DNV selected to lead ammonia bunkering safety study

DNV has been selected to lead an ammonia bunkering safety study by the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) in Singapore. The pioneering study aims to defne a robust set of safety guidelines and operational envelopes that will establish the basis of a regulatory sandbox for ammonia bunkering trials at two local sites. To that end, DNV will team up with Singapore’s leading infrastructure developer Surbana Jurong and the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA). DNV’s work scope will comprise ammonia demand forecasting, bunkering site recommendations, the development of conceptual designs of bunkering modes like truck to ship or ship to ship, HAZID/HAZOP/QRA studies, as well as drafting of technical and operational guidelines.

KM to supply 20 state-of-the-art azimuth thruster units

Kongsberg Maritime is excited to announce that it has recently signed a sizeable contract with Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey to deliver 20 highperformance, future-proof US205FP and US255FP thruster units for installation on new Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugboats. This contract win is particularly signifcant as one of the tugs, a 60-ton Bollard Pull (BP) vessel, is the frst of a gamechanging, next-generation design by the renowned towage company Svitzer and the internationally recognized naval architects Robert Allan Ltd. This new frst-in-class TRAnsverse 2600 tug can generate higher steering forces than other tugs of a similar size, and is uniquely capable of pushing, pulling and manoeuvring in all directions. KM’s reputation for customer fexibility is underlined by the bespoke adaptations to its US205S FP (Fixed Pitch) azimuth thrusters which have been agreed with Svitzer for this order.

Smartgyro Supplies New SG20 Stabilization Solution

High Tech Marine has selected Smartgyro’s innovative stabilization solution for its new frefghting and rescue patrol boat for operation in the harbour waters and along the Monaco coastline. The Italian builder has expanded its business to Solas LY3 certifed rescue boats and professional boats for fre extinguishing and sea rescue, backed by its experience in the design and production of custom and luxury tenders. The Smartgyro SG20 unit will be installed on the highly bespoke 12.85m vessel to efectively eliminate roll in the harshest conditions, facilitating rescue operations and frefghting procedures, while also aiding safe transportation of passengers and improving comfort for the crew. Commissioned by the Monaco Government, the advanced High Tech Marine (HTM) patrol boat will be delivered by September 2022 and enter service immediately.

Damen signs up Erma First

Damen has signed its frst contact with ballast water treatment systems producer Erma First. Greek company Erma First will be supplying its oneTANK, which is the world’s smallest ballast water treatment system. oneTANK uses chemical injection methods to clean ships’ ballast water and therefore represents an important expansion of Damen’s ballast water treatment system portfolio. The contract also marks a key milestone in the cooperation between Damen and the Greek maritime supply sector. Damen Green Solutions has a broad selection of ballast water treatment systems in its range. These ofer ship-owners various capacities and techniques in treating their ballast water. With the addition of the Erma First oneTANK, Damen can provide clients with a solution that is not only small, but also modular. This modularity will be particularly important in Damen’s frst project with Erma First, where the client was looking for a plug-and-play ballast water treatment product that could be placed on the deck of its vessel.

Meyer Werft hands over AIDAcosma

At the end of 2021, Meyer Werft handed over the AIDAcosma to AIDA Cruises, successfully delivering a new cruise ship for the fourth time since the pandemic began.”I would like to thank everyone involved for their dedication and commitment on board, at the shipyard and from the home ofce. We have proven once again that we can build and deliver frst-class ships despite the difcult circumstances caused by the Corona pandemic. With Meyer Turku’s Costa Toscana, it is even the second ship that we as Meyer Group deliver to Carnival Corporation within less than three weeks”, says Managing Director Jan Meyer. The AIDAcosma is already the ninth ship Meyer Werft has built for AIDA Cruises. Like its sister ship AIDAnova, the ship features low-emission LNG propulsion. In 2018, the AIDAnova was the world’s frst cruise ship with this innovative propulsion system.

NES to equip cable lay vessel for zero emission operations

Ship engineering company Peak Marine Tech AS has awarded Norwegian Electric Systems AS (NES) a contract to supply the battery and control systems to enable zero emission cable lay operations from the converted Fjord Connector cable lay vessel owned by Seaworks Kabel AS. Under the contract, NES will deliver a complete battery system and upgrade all control and automation systems on board the vessel, plus equip it to enable battery charging while at port. NES has not disclosed the value of the contract. “This project epitomises NES’ core competence and technology extremely well. In short, we will help to upgrade a vessel in order to realise signifcant reductions in operating cost and emission levels”, says Geir Larsen, managing director of NES.

Huisman signs 2,600mt leg encircling crane contract

Huisman has announced the signing of a contract with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) for delivery of another 2,600mt Leg Encircling Crane (LEC). This follows a previous order, in July last year, for a similar crane. This crane will be installed on the second Wind Turbine Installation Vessel ordered by Eneti and constructed by DSME. The LEC will be outftted with a 155m boom, which – similar to the frst crane – was extended to reach an unparalleled lifting height of 174m above deck. This brings the hook height to approx. 215m above LAT. This, combined with its 2,600mt lifting capacity, gives the crane a degree of future-proofng, preparing it for handling the next generation of wind turbine, with up to 20MW capacity.

Contract for Jan De Nul and Vattenfall

For the ofshore wind farm Vesterhav Nord & Syd in Denmark, Jan De Nul Group will transport and install a total of 41 wind turbines of 8.4MW each on behalf of Vattenfall Denmark. All together, these turbines will produce enough green electricity for the annual needs of approximately 380,000 Danish households. Jan De Nul’s jack-up installation vessel Vole au vent will be mobilised for this installation project. The contract between Jan De Nul and Vattenfall includes the design, engineering, manufacturing, procurement and delivery of the Sea-Fastening. Jan De Nul will also be responsible for the engineering of the RAMS for the marine operations related to the wind turbine installation, as well as the transport and installation of the 41 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines with the jack-up installation vessel Vole au vent.

Damen Shoalbuster 3815 SD delivered

Damen Shipyards has delivered a new Shoalbuster 3815 SD to Caspian Ofshore Construction LLP (COC). The Shoalbuster 3815 SD is one of the newest and largest vessels in the Shoalbuster range and stands out for its ability to operate in waters of no more than 120 cm in depth. Named the Caspian Amwaj, this new addition to COC’s feet will initially be deployed on a project in the Arabian Gulf, the company’s frst in the region. The Shoalbuster 3815 SD is a highly versatile workboat capable of taking on a wide variety of assignments. Handling anchors, buoys and hoses, as well as towing and other general support tasks for the ofshore oil & gas industry, all fall within its operational profle. Suitably equipped it can also undertake dredging and support activities in waters that few other vessels can access.

Royal Bodewes delivers world’s frst hybrid self-discharger

Shipping is on the eve of an energy transition. The goal is clear: to move from fossil fuels to zero carbon energy sources and technologies. The ways in which this goal can be achieved, vary. Royal Bodewes is proudly joining this transition by delivering the world’s frst newly built hybrid self-discharger: MVAasfell. And if it is up to the shipping company, that is just the beginning. On 15 December 2021, MV Aasfell, a 9400DWAT general cargo ship built for Norwegian Shipping Company Aasen Shipping, successfully completed her sea trials. The vessel was delivered on 22 December. Unique to MV Aasfell is that it is hybrid: next to the MGO main engine, she has an electric motor and tons of batteries, allowing her to sail emission-free.

Schottel propulsion systems for frst fully electric U.S. tugboat

Crowley’s new 25m vessel eWolf, the frst all-electric tug to be built and operated in the United States, will be equipped with Schottel systems. As part of the fully integrated electrical package, Schottel supplies two Rudder Propellers type SRP 430 featuring the LE-Drive (“Embedded L-Drive”). MariHub, the data IoT Gateway and monitoring solution, completes Schottel’s scope of delivery. To be constructed at Master Boat Builders shipyard in Coden, Alabama, and designed by US-based Crowley Engineering Services, it is scheduled to enter operations by mid-2023. eWolf will support ship arrivals and departures at the Port of San Diego in California. The propulsion system of eWolf consists of two electrically driven Schottel Rudder Propellers type SRP 430 LE (2,050kW each) featuring propeller diameters of 2.5m. Thanks to this, the vessel will achieve a bollard pull of around 70 short tonnes.

Vard secures new contract for design and construction of SOV

VARD, one of the world’s major designers and shipbuilders of specialised vessels, is pleased to announce that it has secured a new contract for the design and construction of one Service Operation Vessel (SOV) for North Star Group in the UK. The vessel of VARD 4 12 design will be the fourth SOV to be delivered from VARD to North Star for operation on the Dogger Bank Wind Farm in the North Sea. North Star has secured a longterm charter contract to deliver an additional ship boasting its new hybrid-powered renewables feet to support the third phase of the Dogger Bank Wind Farm. The vessel will be built and delivered by VARD, scheduled for delivery to North Star in Q4 2024. Dogger Bank is currently under construction by joint-venture partners SSE Renewables, Equinor and Eni and when completed will be the world’s largest ofshore wind farm.
