NOV has refocused its eforts to maintain a strong presence in the ofshore heavy lif market. The company’s Marine & Constructon business unit recently combined legacy AmClyde and GustoMSC brands to leverage their portolio and expertse, creatng a Heavy Lif group that builds on the company’s global presence and manufacturing capabilites. With the majority of the group located in Schiedam, the Netherlands, supported by a dedicated sales, engineering, and afermarket team in Houston, Texas, the Heavy Lif group is able to work closely with their clients around the globe, while beneftng from the company’s global afermarket presence.

Custom solutions built on reliability

NOV provides the world’s largest installed base of heavy lif cranes. The latest crane designs combine their extensive experience with advanced features such as segmented slew bearings for lower constructon weight and smaller footprint as well as environmentally friendly, fully electric frequency-controlled drive systems, resultng in a state-of-the-art, compettve product. Flexibility is a concept that extends beyond the company’s manufacturing facilites and strategic locatons. Utlising a customised approach to the development of the heavy lif cranes, the team works directly with the client to identfy their operatonal needs and required specifcatons. The crane designs ofer a range of innovatve optons, such as the telescopic crane that can be utlised for both foundaton and turbine installaton or cranes that feature the latest digital solutons for real-tme monitoring, conditon-based maintenance, and remote support. In additon to manufactured equipment oferings, crane engineers and GustoMSC’s naval architects apply their expertse to develop optmised integrated solutons, enabling clients to fnd the most efcient tool for their operatons.

Delivering value for the client

The Heavy Lif group’s improved oferings resulted in a contract award for a 1,600t leg crane from Cadeler in December 2020. Cadeler, a leading turbine and foundaton installaton contractor in the ofshore wind market, has relied on NOV for cranes and jacking systems since the company’s incepton. The installaton of the new crane on the Wind Orca turbine installaton vessel will commence in October 2023. Cadeler has additonally reserved a future opton to replace the crane on the Wind Osprey. “The replacement of the cranes on our O-Class vessels is an important strategic priority for Cadeler. NOV provided an economically and technically advantageous ofer matching our award criteria. The new and improved cranes put Cadeler in a positon to support the future needs of our clients in the ofshore wind market, ensuring a future-proof feet”, says Mikkel Gleerup, CEO of Cadeler.

Momentum in the market

The Cadeler contract is a testament to the reliability and capabilites of NOV’s cranes, which feature a lifing capacity of 1,600t at 40m radius and a lifing height of 162m above main deck. “The award for the crane replacement project is of strategic importance for our Heavy Lif group. It underlines the long-term relatonship between Cadeler and NOV, and it’s a great step towards strengthening our contnued presence in the global heavy lif market”, states Nils van Nood, Vice President of Business Development, Marine & Constructon at NOV. Having been recently awarded a 2,500t telescopic leg crane for OHT Vind 1 while handling ongoing operatons with Shimizu Corporaton for a crane featuring the same specs, NOV has capitalised on the momentum in the market. As ofshore wind operatons contnue to ramp up at a remarkable pace, the company is well positoned to contnue their recent success in the heavy lif market into 2021 and beyond.
