From the Headmaster Dear Members of the Marist College Community, Resilience is defined as the ability to recover quickly from illness, change or misfortune; buoyancy. Albert Bandura wrote, “In order to succeed, people need a sense of self-efficacy, to struggle together with resilience to meet the inevitable obstacles and inequities of life.” Resilience is very much a part of twenty first century living. Life constantly presents us with obstacles and inequities. An article appeared on June 27 in The Sunday Age newspaper in Melbourne. It was about an AFL footballer. His name is Michael Barlow. Michael grew up in country Victoria and attended a Marist school – Assumption College, Kilmore. His road to being the number two contender for the AFL’s top individual honour, the Brownlow Medal, was complicated by many obstacles: • Dropped from the Goulburn Valley Under 15 schoolboys squad. He then played against this team for his school and played a standout game. • The last man dropped from the Victorian Country team in 2007. • The manager of the Shepparton United team Michael played for convinced a St Kilda talent scout to come and look at him. He trained with St Kilda for the 2008 pre-season but they decided he wasn’t what they were looking for. • By last November Michael was included in a second VFL (Victorian Football League) team of the year. Again he wasn’t selected by an AFL team. • Then he trained with Essendon and they chose someone else, Kyle Hardingham. Freemantle wanted Hardingham too, but settled on Barlow. Many successes in this his first AFL season had Michael recognized as the potential Rookie of the Year then on July 3 he suffered a horrific injury that ended his brilliant debut season. A clash against Port Adelaide left Michael with a severely broken leg. He’s determined to bounce back. He’s obviously a very resilient young man surrounded by the love and support of his family and determined to resume playing for the Dockers. So through adversity comes an enviable resilience. Brad Henry writes, “Something called the ‘Oklahoma Standard’ became known throughout the world. It means resilience in the face of adversity. It means strength and compassion that will not be defeated.” The “Oklahoma Standard” was born in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City Bombing. In April 1995, Oklahomans dropped everything to assist their friends and neighbours, co-workers and strangers. The response following the blast can only be described as amazing. First responders from across the state and nation converged in downtown Oklahoma City to rescue the living and then honorably recover the victims. Citizens lined up in record numbers to donate blood. Any call for supplies was answered without question or hesitation in overwhelming numbers. The Oklahoma Standard continues to be the benchmark against which all efforts are measured. It is a high standard we expect to meet and Oklahomans are always up to the challenge. St Marcellin had to show great resilience in establishing recognition for his Marist Brothers. Until his death in 1840 he overcame many obstacles in establishing the Order, creating schools and giving hope to so many. Our hope is that our boys will develop that inner belief that will make them resilient young men and positive contributors to our society. Yours in Jesus, Mary and St Marcellin, Peter McLoughlin Headmaster

Celebrate 70 years of Marist spirit at the

BLUE & GOLD BALL GIVES ITS ALL FOR NEW SCIENCE CENTRE Only days to go until Marist’s premier social event of the year takes centre stage at the College. On Saturday night more than 600 glamorous guests will hit the red carpet and dance floor with two things on their mind: to have fun and raise money for Marist’s new science centre.

2010 BLUE &GOLD BALL 7.00pm Saturday 7 August 2010 Champagnat Centre Black tie or bow tie Featuring Brisbane’s best party band Hot Sauce

Sparkling champagne and top quality wines have been selected and once again the Corona Bar will be in full swing for the convenience of guests. The Marist chefs have something very special up their sleeves for the main meal and top band Hot Sauce is primed and ready to go. Thousands of fairy lights and hundreds of tea lights will transform the Champagnat Centre for one very special night of Marist community spirit. This year’s silent auction features seven stunning artworks, a unique theatre and accommodation package, a state-of-the-art DVD player, a top quality sound system, a Bar Italia coffee machine and Seiko Sportura watch. We also have a range of beautiful, handcrafted jewellery including a silver and 18ct gold ring; a silver necklace featuring semi-precious stones; a silver pendant with a South Sea pearl centre; a silver charm bracelet; a silver euro ball and leather necklace and a ‘Sex in the City’ style solid silver neckband with South Sea pearl centre. Our live auctions will feature a magnificent Maristthemed painting by Craig McSwan, an historical, framed photograph of Australia’s 5-0 win over England in the 2006/7 cricket series, diamond jewellery and a 5-star accommodation and entertainment package. Our premier auction item is a set of platinum, diamond and sapphire Marist cufflinks which have been created to celebrate the College’s 70th anniversary. And, back by popular demand, is Marist Moola! It costs $200 per table of 10 to enter for a chance to win $2000, which is drawn on the night. With just over 60 tables in the room, that’s very good odds of making a 1000 per cent profit on a $20 a head outlay! All proceeds from the Ball go towards building the Brother Alexis Turton science centre for our boys, so please be generous on the night.

Feast Day Of Blessed Mary Mackillop

On August 8th, Australians will celebrate the Feast Day of Blessed Mary Mackillop So who was, and is Mary Mackillop? She was female, she was an Australian, she was poor, she was intelligent, she was a teacher, she was a risk taker, she was resourceful, she was optimistic, she was kind. But she is much more than all of those things put together. Her life story is that of a saint. Mary MacKillop’s secret was that she saw things differently. Nothing unpleasant in others blinded her to seeing God in them, to seeing their basic dignity as human beings. When Mary MacKillop founded the institute of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart in 1867 the first order of nuns established by an Australian, her vision was radically different from the traditions of the established orders of nuns from England, Ireland and Europe. The celebration of Mary Mackillop’s life calls us at this time to be people of hope in our broken and fragmented world. It calls us to be people who relive suffering and bring hope in whatever circumstances we find ourselves. The celebration of her feast day challenges each Australian to know God who is with us, to embrace with a compassionate heart those who travel the journey with us and to believe that each person can and does make a difference in our world. Feast of the Assumption

The Assumption of Mary is the day we remember the ascension, the going up of Mary, body and soul to heaven. The belief of people ascending into heaven is part of both Jewish and Christian tradition. At the end of her earthly life the Blessed Virgin Mary was taken up to heaven, body and soul, by the power of the Spirit. She now enjoys the resurrection life at the heart of the Holy Trinity, which Jesus invites us all to share. For as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ (1Cor 15:22). The three day retreats took place at five sites in and around Brisbane. The retreats gave our young men a rare chance to live, work, share, reflect and pray in a supportive environment and they responded magnificently to the challenge. A range of large group input sessions combined with small group discussion and sharing, and importantly, liturgical and prayer experiences enabled boys to reflect on the story of their life in all its richness and to think seriously about themselves and their futures. Lots of quiet time, good humour, much affirmation and enjoyment in the company of peers and teachers characterized each of this year’s retreats. At Marist College we are truly blessed to have a staff where 30 teachers willingly and voluntarily worked with students on retreat and a group of Year 12 boys who entered into the experience with such good will and interest. Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2010

From the Archives Continued... Hello to you all again. We left our tale with the College in the happy position of having run two extremely successful Art Unions, the end result of which was that building of a new classroom block could proceed almost immediately. Brother Peter Carrick, the hero of the hour as the instigator of the Art Union concept, was plotting further fund-raising, while Director Brother Ferrer Robinson was relieved that Peter’s brainchild had worked so well – without the new building, education at Ashgrove would be in dire straits. All seemed to be set fair……. As we have often remarked, however, little in human affairs is ever simple or straightforward. The project began in November, 1956, with the sinking of the foundations for the new building. As was his custom, the Archbishop of the Diocese, James Duhig, was driven on periodic tours of his territory, often appearing unexpectedly to check on various locations. Such a visit saw him arrive on the College campus in mid-November 1956. The busy construction worksite that confronted him aroused mixed emotions in the Archbishop – perplexity and indignation. When, he thundered in a letter to the Marist Provincial, Brother Hilary, had he given permission for a new building to proceed? Why hadn’t he been consulted, and what was this building anyway? Where were the plans? Why did the Marist Brothers think they could do this without his approval? The new building, in short, represented “….a breach of trust (and) a grave discourtesy to myself and my office.” Faced with such condemnation, Brother Hilary sent a conciliatory reply. No rudeness had been deliberately intended – it was a mere oversight; the project involved great planning and bustle. Of course His Grace could have a copy of the plans – they would be sent forthwith. Hilary remained “Yours dutifully.” What Hilary did NOT say, as Mark Farrelly points out, was that the building would be halted until the Archbishop had given his approval to the plans…….it was a clash of wills between a prince of the Church and the leader of an Order which was keen to maintain its independence, and neither was happy. This became particularly obvious when the new building’s foundation stone was to be blessed on 28th July, 1957: Duhig, of course, was to officiate. There is an absolutely hilarious photograph of the Archbishop and Hilary sitting side by side at the ceremony on page 164 of “Canvas of Dreams” – they are about half a metre apart, and each is studiously ignoring the other!!!The tension in the atmosphere is obvious, and the worried looks on some of the other religious personages in the photo seem to suggest that fisticuffs are not impossible…… Nothing, however, not even the Archbishop’s pique, could detract from the significance of the occasion on 13th April, 1958, the opening ceremony for the new classroom block. This was the first major construction in the College’s history, and had been achieved largely through self-help and communal effort: this was a characteristic that would echo down the years to come, and would be repeated many times. The College now had a three storey building of brick, housing classrooms that would alleviate the infrastructure problem (for the immediate future at least). Generations of boys would be, and still are, educated in what became known as, in honour of its chief architect, the Carrick Wing. Other notable things happened on Brother Ferrer Robinson’s watch. Legal steps were taken (successfully) to ensure the College’s possession of additional land along Enoggera Creek in the area of “The Flats”; Ashgrove tried again (and again unsuccessfully) to join the GPS Association; the MSSSA sporting competition collapsed, and was replaced in 1956 by a new competition, The Associated Schools (TAS). Of greatest significance, however, the old school motto Poseurunt Me Custodem (officially “They have appointed me Guardian”; unofficial schoolboy translation “They have placed me in custody”) was altered to the present Viriliter Age (Act manfully or Act courageously) in 1958. Brother Ferrer’s time was drawing to a close in 1958. As previously mentioned, Mark Farrelly in “Canvas of Dreams” is not particularly kind in discussing this period of the College’s history. I hope my scribblings have produced a counter-balance in the minds of readers (if there are any!!!) Ferrer was most definitely NOT a failure. In his time, the school grew to the point where population exceeded infrastructure; in his time, the problem was solved. It was solved through imagination, effort, and communal involvement. It was solved because Ferrer was wise enough to allow Peter Carrick’s genius full rein. It was solved because he was a good, honest, fair and religious man doing his best for his school and his students. He doubted his own abilities when he shouldn’t have. To me, the saddest, most poignant moment in “Canvas of Dreams” occurs when Ferrer goes to Peter Carrick and pleads with him that there be no formal farewell at the termination of his Directorship. Peter rejoins that this is nonsense, and he has to have a send-off. “But no one will come,” Ferrer says sadly. (Peter, of course, made sure that EVERYBODY came.) Vale, Brother Ferrer Robinson, Director of St Mary’s College Ashgrove from 1953 to 1958. You were like most of us, and you were better than you knew. Screaming Jelly Babies??!!

That’s what the signs said! Last Wednesday, 28th July, a large number of Secondary students made their way to Room 401. I’d like to think that they were coming to save the Jelly Babies, but I didn’t actually see any of that. They were however, treated to an interesting display, where Oliver Lane-Porter (Yr 11E) melted Potassium Chlorate in a test tube. He then dropped the jelly baby into the test tube which produced the scream (the potassium chlorate mixes with the glucose releasing energy) and a rather unpleasant smell! This was certainly an interesting and engaging way to kick off the Marist College Ashgrove Science Club.

Reviews of Extension & Extra-Curricula Opportunities It’s been a very busy year so far with a number of excursions, seminars, competitions and camps offered to our students. Below is a selection of the Science related events. Reports of other activities will follow in upcoming Newsletters. Majella Stevens SCIENCE IQ QUIZ - YEAR 7 In Term 2, two teams of Year 7 students competed in an online Science Quiz run by the Science Teachers of WA. A total of 87 teams participated and our students equipped themselves very well. ‘The US Team’, made up of Zac Neville, Tom Downs, Reilly Lundin and Ben Geyer placed 13th, scoring 23 points, just three behind the winners on 26. Not far away, with 21 points, in 28th position, was ‘The ME Team’ – Patrick Harkin, Nicholas Goh, Liam Coulson and Max Hewett. Both teams competed really well and I believe they all enjoyed the experience. Congratulations to all boys involved. BIOFUTURES During the June/July holidays, students took the opportunity to attend a camp offered to Year 11 & 12 students. BioFutures, is a week long residential forum for students in their final two years of high school from Australia and NZ held annually in Brisbane during July. It allows students to explore cutting edge technologies and apply these technologies to national and global challenges. With “hands on” lab visits and face-to-face contact with some of the biotechnology industry’s leading research and commercial organizations, BioFutures paves the way for the next generation of excellence in biotechnology, bio-engineering and biomedicine. Three Year 11 students from Marist College Ashgrove attended the forum this year. These boys, Jack Brown, Garrick Cash and Jack Downes, had an ‘awesome time’ and were made aware of many options that are available to them when they finish Year 12. Jack Downes was generous enough to prepare a brief report on the experience and it will follow this wrap up of events. Students in Years 11 and 12 are advised of this opportunity each year and details of the forum are generally available in April. FORENSIC SCIENCE CAMP Some of our Year 9 students braved the freezing weather of Armidale (I believe it was -10° at 7.30 in the morning!) to become Forensic Scientists. The Forensic Science Camp is a five day camp held at The Armidale School where students have the opportunity to solve a very realistic ‘who dunnit’ mystery. We had three students who participated this year – Brendan Greenham, Joshua Gaultand and Robbie Quinlan. They all came back raving about the experience, with many stories to share and memories of a wonderful week. Brendan volunteered to give us his account of the camp and it can be read below. Each year, the students who participate, are invited to apply for the opportunity to return the following year to act as ‘controllers’ for the new batch of sleuths. Sam Bentley, Year 10, jumped at this opportunity and worked very hard for around eleven months to prepare a scenario for the new campers to investigate. He found that it was a very rewarding and worthwhile experience. I know all of these boys would recommend this camp to any student in Year 9. Having spoken with many of the students who have attended in the past, I strongly recommend it to all, and encourage students to return the following year as the ‘controllers’. It is well organized, challenging and thoroughly enjoyable event. AUSTRALIAN BRAIN BEE CHALLENGE For the past few years, we have had students participate in the Australian Brain Bee Challenge. At the end of Year 9, students who volunteer for this challenge receive a copy of the book Neuroscience – Science of the Brain. This book covers everything from the intricate make-up of the brain to the diseases that attack the brain and the various functions controlled by the brain. The boys need to learn all of this over the Christmas holidays so that in Term 1 of Year 10 they can participate in an online quiz. The questions for this quiz are taken from the book and are randomly generated so that no two students answer the same set of questions. From the results of this quiz, students are selected to participate in the State Final, which, this year, was held in July. There was great interest in the challenge for 2010 with thirteen students nominating for Round 1 – Nicholas Laracy, Sam Geraghty, Nick Sale, Dominic Jones, Darcy Meehan, Minh Pham, Riley Wilkes, Terry Phelan, Matthew Gatty, Joseph Coughlan, Nathan D’Addio, Sam Arnold and Michael Wing. The boys worked hard to learn as much of the information as they could and participated well in the quiz. However, Nick Sale was the only student who was selected to proceed to the State Final on 29th July. Nick had to study a new book – Brain Facts - for the Final. He spent the day at UQ competing in the competition and visiting a variety of labs and other areas of the Queensland Brain Institute. His hard work almost paid off as he only missed out on the final by two points – a fantastic effort. I would like to congratulate all of the students of their effort and thank them for their participation.

Biofutures

2010

From the 4th to the 10th of July, three Marist students attended Biofutures 2010, a camp dedicated to presenting attendees with hands-on experience in the fields of science. Hosted at the University of Queensland St. Lucia Campus’ Women’s College, students lived on-campus at UQ for a week, attending lectures from many people in cutting-edge scientific fields, and getting hands-on in the laboratories. The camp took students to two other leading universities in the Brisbane area: the Queensland University of Technology Kelvin Grove Campus and Griffith University Nathan Campus. While giving students access to many facets of each university in the Brisbane area, in my opinion, the greatest part about Biofutures was hearing how many of our lectures actually got to where they were in life. While giving us great insight into their occupations and everyday life, hearing exactly what they studied and how they got to where they are today was amazing. So too was exploring the amount of options and opportunities that each university had to offer. It was a camp that really opened our eyes to everything that could be done after school. Of course, the camp had plenty to offer in the fields of science. I myself attended the Griffith University Institute for Genealogy, which was a tour of Griffith’s newly established institute. Our group was able to explore how Relenza (the drug that was the forerunner to Tamiflu) was created. I was also able to attend the Royal Brisbane Hospital’s Skills Development Centre. At the SDC, we were placed in a simulated surgery, complete with a realistic dummy (our car-crash victim), tools, and blood. Also on hand were virtual reality machines for keyhole surgery training, and a short CPR course. Other students attended QUT’s Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, and UQ’s SPARQ-ed, at the Diamantina Institute. All in all, the camp provided deep insight into the many facets of College life, and the opportunities that one can have at university. It definitely opened my eyes to a variety of options, and I would recommend the experience to any Year 11 or 12 student. Jack Downes 11F Forensic Science Camp 2010 Review The 2010 forensic science camp was a fantastic experience for me. It gave me an opportunity to do so many things that I would probably never have had the chance to do otherwise. Right from the beginning, getting on that bus early Tuesday morning, you could feel the excitement in the air. We had no idea what surprises the next few days would have in store for us. As soon as we arrived we got straight into it. We were put into our Crime Task Force (CTF), allocated our controllers and taken to our rooms where we would spend most of the next four days trying to work out who the culprit was. We were given our scenarios and had to start working straight away. Until Friday our lives were consumed with trying to bust the culprit. We were given pieces of evidence that we had to test for different things such as Ph levels and fingerprint dusting. In the end we worked it out and got an arrest warrant. Saturday was the day of the court cases and I was pretty nervous. However in the end it didn’t matter if we got a conviction or not; what mattered was that we all had a great experience that we will never forget. Brendan Greenham 9D

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS Junior School News Dear Parents, Staff and Boys, It’s good to be back with you all and I am very grateful to the Junior School Staff for ensuring the boys had a smooth and good start to the new term. It was also good to greet the boys at Assembly on Monday 26 July and to welcome them all back to school for Term 3. The month of August is an important month for the Marist Brothers as it contains their major Feast Day – The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin into Heaven, which is celebrated on 15 August. Over the centuries, artists have painted the Assumption of Mary, based on the words from the Book of Revelation: “Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman adorned with the sun, standing on the moon, and with the twelve stars on her head for a crown.” (Revelation 12:1) This scene does not refer to Mary, but has been used for centuries as an acknowledgement of Mary of Nazareth who was shown great favour by God for her role in the salvation of humankind. This type of image and language may not capture or inspire many of us today, but it should speak to us, as every Feast of Mary should, that as a Christian and a follower of the teachings of Jesus Christ, listening and responding to the Word of God is what we are called to. Mary is a perfect example of this requirement or challenge. I conclude this short Reflection with this prayer for the Feast of the Assumption: Mary, our Mother, your total giving of yourself reminds us that we hold in trust, from God our Father, all our accomplishments, talents and gifts. We are trusted to offer them in his service to bring happiness and well-being to those around us. Your ‘Yes’ to God’s invitation to be the mother of his Son reminds us that prayer is not just word, but is from the heart. We ask that the Holy Spirit may live fully in us, too, so that we may be prepared to join you in saying ‘Yes’ to God and that Jesus may be born within our hearts each day. At this special time, let us remember to pray for all the Marist Brothers throughout the world, but especially the Brothers who are on the Staff at Marist College Ashgrove – Brother Adrian Story, Brother Kevin Ryan, Brother Mark Fordyce and Brother Dominic O’Sullivan. We also pray for the Marist Brothers’ community here at Marist College Ashgrove.

Bastille Day celebrations: Friday 30 July As I write these few lines to you, Madame has her Year 10 students helping to decorate the Junior School courtyard for our Bastille Day celebrations. The courtyard is filled with white, blue and red. This is always a very enjoyable day and we will have some photographs of the day, taken by Mr Oostenbroek, to share with you. I wish to thank Madame for all the work and enthusiasm that went into this great day. Many weeks of preparation have gone into this celebration and the Staff is thanked for their support and the boys for becoming so involved. The boys loved it and Madame’s energy and vitality rubs off on the boys and they all become so involved.

Junior School Sports News JUNIOR SCHOOL SPORT C.I.C. Athletics 2010 The 2010 C.I.C. Athletics season has been under way now for four weeks, with the lead-up carnivals being held at University of Queensland. It is always a busy morning for all at these lead-up carnivals, so if there are any parents who are able to assist with Ashgrove timekeeping or officiating it would be greatly appreciated if you could make your availability known to Krishna Stanton or Luke Caplick. A full copy of the Athletics Handbook has been handed out to those boys who have been attending training. If you have not yet received a copy and wish to do so it can be accessed through the College website or the boys can collect them from the Sports Shelf in the Junior School Library. On Tuesday 10 August the Junior School will be conducting its Colour Athletics Carnival. The day is about having all Junior School students involved in all events except those that are outlined to be championship events. North-West District Athletics On July 21 & 22 the North-West District Track & Field Championships were held at Hilder Rd State School. We had some outstanding efforts from all our boys over these two days with 12 boys going on to represent the North-West district at the Regional trials to be held at Nudgee College on Aug 24 & 25. Our high jumpers in particular performed exceptionally well with James Graham and Izaac Ellings winning their respective age groups with James jumping 1.35m in U/11 and Izaac clearing 1.43m in U/12. Dylan Strelow also won the U/12 long jump with a jump of 4.38m and Campbell Mowle placed fourth in the U/10 to progress through to the regionals. Campbell will be a busy boy at the regional trials held at Nudgee, as he will compete in 100m, 200m, 800m and long jump, which is an enormous achievement. Our shot put team also did extremely well with Ryley French (U/13), Joey Gilmour (U/10), Tom Rafter (U/11) and Jack Cuneo (U/12) all placing 2nd in their respective age groups. Other boys who gained selection and worth noting for their great performances were: Nick Houlahan and James Ellings in the 800m, Tom Carroll in discus and Jackson Courtney in the 200m. Well done to all the boys who represented the College at these Championships and we wish the boys who were mentioned above all the best at the Regional trials in a few weeks time.

C.I.C. Basketball 2010 The 2010 C.I.C. Basketball season has just begun and Ashgrove has had some great games. The most pleasing part of the Basketball season began when we had over 150 boys trial for three teams in each year level. Unfortunately, with the Friday afternoon timeslot and the amount of resources the College is able to provide we can only accommodate three teams in each age group. It would be ideal if we could offer more teams, however logistics don’t allow us too. It’s great to see so many boys prepared to “have a go” at a new sport to further enhance their co-ordination skills. Not only are the Junior School boys being active and enjoying another team sport, as well, through Basketball, they are learning a new skills set to enhance their overall co-ordination ability. The 2010 season draw for Basketball can be found on the College website.

CROSS COUNTRY

CROSS COUNTRY‐AIC CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010 After an excellent season, an historic third consecutive AIC title looked a distinct possibility. The team had come together as a strong, united squad, fostered by the

leadership of the Senior group. The nature of sport often means that things don’t go totally according to plan and this was certainly the case on AIC day. Over the last couple of years, the depth of talented runners across all schools has continued to increase. This was evident from the first event of the carnival and this trend continued throughout the rest of the meet. Despite a valiant attempt to rise to the challenge, the team could not match the better‐performed teams on the day, Iona College and worthy, first‐time AIC Champions‐ St Patrick’s College. Congratulations to both of these schools but in particular to St Patrick’s for their tremendous effort in claiming their first title. Some excellent performances were recorded by the Marist College team to claim third place. Despite some disappointment at not retaining the title, the team stood as one and applauded the victorious St Patrick’s team as they collected the shield. The qualities of sportsmanship they had shown when victorious were equally on display in defeat; to say I was immensely proud of them is an understatement! Seb Fahey led the way for the U13’s finishing a courageous 2nd, followed closely by Josh Collins in 5thplace. The U13 team, on their trial form, would be disappointed with their overall 4th place finish ‐ plenty of motivation for 2011!! Sam Trundle was first runner home in the U14 race finishing a creditable 7th followed by brave runs from Michael Cristiano and Will Darwin. The U14 team finished in 5th place, well down on their 1st place from 2009. With the large number of boys involved in this age group I’m sure they will improve next year. Max Neumann continued his good form from the State Titles and finished a close second with the improving Lincoln Farmer (12th) and the tenacious Mitch Burgin close behind. The boys had looked a strong chance to win their Age group but with the improved competition the U15’s finished 3rd overall. Our best result of the day came with Liam Woollet easily winning the U16 race. Liam was eligible for the U15 race but to help the team, agreed to run in the older Age group. The spirit of the whole team was lifted with his authoritative victory. He was ably supported by Tom Campbell (9th) and Declan Morris (20th). In a very competitive age group the under 16 team finished in 4th place. The Open team had the best season of preparation since they came together in 2006 but injury and sickness on the day hindered their chance of a best‐ever result. Despite this, the Senior group ran courageously with Alex Milliken (17th) our first Open runner home followed closely by Rob Aston, Stephen Cannon and Dom Cumming. It was great to see Dom make it to the starting line after bad luck in the previous two years. Except for a dominant Villanova team,

the Opens finished 4th in a close tussle with St Patrick’s and Iona. Full results of all races are available on the College website, on the Secondary Cross Country page. In finishing third, the entire squad experienced firsthand that the standard of the AIC Cross Country competition has improved markedly over the last few years. This will provide plenty of motivation, for the Marist College Ashgrove team to rise to the challenge next season ‐ one I know that all of the boys are looking forward to.
