SOUTH HAMS’ LEADING E STAT E AG E N T

Welcome… TO OUR VERY LATEST ISSUE OF SIMPLY SOUTH HAMS South Hams – a sheltered place Whilst we are in unchartered waters in regard to the political decisions of the country, Marchand Petit are finding that 2019 has started in a healthy vein here in the South Hams with plenty of activity on second hand stock, new homes and with the letting side of our business. I believe that our particular patch suffers less than some areas of the country, being somewhat buffeted when it comes to the highs and lows of the property market. We appear to be relatively protected here in the South Hams as our area is sought after by those relocating away from London, seeking a change of lifestyle and also by those looking for a second home to escape to when the pressures of modern day living becomes too much. ‘The ‘staycation’ has become a reality and with such a lovely summer last year, tourist numbers are again expected to rise. Interest in new homes being built in our area has shown a significant rise and with the exciting new developments we have been instructed on we are very confident that this particular sector of the market will flourish in 2019. Please refer to the New Homes section which will give you further information on up and coming developments. The South Hams is a picturesque area to spend your leisure time, having a wealth of opportunities from distinctive sections of coastline encompassing small sandy coves, miles of stunning coastal paths to enjoy and beautiful estuary towns with individual shops, boating opportunities and summer regattas and food festivals. Some of the finest restaurants and pubs are run by ‘celebrity’ chefs and you are never at a loss to find the freshest fish caught the same day. Marchand Petit are committed to making the buying and selling of property as pain free as possible, taking great care to smooth the process from beginning to end. Our experienced and carefully trained staff are always on hand to discuss any questions you may have and will take the time to make sure you are completely at ease before marketing your property. Equally, should you be looking to buy a home here in the South Hams, they will provide you with expert knowledge and understanding of the local area and communicate regularly throughout the transaction.

At Home in the South Hams

John Frankland speaks with Prunella Martin of Marchand Petit Estate Agents…

S

omeone once said Prunella Martin is a "discerning dynamo" and if you ever meet her you will agree! The combination of her vast experience, drive and positive character is delightful and reassuring when you are selling or buying a property. Supported by her team in the Prime Waterfront & Country House Department (PWCH), Marchand Petit have over 53% of the market over £750,000 in the South Hams.

Prunella began her career in general management and fell, by accident, into estate agency more than 15 years ago. In 2007, her husband Mike and Prunella decided to sail off to Norway for a couple of years. On their return a few years later to the UK for family matters, the South Hams seemed like the perfect place to live because of their love for sailing and the coast. Prunella was then appointed Director of The Prime Waterfront & Country House Department (PWCH) for Marchand Petit which was established at the beginning of 2010. This new specialist department dealt with all properties with values of over £750,000 in the South Hams area and has grown in sales from 24 in the first year to over 70 houses in 2018. Prunella describes herself as being in a very privileged position and she enjoys dealing with stunningly beautiful homes and interesting people in this gorgeous area of the country.

The PWCH Department is headed up by Prunella with a superb team supporting her, Helen, Daniel and new arrival Sara. The original concept of the Department was to work alongside the other 6 Marchand Petit offices creating a specialist department with in-depth knowldedge of the high end of the property market, resulting in clients having two estate agents working for them exclusively. This search and selection service goes above and beyond other estate agents and Prunella believes that Marchand Petit are the only estate agent in the South West to offer this service. Prunella describes herself as passionate about people and houses and putting the two together works wonderfully in both a business sense and on a personal level. The South Hams is truly a unique area, Prunella thinks her drive to work with the stunning Kingsbridge estuary on one side and rolling, green hills on the other as giving her a honoured start to every day. Her area stretches from Plymouth to Torquay and from the Moors to Salcombe. She works in unison with the other Marchand Petit offices based in Kingsbridge, Totnes, Modbury, Newton Ferrers, Dartmouth, Salcombe and London. The Modbury and PWCH division specialise in the Burgh Island and Bigbury area. The iconic landmarks and uniqueness of this area requiring a lot of local, specialist knowledge.

Prunella was keen to explain how her Department works. One of the key factors which has evolved over the years is the operation of a “Whisper List”. This allows people, who are at the top of the market to develop a relationship with Prunella and her team to find their absolute dream property. If that property is not currently on the market then Prunella and her team will find a property that matches the clients dream. Recently they have sold an outstanding property near Bigbury with its own beach, boat house, views over Bantham and Burgh Island after only 5 viewings - the property did not effectively come to the open market!

mooring rights. Prunella explains that the team love the challenge of meeting new clients who have a specific dream property in their heads and then helping them find it - our very own ‘Kirsty and Phil’, right here in the South Hams.

Prunella is proud and thankful to confirm the property market at this exclusive level has been superb this year. The Department doubled its turnover in the first 3 months of 2018 and has seen the re-emergence of high money investors/purchasers.

Finally, Prunella and I chatted about what she loves most about living in this beautiful place? Prunella is a keen sailor and with husband Mike loves to take off as often as possible in the waters around this very special peninsula. PWCH Department passionately supports many of the local agricultural shows during the year. Last year Prunella and the team attended the Yealmpton Show and found themselves working in partnership with the team from Burgh Island Hotel with their hospitality support. Duncan and the team at Burgh Island Hotel have opened the hotel up to a much more local audience and that is to be applauded.

The variety of property in the South Hams can be anything from a stunning Georgian townhouse to a spectacular beach house, to farms, properties with substantial land, rectories or waterfront properties with

Prunella is a fun loving person who it is easy to like and work alongside. The success of the PWCH Department is a testament to her tenacious and enthusiastic attitude - not to mention lots of hard work!

High Spirits

Inspired by the coastal vitality of Salcombe and its shipbuilding heritage for exotic trading routes, Salcombe Distilling Co creates exceptional gins at their waterside distillery on Island Street, Salcombe; one of the world’s only distilleries directly accessible by boat.

Salcombe Gin is distilled on Provident, a 450l bespoke copper pot still which stands proud behind glass doors at the distillery for all to see whilst enjoying a ‘Salcombe & Tonic’ in their tasting bar which also overlooks the Salcombe estuary. Next door is the Salcombe Gin School where visitors can learn about distillation and create their own bottle of gin. New to their collection of gins is their limited edition Voyager series. Each release from the series has been developed in collaboration with a world-renowned chef or iconic winemaker to reflect their individual personality and style. The first release ‘Arabella’ was developed with Michael Caines MBE, one of Britain’s most celebrated and accomplished chefs and holder of two Michelin stars for 18 years. Restauranteur, food writer and chef Mark Hix MBE collaborated with Salcombe Gin to produce ‘Mischief ’ to commemorate the 10th anniversary of HIX restaurants. Salcombe Gin’s first sloe and damson gin ‘Guiding Star” was produced in collaboration with iconic Portuguese wine-maker Dirk Niepoort. 2019 will see two further releases from the series! This summer Salcombe Gin will expand their exclusive Gin Butler Service and Gin Delivery Service. Salcombe Gin Butlers will be available to prepare signature Salcombe Gin cocktails and provide exquisite liquid refreshment for guests not only on board owners’ yachts but also at properties in the Salcombe area (available from £500.00) Those that wish to create their own ‘Salcombe & Tonic’ can order a stylish Salcombe Gin Hamper Delivery for the ultimate sundowner onboard. The New Range Rover Evoque

The original luxury compact SUV has got even better. At home both in the city and the country, the new Evoque joins the Range Rover family with a choice of hybrid-electric engines.

H

aving pioneered the luxury compact SUV market, with global sales of over 772,096 (20% sold in the UK) and more than 217 international awards, the new Range Rover Evoque is a sophisticated evolution of the original. Combining unrivalled Range Rover heritage with cutting-edge technology - designed, engineered and manufactured in Britain - it meets the needs of today’s customers.

The introduction of jewel-like elements such as super-slim Matrix LED headlamps provide a more sophisticated front and rear lamp graphic. Flush door handles add to the smooth, sculpted aesthetic, while sweeping directional indicators create a purposeful signature. Optional R-Dynamic details and burnished copper accents add to the unique appeal. Inside, the finely crafted design integrates uncluttered surfaces and simple lines with carefully curated materials to create a luxurious, minimalist, digital cabin. Technical textiles that use recycled plastics are offered as premium alternatives to leather, such as a Kvadrat wool blend and Miko Dinamica® suedecloth, as well as Eucalyptus and Ultrafabrics™ options. The cabin is designed to be a calm and serene space, ensuring comfortable, healthy and happy occupants, with technologies such as the twin touchscreen Touch Pro Duo system, featuring new, faster software, 16-way seat controls and cabin air ionisation that complement the increased interior space. The footprint is almost identical, yet built on Land Rover’s new mixedmaterial Premium Transverse Architecture, there is more interior space than before. A longer wheelbase yields 20mm extra rear kneeroom and an increase in small item stowage – the larger glove box and centre cubby can now fit tablets, handbags and bottles with ease. The luggage space is 10 per cent larger (591 litres) as well as much wider and easily fits a folded pram or set of golf clubs, with space

increasing to 1,383 litres when the flexible 40:20:40 second-row seats are folded. The new architecture has been developed for electrification, with a 48volt mild-hybrid available at launch and a plug-in hybrid model offered around 12 months afterwards. The mild hybrid powertrain is a first for Land Rover and works by harvesting energy normally lost during deceleration thanks to the engine-mounted belt-integrated starter generator, storing it in the under-floor battery. At speeds below 11mph (17km/h), the engine will shut off while the driver applies the brakes. When pulling away, the stored energy is redeployed to assist the engine under acceleration and reduce fuel consumption. Available across the range (when specified with automatic gearbox) of four-cylinder Ingenium petrol and diesel engines, the mild hybrid delivers CO2 emissions from as low as 149g/km and fuel economy from 50.4mpg (based on the new NEDC Equivalent WLTP test procedure). If the customer chooses the 150PS diesel engine with front

FEATURE • 075

wheel drive, Evoque only emits 143g/km. An even more efficient plugin hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) model and three-cylinder petrol Ingenium engine will also join the range next year.

Every bit a Range Rover, the compact SUV combines all-terrain capability with all-weather assurance. New Evoque features All-Wheel Drive, as well as a second-generation Active Driveline with Driveline Disconnect to enhance efficiency and Adaptive Dynamics to deliver the optimum balance of comfort and agility. Terrain Response 2 - technology first found on full-size Range Rover - automatically detects the surface being driven on a adjusts the set-up accordingly, while Evoque can now wade through water up to 600mm (previously 500mm).

The famed Range Rover command driving position has jumped into the digital age, with a segment-first ‘ClearSight rearview mirror’ that transforms into an HD video screen. If rear visibility is compromised by passengers or bulky items, the driver simply flicks a switch on the underside of the mirror and a camera feed from the top of the car displays what is behind the vehicle in crisp high definition. The screen provides a wider (50-degree) field of vision and superior visibility in low light.

The new Range Rover Evoque is also the first in the world to feature Ground View technology, which effectively makes the bonnet invisible by projecting camera imagery onto the upper touchscreen to show the driver a 180-degree view under the front of the vehicle. This is useful when negotiating difficult parking spaces, navigating high city centre

In Conversation

Steven Hall of Simply South Hams speaks with artist Becky Bettesworth, about her artwork, inspired by the classic travel and railway posters of the 1930s. Her vintage seaside posters are modern and fresh, showing a place off at its best, with a nostalgic twist of a bygone era. Were you good at art as a child? I loved art as a child and drew all the time. I used to love comics, Snoopy and Garfield and try and copy them. I’d look at the front and back of the cereal box and copy and draw over breakfast. I’d draw at school and home, doodling and sketching. I am dyslexic so I found every other lesson hard except for art. I always loved art and at primary school it was what people connected me with and was part of who I am and what I was good at. I knew I wanted to grow up to be an artist.

Did you always intend to make art your career? Yes, absolutely although I do remember my Dad advising me to think about getting a proper job as he knew it was a hard road ahead to make it as an artist. I’ve always known it’s what I wanted to do, and have had self-belief, determination and tenacity which is needed through challenging times where self-doubt and criticism can knock you down as you grow, evolve and develop as an artist. It certainly doesn’t happen overnight and it is a journey which you have to be patient with and enjoy the ride!

Where did you train? I did art as GCSE and A Level and then did an art foundation course at Chester which I loved which led me to a degree at Bath.

What was your career after you graduated? After my three years in Bath I knew I wanted to go to London and was offered some unpaid work experience with an advertising company, where after a month they offered me a full-time job as an art director, helping to come up with conceptual ideas for

098 • FEATURE

campaigns and seeing them through to final fruition. Working with Cadbury’s, Guinness and Coca Cola, which was an awesome fun experience which consisted of long long hours where the client would fundamentally have the final say over the creativity.

When did you decide on a freelance career? At this point me and my future husband decided to take an adventure to New Zealand, which proved to be one of the best decisions in our lives! We applied for a one year working visa and loved loved loved our time out there. It is here that I met lots of other artists and saw lots of different art and thought “I could do that”!

When did you move to Devon and why there? So, when we came back Matt joined the family business of chartered surveyors, Bettesworths in Torquay and I started my career as an artist. Building up a portfolio of work and approaching galleries and publishing companies. I experimented in different styles, doing life drawing classes and working with pencil, pastel and acrylics. I took part in exhibitions and was asked to exhibit with a London gallery and The Affordable Art Fair in London. I then became a full time Mum and had three wonderful children Heidi, Bertie and Tom so the paints had to be put away for some time as I enjoyed being a full - time mum of three..

Describe your family and life in the West Country. Our life in Devon consists of making the most of where we live and outdoor living. We love surfing, paddle boarding and cycling

I create in one room which is light and airy and then I have another room which is my mini warehouse/distribution/packing room, where all the orders from my website and shops are processed.

How would you describe your work and its style? My work is reminiscent of the 1930’s travel poster art but done in a modern contemporary way, with the use of soft Pastel colours. I have always loved this art and the nostalgic feel of that wonderful bygone era.

and bbqs on the beach are always great too, taking Squiggle our golden retriever puppy with us along the way.

How much time do you spend each day painting? I spend as much time as possible, but family and business administration tend to make this tricky. My ideal day is to have no interruptions and create none stop. Sometimes I can work until 2am in the morning when I'm in the ‘zone’. My day always starts with either a morning yoga, run along the coastal path or walk with Squiggle.

Do you have a studio? Yes, I do have a studio which is in my home, which is lovely.

What sort of things do you paint now? Having established a range of seaside destination posters I am keen to continue with this but also create some Limited Edition pieces, add to my Special Collection Range and take on more commissions.

And what inspires you about South Devon? I am inspired by South Devon because this is where we are lucky to live. However, I am inspired by the beauty of the whole of the West Country, both coastline and countryside. I love the fact that this area is so unspoilt. Which mediums do you work in? I work doing pencil sketches and then create my artwork drawing on the computer, so it is a real mix of old and new. Where is your work sold? My work is sold on my website www.beckybettesworth.co.uk and I supply to boutique shops and galleries across the country.

Picture Perfect

We all have moments in our lives that are special, and we may try to preserve them in our minds or be lucky enough to have a camera to hand to record them. But for artist Sherree Valentine - Daines, one of life’s great joys having the ability to capture those moments on canvas as, she says, ‘crystallised memories’, and allow us to treasure them for years to come.

S

herree Valentine - Daines is undoubtedly one of the contemporary art world’s most distinguished figures. She has been described as ‘the face of modern British impressionism’ and ‘the finest figurative artist we have here in the UK’ (Art of England); she has won a multitude of high profile awards and she has been officially voted the UK’s leading Modern Impressionist. Sherree boasts an impressive array of famous admirers which includes several members of the Royal family, but has also won over the hearts and minds of the general public, becoming the artist of choice for celebrity portraits and TV events. Alongside her original artwork, sales of her canvas editions have placed her in the top 5 living best-selling artists.

But Sherree is also a warm and inspirational individual, and her sunlit artwork reflects the things she loves and believes in, one of which is the constant beauty and charm of the coastline of Britain. She says: “Although I am often described as a figurative artist, in many ways the setting for my figures is as important as they are. I have always felt drawn to the sea both personally and artistically, and it has been a key element in my work. As an impressionist at heart, I find myself attracted to the way the colours shift and blend in a way that is almost impossible to capture - a fabulous challenge!” The first Summer after she graduated from art college, Sherree moved down to Cornwall, eager to immerse herself in the SouthWest’s well documented and thriving artistic community. Blessed with the best of British weather, she travelled around the enchanting harbours and fishing villages, painting the impossibly

126 • FEATURE

blue skies, beautiful countryside and the children on the beaches. This experience marked the beginning of her love of painting in a seaside setting. In addition to the natural environment Sherree was deeply impressed by the artistic life of St Ives. The St Ives School of Painting is now well known and credited as one of the UK’s most exciting modern artistic movements. It was established in the historic Porthmeor studios in 1938, but it was when the war broke out in 1939 and Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson moved in that the future began to take shape. St Ives quickly became a key outpost for the abstract avant-garde movement and after the war many young, pioneering artists gathered in the area. The term ‘St Ives School’ has become particularly associated with this group of artists which includes such familiar names as Terry Frost and Patrick Heron. Of course by the time Sherree was attracted to this area, the cast of characters and the style of artwork had changed, yet the spirit of the St Ives School still remained, as it does today, and she mined a rich seam of knowledge, inspiration and technical skill. Cornwall has left an indelible mark on Sherree. Every Easter for the last 30 years her family has gone down to St Ives in the summer with a big group of friends. She always takes her paints and easel with her and loves to paint at every opportunity. She has painted her own four children playing on the beaches many times over the years, and the area is full of memories and history for her; this emotional connection adds an extra layer of warmth, intimacy and affection to everything she paints.

There is a strong sense of life and activity in all Sherree’s seaside tableaux. When she paints children, she encourages them to keep moving, to behave as they would if she was not there and they were unobserved. She says: “If your subject is moving as you sketch and photograph, it allows you to capture their movements in a way that somehow a camera doesn’t quite do. I can fill a sketchpad with what I call ‘five second sketches’ in preparation for some of these paintings – as you can probably imagine children with fishing nets paddling in the shallows don’t stay still for an instant!” Sherree continues to be one of our finest artists. Despite the ever-changing demands of artistic fashion and a fickle contemporary art market, she has never compromised in her artistic aims and values, and as a result has achieved a formidable status in the art world. “In terms of my reputation I do feel that I have been quite fortunate. Once your work makes it into major galleries and people start to sit up and take notice, you know that you are making an impact. This may sound a little strange, but I think I’m seen as a genuine painter, someone who buys into the whole concept of observation, interpretation, beauty, form, compositional balance, and uses the trusted medium of oils on canvas. This perhaps sets me apart from some artists at work today, and makes me appear to be a traditionalist. And insofar as I adhere to these traditional artistic values, I suppose I am. But I do operate strictly within the parameters of modern life, painting decisive moments from rugby matches or producing portraits of TV presenters in front of cameras! - in a way that I hope, believe, will continue to communicate with a contemporary audience.” Sherree’s unquestionable virtuosity has made her a favourite with many celebrity collectors including members of the British Royal Family and former Prime Minister Sir John Major. Many famous names

In 2016 Sherree fulfilled one of the most rewarding commissions of her career, creating a beautiful scene in which the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are shown walking through the historic setting of Windsor Home Park. The painting was commissioned as a 90th birthday gift for Her Majesty, and Sherree was invited to attend a private reception at Windsor Castle to personally present it to her. She was also invited to paint the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace for the Not Forgotten Society.

Last year she was honoured to paint a commemorative 100th birthday portrait of Dame Vera Lynn, and her most recent sitter has been celebrated British explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

Sherree is internationally celebrated as the country’s leading society painter and enjoys a longstanding relationship with Royal Ascot. She first attended as a child, and has been painting there regularly for many years. In 2016 she was commissioned by Champagne Bollinger to create a tribute to this great occasion, and they used her beautiful painting as the centrepiece of their 2016 campaign. Her many other sporting credentials include portraits, official commemorative paintings, and a commission from the BBC to paint the Ashes at all six test grounds which was televised live during the whole test. Sherree has had solo shows at such prestigious venues and institutions as the Tate, the Lord’s Museum, the Royal Portrait Society, the Royal Marine Society, the Royal Society of Watercolours, the Hesketh Hubbard Society, the Society of Women Artists, the Institute of Oil Painters, the Pastel Society, the New English Art Club and The Royal Academy, and she has won many prizes within these societies.

Her first solo show at the Barbican previewed on the opening night of Les Miserables, and made the front pages of The Times and The Telegraph. She has been interviewed by the BBC and ITV many times, and is a familiar face on our televisions. She has appeared in programmes as varied as ‘To the Manor Bowen’ and

Tips to make your home ready to sell

Recent research conducted by Anglian Home Improvements, ascertained exactly what buyers look for (and notice) when viewing a property, found that: 27% of buyers focused on furnishings and decor when viewing, while a similar 24% focused on clutter and mess. So, it goes without saying:

132 • FEATURE

Tidy personal items away and declutter – Clutter is a big distraction with 28% of female house viewers focusing on the clutter within a property. Clutter, mess and personal items drew potential purchasers’ eyes away from the property, distracting them from the important elements of the room. 32% of men focused on the structural features of the building and the grounds so –

Keep an eye on the detail - Make sure boundaries are easily definable and that the gardens are well presented. An exterior of a property can tell many stories so a lick of paint, clearing the guttering as well as tackling any of those nasty maintenance issues will help buyers focus on the positives of the property and not any negatives. Internally make sure everything is in good working order. Blown light bulbs replaced, shutters shut, sliding doors open and close with ease, light fittings secured. Every time a buyer notices something which is negative their concerns grow over the integrity of the property and their vision of themselves living there diminishes; so attention to detail is key.

The view from your windows – With nearly a fifth of the house hunters’ time spent looking out the window, one of the top tips was to make sure the view from your windows is up to scratch.

Sunnynook: Selling a great location & securing an ideal home

I

t was W. Somerset Maugham who said “It’s a funny thing about life: If you refuse to accept anything but the very best, you will often get it.”

Peter Lowe had recently retired from Disney and made the choice to relocate and set up the main family home in Devon. Having redeveloped their holiday house to exacting standards he knew they were selling a desirable, waterfront lifestyle when he opted to move from the impressive coastal location to a more accessible town destination. Already on the market with an international agent, Peter wasn’t having much luck selling but the dynamics changed and emphasis shifted when he appointed Prime Waterfront & Country House. Peter elaborated: “With retirement beckoning and time on my hands I wanted to get involved in a neighbourhood, where better

138 • FEATURE

than a South Hams Market Town. Modbury offers so many opportunities to get involved in community life and by changing to a local agent, with national knowledge, I’m delighted to say I not only sold through Marchand Petit but bought as well.” “By asking lots of pre-qualifying questions the Prime Waterfront & Country House Team empathised from the start on our requirements, drivers and motivation. I would be more than happy to let any future vendors know about the wonderful service that I received and how the sale and purchase dove-tailed together smoothly, due to their efforts and impetus.” Concluding: “Indeed, the connections and friendships continue, Marchand Petit support many local events and one pioneering Scout, Poppy Edwards, received a donation from Prunella towards raising the fee to attend the 24th World Scout Jamboree being held in West Virginia, USA next summer, an introduction that came about through the Modbury Players Theatrical Group - with Marchand Petit you can expect more from your estate agent, they don’t just say goodbye at the front door.”
