there are new warm, ultra-sustainable volumes with a clear contemporary signature. The contrast enhances the quality of both parts.

Each silo has its own orientation and optimal urban development within the neighborhood. The three large main entrances look into the neighborhood from their own angle. In this way, each silo enters into a dialogue with its immediate environment in its own way: both in terms of design and programming. The design process of the new volumes on top started with an abstract vision of the total design: a clear

single entity formed out of two different conceptual objects. Over 20 versions of the wooden rings were made before settling upon the final form. Parametric design tools in cinema 4D and extensive model-making were used to find the best combination of aesthetics, performance and efficiency.

The MAMMOET project is a transformation from the parking and office building at the Noordse Bosje 21 into an attractive, light and green residential building. The building has around 90 apartments and 120 parking spaces. A high-quality retail plinth is located across the entire ground floor. The contrast in scale level between the current building and its urban context is big. The current building is perceived as a rude and grotesque building within the center of Hilversum. The impersonal parking layers reinforce this effect. An important intervention, proposed by

the design team, is to make cuts to the new building block from the third floor so that the building is not experienced as a single building, but as six new residential towers. The two existing parking layers that are being kept are visually executed in the same architecture as the plinth and the living floors. As a result, the building becomes one coherent whole, whereby the parking layers will not be recognizable as such.

Graduation Project The Makkasan train depot, located in the centre of the vibrant mega-city Bangkok, is one of the last undeveloped pieces of land in the centre. The contrast between Makkasan and Bangkok is huge. The city is covered in tall buildings of concrete and steel, with vary narrow urban spaces and lack of room. Nature has almost been completely eliminated, except for a handful of parks scattered across the city. Makkasan however is green, lush and undeveloped. The depot on site will soon be relocated and this brings up the question of what Makkasan should become in the future. Should it be a place for people to escape the business of Bangkok life, should it be a cultural hub or should it be a place 28

for new vibrant commercial functions? For this project, extensive background research has been done into the culture, history and problems of Bangkok has been done. The main question was how the transformation of Makkasan can set an example for the grid-locked city, for a more open and more nature-involved urban architecture. The overall design consists of 3 main components. The transformation of old industrial buildings into a creative and cultural complex for art and design, Residential and commercial towers with iconic architecture and a public park that connects the elements and acts as the new public space for the region.

The design opens up the industrial plot to the city and shows a vision of a different Bangkok; one where nature and buildings go together and where people can actually live inside a park. It aims to preserve the unique traits of the green space and add many new functions and buildings to the plot. The design is a clear reaction to the concrete and steel cityscape of Bangkok as well as a reaction towards the weak connection between people and nature in the heart of the city. The program is a mixture of commercial, cultural and residential functions. They are placed so that each sector has it’s own ‘specialty’. The depot will be the new creative production scene and here are many cultural functions such as expo’s, workshops and outdoor expo area as well. Cars to the area can be parked underneath the new buildings. The park itself only has trails and paths for

pedestrian and cyclists. The public path through the area maintains a distance towards the residential buildings to ensure a certain amount of privacy, while passing by closely to the main towers. In the middle section of the park we find different landscape elements (lake, garden, lawn) and each is linked to one

of the large buildings. Because very ‘designed’ landscape require lots of maintenance and in order to keep the unique attributes of the site, the new landscape strategy should be careful with the placement of artificial landscape.

Iconic architecture The desire to introduce an expression of Thai culture and Thai history is the first aspect of the new architecture, that will be introduced in Makkasan. New buildings, that create a high density urban environment while also respecting the greenery. Adding functions such as

housing, art, food-plaza, entertainment complex etc. The tall buildings in Makkasan are designed as beacons in the urban landscape. From a far distance, people will be able to easily identify the Makkasan area. Their basic shape is derived from the peak on top of many classical thai buildings and from the pagoda typology used in religious

architecture. The choice of materials has been predominantly steel and glass. Various other options have been tried like marble, concrete blocks and wood but the metallic steel and glass look of the buildings from a great contrast with the ground and it also works with the overall expression of the twisted forms.

ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPTS these artworks combine conceptual art and architecture with advanced rendering techniques. For these works I am inspired by architecture, cinematography, pop-culture and science fiction The ambition is to show imaginative places, with real light, material, sense of space and atmospheres, not bound to rules, scale and time.
