From the Headmaster Dear Members of the Marist College Community, I read an article recently that was written by Fr Daniel O’Leary. It was published in a magazine entitled, “The Tablet”, the International Catholic Weekly magazine. The article was called, “Threshold of the Soul”. Fr Daniel talked about how we often get too caught up in the business of everyday life and lose sight of what joys exist around us. He wrote of a man at a Metro station in Washington DC who started to play the violin on a cold January morning. He played for forty five minutes and it was estimated that thousands of people went past him - it was rush hour. Very few people stopped. A middle aged man stopped for a few seconds and then went on his way. A lady put $1 in his violin case but didn’t stop to listen. The one who paid the most attention was a three year old boy. His mother tried to hurry him along but the boy stopped in front of the violinist. The little boy was dragged away but kept looking back. Only six people actually stopped. When he finished, no one recognized his performance. The violinist was Joshua Bell, recognized as one of the world’s finest violinists. The violin he used was worth US $3.5million and he played some of the most intricate pieces. Fr Daniel wrote: ‘The event was organised by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and the priorities of people. The inherent questions were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognise talent in an unexpected context? One of the possible conclusions to be drawn from this bit of research might be put in another question: if we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing in the course of our normal day? Do we forget that our senses are “the threshold of our soul”? “Listen, my child,” St Benedict wrote at the beginning of his Rule, “with the ear of your heart”.’ The article goes on to illustrate other examples of how it seems that the wisdom of the young are teaching us to take the time to listen to the Joshua Bells that are sometimes playing in the most unlikely of venues. We just have to be open to the opportunity to slow down and listen. In the poem “Now I Become Myself” May Sarton writes, O, in this single hour I live All of myself and do not move I, the pursued, who madly ran, Stand still, stand still and stop the sun! Headmaster’s Notes Congratulations • Nathan Bassani 10F, who recently completed a very successful work experience at Parliament House Canberra in the Office of Senator Chris Evans, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship. • Jed Brisbane 11G, Ed Donaldson 11H, Dominic Smith 11I, and Ben Stubbings 11I who participated in the Immersion experience to Yangoru in PNG from 23 June to July 3. Special thanks to Mr Tim Kenny and Mrs Paula McLoughlin who accompanied the boys on the experience. • To twenty six members of our Cross Country team who travelled to Sydney for their camp during the holidays. Br John Moran We received news this morning that Brother John Moran passed away last night at Campbelltown. He had been a member of the Ashgrove Brothers Community for many years and only recently decided to move to Sydney. However his health, which had been poor for some time, deteriorated rapidly following the move. “Eternal rest grant to Brother John O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him forever. May he rest in peace. Amen.”

Fr Tom MAloney Thanks to Mr Corboy, Mr Baldwin and Mr Lawson who accompanied thirty five or our Year 12 boys to Fr Tom Maloney’s funeral in Lismore last Tuesday. Fr Tom Maloney passed away on 6th July at 10.30pm in St Joseph’s nursing home in Lismore aged 89 years. His funeral was held on Tuesday 13th July at 1.30pm at St Carthage’s Cathedral in Lismore and he was buried at Goonellabah Lawn Cemetery after the funeral. Fr Tom had a long association with the Marist Brothers and was affiliated to the Sydney province. Fr Tom was Chaplain at our College for seventeen years. The following quotes are from Br Christopher Wade's tribute to Fr Tom in the 1987 Blue and Gold: “In Father Tom we see exemplified in many ways the kind of priest that Father Colin wishes to give to the Church when he founded the Marist Fathers - a priest who would win people by goodness and tenderness, who would excuse the failings of people, who would blend in and become part of the local Church, who would work hard and be without airs and graces, who would take any and every opportunity to do good......Tom's faith is real, genuine and boundless. He loves the Church and its Sacraments and rituals.......Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Tom's ministry though, is his devotion to the sick, dying and the deceased and this has been quite an extraordinary part of his ministry......We Brothers count ourselves especially fortunate to have Tom live with us, not as a stranger but as an integral part of our community these past 17 years.......He is a character. A storyteller. A conversationalist. A confidante. A sports coach. A traveller. He manages to combine the prudence of the dove with the cunning of the serpent - especially when it's a question of advancing Ashgrove and downing a certain other school.......There was sadness at leaving, but also recognition that the time was ripe, and happiness at the prospect of retiring in familiar surroundings.....a tribute to a good priest who became a byword in the continuing story that is Ashgrove." The theme for this year’s celebrations is: Called to be stewards of a sustainable future. As a Catholic community we are called to be stewards of a sustainable future: to celebrate the splendour of God’s creation; to commit to protect and sustain it; to appreciate and cultivate it; and to take action today to shape its future. This year’s theme recognises these responsibilities. The theme was also chosen to share in the Year of Environmental Sustainability declared for all Queensland schools in 2010 by the Minister for Education and Training, the Hon. Geoff Wilson. Catholic Education Week in Queensland is an opportunity for all Catholic schools to celebrate our distinctive mission and share the things that are special about our schools and ethos with families, parish and the wider community. In 2010, there are 288 Catholic (195 primary, 67 secondary and 26 P–12) schools in Queensland educating 132,000 or about 18% of all students and comprising about 60 per cent of students in non-government schools in the state. There is more than 15,000 staff in Queensland Catholic schools with over 8,000 teaching staff. We have a framed Matthew Hayden ‘Ashes Whitewash’ photograph which has been left blank for Matthew to sign and include a message requested by the successful bidder. The 2006-7 Summer drubbing of the English 5-0 by Ricky Ponting’s Australians is permanently etched in cricketing history. A feat achieved only once before and possibly never again, Marist old boy Hayden proved the lynchpin of that famous side during their last Summer together. We also have two pieces of exquisite pieces of jewellery for auction through the generosity of Marist parents Craig and Andrea McKim of McKim’s Jewellery Design. For the ladies, award-winning designer Craig has handcrafted a pair of 18 ct white gold hoops (pictured) set with brilliant cut diamonds (G si 68 = 0.52cts). For the men, Craig has designed a pair of platinum and 18ct white gold cufflinks set with Australian sapphires in Marist blue and gold colours with white diamonds (pictured). ‘College motto Viriliter Age 1940 – 2010’ has been engraved on the cufflinks, making them a collector’s to celebrate Marist’s 70 year platinum anniversary. Marist parent and celebrated artist Craig McSwan has created a one-off painting (pictured), featuring that enduring symbol of Marist College Ashgrove, the Tower Block. Whether you believe those haunted Tower stories or not, make sure you’re organised to bid if you want to take home this one-of-a-kind painting. All money raised from the Ball goes towards the new $10 million science centre currently under construction, so please be generous on the night.

LEARNING ENRICHMENT CENTRE Another busy term has begun. I would like to give a warm welcome back to Mr. Mark Deegan who is teaching Modules in English for Years 8, 9 and 10. Mark works at Marist College Ashgrove during the second semester of each year. We are very fortunate to welcome Mrs. Bernadette Byrne to the Learning Enrichment Staff for two days each week. Berny will be working in the Junior School. Tutoring “Before School” tutoring is available from 8.00a.m. in the L.E.C. 1 classroom with the following subjects “on offer”:MATHEMATICS… Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday ENGLISH, ASSIGNMENTS, ORGANISATION…. Monday through to Friday. This is a “drop in” service and the students must sign-in and sign-out. The L.E.C. is often open at 7.15a.m. so that students my work independently on homework or on assignments. If you wish for further information, please do not hesitate to ring on (07)3858-4669. Jan Mulvihill Head of Learning Enrichment Global Young Leaders Conference (Nicholas and James Rigby) We arrived in Washington D.C on Sunday the 27th of June to meet our fellow scholars and friends for the next 12 days. After the organisers introduced themselves and the intensive program of the conference, we were allocated into our groups with which we would partake in the various simulations and activities to follow. The second day brought the first of a multitude of fantastic speakers, ranging from a 24 year old, Cheryl Perera, who began her own aid organisation at the age of 16, to Dr. Gary Weaver, Professor from the School of International Service, who spoke on Cross-Cultural Communication. After developing an understanding of the skills required of leadership, and the various roles leaders take in the world, we began preparations for the first of the three simulations which would play an integral role during the conference. This was ‘Politics of Trade’, a simulation of the workings of the World Trade Organisation, which produced some very interesting debate. This and the U.N. Security Council simulation allowed us to understand the difficulties faced by diplomats when trying to reach a successful agreement, and helped to show the multitude of different viewpoints in the world on important issues. While in Washington we visited important institutions, including the State Department, embassies and the Smithsonian Institute, and various monuments of significance. On the seventh day of the conference we began our travel to New York, stopping in Philadelphia’s Historic District, the birthplace of U.S. democracy, for lunch. Our first full day in New York City was a cultural experience, sightseeing and even visiting Broadway for Mary Poppins the musical. On the second last day of our stay at Manhattan College, we left to visit the U.N. (a day after the Queen) for the final simulation: the Global Summit at the U.N. General Assembly. After days of preparation we reached this, the culmination of the conference, where everything came together as all 405 scholars participated in debate on 8 resolutions, all of which ended up being adopted by our mock U.N. Assembly. This was followed by the dinner/dance cruise on the Hudson River, which was of course great fun, before we all went our separate ways to begin long journeys home the next day. Overall the trip was a highly worthwhile experience, and we would recommend it to anyone lucky enough to be invited in the future.

We see your infinite power and love in: beautiful mountains, thundering waterfalls, a simple flower. We also witness in nature the awesome wonder of everyday life. In the birth of a child, the love of a mother, father, and friend, the comforting and supporting spirit of a community. Vivid: WYD Launch is the official launch of the Archdiocese’s preparations for World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid, Spain. Mission and Ministry News Continued... Immersion preparation weekend, Tugun, 16,17,18 July This year’s immersion group to Santa Teresa undertook their preparation last weekend at Tugun. The Year 11 students who make up the group are Martin Busby, Myles Darwin, Ben Emmott, Ken Lopez Loo, Zack O’Brien, William Redmond and Tim Tracey. Ms Katy Ward, Mr Luke Mcmahon and Brother Mark will accompany the group from the 7th – 14th August.
Papua New Guinea Solidarity Immersion
The PNG Immersion group returned on Saturday 3rd of July after 10 days of living in the community at Yangoru, a village 45 kilometres inland from Wewak in the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea. The whole experience was an incredible journey into a very different culture and an extraordinary way of life. People welcomed us with real hospitality going out of their way to make sure that we were looked after. The Yangoru community was extremely generous in giving us a huge variety of food from their own gardens as a sign of their welcome to us. Every day more and more organic fruit and vegetables arrived on the Brothers’ steps to help make our stay more enjoyable. The occasional Betel nut was also included in the cache of goodies. Mrs Paula McLoughlin, through her role at Marist Asia Pacific Solidarity (MAPS), was involved in helping to run a sewing skills and personal development program for the young men and women of the Yangoru Parish Youth. The group have begun a project where they will sew shorts, skirts and t‐shirts which will be used as uniforms by the students of St Thomas’ school. Paula shared her sewing skills as well as her incredible wisdom about life with the young people of Yangoru and the young people were extremely grateful to Paula for her generosity and openness with them. The Brothers were incredibly hospitable to us, making space in their house and going out of their way to make our stay with their community a truly memorable time. The Brothers community at Yangoru is currently made up of Br Max (originally from the Solomon Islands) and Brs Cornelius and Rodney (both from Bougainville). These men made us feel welcome and encouraged us to see their home as our own. They truly epitomised the Marist virtue of Hospitality. The local children quickly overcame their shyness and welcomed our boys with open arms and our boys ultimately became ‘the kings of the kids’. Yangoru is built on the banks of a shallow river which is an essential part of everyday life as a steady water supply for washing, a source of sand for building and as a place of respite from the daytime heat. The local kids have also turned it into the ultimate natural play area, with overhanging trees for shade and branches for jumping and sliding. The Ashgrove boys became fixtures in the river in the early afternoon and steadily became a source of real joy for the little kids as they laughed at us and with us as we settled into life in the Sepik. Another essential element of life in Yangoru is soccer and it was obvious from the first day that Yangoru soccer skills are very highly developed and that people are willing to play for hours. The next immersion to Yangoru should include representatives of the College’s First XI team needing to develop their skills. Overall the experience challenged us all to go outside our comfort zones. We were definitely called to look at the world with the ‘Eyes of a Child’ as Br Sean Sammon fms, former superior general of the Brothers, challenged all Marists to do. 2010 Social Justice Sunday
We celebrate Social Justice Sunday on 26th September. This year’s Social Justice Sunday Statement is titled: “Violence in Australia: A message of Peace”. The statement considers how the Christian values of forgiveness and reconciliation lead to peace and non‐violent ways of addressing conflict and divisions. The bishops highlight the role we all share in making a difference for peace as individuals, as a community and as a nation. Semester Two Commencement Year Liturgies
On Tuesday and Wednesday last week each Year group in the senior school participated in a Commencement Liturgy to begin the new school semester which was held in the College Chapel. Father Jim Hargrave chose a parable from Matthew’s Gospel and he took the opportunity throughout the Liturgies to remind all of the students of their gifts and talents and the commitment required by them to continue to achieve their best this semester. Mr. McLoughlin also addressed each year group at the conclusion of each Liturgy.
Year 12 Retreats
All Year 12 students and 30 College staff will be attending a retreat at five different sites from July 21‐23. The sites are James Byrne Centre Toowoomba, Glendalough Outdoor Centre at Peregian, Lake Perseverance at Crows Nest, Camp Duckadang near Linville and the QCCC camp at Brookfield. Groups of 50 students and 6 staff will spend three days in reflection, discussion and sharing at each site. Psalm 139 gives a sense of what our aim in retreat will be – “Lord, behind and before you encircle me and rest your hand upon me…….”. The retreat involves a combination of large group and small group input and discussion, prayer and liturgy experiences and recreation time. At this stage of term the days away promise to be a gentle time before the busyness of assessment and QCST towards the end of term. Boys will be encouraged to treasure the quiet time together with their peers and teachers. As it has been for so many before them we hope that this important component of their education at Marist will be a wonderful affirmation of boys in themselves and their faith.

Always engaging, Br Tony put before boys a few challenges which they responded to thoughtfully. Br Tony will return later in the term to speak with Senior students on the same topics.
SONY CAMP 2010 The Sony Foundation Marist Children’s Holiday Camp will be held at the College from Friday 17 to Monday 20 September. This annual camp, our eighth, will involve up to 30 children with disabilities being companioned by Year 12 students, boys from Ashgrove and girls from Mt Alvernia College. In order to prepare for this year’s camp we are seeking support from the College community by way of: Volunteer nurses (contact Sr Jane O’Shea in the Health Centre 3858 4618) Sweets, party supplies Donations Please contact Luke McMahon (mcmahonl@marash.qld.edu.au) if you can make a contribution to this year’s camp. Year 12 students have been invited to apply in writing for a place as a companion. These applications are due to Richard Ward by Wednesday of week three, 28 August. Sony Camp is a wonderful experience each year, for the children certainly, but especially for the Year 12 students and College staff who have the privilege of working with and for the children and their families.
SANTA TERESA IMMERSION GROUP PREPARATION Over the weekend, the Santa Teresa Immersion group of Martin Busby, Myles Darwin, Ben Emmott, Ken Lopez Loo, Zack O’Brien, William Redmond, Tim Tracey, Ms Katy Ward, Mr Luke McMahon and Brother Mark took the opportunity of travelling to the brother’s holiday house in Tugan, so we could prepare for our upcoming pilgrimage. The purpose of our two-night stay was to learn about ourselves and the group, to form relationships with the boys and teachers who we may not have known so well, and to prepare and learn about some of the experiences and challenges we will face during our week at Santa Teresa. We did this through prayer, honest discussion, a little soccer, consecutive movie nights, and a Master Chef experience. Daniel Quill and Jordie Ellis, two of last year’s pilgrims, also made the journey down so they could share their valuable insight and stories about what we should expect, and how they themselves dealt with it. The Immersion will leave on the 7th of August and return on the 14th. We are certainly looking forward to the experience. Myles Darwin

From the Deputy Head of School - Teaching and Learning QCST Retrospective The 2009 Queensland Core Skills Test Retrospective is now available for your perusal in the Resource Centre and this resource is not available for borrowing. All past QCST Retrospectives are held in the Resource Centre and can be found on shelves at: Non Fiction 373.126 QUE. 2010 Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test: Approved Calculators The calculator to be used by students is to be hand-held, solar or battery operated, noiseless and not attached to a printer. The calculator should be able to perform basic functions – addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square roots and powers. Graphing calculators (without computer algebra system (CAS) functionality) may be used. Mobile phones are not permitted, students will not be able to use the calculator functions of a mobile phone during the test. No form of personal computer is permitted. Music News Welcome to what promises to be another semester of spirited music making at Marist. Some of the many highlights include the College’s Cathedral Concert at St Stephen’s Cathedral, Marist Jazz Night and the Winds & Percussion Concert. A reminder to all parents that information regarding all music activities for the semester will be given via the Music Calendar, the College Website, (music section), and in the newsletter. It is very important that both parents and students refer each fortnight to this page to keep up to date with events. Boys will be receiving their Music Calendar in the next week. Marist Jazz Night Thursday 29th July, 7pm – Draney Theatre This concert involves all of the College’s Big Bands and Jazz Ensembles as well as special guests the Enthusiastic Musicians Orchestra. E.M.O is a creative outlet for Brisbane musicians, composers, and arrangers. Assembled in July 2008, this band is driven to swing, and swing hard. In performance the orchestra is highly engaging, delivering a program ranging from the masters of the Big Band to stunning new Australian works. A performance from the Enthusiastic Musicians Orchestra leaves the artists and audience alike feeling inspired. P&F News Hard to believe it is already term three isn’t it? Hope you all had a wonderful holiday with your families! AGM-August 2 The AGM offers the opportunity for our Heads of School, P&F President, Treasurer and Sub Committee representatives to report on the “happenings” for the year. It is also when we elect the new executive committee and sub committee representatives. Each year the entire executive – President, Vice- President/s, Secretary, Assistant Secretary and Treasurer ‘stand down” to allow others the opportunity to assume these roles. The committee is elected after nominations have been received from the parent community. Sub-committee positions are also available, although these committee members are not required to “stand down” each year- it is our preference that sub-committee members spend at least two years in the role to assure continuity. So what positions need to be filled this year: • All executive positions • A second convenor for the sports canteen – we desperately need at least one more parent to act as a coordinator for this committee • At least one parent to join the Amity Committee – junior or senior school parents are welcome • Co-ordinators for our Card Day committee, again junior or senior school parents. We hope that you will consider nominating for one of these roles. According to our constitution, nominations need to be received two weeks prior to the AGM, however as our AGM falls earlier this year and you will just have received this newsletter, all nominations will need to re received by MONDAY JULY 26, 7 days before the AGM. From the Archives... Hello to you all again. We left Ashgrove in the hands of Director Brother Ferrer Robinson in the year 1953, with the major problem being the number of students at the College was rapidly outgrowing the infrastructure available. Classes were crowded to the point that they were overflowing onto verandahs, and Ferrer highlighted the problem in his end of year speech in 1953, recognising that it was “imperative that new school buildings be erected to accommodate the 500 boys we shall have in the near future….”. The sticking point, of course, was finance – Ferrer appealed to the Provincial Council in 1954 for help, but the reply was that the College should look to its own devices. Fortunately, the ranks of the Brothers at Ashgrove contained one Brother Peter Carrick, a “big picture” man in the style of the great Ignatius O’Connor, a thinker of “outside the square” ideas, and a “go to” individual for provincials and headmasters wanting to solve problems quickly. Peter was an enthusiastic, happy, gregarious person, revelling in the company of his fellow Brothers, but also the whole school community – students, parents, old boys, and friends: he and the reserved Ferrer were opposites, but Ferrer was wise enough to see that Peter’s solution to the College’s financial problems was a potential winner……. Peter proposed setting up an Art Union to raise the funds for new classrooms. His initial idea was to have a new Holden car as the prize, but as sure as big oaks from little acorns grow, his initial idea was to become as massive as the legendary movie Ben Hur. Given carte blanche by Ferrer, Peter approached an architectural firm to prepare plans for the new building, a classroom block of three stories, and not only that, but a plan for development far into the future. No-one could ever accuse Peter of thinking small!!! Next, the Art Union itself, and here Peter acknowledged a self-failing: Big Dreams delighted him; detail and administrivia bored and frustrated him. If the Art Union was to be run well, he wasn’t the man to do it…..but help was at hand. We remarked with regard to the right person to solve problems in the last newsletter “Cometh the hour, cometh the man.” In this case it was to be “Cometh the Art Union, cometh the volunteer mother.” Mrs Nancy O’Connor, mother of two students, became the saviour of Peter’s great idea: she did all the tedious background work for four years – sorting, counting, typing and printing. Mark Farrelly tells us that Peter himself acknowledged that the whole project would have collapsed without Nancy’s remarkable and selfless efforts. So Peter’s brainchild now had an efficient workforce…..what was needed was a really attractive prize beyond just a car, and here again fate took a hand. One of the Brothers at Eagle Heights, Hyacinth Hayes, had become friendly with a Gold Coast retiree named Col Mulvey. Col owned a block of four flats at Tugun, and invited Hyacinth

From the Archives Continued... to stay there free of charge at holiday times; other Brothers were soon included in the offer from the generous Col, and the gregarious Peter was one of these. He was struck by the attractive location by the sea, and decided to make Col an offer: would he be interested in selling the flats? Coincidentally, Col, a Melbournite originally, had been missing his family, and was thinking of moving back there. The deal suited both of them: Peter now had a prize that everyone would reckon attractive. (Mark Farrelly goes even further, terming it “seductive.”) An attractive brochure was produced displaying the flats, (the first prize), photographic equipment, (the second prize), and portable radios (third to sixth prizes). The Holden car, the original concept as first prize, would now go to the winning ticket seller – a measure of how mighty an oak had grown from the original acorn. A massive advertising campaign, which went interstate to other Marist schools as well, sent the brochure to many places: the drawing date was to be 21st March, 1956. Ferrer, recently returned from a second novitiate trip overseas, made sure that Peter could put all his energies into the Art Union by reducing Peter’s teaching hours – an almost unheard of step in those days. The results were dramatic – and rich. After the drawing of the prizes, the College was nearly 11,000 pounds in profit, an effort which Ferrer judged “more than worthwhile.” Better was to follow: on the principle of striking while the iron was hot, Peter purchased a brick home at Burleigh Heads as the main prize of the next Art Union, with no less than six Holdens as consolation prizes. It was drawn in November, 1956, and recognised the staggering sum of 13,500 pounds for the College coffers. The Art Union funds boosted the College bank balance to much more than was needed to attract a bank loan to allow the new building programme to proceed. It was an example of the “self help” that Cyprian had so prized flowering after he had left the school. A dynamic deputy and a modest self-effacing Director had combined in a unity of purpose which would benefit generations of students to come….proof enough that Ferrer , while no Cyprian, had an admirable solidity to his leadership. And there, with the first brick building to be constructed on the property since the Tower Block in 1931 about to have its foundations laid, we must pause. Adoption Leave for Mrs Alicia Frances: On Tuesday 22 June, Mrs Alicia Frances, her husband Stephen and daughter Olivia left Brisbane to fly to Thailand to collect a little girl, named Kim, whom they have adopted. Alicia will be away from the College for 12 months and I am sure you would join us all in asking God’s blessings on the family at this very special time, but especially on little Kim as she begins her new life with her new family in her new country. Kim is a very fortunate little girl! Welcome to Mrs Bernadette Byrne: I am delighted to inform you that Mrs Bernadette Byrne, who will replace Mrs Frances, will begin teaching in the Junior School from the beginning of Term 3. Bernadette is a very dedicated and experienced Learning Support Teacher and will be with us for 2 days a week – Thursday and Friday. Mrs Elizabeth Lemon, I am pleased to announce, will continue in her present position, but will teach on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. These two ladies, together with Mrs Rhonda Carson and Mrs Lucy Hislop, will form a great team in our Learning Support Department. A very warm welcome to Bernadette! Welcome to a new family in the Junior School: I am delighted to inform you that we have a new student in Year 5 Blue, Jonathan Healy, who comes to us from Mater Dei Primary School. Junior School Sports News JUnIoR SChooL SPoRT CIC RUGBY & SoCCER The C.I.C. Rugby & Soccer seasons concluded last term, with matches against Nudgee College. After another arduous season, there are always so many people who should be acknowledged for their hard work and dedication in helping the Junior School Rugby and Soccer program operate smoothly. I would like to express my thanks and deepest gratitude to the following groups of people: To the coaches, your hard work and dedication to your sport is always so impressive. Many thanks to the Referees; without your involvement the games would not take place. These people include: Gavin Darwin, Tim Healy, Scott Grinstead, Damien O’Rourke, Adam Nelson, Tony Carmody, Brendan Hayes, Brad Cox, Angus McArthur, Matthew Proelocks, Tom O’Rourke, Peter Moodie and John Carroll. To all the parents who assisted our coaches at training. To all the parents who ran the canteen on the Flats, especially Roberta Bannah. Your efforts were very much appreciated. Thanks to the ground staff, particularly Robert Black, Mike Burton, Craig Anderson, Garry Lawler, Matthew Tarlinton, Fred Suranyi and Alan Kotthoff for assisting in setting up and dismantling the fields on a Saturday. CIC BASKETBALL This Friday will mark the start of the C.I.C. Basketball season with matches against Villanova, the season will last for seven weeks including a week off for the Exhibition break. Ashgrove will field nine teams into the C.I.C. competition with three teams from each year level. Each team will have two Basketball training sessions either before school or during lunch time. Boys should wear non school clothing to these training sessions, except for Wednesday’s where boys may wear their P.E. uniform. A season draw can be obtained from the College website or the Junior School Sports Notice-board.
CIC AThLETICS
The 2010 Athletics season is already upon us and we are faced with the challenge of maintaining our position and competitiveness in the purple division of the C.I.C competition. We hope that all participants train and compete with enthusiasm and pride, and display Marist spirit in striving to be and do the best they can for themselves and their fellow team mates. TRAInInG DAYS Tuesday and Thursday Training times for specialised events will be notified to those boys who qualify for the field events and hurdles training squads TRAInInG TIMES 3.30pm – 4.45pm. The first Carnival will commence this Saturday (24 July) at University of Qld, St Lucia. All carnivals will be held at the UQ St Lucia campus every Saturday except for the EKKA week. The Carnivals commence at 7.45am and are always finished by midday at the latest; boys will be notified of Saturday’s program in the week preceding the event. The Junior School Athletics program aims to give boys of all ability levels the opportunity to enjoy athletics and improve their skills. Athletics has a lot to offer boys in that it fosters skill development, team work, mateship, commitment and determination. The message that we would most like to pass on to all boys who participate in Athletics this year, is that while at carnivals most events entail individual efforts against others, it is a “Team Sport” and if they choose to participate, they must commit to their team and realise that their actions affect the entire team. Non-attendance at training disrupts the preparation of the whole team and is frustrating for coaches. Remember that, to give yourself and therefore the team the best chance of performing well, it is important to commit to regular attendance in order to maximise opportunities of improvement. Competing well at carnivals does not just happen. You must attend training and work hard at your skills and fitness. Prepare for carnivals by eating well and looking after injuries. Train and compete within the rules and display good sportsmanship. Have a go. Perseverance is important. Communicate well with coaches and ask questions. Enjoy being with your friends. Above all, the main purpose of participating is to have fun! We look forward to seeing a team of fine young men doing their best this year. We hope to see you at carnivals and training throughout the season.

Junior School Sport News CIC TEnnIS The 2010 C.I.C Tennis season will commence on 24 July and will finish on the 11 September. The season will last for 8 weeks, with a weekend off for the Exhibition break. Unfortunately this season we have to play our home matches at Whites Tennis Centre, 733 Boston Rd, Chandler. This is due to the construction happening at the College. Matches played at Whites Tennis Centre will commence at 10.00am and conclude by 12.30pm. All other matches played at any other venue will commence at 8.00am and conclude by 11.30am. Games will be scheduled for home and away, so it is up to the individual to find transport to all games. Carpooling may be necessary. Due to the number of teams playing at various locations, parental help would be greatly appreciated. If you are able to help out in anyway, please contact Scott Murphy (Junior School Tennis Co-ordinator), via his email (murphys@marash.qld.edu.au) Again this year a Tennis Cap is available for purchase and use on Saturday mornings. The College requires all players to purchase the new light weight blue mesh cap (Ashgrove embroidery on the front and side), as it will be part of the Saturday morning competition uniform. Free Testing Day – 11 August, 2010 Make the most out of your EKKA Show Day Public Holiday and attend Acceleration Brisbane Central’s second free testing for 2010. Why go to the EKKA and either spend too much money or catch one of the many viruses floating around the showgrounds? Your session will involve measuring basic anthropometric data and then you can choose from a field of testing options. You can choose to either: 1. Test your basic Power parameters – Speed, Agility, Vertical Jump & Overhead Throw 2. Test your basic Strength parameters – 1RM Bench Press/Squat tests 3. Test your basic Aerobic/Anaerobic Conditioning parameters – Beep Test/ Yo‐Yo Test 4. Test your basic Flexibility/Stability parameters.
Organise your team or come in as an individual and select what battery of tests you would like to perform. Our coaches will also be able to lend advice on performance training, nutrition and other factors that you as an athlete or coach may have as a result of the testing protocol.

1st XI Football – Uhlsport Cup The Uhlsport Cup, which features 1st XI teams from the GPS, AIC, TAS, and other independent school associations in Queensland, moves into its finals series during term 3. As Uhlsport Cup champions last season, our 1st XI has once again progressed through to the Round of 16 after winning their group containing John Paul College, Gregory Terrace, and Chisholm College. They will take on Brisbane Grammar School in their Round of 16 match. Please support these boys as they aim to win a second consecutive AIC Premiership / Uhlsport Cup double. Internal trials / training has commenced this week. During week 3 there will be the possibility of afterschool basketball trials v ACGS followed by a Saturday trial on the 7th August v Villanova. Tennis trials / training will hinge around the availability of courts due to construction. The tennis trial v Villanova on the 7th August will be played at the Brisbane Tennis Centre @ Tennyson. Sydney Tour 2010: 26 open and under 16 boys, accompanied by three staff coaches, enjoyed a successful tour to Sydney during the recent June holidays. Staying at The Centre, Randwick, the squad was able to visit many of Sydney’s famous landmarks, watch an
AFL game at ANZ stadium, play touch football on Redfern Oval and train at Centennial Park and Bondi Beach. As well, the boys and staff participated in a meet, hosted by Sutherland Athletics club over a tough, hilly course at Ferntree, Engadine. Some excellent results were recorded and these times are available on the sports notice board. So impressed was the club with our athletes, they received a special mention in Sutherland’s June monthly newsletter. The boys are to be congratulated on the way they conducted themselves, as they received many favourable comments about their manners and behaviour. Thanks should also go to Mr. Peter McLoughlin, Mr. Brendan Kiernan, Mr Matt Poole and the boy’s families for the support in allowing the tour to go ahead. Final Weeks before AIC Championships: All the hard work, hopefully, will come to fruition as the squad approaches the final weeks of the season. Our final AIC preparation involves, a full squad camp at Alexandra Headlands, a pre- AIC Championship trial at St Laurence’s at Runcorn and a team dinner on the Friday evening before AIC Championship day. All squad members need to attend these events, as well as their designated age group training days. Our season focus is on all of the boys, whatever their initial level of athletic ability, being involved in a team environment to improve their self confidence, participating in a variety of fitness activities and team events, enjoying the camaraderie while aiming to improve their individual race times and to develop a life-long love of running. I invite all the members of the college community to be at Limestone Park, Ipswich on Saturday the 31st July to support the team and to congratulate them on another successful season. Finally, bet wishes to Max Neumann and Will Trevor who compete in the State Championships, representing the Met North region, on the 17th/18th of July. Update: Over 70 boys recently attended the annual cross camp help at Alexandra Headlands. Perfect weather greeted the boys as they were put through a tough surf session by the club lifesavers. After renewing their energy reserves, the squad participated in a series of team building activities led by the Total Adventures group. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group have so much fun while doing some serious training. The late afternoon was for rest but 70 boys ended up on the main oval playing touch together until it was too dark to see the ball!! After dinner, the squad members were presented with this year’s shirts and the senior group built on the strong team bonds that have already been developing throughout the season. Later in the evening the boys demonstrated their prowess at Ten Pin bowling- with Jarrod Mackay obtaining the highest score. Sunday saw the boys running in our annual race to Mooloolaba and back to Alex Beach. Some excellent times were recorded by the squad- some very positive signs for AIC on Saturday, the 31st of July. The final event was the annual touch football competition, fiercely competed for as if each game was a test match!! All of the boys who attended need to be congratulated on their very active participation in all parts of the program. The centre manager of the conference centre commented on the exemplary behaviour and excellent manners of all of the boys. Some details for the final weeks:

The AIC division of the Independent Schools AFLQ competition kicked off on Monday with the U14 and U16 teams notching victories over Villanova at Kedron AFC. The competition caters for two teams per school: 14yrs and under and a 16yrs and under side and continues to generate great interest amongst the students; many who have little or no club AFL experience. A season draw can be located on the College website.
