Welcome to the summer edition of our Simply South Hams magazine, showcasing a selection of our latest South Hams properties available through our six branch network. The recent fine weather has encouraged locals and visitors alike to enjoy the diverse and abundant leisure pursuits this dynamic region of the Westcounty enjoys. Many of you will recognise the front cover photograph of Blackpool Sands, which is one of the 2018 Blue Flag Award beaches in the British Isles - all of which have to meet the stringent criteria to qualify. The current property market is benefitting from a period of relative stability, notwithstanding Mr Trump and Brexit, with muted inflation and stable interest rates and few competing factors for available funds. Correctly priced and marketed properties are finding buyers. The property market is being somewhat hampered for various reasons, by a lengthy transaction process – in short, the time taken for a property to exchange/complete from the point at which the sale was agreed can be approaching 4 months. Very high on my advice list would be “it’s never too early to talk to your property solicitor” once you have decided to sell. To that end, in addition to speaking to an experienced estate agent we would strongly recommend advising anyone considering moving to contact a solicitor as soon as possible. The sooner legal issues are addressed, the better prepared you will be to sell to a committed buyer, as your solicitor will be ready to answer any questions that they will be asked by a buyer’s solicitor – failure to be ready to sell is the single biggest factor in causing delays to the process. Gale Force We speak to South Hams based artist Jackie Gale about her work and love of the local area.

Jackie Gale's art journey began in the Midlands, where she was born. A childhood spent surrounded by easels, paintbrushes and creative projects, Jackie was forever creating collages from anything she could find including garden cuttings, fabric trimmings and cardboard boxes. Her resourcefulness, which she feels stems from those early years, can be seen today in her creative use of extraordinary textiles within her work. Despite her love of art, Jackie pursued a long and happy career as a registered nurse for the next twenty years until a major illness turned her life around and forced her to rethink her life and lifestyle. It was then that she decided to revisit her love of art with sketching and sewing. Little did she know then that this pastime would become her future and her passion.

The creativity and colourfulness of Jackie's character is reflected in her work, which now has a national and international following including many collectors. She enjoys blending her passion for naive art with textile creativity to tell a story of a place or theme, in her unique style. Favourite artists who continue to inspire her for their storytelling ability include Fred Yates, Henri Rousseau and Bryan Pearce. Narrative is an essential component of Jackie's work and she tells her story with texture. Much of her time is spent continually looking for new and unique materials to incorporate into her work to give it added interest, depth and humour. She also tries to use textiles relating to the topic or theme she is working on, for example, old fishing nets for a harbour scene. She believes this adds authenticity as well as visual interest. Jackie lives in the South Hams with her husband and three children. It is here that she enjoys endless inspiration from the local seaside villages to the coves and harbours of neighbouring Cornwall. To her mind though, every place has a story to tell and inspiration is never far away. She constantly sees creative opportunity and exciting challenges and her sketchbook is always close to hand. In 2015, she was extremely honoured to be awarded 'Best Up & Coming UK artist' by the Fine Art Guild. Today, she has her own gallery in the South Hams where she exhibits a collection of original work, prints and gifts. Visitors will always receive the warmest of welcomes and get to see latest pieces she is working on. You can view Jackie's artwork at the forthcoming Yealmpton Show on Wednesday 25th July where she will be exhibiting within the Marchand Petit marquee.

Her next main event will be a solo exhibition at Plymouth's Theatre Royal throughout December and January. Definitely not to be missed!
