A new standard for sustainable fshing

ECOFIVE is an abbreviation for “Eco-friendly Fishing Vessel”, and has been developed by the team from Bluewild in Ålesund, Norway.

Ulstein develops ft-for-purpose ship designs and solutions for the seafood industry, ranging from coastal vessels to state-of-the-art ocean-going trawlers. Their designs combine decades of experience in the design of advanced ships with in-house shipbuilding expertise.

Fishing company Bluewild is expanding its feet with a new factory trawler and has assigned Ulstein Design & Solutions to design it. Gentle handling of the catch and the lowest possible energy consumption have been important elements in the design development. The trawler will be built at Westcon Yards in Norway.

The stern trawler is of the design type Ulstein FX101 and marks the start of a new design segment for Ulstein. The ship is equipped for 30 people. The 73.2m long ship has a net cargo space of approx. 2,000m3 and is equipped with quadruple trawl and pelagic trawl. The X-BOW® hull design will contribute to less abrupt movements and will minimise sea on deck.

“To avoid large quality losses during the handling and intermediate storage of the catch, Ulstein has developed a new and innovative concept where the catch will fow into the storage tanks from below the waterline.”

The FX101 is designed for nextgeneration demersal trawling operations for whitefsh and shrimp with multiple trawl arrangement. With a DE/DM twinscrew propulsion system, the FX101 has the right amount of power for every operation at any time, resulting in reduced energy consumption. Ulstein’s Catch Reception Solution secures gentle handling.

A great catch

ECOFIVE is an abbreviation for “Ecofriendly Fishing Vessel”, and has been developed by the team from Bluewild in Ålesund, Norway. It is a concept for fshing vessels where the goal is to utilise 100 per cent of the catch, minimise quality losses during handling, and reduce energy consumption. To facilitate the goals in ECOFIVE, Ulstein has developed concrete solutions for a new standard in factory trawlers. Thorough analyses at the beginning of the design process and extensive collaboration with the owner’s team have led to a new confguration for such vessels, adapted to the owner’s desired operating profle and production philosophy. trawler will be the frst fshing vessel to use ECOFIVE with, a.o., a newly developed method for taking the catch onboard. Ulstein has developed a system for catch reception and storage that will, as far as possible, keep the catch alive until processing. By taking the catch directly from the sea and into separate tanks, the loss of quality during hauling and storage in dry receiving bins will be avoided, and the factory can work more steadily at its optimum capacity. Ulstein took on the challenge of designing the maritime platform where the goals in ECOFIVE can be realised”, says Erwin Jager, Sales Manager Fisheries at Ulstein Design & Solutions. “To avoid large quality losses during the handling and intermediate storage of the catch, Ulstein has developed a new and innovative concept where the catch will fow into the storage tanks from below the waterline.”

Fishing vessels for a greener future

The ECOFIVE concept focuses on utilising resources so that nothing is lost from the catch and with minimal use of energy. The main product, the by-

products, and residual raw materials will be of very high quality. “Great emphasis has been placed on fsh welfare and high quality of the raw material. The resources are limited, and we will ensure zero emissions of the residual raw material”, says Tore Roaldsnes, managing director at Bluewild. “An increase in the quality of the fsh product can be achieved by careful handling of the catch, by avoiding squeezing and pressure, and by storing the catch alive until production. The better quality has been solved through a new gentle reception solution for the catch that is better adapted for live storage and with an optimised fow of the catch into the factory. We have also worked to increase the factory area on board so that there is sufcient space for processing the high-quality catch, the remaining catch, and treatment of the residual raw material. The ECOFIVE concept can make the entire fshing feet greener!”, he emphasises. All or part of the ECOFIVE concept can also be used by other fshing vessel owners. “We all need to do our part to make the fshing feet greener, and the design technology solutions from the Ulstein FX101 concept can be used to achieve this”, Mr Roaldsnes concludes.
