Junior School Sports News LITTLE ACCELERATORS PROGRAM - LONG TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT This week we commenced using the services of the Little Accelerators program with all classes in Year 5 & 6. The program is designed to implement a Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) approach to physical fitness. The research behind LTAD is profound and Marist College has always been a leader in innovation when it comes to our Sport and PE departments. Therefore, instead of developing sport specific skills we will focus on developing movement (e.g. hopping, running) prior to developing skills (e.g. throwing, kicking). The research has shown that young primary school children need to first improve their movement patterns, then their basic sports skills and finally their game play. To provide this foundation the College has employed the services of Acceleration Australia. Each morning, two qualified coaches from Acceleration will work with a large group of boys for 15-20 minutes, where the boys will be taught how to move better through using two of the following training types: Stability, Flexibility, Strength, Running Form, and Agility. Each day will conclude with a game that focuses on one of the two focus areas. Our goal for this program is to improve the way your child moves which can then be carried across to skill acquisition and improved game play for any sport. If you would like your son to progress faster in his development then please consider enrolling him into the Marist College Ashgrove Acceleration Program during Term 4. Enrolment forms can be accessed and completed at the following link: http://www.accelerationaustralia.com.au/enrolForm.cfm?form_id=384 INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS It is always good for the College to recognise boys’ individual achievements.
