he five most important maritime prizes for shipowners, shipyards, students, designers and suppliers were awarded at the Maritime Awards Gala 2013, which took place on Thursday 31 October in Rijswijk, the Netherlands. Television celebrity Anita Witzier, together with the jury presidents, announced the winners in the presence of more than 900 maritime professionals, politicians and the press in The Bread Factory in Rijswijk. Yellow & Finch Publishers was represented by Anoeshka Maaskant and Dennis Vinkoert.

The Dutch maritime industry is facing tough economic times but, due to innovation and collaboration, is able to keep its back straight and to keep the competitive edge. This year’s winners were inspiring examples of that innovation and demonstrate the added value of the Dutch maritime cluster. The five maritime prizes were awarded to: – Heerema Marine Contractors for its offshore construction vessel Aegir (KVNR Shipping Award), – Inland tanker Greenstream of Peters Shipyards (KNVTS Ship of the Year Award),

The winners of the five most important maritime prizes gathered together.

– The Collaborative Design Tools of Jan van der Zee (VNSI Wim Timmer Prize), – Kranendonk Production Systems BV for its Edge Preparation System (HME Maritime Innovation Award) and – Jordy van de Mheen (Royal Netherlands Navy Van Hengel-Spengler Prize).

Boost to Knowledge

Offshore construction vessel Aegir of Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC ) is able to lay pipes in two different modes in ultra deep water, in combination with heavy lifting and construction jobs. The 50,000t vessel is impressive both in size and performance. The Aegir is equipped with a crane that can lift loads up to 4,000 t and lower loads up to 3,500 m below the waterline. Tineke Netelenbos , chairman of the Royal Association of Dutch Shipowners (KVNR ) and jury chairman KVNR Shipping Award comments: “With five nominees this year, Dutch shipowners show that even in difficult economic times, they want a clean and efficient shipping industry. The Aegir of Heerema is in the category of exceptionally innovative, with a major focus on the
