From the Headmaster Dear members of the Marist College Community, I’d like to share with your the twelve prayers for Christmas that Br Raymond shared with the Brothers community last Christmas: Christmas is a glorious time of year! God brings us face to face once again with His design for and redemption of mankind. His intentions toward us are for life live abundantly. His plans for the kingdom are victorious! But for many people, the holidays can be filled with unrealistic expectations. Old hurts are sometimes revisited and new ones inflicted. Hope can go deferred and result in heartsickness (Proverbs 13:12). In the midst of the tinsel and lights and shopping, let’s remember what the season is really about! Let’s pray for a spirit of all things Christmas for ourselves and our loved ones. 1. LOVE - Lord, help us follow the way of love - let the love of Christ compel us (1 Corinthians 14:1; 2 Corinthians 5:14). 2. JOY - Restore the joy of Your salvation to us; let us experience the joy of Your presence (Psalm 51:12; 16:11). 3. PEACE - Let Your peace rule and guard our hearts; give us more of You - You are our peace (Colossians 3:15; Philippians 4:7; Ephesians 2:14). 4. HOPE - Enlighten the eyes of our heart so that we may know the hope You called us to (Ephesians 1:18). 5. FAVOUR - Let Your favour rest on us (Luke 2:52). 6. LIFE - Shine Your light of life on us; help us to walk in it (Job 33:30; Psalm 56:13). 7. SALVATION - Help us to fear You so we can unlock the treasure of Your salvation (Isaiah 33:6). 8. SELFLESSNESS - Keep us from self-seeking attitudes that reject truth (Romans 2:8). 9. GENEROSITY - Make us rich in ways that result in generosity on our part so You will be praised (2 Corinthians 9:11). 10. RECEIVING - Help us receive Your kingdom, Your Spirit, and Your grace (Daniel 7:18; John 20:22; Romans 5:17). 11. SEEKING - Encourage us to seek Your face with all our hearts (Deuteronomy 4:29; Psalm 27:8). 12. PRAISE - We ascribe glory to Your name, Lord; we come before You in worship for You are holy (1 Chronicles 16:28-29). from the publishers of Pray! magazine. On behalf of the College Family I would like to thank Mrs Mulvihill for all her energy and commitment to Learning Enrichment and wish her continued success as she returns full time to the classroom. Year 12 Graduation Sincere thanks to all involved in enabling our Year 12 boys to graduate so magnificently. So many staff contributed so much to the Graduation Mass, the farewell on McMahon Oval and the Graduation Dinner. It certainly let the class of 2010 know how significant they are to us all. I must single out Mr Richard Ward for the huge commitment he makes to ensure the boys “feel like kings”.

Headmaster’s Notes Continued... It is with a high degree of sadness that I wish to advise you that our College Chaplain, Fr Jim Hargrave has tended his resignation to me due to health reasons. Fr Jim has been the Chaplain here at Marist College Ashgrove since 1988 and has provided wonderful service to the College over those 23 years. Fr Jim goes about his ministry with simplicity, modesty and humility. Traits that St Marcellin would have honoured from a fellow Marist Father. Please join me in thanking Jim most sincerely for his magnificent dedication to all of us and assure him of our prayers.

French News Year 9 French Students Attend Immersion Day On Friday the 22nd of October, a class of year nine French students attended a French immersion day at the La Valla Centre. French students from all around Brisbane attended the day and participated in a number of interesting activities. Some interesting yet educational activities including ‘who wants to be a millionaire’ – in French, of course- charades in French and short conversations in French entitled ‘speed dating’. For morning tea, all the attending students were treated to lovely ‘pain aux chocolats’. It was a wonderful opportunity for French students to socialise and practice their French. The day was much appreciated by all the Year 9 French students. Matthew Lake Prize giving at the Alliance Française Sam Dale, Year 9, recited his poem ‘la Planète’ after receiving First Prize at the Alliance Française on Friday 29 October. Bravo! French Trip 2010-2011 French students are preparing for their exchange trip to Tours on December 4- January 10. They will spend 5 days in Paris, 3 days in Amiens including a two day trip to the Somme battlefields , following the exploits of Australian soldiers in the First World War, before staying with their host families from the Lycée Marmoutier in Tours, in the beautiful Loire Valley for three weeks. After the New Year they will travel to the Hermitage de Notre Dame near Lyon to experience the Marist heritage of Marcellin Champagnat, then on to Chamonix to ski and take, intrepidly, the cable car to the Midi d‘Aiguille. In February Marist College and Stuartholme schools will reciprocate the French hospitality and host the French students, who by then will be well acquainted.

Music News 2010 will go down in Marist College Ashgrove’s music history as another highly successful performance year. Numerous highlights included a diverse range of high profile performances and several competition successes. As usual the Music year commenced with the traditional camp held at Alexandra Headlands in the first weekend back at school. After only a few weeks into the year performances were already underway including Inaugural Mass, Champagnat Trust Lunch and Autumn Band, String and Choral concerts. The undoubted highlight of Term 2 was the “Blue & Gold” concert. This biennial concert featured parents, staff members and Marist community members in a night of musical excellence. Soloists on the night included old boy Bryce Gilhome and current Year 12 students Brodie McAllister and Nathan Hearn. The standard of performance in all items was outstanding, and for the first time in the history of concerts in the Draney Theatre the Symphony Orchestra and soloist Nathan Hearn received a standing ovation for their performance of “Rhapsody in Blue”. Other Term 2 performances included Big Band 1 travelling to Goondiwindi to play at their annual show, Experimental Theatre Spotlight Concerts, the Winter and Guitar concerts, the choirs competing in the Queensland Youth Awards , Battle of the Bands, Champagnat Day Mass, Year 5 Band and Strings Concert, and the Junior Choral Concert. Also Year 12 student Brodie McAllister was again awarded “runner up” in the national 2010 Future Leaders Awards Jazz Award held at the Melbourne Jazz Festival. In Term 3 the Marist Jazz Night featured all of the College’s Jazz Bands and special guests “The Enthusiastic Musicians Orchestra”. Other performances included the Cathedral Concert, Junior String Day, Australian Percussion Eisteddfod, Winds & Percussion Concert and the Blue and Gold Ball. It was also great to see record numbers of Marist musicians selected for the Queensland Secondary Honour Choir, the State Honours Ensemble Program and G.R.I.P.P.S. Term 4 saw the boys excel in multiple competitions across Brisbane. Senior Strings, Junior Strings and Big Band 1 were all awarded Gold in their section of Music Fest held at various venues around Brisbane. The tradition of junior school boys concluding the year with a musical production continued with the ambitious undertaking of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. The countless hours of preparation that Mrs. Kellee Green gave to this project and the dedication by the boys were obvious to all in the three sold out performances. The performing year concluded for most groups with the annual Grandparents Day Concert and Soiree that were attended by record audiences. Special thanks must go to Mr Craig Kennedy for his fantastic efforts in the co-ordination of the instrumental Music program. Through his hard work in tandem with our Administration Assistant, Mrs. Jennifer Hutchinson the administration and communication with staff and parents has continued to improve. The full time staff Mrs Laura Kavanagh, Mrs Kellee Green, Mrs Catherine Wasserman and Miss Stefanie Smith have selflessly given much of their time and talent to the development of the Music Department here at Marist and their help is most appreciated. As always the part time staff have continued to bring their great talents to the department and their input has been invaluable. I must also thank Mr Peter McLoughlin for his personal support over the year and the College staff and administration for all their encouragement throughout the year. Finally, heartfelt thanks to all the students and especially the Year 12 class of 2010 who were involved in the Music Department this year. Without their dedication, talent and enthusiasm that they have displayed in rehearsals, concerts and competitions throughout the year, the successes that we have enjoyed would not have been possible. It has truly been a pleasure again to work with such outstanding young men and boys. Mr Andrew Butt Head of Music

Mission and Ministry News PRAYER Advent is a time when we rejoice in the coming of Christ into our lives, that he came at Christmas, and that he comes again to be our Lord and King. Advent celebrates that our God comes to us again and again. This weekend we celebrate the First Sunday of Advent this is the time when we remember our ancestors in the faith and give thanks to God for all of his faithful people. Advent Prayer God who dwells with us, We pray for one gift this Christmas; We pray for a change of heart. Far any relationship with You Is more an affair of the heart than of the head. We pray for hearts open enough so that we can, Like Mary, take You at your word And not demand that all of our questions be answered at that outset. We pray too that our hearts be as fruitful as Mary’s And eventually as passionate, on fire, Full of love for Jesus and His Good News. In this way future Christmases Might just be celebrated in a world more in keeping With what You had in mind in the first place. Amen. Mission and Ministry News Continued... REMEMERANCE DAY ASSEMBLY 11/11 On the 11th November we celebrated our last final assembly as a College community. The theme of this assembly was one of sacrifice. The soldiers that we remembered and honoured on this day made the ultimate sacrifice; they gave their lives for their country. To make a sacrifice is the voluntary giving of something valued, for the sake of something else more important. During this assembly the Mission and Ministry team were able to present some MATES AWARDS to some very worthy students. The MATES program at Marist College provides our students with the chance to be involved in many justice programs and generous service opportunities within the College and outside in the wider community. The students give of themselves and make sacrifices of their own in order to reach out in solidarity with those people most in need. In doing so, they display compassion and empathy by their actions and commitment to these programs. Many of the activities in which these students are involved in, take place in their own time, after school, and during holiday breaks. These include such activities as organizing and fundraising for various outreach organizations, serving on the homeless BBQ and outreach rosters, attending to domestic needs of locals in and around Ashgrove, and volunteering to help communities in very isolated and far away countries, which as a College community, we visit on immersion experiences. Other outside organizations in which our students work alongside with also include Caritas, Rosies, and The St Vincent De Paul Conference. The following awards were presented to the following students Bronze Awards-20 Hours of Service, Silver Awards40 Hours of Service, Gold Awards- 60 Hours of Service, Gold Plus Awards- These awards were presented to students who have shown a consistent commitment to MATES Service within the College and the wider community. Mission and Ministry News Continued... CHRISTIAN SERVICE HIGHLIGHTS –Marist College MATES Program MATES recognises that relationship and solidarity are at the heart of all Christian service. In 2010 our Year 12 students have been at the forefront of the MATES program, being of service to the College community and to the “least favoured” in our local community. MATES has enabled so many of our Year 12 students to respond to the Founder of Marist Education, Marcellin Champagnat’s encouragement of young people: • to be “good Christians and good citizens” • to be wholeheartedly involved in the communities to which they belong • to want to do things “with people”, not “for people” nor “to people” MATES activities in 2010 included: • Christian service, justice and solidarity activities, e.g. St Vincent De Paul Conference and Caritas group • BBQs with the homeless, visits with the elderly and disabled, overseas and local immersion experiences, LAMP reading assistance program, homeless sleep-out retreat • SONY Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp for 32 children with disabilities • Awareness and support of our Marist brothers and sisters in schools and communities in the Asia/Pacific region Total number of hours of Christian service performed by the 2010 Year 12 group since 2006 was 7,359 Total number of hours of Christian service performed by the 2010 Year 12 group during 2010 was 3,739. MATES Program Awards to Year 12 students 2010: • Platinum Awards (made at the discretion of the Headmaster for extraordinary service) to Laurent Dubois, Ryan Donnelly, Ethan Marrinan, Scott McCarthy, Filipe Gama Silva • Gold Plus Awards (100+ hours of service) to 25 students • Gold Awards (60+ hours of service) to 11 students • Silver Awards (40+ hours of service) to 18 students • Bronze Awards (20+ hours of service) to 12 students MATES Platinum Awards Winners 2010 Citations The MATES Platinum Award is presented from time to time for contributions to the MATES program and service and outreach opportunities. It is awarded for extraordinary commitment to the Christian and Marist values for which our College stands, that is, putting into practice what our faith requires of us. For as St James reminds us, “so faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead”. By any measure this year has been an outstanding one in terms of service, social justice and solidarity. At our final assembly for the year held last week we presented 110 MATES awards to students in Years 11 and 12 alone for service of between 20 and 150 plus hours. The following five students were recognised for their outstanding contribution and commitment to the college for ministry and service. Laurent Dubois Laurent Dubois has been an outstanding participant in the MATES program over a number of years and is a very worthy recipient of a Platinum Award. Laurent’s faith, awareness of others and personal giftedness have always been shared generously with so many in our College community. The 201 hours of service Laurent has committed to have been expressed through the St Vincent De Paul conference, the Marist Solidarity Immersion to Santa Teresa Aboriginal Community, the Sony Camp for Children with disabilities and numerous fund raising and awareness raising activities over the last two years. We hope and pray that Laurent’s faith and service will continue to inspire others and give him firm purpose and rich meaning for life. Ethan Marrinan Ethan Marrinan has been an outstanding College leader this year. His generosity and willingness have not been bound by school hours. He has always made his time available for many activities outside the academic program. Ethan has gone out of his way as a leader to encourage and listen to younger students. Ethan’s gratitude and optimism are always at the forefront whether it be with students, families or staff. The 163 hours of service Ethan has committed to are a reflection of his giftedness with people especially the least favoured, whether at the homeless bbq at South Brisbane or on the Rosies van. Ethan’s witness to his faith has left its mark on so many in the College community this year and for this we are very grateful.

Mission and Ministry News Continued... Scott McCarthy Scott McCarthy exemplifies the Marist quality of doing good quietly. Scott’s 179 hours of service in the MATES program has been achieved through his total commitment to St Vincent De Paul where he has hardly missed a weekly meeting over the past two years. Scott’s commitment to service and outreach knows no bounds. The numerous awards Scott will receive this evening reflect the esteem and admiration our College community has for this fine young man. Ryan Donnelly In the MATES program Ryan Donnelly has found opportunities for expressing an awareness of social justice and how we can respond as people of faith to the least favoured in our society. In his 160 hours of service Ryan has been prominent as an initiator and animator, an organiser and participant. Whether in the St Vincent De Paul organisation, the Sony camp, the immersion to Salla Lavalla Cambodia, the Walk for Innocents, homeless bbq, Rosies, or yard cleaning for people in the local Ashgrove area, Ryan has been in it all with sleeves rolled up and a smile on his face. Ryan Donnelly is a Marist boy par excellence. This award is our thanks to Ryan for all he has given to our College in his time here. Filipe Gama Silva Filipe’s 233 hours of service in the MATES program say much about not only Filipe’s generosity but also his deep belief in working for a better world. Filipe has been involved in a wide range of service activities – from sharing his expertise as part of the Tech crew in College productions, to the immersion to Cambodia, and as a key participant in the homeless bbqs at South Brisbane. Filipe’s organisational skills and commitment to issues of justice saw him engaging a range of students from a number of Colleges including our own, at the CARITAS BE MORE night and its associated campaign. Filipe will leave for Cambodia again at the end of November for three months and he will live as a member of the Salla Lavalla community. This generous commitment says much about Filipe’s character and his desire to give something back to those who have enriched his life. He goes with our prayers and good wishes. 2010 Year 12 Prize Giving
