From the Headmaster Dear members of the Marist College Community, I’ve written before about the many challenges of life in the twenty first century. Sometimes it can all be a little overwhelming. During the holidays I walked into a bookstore and one of the top ten best sellers was Peter Fitzsimons latest book “Life in Simpler Times.” Something to which I instantly related. Technology amazes me. It adds so much to our lives and is a truly wonderful asset. But we can’t let it rule our lives. It concerns me to talk to some parents who confide that their son spends nearly all of his free time on “facebook” or “msn” or one of the many web 2 technologies that exist. My response is all things in moderation. As parents we need to know what our children are doing. Easy to say, more difficult to do. The challenge for us as parents is to try and keep up with our children and their interest. This can be confronting in itself. Sometimes our children talk about the challenges that they face. We all face challenges. Some are faced with bigger challenges than we can imagine. They inspire us. During the holidays I read a story written by Shelley Smith and Nancy Devaney for ABC News (USA). It was a story about a twelve year old boy named Jake Olson. An amazing story of “fighting on” against unbelievable odds.

USC Coach Pete Carroll and members of the football team opened their world for their No.1 fan, Jake…

When Jake was a year old, he was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a condition in which cancerous tumors develop in the retina, in both eyes. Doctors removed his left eye, but with chemotherapy and radiation, they were able to save his right. That right eye has shown him his world -- the faces of his parents, his twin sister, Emma, the surf near his home in Huntington Beach, Calif., and the fairways and greens of nearby golf courses, where he and his father play as often as they can. The cancer has returned eight times, and each time, Jake beat it. However, this past September, he learned it had come back again, and this time treatment didn’t work. Doctors told him they would have to take his right eye, too. It was news that Jake processed quickly. “I said, ‘How you doing, buddy?’” said his mother, Cindy Olson. “He goes, ‘Yeah, mom this is just going to be a new stage of my life.” “I’m just sad I won’t be able to see them ever again,” Jake said. “It’s so hard, and yet cancer wins. But I’m going to experience something no one else can experience.”

From the Headmaster Continued... With more than a month before his surgery, Jake told his parents that what he wanted to see most one last time was another USC Trojans game. His wish reached Trojan head coach, Pete Carroll. “The first thing was let’s make sure that he gets inside and gets to see everything that he wants to see,” Carroll said. “God bless him, he deserves every bit of it.” The Trojans invited Jake to practice Oct. 14, where he was introduced to his favorite player, centre Kris O’Dowd. It wasn’t long before a bond was born between the fellow centres. “When I met this kid, I really felt a connection with him because it’s just really rare for somebody to reach out to an offensive lineman, someone in our position,” O’Dowd said. “He gave us these words of wisdom. It’s amazing how a seventh-grader can make 100 guys dead quiet and just hear every word that comes out of his mouth, because they have mutual respect and love for this kid Jake.” While Jake and his family have been USC fans for years, they never imagined that the team they love so much would come to their aid and take them in as their own during the toughest period the Olsons have ever faced. In just a short time, the Trojans gave Jake a lifetime of memories and a whole new set of images to take with him going into surgery. “I’ll know what they look like. …. Blake’s [Ayles] long blond hair; Kris [O’Dowd], real big, beard, moustache; my parents; my friends,” Jake said. “So when they’re talking to me, I’ll just picture them in my head -- oh that’s my mom, that’s my dad. I just want to take as much in as I can.” Upon waking from surgery, Jake saw a white light and was comforted when he heard his parents’ voices. “When I got home, I really didn’t feel sorry,” he said. “Now it’s already happened and I can move on.” Just six days after surgery, Jake was able to fulfill the promise he made to his new teammates and, walking with the aid of a blind stick, re-joined the Trojans at practice. Taken from: http://abcnews.go.com/US/usc-trojans-fan-fights-football-friends/story?id=9264280 Jake Olson’s story certainly puts some perspective on our seemingly “overwhelming challenges”. I’m sure our boys who were involved in the Sony Camp from September 17-20 can relate to my point here. They had a great “eye opener” into the realities of life for children with different abilities and their families. St Marcellin founded the Marist Brothers out of a need to reach out to those less fortunate than ourselves. His driving force was the philosophy of making Jesus known and loved. It’s the ‘never give up’ attitude on which we need to focus, by being the best person we can be each and every day. In this way we all can be heroes. Consider the words of Wilfred Peterson: “Few of us will do the spectacular deeds of heroism that spread themselves across the pages of our newspapers in big black headlines. But we can all be heroic in the little things of everyday life. We can do the helpful things, say the kind words. Meet the difficulties with courage and high hearts, stand up to for the right when the cost is high, keep our word even though it means sacrifice, be a giver instead of a destroyer. Often this quiet, humble heroism is the greatest heroism of all.” Yours in Jesus, Mary and St Marcellin, Peter McLoughlin Headmaster

Headmaster’s Notes Continued... Illegal Substances Earlier this year all families Year 7,8 and 9 received a copy of the Marist College Ashgrove Alcohol and Drug Resource Book. I commend this to you and the work done by Mr Ward and the P & F in putting this together. I ask all parents to familiarise themselves with the Book and draw your attention specifically to the Marist College Ashgrove Drug Policy which appears on Page 32 and 33 of the book and is also printed below.

MARIST COLLEGE ASHGROVE

Policy and Procedure Concerning Illegal and Illicit Substances by Students at Marist College Ashgrove (current as at 28 July 2005)

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2010

Headmaster’s Notes Continued... 1. Introduction In working to provide a safe and nurturing environment for our students, Marist College Schools face many challenges. None of the schools is isolated from the effects of substance abuse. In reality, substance abuse can and does occur both directly and indirectly within our schools and school environment. The following document will be followed by all schools and will provide guidance, support and resources to assist in both educational planning and appropriate responses to incidents involving substance abuse. Whilst we strive with educational programs, pastoral care and the raising of awareness to promote an environment free from illegal substances, the following document also recognises the complexity of many situations facing Heads of School, staff, students and family.

2. Purpose This document has been prepared in order to:   

express the Policy and Procedures for Marist College Ashgrove regarding illegal substances in the school context. Reflect the National School Drug Education Strategy and National Framework for Protocols for Managing Illicit and Other Unsanctioned Drugs in Schools (June 2000). provide information in respect of illicit drugs – the physical, psychological, and social problems connected with the misuse of drugs and dependence and prohibited substances and the treatment of persons experiencing such problems.

3. Rationale Marist College Ashgrove is guided not only by the common and statute law, but also by those values which characterise the Reign of God as exemplified in the life and charism of our founder, St Marcellin Champagnat. All students in our schools have the right to attend a school where their safety and welfare is positively promoted. Because our schools value the worth of each child, responses to individual situations need to be made in the light of gospel values of justice, compassion and forgiveness.

4. Principles   

All citizens have the responsibility to uphold the law The safety and welfare of each student is paramount. Schools have educational and pastoral responsibilities towards all students and their families in addressing these areas.

Headmaster’s Notes Continued...  

Undertaking to take part in a specific program as provided by an external professional Undertaking, by contractual agreement, not to reoffend. (Undertakings are written documents kept on record) NB. Parents should be involved and fully aware of the options chosen as appropriate response to the student’s offending behaviour NB. Based on the agreement contained in the School’s Enrolment Policy, students are expected to accept and participate in disciplinary and pastoral measures arising from the breach.

Appendix A Principles in Relation to Drug Education in Schools (National Drug Strategy)     

Early intervention is the most cost-effective way of reducing illegal drug use. Drug education is best taught in the context of the school health/physical education as appropriate. i.e. Religious Education programs Additional drug education in schools should be conducted by people who are credible in the eyes of students – Health Professionals, Pharamacists, Police, Lawyers and especially exoffenders. Drug education programs need sequence, progression and continuity over time throughout schooling. In adolescence, students respond to information about the brain and specific facts about drugs. Drug education messages across the school environment need to be consistent and coherent.

Effective approaches to drug education:         

address the values, attitudes and behaviours of the community and the individual. is based on research, effective curriculum practice and identified student needs. objectives are linked with the overall goal of harm minimisation. strategies are related directly to the achievement of program objectives and measured outcomes. have emphasis on drug use likely to occur in the group and drug use which causes the most harm to the individual and society. reflects an understanding of the characteristics of the individual, the social context, the drug and interrelationship of these factors. responds to developmental, gender, cultural, language, socio-economic and lifestyle difference relevant to the level of student use. involves students, parents and the wider community in the school drug education programme at both planning and implementation stages. includes evaluation of drug education objectives, processes and outcomes.

Headmaster’s Notes Continued... Canonisation of Mary MacKillop Mary MacKillop – Advocate for the poor Introduction: Mary’s love for Christ was so strong that she sought him out in the poor, sick and suffering. There are many examples in Mary’s life where she put aside her own needs in order to serve the sick, lonely and disadvantaged. The children taught by the Sister often had no shoes to wear. On the night before their First Communion, Mary would have a re-enactment of the Washing of the Feet. This meant all the children would have clean feet for this special occasion in their life. Gospel Reading – Mark 14:7 for you always have the poor with you, and you can show kindness to them whenever you wish; but you will not always have me. From the Pen of Mary MacKillop Mary wrote to the Sisters in March 1900, If choice be given seek the most neglected places to which He calls us. Let us never forget that, in the spirit of our Rule, it is to those we should desire to go……. Let us be true to the beautiful spirit of our Institute…. Let St Joseph’s true children remember their mission and seek first the poorest, most neglected parts of God’s vineyard. Reflective Moment: What is my response to those most in need in my community? Let us pause to hold in prayer the vulnerable, disadvantaged and alienated in our world. Prayer: Bountiful and loving God, You filled the heart of Mary MacKillop with compassionate love for those who are in need and those at the margins of our society. Inspired by her example, may we be led by your Spirit to reach out to our brothers and sisters. Give us generous hearts to respond to the cries of those who are poor in our community and in our world. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen Blessed Mary of the Cross, standing with the vulnerable, pray for us. Call to Action: Today take time to reach out to someone in need. Opening & searching of bags and lockers The College is committed under its ethos and under law to the wellbeing of its students and to the maintenance of a safe environment. Parents and students need to be aware that: · From time to time, students will be asked to open their bags and lockers for inspection by delegated staff. · This will occur on occasions when there is a reasonable suspicion that such contain objects that may be harmful to the particular student or to other students (knives, drugs). · Such searches will be carried out discreetly and parents informed as soon as reasonably possible. · Where it is suspected that students have brought to school inappropriate material on personal mobile phones, memory sticks or personal computers, those objects will be temporally confiscated and parents will be contacted to assist the school to take the matter forward. Richard Ward Deputy Head of School (Pastoral)

GRANDPARENTS DAY HELPERS Grandparents Day will be held Friday 5 November and we are seeking help with the morning tea. For those who are new to the College we normally ‘entertain’ a large contingent of grandparents with a magnificent concert followed by morning tea. We need parental volunteers to assist in two groups. It would be greatly appreciated if you could spare some time to help. We would need some assistance from 8.30am to prepare the food, with the majority needed to serve morning tea after the concert which will conclude around 10.30 am. Morning tea will be finished by 11 am when the boys will meet up with their grandparents. If you are able to help please email: Bernie Reddaway: berniereddaway@ hotmail.com or Karen Ryan: karen_ryan@hotmail.com

Martin Busby, Myles Darwin, Ben Emmott, Ken Lopez Loo, Zack O’Brien, William Redmond, Tim Tracey, Katy Ward, Br. Mark and Luke McMahon. This week Kenneth Lopez Loo and William Redmond gave a report to the College Assembly on Wednesday on behalf of the Santa Teresa Immersion group where they shared the group’s experiences and reflections. It was also during this presentation that Miss Katy Ward presented to the College the gift of a book titled “Listen Deeply, Let these Stories In” written by Kathleen Wallace a member of the local community. “Good morning Mr. McLoughlin, Father Jim, teachers and fellow Ashgrovians. During the EKKA break last term, Will Redmond, Ben Emmott, Marty Busby, Zack O’Brien, Myles Darwin, Tim Tracey and I, Kenneth Lopez-Loo departed from Brisbane for Santa Teresa Aboriginal Community, west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory accompanied by Brother Mark, Miss Katy Ward and Mr. Luke McMahon. In the beginning, the seven of us were eager yet unsure of what we had signed up for. Most of us came from a lifestyle where the toughest thing to do each day was take out the trash. For those who had not seen the Big Red rock, it is nothing like what it is in the postcards. After thirty minutes of suspense and magic, we went walking around the rock, where the sense of mystery and awe is even stronger. We then headed off to

Mission and Ministry News Continued... Santa Teresa, to live with the Arrernte people for the week. It’s interesting to experience the spirituality of the Arrernte people. Even after so many years, their deep connection to their land is still present. Today they still pass traditions on down through stories. It was surprising how easily we fitted into the simple lifestyle of the Arrernte people. As Santa Theresa was a small town, we were pretty hard to miss. Everyone wanted to know us, regardless of age or gender. I guess you could call us the new shiny toys of the town. We were the minority culture living amongst the 600 local Arrernte community. Our enthusiastic minds and able-bodies were seen as an asset to the community and were instantly thrown into the deep end, at the Ginger Porta primary school. (Kenneth Lopez Loo) For the next few days we worked in the school, rotating between classes each day, this is where most of us got to experience listening to religion classes in the native language of the area "Aranda". Some of us had the opportunity to do wood work with the older boys where we made clap sticks, while others got the opportunity to listen to the younger kids reading to us. On most days we found ourselves at the oval having a kick and running around with the younger boys and girls. All seven boys in our group were taught new skills about AFL footy from very talented and capable 11 and 12 year olds. In the evenings we would all head down to the gym to play basketball. We were shown no mercy. They are such brilliant athletes!!! On the Thursday afternoon Kenny, Miss Ward and myself went with Sr. Liz to get the campsite to prepare for our overnight camp out. This was probably my most enjoyable experience of the immersion. Cooking kangaroo tail and damper, while watching Kenny do all the hard work, such as collecting wood or digging holes for the kangaroo tails to cook in. When the rest of the group come out to the camp site we all enjoyed the kangaroo tail for dinner, except for Mr. McMahon who somehow got away without eating any. The following day we started the journey back to Brisbane, with much more then what we came with, with our eyes opened and a huge love for the people of Santa Teresa. (William Redmond)

Mission and Ministry News Continued... For a city boy like me, this trip was an eye opener. I learned many things there. I learnt about the art, culture and lifestyle of the first Australians. The opportunity to share our insights each evening with the other nine members of this immersion was also significant. This immersion was extremely humbling for me. It challenged me on so many different levels. (Kenneth Lopez Loo) UPCOMING EVENTS Monday 18th October (Student Free Day): A Reunion for all those Year 12 Students who attended the Marist Leadership Forum to be held at La Valla, Rosalie. SONY FOUNDATION MARIST CHILDRENS HOLIDAY CAMP 2010 (Friday 17th to Monday 20th September) At this week’s College assembly we honoured the work and commitment of 63 Year 12 students from Marist College and Mt Alvernia who gave up the first four days of the September holidays. This year’s camp saw 32 children welcomed to the College for the four days. Our youngest child was 5 years of age, our oldest 17. There were 10 girls and 22 boys. These children were here to experience four days of companionship and new adventures. This is our 8th camp. The College would like to thank the following people: The organising committee of: Mr Ward, Mr O’Farrell, Ms Armitage and Mr Nelson, Sr Jane O’Shea and Sr Liz Dangerfield and all our College Health Centre staff who coordinated a team of more than 25 Registered Nurses. Staff members: Ms Ward, Ms Canning, Mr Baldwin, Ms Spillane, Mr Keown and the Hospitality boys, Mr Purcell, Mr Seaborn, Mr Maddox, Mr Lawson, Mr Metzeling, Mr Wright, Mr Butt and the Music staff and students, Fr Jim Hargrave, and Mr McLoughlin. Staff of Mt Alvernia College: Ms Kym Smart, Ms Alison Stone and Mrs Paula Egan, and Principal Dr Kerry Tuite, our thanks. The College Services Staff who without their wonderful energy and support in organising everything from bedding and laundry to food and cleaning a camp like this could not run. To Mr Matt Tarlinton, the catering staff, Mrs Barbara Newell and cleaning staff, our sincere thanks. Students from Marist College & Mt Alvernia College: Monique Brooks, Kristy Butler, Tianna Camilleri, Gabe Crisp, Amelia Down, Caitlin Garamy, Rebecca Hull, Lauren Kavanagh, Rebecca Keane, Jordan Kramer, Alex Lavelle, Alice McIntosh, Melissa Rodwell, Megan Schmidt, Caitlin Smith, Chloe Stark, Clare Villalba, Renata Zgraja, Jesse Ainsworth, Luke Arnold, Robert Aston, Mitchell Board, Matthew Bugeja, Ed Burgin, Daryl Choong, Sean Coughlan, Patrick Daly, Jack Deller, Ryan Donnelly, Laurent Dubois, Mitchell Dunn, Lachlan Eyers, Stuart Gilmour, Alexander Grace, Aaron Hanson, Alexander Heinke, Tim Hicks, Luke Hilton, James Jessup, Joseph Knynenburg, Hugh Lilley, Ethan Marrinan, Angus Martin, Nicholas McCarthy, Scott McCarthy, Matthew McKeown, Brendan Mitchell, Jake Morris, Simon O’Hare, Tom Oliver, Jack Phillips, Daniel Quill, Ryan Quinlan, Shaun Retchford, Gabriel Reggi, Nicholas Rigby, Patrick Roggenkamp, Nick Ryall, Joseph Selwood, Jacob Smith, Liam Smith, James Tooley, Dillon Warmington. Joe Knynenburg presented his reflections and thoughts on the camp at the College assembly on Wednesday. Please see below. “Good morning Father Jim, Mr McLoughlin, staff, students and Sony Camp companions. On Friday the 17th of September, whilst the majority of you were getting ready for your holidays, sixty-three volunteers from Marist and Mt Alvernia College were preparing themselves for what was going to be the biggest four days of their lives. Despite undertaking two training days and possibly a bit of personal research, nothing was going to fully prepare them for the task that lay ahead. That task was to become a companion of a disabled child for these four days. A companion you may ask, why a companion and not a care-taker or a simple baby-sitter? The answer is simple. Whilst we were entrusted to perform the day-to-day necessities that included feeding, showering, toileting and clothing them; we were asked to befriend these children, to become their new big brother or sister, or simply their new mate. We were to make them feel like they were at a home away from home. Nick Rigby and I were selected to be the companions of Kai, an eight and a half year old boy who has quad spastic Cerebral Palsy. This means that Kai has little to no control over any part of his body from his neck down. Consequently he is wheel-chair bound and very restricted in his communication abilities. Basically, his only forms of communication were a nod or a shake of his head, and his incredible beaming smile. Initially, this restriction served to be a deterrent to Nick and me, as we struggled to engage Kai with the activities. However as the camp progressed and Kai became familiar with us and vice-versa, we soon discovered that this apparent restriction really was a wonderful lesson. It forced us to closely observe Kai, to monitor his every movement and facial

Mission and Ministry News Continued... expression and soon enough fragments of his personality began to shine through this barrier. This served to teach me a new life-lesson. It taught me to truly focus on what people can do and not what they cannot do. The secondary purpose of the camp was to give the parents of these children some much needed respite. Personally, this was one of the most rewarding aspects of Sony Camp. Kai is an only child and is looked after by his single mother Raylene. I was astounded to hear that this is her only three day break of the entire year. What she was looking forward to most was to go swimming in the ocean, which she usually couldn’t because of Kai’s wheelchair. Again, this astonished me. Swimming at the beach seems like such a regular thing for me to do, and yet it is valued so highly for her. It made me realise that everybody is different. Something that means very little to one person may mean a great deal to another person. This is something that we should all be aware of; always considering the other side of the story before coming to a conclusion in a situation. For each of the companions, Sony Camp 2010 brought about numerous rewarding challenges. All sixty-three of us had different issues to deal with; whether it was getting 10 hours sleep over the three days, being involved in a continual three-day game of tiggy or trying to dodge the constant stream of lasagne that was being launched at our head. We all have our own stories, and our own memories of these amazing children. The camp offered us all a change in perspective and a revaluation of our priorities in life. Each of us now have significant appreciations for the value of communication, the ability to multi-task and the state of being organised. The strong bonds that were formed over these four days will not easily be forgotten. By the end of the four days, Kai was one hundred percent comfortable with Nick and I, and us with him. For me, this fact makes everything that we went through irrelevant. The vomit, the lack of sleep, the changing of nappies; all these disappear behind the image of Kai’s exuberant face as he drove out of the school grounds.” Joe Knynenburg

Solomon Island report Nine excited pilgrims left Australia for the Solomon Islands on the 16th September. Frank Mara, Tom Campbell, Matthew Hayes, Ben Andrews, Declan Morris and Lachlan Thompson accompanied by Mr Josh Mulligan and Brother Mark arrived At St Joseph’s Tenaru just outside Honiara , in time for Rugby training as school had just finished for the day. We had a great opportunity to relate really well with the boys on our first day in the Solomon’s. The next day we flew to Gizo in the Western Province and made our way by boat to St Dominic’s Rural Training Centre at Vanga Point where we would live for the next eight days. The Marist hospitality was overwhelming, this helped all of us, as we made the adjustment to very simple living and diet, long hours both working in the common gardens and classes. All of us had our eyes opened to this new way of living and relating with each other. There were lots of sad feelings as we left the wharf at Vanga for the last time, all the students and teachers came to the wharf at 7am to say goodbye. Arriving back in Honiara, we were thrown into preparations for the graduation ceremony at St Joseph’s Tenaru. It was a great day: the singing, families, dancing all made an impact on us. On final day in Honiara, we had the chance to meet with the Australian High Commissioner who gave us a snapshot of the global issues facing the people of the Solomon’s and how the Australian Government is responding. The Marist family is alive and well in the Solomon’s and it was a privilege to be part of this welcoming and inclusive culture, whose names and faces will remain with us for a long time to come.

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2010

From the Archives Hello to you all again. As promised in the last episode of the Ashgrove story, this time we will explore the Directorship of Brother Valerius Brogan, beginning in 1959. The impression one gets from “Canvas of Dreams” is that the greatest asset Valerius had was himself. Brothers and students universally acknowledged him as “a good bloke”. He dealt with people personally, face to face, and was always a good listener – the sign of a born diplomat. He had no great vision for the College nor any master plan to which he would slavishly adhere – rather was he an advocate of the “if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it” school of thought. And he was pleased with what he found at the College – a group of Brothers of vast experience, each of them hard workers and each of them with a speciality which was of great benefit to the Ashgrove community. In his own words, Valerius summed up his philosophy: “It was like walking into a workshop and seeing a wheel spinning and saying – ‘Oh well, I’ve got to keep this wheel going; everything is set up.’ So it tended to roll on the way it was.” The Director also had no “side” about him: he saw himself as “the figurehead of a very dynamic staff” and worked with his Brothers in co-operative effort a la Cyprian. The positive result was a happy team at the College, and many physical benefits for the community, of which more anon. (The negative side, which was unappreciated at the time, was that the rapidly altering society outside the College gates was going to impact itself on Ashgrove without anyone being aware of the juggernaut which was approaching, and without any preparation being made for change.) The happy team of which Valerius was the head had, however, one member who was definitely NOT happy. Almost incredibly, this person was a vital part of the Ashgrove fabric – the school Chaplain. And yet again, the cause of the aberrant behaviour of the Chaplain could be laid squarely at the door of a character we have met before – Archbishop Duhig. The Archbishop had the responsibility of selecting Chaplains for schools, and Mark Farrelly contends that in some cases Duhig used the schools as dumping grounds for clergy who were sick, worn out, or too fond of the bottle. Whatever the truth of this, there can be little doubt that when the Archbishop told Father William Cuneo that he had been appointed to Ashgrove as Chaplain in 1958, the squarest of square pegs was being aimed at the roundest of round holes. Cuneo, whose heart’s desire was a parish of his own, had recently left a missionary order because they insisted on giving him teaching appointments against his will. Now he was aghast to discover that Duhig considered his previous appointments made him an ideal choice for Ashgrove. The result was a disaster of Basil Fawlty proportions. Cuneo did his job at Ashgrove for a time, though with ill-concealed lack of grace; then he began exhibiting some bizarre behaviour, either in desperation or anger. He insisted to Valerius that, as a priest, he should have the right to sit at the top of the table and to lead the Brothers’ community in saying Grace. Valerius, ever diplomatic, explained to Cuneo that only the Director had that right. The Chaplain stormed out, fulminating against those who dared to challenge the dignity of the priesthood. At the next meal, the Brothers discovered Cuneo with a table for one set for himself, his back deliberately turned to the Brothers. Worse was to follow: the Chaplain began to use his sermons to the boys to complain about trivial matters, and to reflect on what he saw as failings in the behaviour of the Brothers towards his priestly person. The Brothers were “sore provoked” in Mark Farrelly’s phrase, scarcely able to believe that a grown man would act as Cuneo was doing, and involving the students of the College as well. Little short of open warfare prevailed between the community and the Chaplain, and all the diplomacy and charm of Valerius could not reverse the trend: there was an inescapable conclusion – Cuneo had to go. The priest made sure of this by writing to the Provincial with his complaints, claiming that Valerius and the Brothers at Ashgrove were against him, but succeeding only in convincing the Provincial that Ashgrove desperately needed another Chaplain. This black comedy played itself out to the end when Cuneo gained his wish in 1960: he left Ashgrove…..to a posting at the mental asylum at Goodna. And on that farcical note, we will pause. The next episode will examine the work of various Brothers in the time of Valerius, and investigate the mighty contribution the Men’s Committee made to the development of facilities at Ashgrove. Until then, From The Archives, Dave Cameron: 38584591 or camerond@marash.qld.edu.au

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS Junior School News Dear Parents, Staff and Boys, Welcome back to the last term of 2010. As usual it’s a busy term which will pass very quickly indeed. I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break. It was lovely to welcome our boys back to school on Monday 4th October, all safely back with us. Thank you for the work and time that would have gone into getting the boys ready for their new term. Towards the end of last term a few members of the Junior School Staff attended a presentation by Brother David Hall, who has just completed his Doctorate in the USA and has been appointed Headmaster at Marcellin College in Sydney. The quote below was part of Brother David’s presentation and I share it with you today and a short Reflection. “In Marist Catholic schools, perhaps now more than ever, there is the opportunity to bring faith and culture into vigorous dialogue. This opportunity finds its source in the mood and nuance of contemporary Australian society; a society, questioning in hope for more balance, yet to be found in our complex world in transition.” We have the ideal opportunity and, indeed, the ideal setting in the Junior School to begin this journey of bringing faith and society into dialogue – in other words – to integrate faith and society more. One of the most important words in the above quotation is ‘balance’. We hear the yearning for balance so often in today’s society: balance between work and home, balance between TV and physical activity, balance between religion and daily life, balance between busyness and relaxation. In one sentence we can articulate the aim of a Marist Education; “to make the person of Jesus Christ relevant to young people.” These simple words should be reflected in all our dealings and interactions. We don’t achieve this all the time; we are very frail human beings, but it’s an ideal that we should have before us at all times. This aim, or ideal, would bring about the opportunity expressed by Brother David as it would open our young people to the liberating message of Jesus, who expressed his faith in the culture of his time. Jesus stated that he wished his followers to live full lives which means simply, living our faith in the world in which we find ourselves. With all its troubles and difficulties, it’s still a beautiful life. This is where balance is important. We should live a life that is life giving for ourselves and those around us. We hope that we inculcate in our boys, from the time they begin at Marist College in Year 5, that God wishes them to be safe, happy and content, but aware that the person of Jesus Christ guides them to achieve balance. The message of Jesus is challenging as having a ‘balanced or integrated life’, a life that is open to the Christian message is not easy. As we begin Term 4, I gratefully thank the Junior School Staff and parents for their true example and support as we all strive to ensure that our boys grow into compassionate, loving and balanced men, who embrace the world in which they live. Here are some items of interest for the start of Term 4: “Walk for the Innocents”: Friday 27th August, 2010: Thank you to all the Junior School families who supported this great event a few weeks ago. A letter of thanks was received on Friday 8th October from Mr. Rod Fernan, Secretary, with the following details: “For your information, the money raised in support of the ‘Walk for Innocents’ amounted to $4,140. 30. On behalf of the Innocents Relief (IR), I would like to offer our thanks for the overwhelming support of the project from the teachers, staff, students and parents. We will endeavour to provide your College with some feed-back on the progress of the kitchen up-grade.” Year 8, 2011: Our Year 7 boys have a few short weeks left in the Junior School and then they begin their exciting new journey into secondary school. We always wish that the Year 7’s last term is a happy experience for each of them, so we ask for their complete co-operation over the coming weeks. They are a great group of young men. I am very proud of them and I am sure they will enjoy their remaining time with us. Here are some important details for you to remember for Term 4: (1) Year 8, 2011 Information Evening: Tuesday 26th October: This is a very important meeting for boys and their parents and I encourage you to attend. If your son will not be returning to the College for Year 8, 2011, you do not need to attend. The evening begins at 7.00pm and will be held in the Champagnat Centre (College Gym). I will inform the boys of which House they have been placed on Tuesday 26th October, after lunch.

Junior School Sport Athletics Carnival Wrap-Up Congratulations to our CIC Track and Field squad who competed at the CIC Championships held at UQ St Lucia on Monday 6th September and at QSAC on Wednesday 8th of September. The overall results are posted below with Marist College Ashgrove finishing 4th overall in the Purple Division (which is effectively 1st division). The boys should be congratulated on their efforts both at training and during competition. This season we had a squad of 75 boys qualify based on the criteria of attendances at training and also at the UQ meets on Saturday mornings throughout Term 3. Results can be found on the Junior School Sport webpage under Track & Field; then click on the link titled – CIC T&F Carnival – Final Results.

2010 Athletics Summary from Mrs Stanton (Junior School Athletics Convenor) It was a very successful athletics season for the junior school boys with the hard work of the whole team resulting in a 4th placing in our division. The boys this season showed a lot of commitment and determination in training and at the Saturday morning competitions, which made the improved result possible. It was very difficult to select the final CIC squad because all of the boys trained so hard and we wished we could have picked them all in the final team which competed at the CIC Championships. The highlight for me this season was the leadership shown by the yr 7 boys at training and the enthusiasm of the new yr 5 boys who kept the older boys on their toes. It would be great to be able to bottle the enthusiasm with which they trained and strived to improve. Also, the sportsmanship shown by those boys who trained but did not make the team, and the humility of those boys who did, showed true Marist spirit. The coaches’ job was made so much easier by the boys’ willingness to train hard, do their best and encourage each other. Athletics is an individual sport but at Marist we strive to make it a real team effort and the relay results were a highlight of the season. The fantastic cheer squad of boys in the stands at the Championships helped all the teams to lift and subsequently we had boys who ran personal best times to earn the Marist team valuable points. It was a pleasure working with such hard working and motivated young people and see them reap the rewards for their efforts. Individual Achievements A big congratulations to Lachlan McKinnon who was selected in the Queensland Select Rugby Team at the Invitational 12 years Rugby Carnival which was held in Caloundra on September 12. Lachlan will forever be remembered as the first Marist College Ashgrove boy to be selected in this team, as the carnival is only in its second year. Lachlan represented Metropolitan North at these Championships along with Josh Neill and Liam Coulson. The Met North Team was crowned State Champions at this Carnival which is another outstanding achievement for these boys. Great work!! Campbell Mohr has been selected to be part of the U/13 Stingers Representative Rugby League Development Squad, where he will take part in 4 development coaching days before a residential camp in early March 2011. Good work Campbell. I hope you enjoy the experience of being part of an elite Rugby League Development Program. We wish James Graham all the best at the State Championships for Track & Field next week. James will travel to Townsville to compete in the High Jump at the State Championships. James has displayed an enormous amount of dedication to his Track & Field this season and deserves to be rewarded with a place at the State Championships.

Josh Neill will also represent Metropolitan North in cricket next month. Josh will travel to Cairns for the State Championships and compete from November 14-17 with the ultimate goal of being selected in the Queensland U/12 Cricket Team. We wish Josh all the best and congratulate him on his progress through the representative pathway thus far. After an undefeated season for our 5A basketball team it was great to hear two boys Matthew Richards and Ben Fracchia were selected to represent Brisbane in Basketball for the U/14 age group. An amazing achievement, but after watching the outstanding 5A team compete in our recent CIC Basketball season, I must say, I am not surprised. Great
