From the Headmaster Dear members of the Marist College Community, Although Peter Fowler passed away over three weeks ago, it still seems very surreal to be writing to you all about his loss. I will always have three strong memories of Peter: 1. His positive outlook. Always encouraging of everyone he encountered. As a former Principal, he always gave me encouragement and support at all times. 2. His love of sport, especially the Swans. My last conversation with Peter was about the upcoming game with Hawthorn. His positive outlook again was right. 3. Always impeccably dressed in a superbly pressed white business shirt. I’d like to congratulate our boys, the staff and parents of our Marist Family. The respect the boys showed following Peter’s death certainly filled me with pride in our boys, both current and recent Old Boys. They allowed their teachers and friends the opportunity to grieve whilst outwardly showing the utmost respect to Peter’s memory and his family. St Marcellin would indeed be proud of them. Please find following the eulogy prepared by Mr Jon Fitzgerald, Peter’s colleague and friend in both the College and Boarding school. Please continue to pray for the repose of Peter’s soul and for his family especially his children Michael and Elizabeth. Yours in Jesus, Mary and St Marcellin, Peter McLoughlin Headmaster

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2010

Peter John Francis Fowler I stand before you today to provide a very small insight into the multi- dimensional life of Peter Francis John Fowler, or as many at Marist College Ashgrove staff affectionately knew Peter simply as “Chook”. Peter commenced his time at Marist College Ashgrove at the start of the 2004 school year, where he accepted the position of Head of KLA SOSE. On arriving at Marist, Peter brought with him a wealth of experience which included most notably: Head of Department at Rockhampton Grammar School and Scotch College Melbourne Master in Charge of Rowing at Scotch College Melbourne Deputy Principal – The Girls Grammar School Rockhampton and an achievement of which he was very proud – Foundation Principal of Saint Stephen’s College in Gladstone. Peter did all of this, and along the way completed a Bachelor Degree and two Masters Degrees. It is little wonder why the College welcomed Peter with open arms. I have it on very good authority from a member of the interview panel which offered Peter the SOSE position that quote “Peter was the best interviewee he has seen in all his 25 years at the College”. A ringing endorsement indeed!! Over time, it was clear that Peter was highly respected by his fellow Heads of KLA and staff alike. An insight into this was handed to me yesterday by a fellow Head of KLA and reads as follows; “Aside from his annoying trait of always having his office immaculately tidy with not a loose paper in sight, and everything neatly filed in labeled folders (putting the other KLA offices to shame by comparison), Pete marked himself from the beginning of his time here at Marist as the ultimate professional educator. He was a careful listener, one who didn’t jump to conclusions about issues and paid respect to everyone’s views and ideas. He had an ability to encapsulate neatly the view of any discussion and often brought to the table insightful reflections on the matter at hand. He was always a team man and would give full support to any agreed position or proposal and worked actively to help his team of teachers on initiatives. He will be sorely missed by this group of educators for both his supreme professionalism as well as his loyal camaraderie” As a teacher in the SOSE department I agree with all of the above. Peter would always be there for support when we needed it. His daily round of the common room to touch base with SOSE staff on any curriculum issues was special and something I will miss. At this point, I must admit however that when Peter came and touched base with me on a daily basis, within a few sentences we were both talking about sport (Rugby, AFL - the up’s and downs of South Melbourne now known as the Sydney Swan’s , horse racing, cricket and best bets across all sports in Australia for the coming week. More on this later. Apart from being a curriculum leader, Peter was an excellent teacher. It is clear that students in Peter’s classes were motivated by his passion and knowledge in everything he taught. Peter commanded respect

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2010

Peter John Francis Fowler Continued... and students “gave to him in droves”. His professionalism was such that Peter was never late to a class he was teaching. In fact he would always make a point of being the first one there. For years I know there were competitions by students to try and stall Peter so the boys could “get one up on him”, but it never worked!! Peter’s professionalism was also evident in that he came to school each day immaculately dressed in a white business shirt (perfectly pressed) and tie, even in February. As a mark of respect all male members of staff at Marist today are wearing that same outfit. In addition to this, Peter was always busy making time to talk to students who would come to his office and talk over concerns with their work, or just wanting to chat to him about things in general. The very many recent past students who continued to maintain contact with him after school is testament to how well he related to his students. In Boarding, Peter was one of a kind. He worked in Years 8, 12 and more recently Year 10 dormitories. In his time in Year 12 I can safely say I have not seen a more professional boarding supervisor. Peter was hard but fair. I knew that when Peter was on duty the boys were in safe hands. Just like in the day school, Peter had the boys respect. His attention to detail on an evening shift was incredible!! Finally, I would like to talk about Peter, my colleague. To all staff here at Marist, Peter was a person who would always made you feel good. So many people have said to me that Peter would always be the first person to congratulate you on a job well done. He was selfless in this regard. That was just his nature. His morning tea chats were legendary and he could certainly hold a room with some of his stories. One of Peter’s great passions was sport. AFL in particular was right up there. Peter was a fanatical stats man. One of the stats he prided himself on was being able to recall both the score and Best on Ground of any of the VFL/ AFL Grand Finals in the Post War WWII era. His love for the Sydney Swans AFL Team was undeniable. In 2005 the Swans won the AFL Premiership for the first time in 72 years. Peter was at the MCG to see this live with his father. He told me on many occasions that it was one of the greatest days of his life. Second to his love of the Sydney Swans was Peter’s love of horseracing. He was a keen punter and he did his research. Peter’s ability to multitask suited him well in this regard on Saturday mornings at Valley’s under age cricket where he would umpire. It has been reported to me by a good source that on the occasions when Peter umpired, he would have his ear piece in listening to the races at the same time umpiring and doing the score book. As stated at the outset what I have outlined to you is only a small portion of the multi-dimensional life of Peter John Francis Fowler. It is still hard to believe that he has gone, and one can only thank God for a faith that believes there is more to life than we experience on this earth and that we come across this good man later on down the track. Good bye and God bless. Jon Fitzgerald – Teacher Marist College Ashgrove

Father’s Day Best wishes to all dads for Father’s Day this coming Sunday September 5. The next newsletter will contain a reflection on fathers. Co-curricular activities Twice this year (first term and at Assembly last week) I have spoken to the boys about the importance of active participation in College activities. At this time it is necessary to remind all boys and parents of one of the areas of the College enrolment policy: “Co-curricular activities include creative, sport and service endeavours which are integral to the curriculum of the College and are important ways in which the gifts of every student can be nurtured and shared. As designated in the College calendar, and on other occasions arising from our membership of the Associated Independent Colleges [AIC] or Combined Independent Colleges [CIC], co-curricular participation is required as part of the life of the College and integral to the growth and development of each student. Participation by all, according to the relative abilities of each student is mandatory. If a student has ability in a co-curricular activity and this activity is offered at the College, he would be expected to contribute by representing the College. Participation in College co-curricular activities takes precedence over fixtures offered by outside organisations.“ It is of concern to me that an ever increasing number of boys believe they have a right to ignore the commitment to which this statement requires. All boys and their parents/guardians are expected to be faithful to all aspects of the enrolment policy.

P&F News Our Annual General Meeting was held on Monday, August 2 and the elected office bearers are as follows: Committee Members 2010-2011 President: Vice president Secretary: Asst Secretary Treasurer Amity Boarders support: Boys issues Card days Teaching and Learning Sports canteen Walkathon

Brett Heyward John Shanahan and Debbie Moloney Jonnie De Lacy Monica Smith Ewen Thompson Karen Ryan Michelle Carmody and Gillian Semple Monica Smith and Pip Mc Glinn (Solo Parents group) Vacant Karen Bate and Sandie Downes Roberta Bannah Alan and Adele Hamilton

On your behalf we welcome our new committee members who have generously volunteered to fill these roles, and thank those committee members who have offered to remain on committee for 2010-2011. We welcome Brett Heyward as our new President - our only new committee member at this time. Brett has sons in Year 8 and 10. We still have vacancies in the Card Day subcommittee and are keen to hear from anyone who may like to join us. We thank the retiring committee members who have been outstanding in their commitment to the P&F. We farewell Alan Hamilton from the executive committee after a year in the role of President. Alan has been extremely generous with his time, particularly in the many meetings which have involved planning for projects relating to the new Science Centre. Although stepping down from the President’s role, Alan and Adele will continue to act as co-ordinators for the Walkathon. We farewell Bernie Reddaway (4 years on Amity committee) and Jane Kinsella (2 years on Sports canteen) both of whom have their youngest sons completing Year 12. We thank Bernie for being the “smiling face” that has welcomed so many parents to Marist College; for her enormous efforts “behind the scenes” at all our social events and for being the best ‘barmaid” at all the Year Dinners! We also wish Bernie a speedy recovery from her recent hip surgery. We thank Jane for the enormous effort she has put into the sports canteen over the last 2 years. This canteen raises significant funds for our College- without the generosity of parents such as Jane the canteen would not survive. We hope Jane will think of us on Saturdays in 2011 when she is relaxing at home! Ladies, we thank you for your enthusiasm and wish you all the best with your own personal endeavours next year. We also thank Lisa Gelsomino and Janine Sharman who will step down from the Card Day committee after 2 years in this role, but will continue to assist the new convenors. Our sincere thanks must also go to Peter Mc Loughlin, Michael Druce and Richard Ward for their constant support of the P&F, and to the teaching staff and support staff behind the scenes. In particular we thank Kay Wells, the ladies of the reception and finance offices and Garry Lawler, Matt Tarlinton and the services staff. One of the major goals of the P&F this year was to have a personal presence at as many College functions and events as possible. We are proud to say that we have had committee volunteers at • every Year Binner • every boarder’s return to school • most sports events • every forum • and every gym dance as well as many other functions. We hope to continue this commitment in 2010-2011. Thankyou for your support, Deb Moloney

Mission and Ministry News Continued... Year 11 Marist Forum 2010 James Byrne Centre, Highlands The Year 11 Marist Forum is a gathering of students form Marist schools throughout Queensland and Northern New South Wales designed to deepen a sense of Marist Identity, Spirituality and Mission in a creative environment. By offering opportunities to further develop leadership abilities as well as be engaged through guest speakers and dynamic Duncan Stephens & Nick Coughlan presented the following report on behalf of the group at last Wednesday’s assembly. “Good morning boys, staff, Father Jim and Mr McLoughlin. Last weekend, 8 Year 11 students from the College consisting of Nick Coughlan, Alex McGuire, Jack Watson, Luke O’Toole, Dennis Gibson, Marvin Pleintinger, Bowden Trott and myself, travelled to Toowoomba to attend the Year 11 Marist Forum. Unable to know what we’d expect, we were surprised at the wider Marist world that exists outside our own school, After arriving, unpacking and enjoying a meal and good table tennis, the boys realised that this weekend was more than we expected. It ended up being a weekend that would test our leadership skills, a chance to relax with other Marist students and explore the idea of ‘Social Justice’. We arrived at the John Byrne Centre that night and were immediately introduced to boys and girls from all different Marist schools from around QLD and NSW. Such places included Lismore, NSW, Mt Maria College in Mitchelton, Trinity College Beenleigh, Noosa, and Casino, NSW. We were then introduced to our forum leaders for the weekend Christian Noblisa and Br Tony who visited our school last week. The days consisted of team building games, group prayer and discovering a new knowledge of social justice both locally and globally. The weekend challenged most of us to come out of our shells and do activities that we would not usually can we make a difference to the lives of other people and fun activities, theatre sports and the karaoke. As a group we discussed different ways of reaching out to others, especially as we move into Year 12 at our respective schools. All of the boys came out of the forum with a better understanding of what it means to be in solidarity with marginalized people in our own community; a better understanding of what it meant to be a leader, but most of all a better understanding of what it meant to be Marist, and with that we would like to thank everyone involved.

Mission and Ministry News Continued... Alice Springs Immersion- 7th-14th August

Over the Exhibition Break, Year 11 boys Ben Emmott, Zac O’Brien, Tim Tracey, Marty Busby, Kenny Lopez-Loo, Will Redmond and Myles Darwin, as well as Luke McMahon, Katy Ward and Brother Mark travelled west to Santa Teresa for our immersion experience. Santa Teresa is a remote Aboriginal Community of around 600 people, a one-hour drive south of Alice Springs. It began in the early hours of Saturday the 7th, when we all met at the airport to depart for our one night stay at Uluru. After arriving and sleeping the night in the Northern Territory, we were once again up early to see the sun rise over Uluru, before heading to Santa Teresa via a quick stop in Alice Springs. Upon arrival we were met by Brother Rod and Sister Liz, who both play crucial roles in running the mission and school out there. The school is where we spent most of our next 5 days, assisting and tutoring in classrooms, playing with the kids at recess, and helping out with a bit of gardening, maintenance and building around the school and community. There was also no shortage of AFL, basketball and quiet Overall, it was an amazing experience that gave a real insight into the ways that people from another community within our own country experience life - a life that is so different to ours. (Myles Darwin) Rosies Visits- Friday 20th August & Wednesday 25th August Rosies Youth Mission offers a small number of our senior students the opportunity to experience their ministry on the street, by way of a one night street retreat. As part of the Rosies Outreach Team our students served drinks, chatted to patrons of the van and made them feel welcome. Thanks to Mr. Paul Kearney for his support of this program and for taking Ryan Donnelly, Sean Coughlan, Jack Phillips, Jordie Ellis on Friday the 20th August, and for taking Ethan Marrinan, Andrew Brough, Joe Knynenburg and Richard Ta on Wednesday 25th August.

From the Archives Continued... Hello to you all again. We left the College as Brother Ferrer Robinson concluded his six year stint as Director in 1958. His replacement in the top job was selected by the new Provincial, Brother Quentin Duffy, and the choice came as a surprise to many in the Order. Brother Valerius Brogan was regarded as relatively inexperienced, not least by himself, and he privately treated rumours that he would be made Director of Ashgrove as a joke. The reality that he would be Director came when the 1959 appointments of Brothers were published, and Valerius viewed his task with some trepidation. He need not have worried: the Provincial knew what he was doing. Valerius was 29 years old, and had been teaching for 10 years, a minute amount of time compared to some of the Brothers in his community. Yet in that 10 years, he had built up an impressive list of subjects taught, including English, Modern and Ancient History, Maths, Physics and Geography, and he had impressed Quentin Duffy with his enthusiasm and competence – he was a “natural” in the classroom, respected and admired by his students. Allied to this, the young Director possessed many admirable personal qualities, being gregarious, charming, a good listener, and having (like so many of his peers) a quick intelligence and a capacity for hard work – he faced challenges, but Valerius was well equipped to overcome them. Undoubtedly, too, Quentin Duffy was not concerned about the relative inexperience of Valerius, because he was surrounded at Ashgrove by Brothers of enormous experience who understood the culture of the school, (and had indeed done much personally to help mould that culture.) People like Brothers Peter Carrick, Regis Daly, and Francis McMahon were fountains of knowledge on which Valerius could draw. Valerius might be an “apprentice” (in Mark Farrelly’s phrase), but he had some very useful accumulated wisdom at his disposal. And every bit of wisdom and experience would be needed, for challenges there were in plenty. We have made the point before in our story, and will return to it again: the College is a fascinating place, a community of its own, but it cannot isolate itself from changes that are occurring outside its gates. Those changes impact on the College and its students in many ways, and force changes inside the MCA community, willingly or unwillingly, knowingly or unwittingly. Change of itself is inevitable, yet what would be astonishing about the decade of the Sixties was the rapidity and pace of that change. The United States and the Soviet Union would confront each other in the phenomenon known as the Cold War; an American President, and later his brother, would be gunned down by assassins; the world would come within an inch of nuclear holocaust in the Cuban missile crisis; technology would advance in leaps and bounds: television became the new medium of communication, and man walked on the moon; the Rock and Roll music of the young would soon throw up a group called the Beatles; the Vietnam War was in its infancy, and the Liberal Party government of R G Menzies in Australia would shortly announce that it was introducing conscription for National Service. The old certainties were either going or gone: the British Empire was no more, and Australia was committed to the US alliance; World Communism was the threat, particularly in Asia; the stage was being set for the battle of the Generation Gap, a confrontation where the youth of the developed countries would challenge the accumulated wisdom of their elders, and where the established trinity of God, Queen and Country would be disregarded by many in Australia. “Make love, not war” would become a familiar catchcry. In short, the world was changing at bewildering pace, and the old institutions of Church, school, family and traditional authority would all be called into question. It is against this background that Valerius Brogan took up his directorship in 1959, but just how the College would be affected is a story for another day……. Until next time, From The Archives, Dave Cameron 38584591 or camerond@marash.qld.edu.au

Junior School News Dear Parents, Staff and Boys, This will be the final Junior News for Term 3 and will cover the final weeks of the term and the first two weeks of Term 4. I will, however, communicate any further information to you via e-mail, should this be necessary. At the end of the term, we are all tired, we lead very busy lives. Now is the time to slow down, if at all possible, and to devote some time to what is most important – our relationships with our loved ones – family and friends. If Spirituality is to be any benefit for us, it needs to affect our lives, in other words, the way we live each day. I share with you a Reflection, by Jean Pierre de Caussade, where he reflects on what having faith can bring to our daily lives. Each line has a powerful yet simple message.

Arrangements for 2011: This is my usual request at this time of the year. If you are planning to withdraw your son/s from the College at the end of 2010, please would you inform me as soon as possible. As you are aware, we have long waiting lists for all classes in the Junior School, so this information assists me greatly. I always keep this information confidential. Please note, Year 7 parents, that if your son will not be entering Year 8 at Marist College in 2011, I need to know this information as well as this affects the numbers I send to the Senior School.

Year 7 Dance: Friday 27 August, 2010. A very enjoyable evening, especially for the boys, who, I believe, were great hosts and really enjoyed themselves. The support and help from parents was greatly appreciated and I thank each one of you for your assistance, especially the mums and dads who stood out on the tennis courts selling chips, drinks and chocolates. It was a very chilly night. Security is always so important on these evenings and the parental help at the doors was essential, especially at the beginning and end of the evening. Thank you to you all!

Somerville House Chess Competition: Sunday 22 August, 2010. The final Somerville House Chess Competition took place on the 22 August and the Junior School was represented by three teams and one independent player. I thank these boys for representing the College so well in this competition. There were 46 teams in all and the results were as follows: 4th Place: Bailey Ainsworth (Year 6 Red) (Captain); Jack O’Connor (Year 6 Blue); Henry Smith (Year 5 Gold) and Tavish Healy (Year 6 Blue). 5th Place: Liam Dale (Year 7 Gold) (Captain); Andrew Mather (Year 7 Blue); Jordan Maes (Year 7 Blue) and Harrison Bowles (Year 6 Blue). 35th Place: Michael Fairbairn (Year 7 Blue) Captain; Connor O’Farrell (Year 6 Red); Callum Ross (Year 5 Gold) and Joseph O’Toole (Year 5 Gold). Zachery Coman (Year 5 Blue) played as an independent player and Zachery’s presence was much appreciated by the team he joined – Saint Ignatius School. I wish to thank and pay tribute to the Year 7 players who have represented the Junior School so well over the past years – Liam Dale and Jordan Maes. Both these boys have been very committed to Chess and their contribution and expertise will be missed in 2011, but I hope they will play Chess in the Senior School.

ƌġƉĞƐ͕ ĐƌġƉĞƐ ĂŶĚ ŵŽƌĞ ĐƌġƉĞƐ͊ On 30 July students came pouring into school to be met by the fabulous decorations set up around the hand-ball courts by boys and Madame. This is where the boys with hats would later parade.

The objective of the hat parade was for students to be as creative as possible with designing a hat going with the theme of France. And how the students fulfilled the task! The hats were wonderful!

The hat parade lasted for the duration of the morning break that day. It was judged by some of the student leaders and the winner, Alex Darwin, won the fabulous prize of going to an amazing French restaurant where he will get the opportunity to taste escargots (snails)!

There was a grand total of 150 boys who brought hats to school. Madame promised a home-made crêpe to all these boys. At lunch time, the boys from each class would come out to receive their crêpes, savouring the flavour or consuming them in a blink of an eye. Madame finally finished the crêpes distribution around the 24 August! Merci beaucoup Madame! Liam Dale 7Gold

Junior School Sport The conclusion of Term 3 signals the conclusion of C.I.C. Sport for 2010 and it’s appropriate at this stage to acknowledge the efforts of the many people who assist with the effective implementation of Junior School Sport. Firstly, I would like to thank the boys for their sportsmanship and efforts in all sports. Without their commitment and participation to all C.I.C. Sports the reputation of Ashgrove Sport would not be what it is. The parents of these boys make many sacrifices to allow for their sons to actively participate in Sport. They obviously recognise the importance of school sport and without their support Ashgrove Sport would not operate as smoothly. Throughout the year we have many volunteers who offer their time to contribute towards Junior School Sport. Many of these volunteers come from our parenting body and it is always appreciated when they contribute at carnivals, games and training sessions. Special mention must go to those parents who have proactively assisted throughout the year in all Sports. In the true Marist spirit these parents constantly give of themselves to the College without ever questioning what they are going to receive in return. We are fortunate enough to have wonderful grounds-staff who prepare our amazing fields for the different sporting seasons. The Coaches and Referees allow all our games to run efficiently and without incident. Thanks. Finally, the Junior School staff who make my job so much easier with their willingness to commit to all Sports. I recognize that their efforts go above and beyond their role descriptions and they should be appreciated more for their commitment to continuing the mission of Marcellin Champagnat.

C.I.C. Track and Field 2010 On Monday 6 September and Wednesday 8 September the C.I.C. Track and Field Championships will transpire. Congratulations to all the boys who trained hard and performed well during the lead-up carnivals. It was extremely difficult to settle on the final C.I.C. Athletics squad. This is a testament to the hard work put in by many athletes but unfortunately all cannot be selected. On Monday 6 September our Track and Field squad will travel to the University of Queensland Athletics Complex where the Shot Put, High Jump, Long Jump and 800m event will be contested. After Tuesday to recuperate the team will then venture to Q.S.A.C, where they will contest the 1500m, Hurdles, 100m, 200m and relays. All of the athletes should be congratulated on their application to the season. Special thanks must also go to Krishna Stanton, Matthew Green, John Nunan, Jack Conway and Jamie Brauer for all their efforts with the boys.

Tennis 2010 The 2010 C.I.C. tennis season to date has been most pleasing with the Ashgrove boys approaching their matches seriously and with enthusiasm. I would like to thank the parents for their extra special efforts in getting the boys to their matches during those busy Saturday mornings. This season in particular has been a challenge given that our ‘home’ courts are located at Chandler! I have been very pleased with the attitude of all our players this year and have always been happy with the on-court character of our players, regardless of the outcome of the matches. Nearly all teams have tasted success so far this season, a wonderful result in such a hard competition. With two rounds to go I would encourage the boys to keep up the hard work and dedication. Scott Murphy – Coordinator & Coach of Tennis

C.I.C Tennis 2010 I would like to make special mention of Scott Murphy and Michael Druce for their efforts in organising the boys. Scott especially contributes enormous amounts to the overall Sports Program; apart from teaching his 5 Blue Class he coaches the Junior Swim squad every afternoon and morning during Term 4, Christmas holidays and Term 1; coaches both a Rugby Team and the Cross-Country Team during Term 2 and then in Term 3 commits to a Basketball Team and the Tennis Squad. Thank you Scott, for your precious time and expertise in all areas.

C.I.C. Basketball 2010 The C.I.C. Basketball season concludes on the last weekend of the term, with final round matches against Nudgee College. Overall, the Junior School Basketball program had a good season with many fine victories, large numbers of interest in the sport and numerous well performed teams. The real measure of a successful season is seeing so many boys enjoy their Basketball whilst being part of a team and playing sport with their mates. After a long and arduous season, there are always many people who should be acknowledged for their hard work and dedication in helping the Junior School Basketball program. I would like to express my deepest thanks to the following groups of people: -

Individual Sporting Achievements Over the past couple of weeks we have had some outstanding individual achievements. For the second time in history an Under 12 Metropolitan North Rugby Team was selected. The College sent 6 boys along to trial for selection in the team with four boys performing amazingly well and gaining subsequent selection in the Regional Team. They were Josh Neill, Lachlan McKinnon, Reece Day and Liam Coulson. These boys will travel to the Sunshine Coast for the State Championships on Sunday 12 September. Last week we had another dozen boys travel to Nudgee College for the Met North Track and Field Championships. A special mention must go to James Graham and Jackson Courtney who will represent Metropolitan North at the State Championships in Townsville. Junior School Sports News JUNIOR SCHOOL SPORT CAPTAINS REPORT Congratulations to the boys who are participating in Term 3 sport. It has been inspiring to see the amount of Junior School students involved in Basketball, Track & Field and Tennis. Although there are only a minimal number of weeks left in the sporting year, always remember how important it is to attend training sessions as you are letting your teammates and coaches down if you are not totally committed. With the CIC athletics carnival arriving in two weeks time, we would like you to attend as many training sessions as possible and train as hard as you can, not as hard as the person beside you. On behalf of the Junior School we would like to thank Mrs Stanton and the other Track and Field coaches who generously dedicate their time to come down to help the boys. For the remainder of this years’ sport, Josh and I would like to remind you of the acronym T. E. A. M. This means: T E A M

ogether veryone chieves ore

Some examples of how we can apply the T.E.A.M. acronym: _ ! " " ` _ { " " " " _ # " _ | _ | Josh and I are certain that if we continue to apply the T.E.A.M. rule, we can achieve more, gain the respect of other schools, and more importantly, be a better team! 2010 FINALS REVIEW The Marist College Ashgrove Under 14 Australian Rules season concluded on Monday, August 16, with the AIC Grand * | " 9 }*|9~ 9 " overwhelmed Saint Peter’s College, 112 points to 1. Saint Patrick’s were formidable opponents in the preliminary rounds and in the initial stages of the Grand Final contest this was again evident. At one point the margin was reduced to seven points in Ashgrove’s favour after a blistering start where the ‘Blue and Golds’ kicked three goals straight. After absorbing the early pressure, Ashgrove steadied and then % / *|9 # € Marist College Ashgrove Saint Patrick’s College

The dominant players for Ashgrove were Sam Clarke (Captain and voted Best on Ground by the umpires), Mitch Trelevan, Danny Conway, Max Frisby and Sam Walker. I would like to congratulate the boys on their efforts during the season. They have been outstanding ambassadors for

At a point in time where the College no longer enjoys the supremacy it once exerted over the AIC sporting competition, maybe we will all savour our victories a little more and the boys will learn to appreciate the effort and endeavour required of them to make it happen. So too will the Ashgrove community need to acknowledge that to stay on top, you can’t sit idly and expect things to happen the way they once did. The challenge is there for us all!
