Meyer Werft already constructed two cruise ships for the American shipping company back in 2010 and 2011: Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. They became the largest ocean liners ever built in Germany at the time of their completion. And the three vessels in the Triton Class will be even bigger. Disney Wish will showcase the immersive family entertainment, enchanting storytelling and unparalleled service that only Disney can deliver. Disney Wish guests will be able to enjoly all-new enchantment on board, where fantastical worlds and beloved stories from Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar are brought to life like never before. Disney Wish was originally scheduled to sail on her maiden voyage on 9 June 2022, but the ship’s delivery has been pushed back as a result of shipyard delays. At approximately 144,000GT and 1,250 guest staterooms, Disney Wish will be slightly larger than Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. The new vessel will be powered by liquifed natural gas, or LNG, one of the cleanest-burning fuels available. In addition to a reduction of CO2 emissions, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter are almost completely avoided – sulphur oxides are completely eliminated. Currently, all ships in Meyer Werft’s order book are equipped with this propulsion system.

On 11 February, Disney Wish left the Meyer Werft construction hall as it would be moved into the fnal phase of construction. Following the foat out of the new cruise ship, everyone could get a frst glimpse of Disney’s largest cruise ship. The foat out marked a signifcant milestone in the ship’s construction as the shipyard began working on the fnal outfttings. This included furnishings, paint, carpeting, and more. In true Disney fashion, the event kicked of with a special appearance by captain Minnie Mouse along with freworks and music.

“We are pleased to have achieved another step toward completion of the ship with the undocking. It will then be the ffth ship Meyer Werft will have delivered in the Corona pandemic. We are convinced that the Disney Wish will surprise the cruise industry and Disney fans with some special features”, says Jan Meyer, Managing Director of Meyer Werft. According to a press release by the cruise line “It took about fve hours and 110,00m3 of water from the River Ems to food the building dock, followed by a breathtaking exit as the ship sailed out with only 3 feet of clearance on either side.” Disney Wish is the newest, and largest, cruise ship to join the Disney Cruise Line feet. Despite COVID-19 related delays, the highly anticipated ship is ready to set new standards for the cruise industry.

On 30 March, Disney Cruise Line celebrated a new ship build milestone moving one step closer to Disney Wish’s delivery. Disney Wish was moved from the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany to the Eemshaven in the Netherlands. During this manoeuvre, the Disney Wish entered open water for the frst time. The 41km conveyance on the River Ems took about 24 hours to complete. The voyage included navigating locks, drawbridges, and tight clearings along the way. During the Ems passage and the subsequent technical and nautical sea trials on the North Sea, there are initially approx. 750 people onboard. “It is another important milestone for the ship and the shipyard. The entire team is working hard at full speed to complete this special project,” says Henning Stellermann, Project Manager at Meyer Werft.

On 8 April, Disney Wish marked a new milestone beginning her sea trials to test her systems in open water from Eemshaven, the Netherlands. The vessel remained in the harbour for a while, presumably testing thrusters and other systems, before moving into the North Sea. On 12 April, Disney Wish returned to Eemshaven from her sea trials. Disney Wish will fnally set sail in the summer of 2022.

Disney Wish’s interior includes a combination of art deco design and features from the wonderful world of Walt Disney. The interior cabins are ftted with virtual portholes that broadcast the view of the outside – interrupted by occasional visits from various Disney characters.
