Planning touches upon every aspect of our lives…the good areas and the difficult ones. Planning is also a part of church life, but there is a sacred quality to it that shapes how we approach it.

This does not mean we ignore the realities we are facing. We are facing a new financial reality in which the subsidies we receive from Collegiate Church have been greatly reduced (I hope you’re following the bud get information we’ve sent on this, see link at bottom of page, and there is more to come in our financial plan). I know this creates some anxiety and people are left wondering how we will meet our budget. We cannot ignore the chal lenge this presents. At the same time, we do not want it to limit what we believe God can do through us and with us. I have a deep trust that God has big plans for us, and big plans leave room for new possibilities. Small plans confine what is possible. As it says in Isaiah, “I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” (43:19). My prayer is that we all are thinking big and on the lookout for new possibilities! As we prayerfully discern our way forward, may our planning continue to invite the hope God gives us to shape our future.

“I have a deep trust that God has big plans for us…”

We make plans for many things. High School juniors and seniors spent the summer doing college visits because the big question before them is, “where do you want to go to school?” And on the heels of this is, “what’s your backup plan if you don’t get in?” I just visited with a fam ily about a memorial service, and it revolved around their plans for what would be most meaningful in celebrating their loved one. People are making plans on how to live with high inflation and a potential recession.

What’s Your Plan?

Our faith turns our discussions into holy conversations in which we are discerning where God is on the move in our midst. It is a chance to look beyond what we can see and imagine what could be. Our planning is an opportunity to invite the hope God gives us to shape our future. As it says in sacred scripture, “faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1).

MAKE IT OFFICIAL.

There is nothing more joyous for a pastor than to see people gathered for Worship on a Sunday morn ing. Pastors spend their weeks working up to Sunday when the body of Christ gathers together to lift up our collective voices and praise God, catch up on each oth er’s lives and get re-fueled to meet the challenges of the week ahead. When the pandemic shifted everything online, it was a new reality for me as a pastor. We led Worship for months from our kitchen tables speak ing to a computer screen. I am so grateful we had the technology in place to quickly pivot and do what needed to be done to keep our Marble Community together in the ways we did. I was encouraged by how our staff figured out cre ative ways to do programming that was interesting, faith-enriching, engaging and educational in online spaces. I was impressed by how quickly some of our folks who might never have imagined they would be able to “do the computer” figured it out and were able to engage with our programs. I have been delighted to welcome new members from across the country to be part of Marble. But I still believe in the power of worshiping together in person as much as we possibly can. The many months of changed habits and routines has affected us all in ways both seen and unseen. Many people have told me they just don’t do the things they used to do, don’t go to the concerts, mov ies or theater like they used to, don’t see friends as much as they did before the pandemic, and aren’t coming to Worship in person as regularly as they did before.Ipray that as we move into a new church year each of us can commit anew to realizing the importance of your in-per son presence at Marble. The livestream community sees the Sanctuary and hears the powerful con gregational singing that is uniquely Marble. They feel the energy of those gathered together. We want Marble to be a vibrant, thriving place, and in-person presence helps make that possible.

Please keep Rev. Elise in your prayers during her mini-sabbatical in September and October, an important time of renewal and refreshment for her. We look forward to her return!

JOIN THE MARBLE FAMILY – NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE

By Rev. J. Elise Brown, Ph.D. The way God designed our bodies is a model for understanding our lives together as a church: every part dependent on every other part, the parts we mention and the parts we don’t, the parts we see and the parts we don’t. If one part hurts, every other part is involved in the hurt, and in the healing. If one part flourishes, every other part enters into the exuberance.

I Corinthians 12:26 (The Message)

CONNECTING WITH KIM & SIOBHAN

The beginning of the new church year is quickly approaching, and we are so excited to welcome everyone back. It goes without saying the last two and a half years have challenged us in so many ways. We feel changed. We feel nervous about reentering life while learning to navigate all that’s hap pening in the world around us and yet we know we need to. It’s time.

Kim Sebastian-Ryan

As I write this, I am reminded of the lyr ics to the theme song from the television show Cheers – “Making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got. Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot. Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name. And they’re always glad you came. You want to be where you can see our troubles are all the same. You want to be where everybody knows your name.” Siobhan and I hope you will remember – Marble is that place. Whether you join us online or in person, we’re always glad you came. Marble is a place to recon nect with old friends and make some new ones. A place to be reminded we are all in this together and for those precious hours on a Sunday we can join in worship and song and be together. We can be reminded that God is with us and, although the road might get bumpy at times, we have the Spirit and each other to walk with us. So, as we throw the doors wide open on September 11, we hope you’ll join us in person if you’re in the NYC metro area and online for those who can’t be here. We’ll kick off the season after Worship in the Labyrinth Room with a special Welcome Back Coffee Hour with Back-to-School Drive and In-House Volunteer Opportunities. Later in the month we’ll have our “Passport to the Fall” Coffee Hour to introduce you to all our program groups and upcoming activities. There is a lot to do, and we can’t wait to get started! We’re here, and we are ready! We hope you are, too, and we hope to see you at Marble or in the chat online!

A CONVERSATION WITH FAYE WATTLETON

Denise Kaalund, another longtime tutor and retired educator, said she appreciated the unique needs and personalities of her tutees — along with many welcome surpris es. “One of the aspects that I really loved was the connection with the younger genera tion,” she said.

As Marble Collegiate Church enters its eighth year of tutoring Math and English at P.S.30 Elementary School in East Harlem, New York, nearly 70 students have experienced the success of learning through this program.Leonna Austin, Principal of P.S.30, got a pleas ant surprise one day last year when she entered the school’s tutoring room where a fifth grader was laugh ing at her computer screen. “Zooming” in on that computer was Sonja Johnson, tutoring remotely from North Carolina, with signs of encouragement (“No worries,” “Hakuna Matata,” “Champions”) taped all over the upper part of her body in her efforts to boost her tutee’s confidence for an upcoming state test.

between tutors and their students and families. The student feels their tutor’s interest and support, and this provides individual encouragement they might not receive in the class room. I shed tears as I watched my student graduate this year — both tears of joy at his accomplishments and sorrow that our time together had ended.”

just spending one-on-one time with a child is exactly what they need,” said Stan Williams, a communications professional who has tutored in the program since its inception. “When a lesson was frustrating, we stopped and talked about Pokémon, video games or our favorite candy.”

“These students need all the help they can get beyond normal classroom teaching, and I am glad that Marble tutors are assisting in that endeavor,” said Agatha Pratt, a longtime Marble tutor. June Jarvis said she and her tutee conquered tech nology challenges together. “Even through a Zoom room and my student wearing a mask, there was a closeness that I would have never expected.”

Marble tutors agree that the program is a gift to everyone involved. Please consider participating in this unique and rewarding experience of giving back. As the Marble Tutoring Program moves into the 2022-2023 scholastic year, in-person sessions will return. However, opportunities for long-distance online learning will remain an option for tutors who can only participate online. Tutors will be asked to commit to serving one, two-hour session per week.

In addition, if you have skills and/or desire to support math skills, we particularly need you. Join us! Interested potential tutors should reach out to Rev. Susanah Wade (SWade@ MarbleChurch.org).

Faye Wattleton, president of the Center for the Advancement of Women and former president of Planned Parenthood, talks about the impact of the Supreme Court’s Roe vs Wade decision and its ramifications and impact on all people. And, most importantly, where the country goes from here. Check MarbleChurch.org for program details and updates.

According to Nadire Ibroci, Academic Program Director at P.S.30, teachers at P.S.30 have com mended Marble tutors for their preparedness, their dedication, their focus and their knowledge of their tutees’“Sometimes, needs.

“The student lit up when they saw the level of commitment from the tutor,” said Ms. Austin of this student, who ended up graduating fifth grade at the top of her class. “The social ties run so deep. It goes beyond the tutoring. Giving of your time is the best gift to give students and each student who has been impacted has been changed and for the better.”

Every Summer (thanks to the generosity of our Marble Collegiate Church Scholarship Fund and donors), scholarships are given to CYF alumni headed to further (or continue) their education. This year, nine scholarships were awarded. Here’s what some of the recipients had to say about their favorite memories, what Marble has taught them, and what this support means to them: Favorite Memories: The Youth Service Trip to New Orleans was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. I learned so much about myself, and others, while being able to grow in my faith – Walker McSween (Berklee College of Music)

During our Confirmation lock-in, I had a dance com petition, so I had to leave extra early. You’d expect me to have been exhausted. But I wasn’t. Being around my Marble friends wasn’t tiring. We talked about thought-provoking subjects, and I danced the best I danced all season – because I was calm and at peace – Tyla-Rae Washington-Boone (Manhattan College)

– Sofia Licata (Goldsmiths, University of London) Marble taught me how to forgive others. Because holding grudges never solves anything. I continue to bring and spread that forgiving nature to others at college.

SUNDAYS WITH CYF Sunday School classes, Youth Group, CYF choirs, and infant/toddler childcare will return in person on Sunday, September 11. Having the opportunity to finish my degree with the support of Marble is a blessing I’m absolutely honored to receive. I am so excited to graduate and start this next chapter of my life!

What has Marble taught you? The values that Marble has instilled in me from a young age has led me well into adulthood. I use the qualities from my faith in my everyday interactions with my neighbors, friends, family, peers, and community. – Samantha Quan (Rutgers University)

Brian has previously held this position before going off for several years to do other things including key educational work with young children. Before that, he had been part of the Marble Staff for fourteen years and involved with CYF, ARTS, and excited(20’s&30’s).ConnectionWeareforwhatBrian will bring and build here with this ministry that’s so important.

– Laura Cummings (NYU: School of Professional Studies)

Marble taught me that family is forever. I moved to London about a year ago, and when I came back for my sister’s confirmation, it felt like I had never left. There is something so special in having a home you can always return to, even when life takes you across the world

– James (Jordan) Banks (Penn State University) What does receiving a Marble Scholarship mean to you?

Receiving a Marble Scholarship is a great honor. I grew up in this church, and the people at Marble have been holding my hand and supporting me in all my endeavors. I’m honored and truly privileged to have Marble’s continuous support – Ella Niewood (University of Connecticut)

beside the neighbor’s house, then faintly next to it a second, little by little both expanded to full rainbows with the bottom one closer and brighter than I’ve seen in almost 50 years. My emotions were still a bit numb, but I couldn’t take my eyes off the sky. Even when it started to rain, I had trouble pulling myself away. I told Mom it might have made up for the dirty plane window.

The message I got from those rainbows was the reminder that God keeps finding a way to reach me. Yes, I want to do my part by cleaning the window, but whether I get that done or not, God isn’t going anywhere. And there may be times God will completely remove the window and shine brightly in the promise of a double rainbow.

I wondered what’s the lesson in this and had an aha moment – lately, I’ve been looking at God through dirty windows! My view of God, my moments and my bond with God, have had something in the way. The old ways of daily connection haven’t been working as well. I realize emotions come and go, and my head and my lifetime of experience know God is with me and cheering me on, yet I want to FEEL – feel God’s presence, feel awe, feel gratitude, feel alive… every day. How could I clean my soul’s window?

Because of my connection to skies, I was looking forward to my recent flight to Iowa, even though I was concerned about the travel chaos in the head lines. Once I was in the air, I’d be sitting in my seat, blissfully looking out the window at my beloved skies. More than ever, I needed to see that limitless sky. I was hoping it would make my spirits soar again. My heart sank when I sat down in my seat – my window was so dirty I couldn’t see anything clearly. This was the first time that had happened to me. I glanced around and windows near me were fine, not perfectly “Windexed”, yet with a clear view. I was especially disappointed as I saw a hint of sunset through the filthy win dow. I turned to look through the window across the aisle.

Reflections from the Editor

My love of skies started in childhood with Iowa’s “big sky” country (no mountains to interrupt the view). And now, even in the middle of New York City, my eyes glance at the sky every chance I get, whether it’s leaning slightly to my right as I sit on my sofa so I can see the tiny triangle of blue out my window or between-building views from my stoop or as I walk around the neighborhood. On vacation in Maine, it gets this non-morning person to wake early to watch the sunrise over the ocean. In 2014, I even created a book of my sky photos (only a handful of thousands I’ve taken) and included some of these reflections. If I had to choose an image of God, it would be the sky. The sky is limitless, always there, awe inspiring, and can immediately connect me to my spirit and my possibilities. Whether it’s a hint of sunset through midtown buildings, a burst of sun popping out from behind a tree, stormy cumulus clouds, feather-like wisps against a light blue background, the reflection of white and blue in a window or calm water… the sky keeps calling me to look upward.

Although I couldn’t get lost in the view like at my own window, I could at least get a peek. I thanked the men sitting there for sharing their window with me.

Nine days later the sky had another lesson for me. My mom and I were sitting on her deck, lingering after dinner, and I was watching the morphing clouds – fluffy, narrow, bright white, gray,

WOMEN OF IMPACT IN THE EARLY CHURCH Sunday, October 16 & 23 Rev. Liz Testa will explore how women in the New Testament helped establish and strengthen the early church and invites us to consider how their stories inspire our own journeys with Jesus in the 21st centu ry. Liz is Coordinator for Women’s Transformation and Leadership, Reformed Church in America, and former Associate Minister at Marble.

The works of these two prophets stand at the apex of the Hebrew Scriptures: power ful poetry and deep spiritual thought. But they come from opposite personalities. Jeremiah is mostly severe rebuke and rage, from a tortured soul. Isaiah is mostly hopeful, rejoicing in the prospect of renewal and peace. September 11: a date of destruction, we read passages from Jeremiah; September 18: we turn to Isaiah. Sacred Scriptures for both Christians and Jews. Led by Rabbi Jeremy Kalmanofsky, Ansche Chesed, a Conservative synagogue in Manhattan.

The grant comes at a difficult time for South Africa where the unemployment rate for those age 15-24 is 64 percent.

Over 1 million New York City residents are food insecure. “Your support, and that of the entire Marble Collegiate congregation, means so much to our clients as they move from life on the streets to the stabil ity and security of a home of their own,” wrote Ann Marie Walker of Urban Pathways.

Keabetsoe Sekoboto, director of Setshabelo Family and Child Services which Marble has long supported, wrote: “Blessed is the hand that gives because it will receive abundantly. We are trusting the Lord to continue giving us the wisdom to be good stewards of these resources.” She noted: “Each year SFCS has gained a stronger presence in Botshabelo and in South Africa and it is because of stake holder partnerships that we are able to strengthen parents and preserve fami lies in the best interest of children.”

SOUL BREAK CONCERT SERIES

They in Glory Shine

Suggested donation. (75 minutes, followed by a Festive Reception.)
