Renos spruce up historic Hammond Maple Ridge will develop an area plan for one its oldest neighbourhoods with community input. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Major overhauls have transformed a pub at one end of Dartford Street and a church at the other in historic Hammond. The white with green trim exterior of By Bailey’s in Hammond has been transformed into black and gold – and with major renovations both inside and outside, old regulars are back at the newly opened Dartford Social House. And the 1960s look of the former Hammond United Church has been updated with wood and modern colours and, for the first time, the building allows congregation members to come through a front door. Hammond is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in British Columbia and still includes many heritage homes and buildings. It will be undergoing an area plan process, most likely starting this year. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin would like the public to get involved in the process and come up with ideas on what they want for their neighbourhood. “There’s a real sense of community down there,” Daykin said about Hammond residents, adding that developing an area plan “gives the community down there the ability to have a say in what happens... as it evolves.” Sonya and Charanjiv Mashiana were looking for a pub/liquor store in an established neighbourhood with homes, businesses, and parks when they found By Bailey’s for sale. “We wanted a place where we could get to know our customers,” Sonya said. They bought By Bailey’s in August and closed it down for

renovations. On Dec. 23, they re-opened with a renovated interior and exterior, a new menu that includes Indian food reflecting their cultural heritage, and a line of taps of craft brew beers. They listened to what their regular customers wanted and they seem to be happy with their changes, the couple reported. The pub and liquor building dates back to the 1920s serving first as a hatchery and later as a pub, known for its live music. The old green carpet and smoking room are gone and only one pool table is in the back, but the changes haven’t stopped old

By Bailey’s customers from coming back to the renovated digs. Other changes include gutting the bathrooms, renovating the kitchen, and putting in a new floor. The menu has been redone and it includes some of the Mashianas’ traditional family Indian recipes, as well as lunch items and salads. The pub serves 12 craft beers – and if customers aren’t sure what they want, they can order four small samplers to see what they like. By Bailey’s was known for its music, and the Mashianas want to bring that back. Online, all the time...

They plan to have music over the weekends, with live bands on Friday nights, a DJ on Saturdays, and music jams – like By Bailey’s used to have – on Sunday evenings. Meat draws benefiting the Maple Ridge Lions Club are held on Fridays at 5 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. They also have sports broadcast on several large screen television, and this will including Canucks games and ultimate fighting. Dartford Social House is planning a grand opening on Jan. 24 with musical artist Ken McCoy and Tony Dell.

Church remodelled

There is no pulpit nor any old church smell left at the former Hammond United Church. Chairs are arranged pew-style in the sanctuary, and sound equipment litters the stage of the newly renovated Open Door Church, a small non-denominational evangelical church on Dartford Street. Bradley Christianson-Barker, the pastor of the small congregation, is hoping that the church will become a community hub, used for more than religious services a couple times a week. continued on page A12...

School looks to grow Meadowridge School in east Maple Ridge is looking to amalgamate its properties including a lot they’ve acquired south of the property. Maple Ridge council gave the application to rezone it from one-family rural residential to a park and school zoning first reading on Tuesday. The long-term goal of the school is to expand up to 800 students, and this is part of the process, said Don Hincks, CFO and business manager of the school. • More at www.mrtimes.com

Balla is back, as publisher

A Pitt Meadows resident returns home, this time at the helm of her community newspaper. by Roxanne Hooper

rhooper@mrtimes.com

Today’s announcement might have something to do with the fact that Shannon Balla has been immersed in the world of community newspapers since childhood. In fact, like her mother before her, Balla started in the advertising end of the business early in her career, first in classifieds and later in advertising sales at the national and community levels. Three years ago, she was promoted to the advertising sales manager’s position, here at the Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows TIMES, then a little more than a year ago moved to another Glacier Media paper, the Langley Advance, to head up its sales team. Well, this week, Balla climbed further up the industry ladder, this time taking over as the new publisher of The TIMES. It’s like coming home for Balla, who has not only worked with this newspaper in past, but has also been a community resident since 2001. “I’m so excited... It really is like coming back for me. This community really is home for myself, my husband D’Arcy, and our children Lauren and Davis. This is where we live, shop, play, and volunteer,” she said. Balla is taking over the reins from Spencer Levan, who has served as publisher of The TIMES for the past 18 months. He has been promoted to vice-

Pitt Meadows resident and long-time newspaper junkie Shannon Balla takes over the helm of her hometown newspaper, The TIMES, today. president of Lower Mainland Publishing (a division of The TIMES’ parent company Glacier Media), and he will take over immediate responsibility of distribution, including operations, sales, and marketing. “I’ve really enjoyed the 18 months I’ve had here,” he said. “I enjoyed working with the staff that are here. They’re very mature and responsible, and I’ve enjoyed even more being involved in the community,” Levan added, noting he has every intention of staying in Maple Ridge and remaining active in the community, including his long-standing role as a hockey coach. Levan was pleased to hear of Balla’s return to The TIMES,

indicating her familiarity with the community and her strengths in sales and marketing will position the newspaper well for the future, in what he described as a very rapidly changing industry. “It’s a big challenge,” Balla said. “But I’m looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and working hard alongside the rest of The TIMES team and the community to not only keep growing this newspaper, but to help grow local businesses, and to continue fostering strong community partnerships.” Balla said she’s excited to keep up the newspaper’s history of capturing compelling stories about this town’s people, places, and happenings in not only the print but online platforms

– especially given all the societal shifts being made to the digital world. “I have to say it again. I’m so excited to be returning and to putting all of my energy and effort into my hometown,” Balla said. “I look forward to reconnecting with the community in the days and weeks to come, and I would like to invite anyone in who wants to discuss business and sponsorship opportunities.” “This newspaper has been serving this community for more than a quarter century, and we look forward to continuing… And I want to hear from people in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge about how they see us best doing that.”

Maple Ridge council voted unanimously on Tuesday evening to move forward in changing the District of Maple Ridge into the City of Maple Ridge. From a “marketing point of view,” becom-

ing a city is a good idea, said Mayor Ernie Daykin, adding that many people don’t know what a “district” is, whereas terms like “village” and “city” are more clear. The District will go ahead with an alternate approval process whereby if more than 10 per cent of the electors demand it, a full election will be held on the issue.

The alternate approval process will cost $1,500 but if an election were held, with polling booths and a general election day, it would cost $75,000. Signs in Maple Ridge don’t include the word “District” so there won’t be any cost for changing public signage or how the municipality’s trucks are labelled.

Community

Newcomers welcomed A workshop next week at the library will be about immigration. Making Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows welcoming communities for newcomers will be discussed at the fourth and final Welcoming Communities dialogue. On Jan. 21, Family Education and Support Centre will have an open dialogue at the Maple Ridge Library from 1 to 4 p.m. to discuss barriers for immigrants and identify possible collaboration networks in order to create a more welcoming and inclusive community. The program is a 12-month initiative funded by the Immigrant Integration Branch of the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism

and Skills Training and the Minister Responsible for Labour. The program is two-fold: to make newcomers find resources and feel welcomed, and to raise awareness about immigration and become a welcoming host community, said Kim Angel, a facilitator of the program through the Family Education and Support Centre. Everyone is welcome to attend the event, she added. “The more diverse the participants are, the more broad we can be with recommendations and idea,” she said. To register for the event on Jan. 21, go to www.eventbrite.ca or phone 604-4676044, ext. 109. Or look for a link at www. welcomingcommunities.familyed.bc.ca.

Prize packages

rhooper@mrtimes.com

Screams could be heard from family members in the background, when staff from the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association called to notify winners of the Win Your Wish contest. Maple Ridge’s Terry O’Brien won a $1,500 gift certificate from Fuller Watson, but when the BIA’s events coordinator Liam Gray called shortly after the draw, it wasn’t Terry, but his wife heard shouting with joy in the background. Coincidentally, the O’Briens entered the

draw by writing their name and package number on the back of a Fuller Watson receipt, after having purchased a sofa from the historic Maple Ridge company during December. Now, they can use their windfall to buy more furniture and/or mattresses from Fuller Watson. Their prize package also included an iPad mini. For the first time ever, the BIA coordinated this Christmas contest this holiday season, where people could visit any of the downtown merchants and write their name, telephone number, and their choice gift package number on the back of a receipt, drop it in the ballot box, and potentially win one of four $2,000 prize packages. The contest, dubbed Win Your Wish, featured a series of package prizes.

Our View

Big Data is a Big Brother Google, the search engine, has become so indispensable so rapidly that it’s hard to imagine how we ever lived without it. Google has its fingers in almost every corner of the Internet, from maps to scanned books, social media to video sharing. If you’ve used the Internet in the last four or five years, you’ve used a Google product or looked at a Google ad. And it’s the ads that are proving problematic when they collide with Canada’s privacy laws. A Canadian with sleep apnea recently noticed that everywhere he went online, he was seeing ads for devices that help people breathe better at night. Why? Because he’d looked up such devices on one site. Google noted this, and its ads began popping up every time he visited a site that used Google ads. This is the high-tech equivalent of me looking over your shoulder while you check out a pamphlet on, say, mobility scooters, then sending you daily flyers about scooters, crutches, wheelchair lifts, shower seats, and so on. Medical information is considered sensitive and private in Canada. In the case of the man with sleep apnea, the federal privacy commissioner has agreed that his rights were violated, and Google has agreed to back off. This is a larger issue than a single case, though. Google may be the blue whale of search engines and data collection, but it’s not the only critter in the ecosystem of the Internet. There are plenty more, and many of them are harder to trace and less scrupulous. They include everything from the American NSA to our own governments and spy agencies, to a wide variety of profit-seeking corporations, to out-andout scam artists. Canada needs to educate its people about their rights and risks online, as well as prepare to be tough about how it enforces privacy rules. -M.C.

Taxation

New leadership needed

Dear Editor, Mr. Gienow has hit the nail on the head [Wasted money raises taxes, Jan. 7 Letters, TIMES]. More people are getting involved in municipal politics because they see that poor planning is causing increased taxes that don’t show a return on taxpayer investment. I have operated a business in Maple Ridge since 1988, and due to the economic downturn in 2008, it was necessary to cut spending where possible and to diversify and market the business to enhance its profitability. Does Maple Ridge’s planning department do this? No. They actively promote urban sprawl and high-density residential housing (i.e. Albion) without the corresponding industrial, commercial, and retail development that pays two to six times the tax revenue, then leaves the residential taxpayer to foot the bill to maintain the infrastructure. Also, our hard-earned dollars are being spent to shop outside of Maple Ridge (FreeMont Village, etc.) to support their retail outlets and tax base. It’s time decisions by staff and council were made as if they were spending their own money. Time has come for new leadership on council. Grover Telford, Maple Ridge

can Come clean Kamp Dissension be a good thing

Dear Editor, As a Canadian who believes in and stands for the true Canadian values of justice and democracy, I’m deeply concerned about the recent revelations of the RCMP investigating Mike Duffy and Nigel Wright. What has happened to the transparency and “open” government Randy Kamp promised when first elected as member of Parliament? Why does his government continue to lie to Canadians regarding the payoffs to a Conservative senator who used to be a “journalist?” I am fully aware of the tactics utilized by the National Citizens Coalition, Fraser Institute, Civitas, and other Conservative think-tanks that promote corporate propaganda to lie, confuse, and distort the issues facing Canadians. Leo Strauss, right-wing philosopher and presenter of the “Noble Lie,” (the ruling elites “need” to use deception and guile to rule over the “bewildered herd”) would be proud of Kamp’s government’s efforts. But, as a Canadian who cares about justice and real democracy in government, I’m disappointed in his government’s way of operating. Come clean, Canadians are not that stupid! John E. McKenzie, Maple Ridge

Dear Editor, Mayor Deb Walters says she is happy with the 1.9 per cent tax increase in Pitt Meadows. I bet. Walters and her supporters on council, [Doug] Bing, [Gwen] O’Connell, and [Tracy] Miyashita, have all spent the past two years ignoring the wishes of Pitt Meadows taxpayers. They have their own agenda for Pitt Meadows, and are willing to spend taxpayers into the poorhouse to accomplish it. While taking credit for keeping the tax increase to 1.9 per cent, we all know that Mayor Walters has never supported tax reductions. Only the efforts of Tom Murray with the tax petition he launched, and the support of residents, that some tax relief is being realized. Congratulations to Councillors [Dave] Murray, [Bruce] Bell, and [Janis] Elkerton for their ongoing efforts to keep spending under control. Too bad that their efforts are stymied by the mayor’s majority on council. Archie Blankers, Pitt Meadows

Grads get glammed up with help from community Local students get assistance for graduation night with a head-to-toe makeover.

In early December, two Meadowridge students, Victoria Horne and Layne Liberty, put on a fashion show as a fundraiser for Putting on the Glitz. They raised $615 and brought in $5,000 worth of dresses. Two grad photos will be taken: one in a cap and gown, which is provided for them in their school colours, and one in their evening wear. Participants receive goodie bags with products to help them primp and preen on grad night. Cherak told The TIMES that last year the community was generous with their donations and were extremely supportive. “I think it strikes a chord with a lot of people – everybody should have the chance to attend their graduation festivities with excitement and pride, and I think people feel that,” Cherak said.

To raise money for the March event, Plea is organizing a grad dress consignment sale on Jan. 25 and 26 at the Greg Moore Youth Centre called Twice in a Lifetime. The sale will be in the multi-purpose room from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. To register dresses the fee is $25 per dress and $10 for any additional dresses from same consignee. Church opens its doors to community ...continued from page A1

While some churches are moving into school spaces and halls, renting space to worship in, the Open Door Church is going in the other direction – purchasing a church and opening it up for rentals and community use. “We want it to be a space that the community can come and use,” Christianson-Barker said, adding he hopes it will be used every night of the week and not just on Sundays. A perfect example was a fundraiser organized in December by Ria Jade to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan that hit the Philippines late last year. Jade approached the pastor about renting the church for the fundraiser, but, in order to support the cause, they didn’t charge rent so more money could go to help typhoon victims. The church ended up co-hosting the event and

about 100 people came to watch 11 performances. “It was a real community effort,” ChristiansonBarker said. The original church was built in 1912, and that section now serves as a Montessori school. In the mid-1920s, it became Hammond United Church.

In 1960, the current sanctuary was built, and it remained without any significant changes until the Open Door Church took over. Hammond United Church amalgamated with St. Andrew’s Haney United Church a year and a half ago and became Golden

Ears United, located at 222nd Street and Dewdney Trunk Road. In addition to facade and interior renovations, the church now has an entrance at the front. “We were the Open Door Church, but there was no front door,” Christianson-Barker said.

Dancers tap into Germany

Six local youth competed for Canada.

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows were well-represented in Riesa, Germany, last month. Six local tap dancers made the journey to the European city to compete in the International Dance Organization’s World Tap Dance Championships, an event hosted by the International Dance Organization. Known in dance circles as the “Olympics of Dance,” the competition saw 2,000 dancers from around the globe compete for the world title. The District’s junior category dancers, Kieran Krosser and Isabelle Flavin, had solid finishes in the small and large group formations, with Flavin finishing 18th in small and ninth in the large. Performing in the adult category was Shayla Bodnarchuk and Shelby Greaves from Pitt Meadows, and Franqui Barber and Emily Flavin of Maple Ridge. Emily’s solo performance earned her an 18th place

Greaves also performed in a trio, which won 19th. Heather Bodnarchuk, Shayla’s mother, who also works at Peggy Peats School of Dance where Shayla trains, said it was an amazing experience for everyone involved and there was good competition from all, specifically Switzerland, England, and the U.S.A. Canada held its own though, and Bodnarchuk said this was the “strongest team Canada has put through from Western

Canada for many years.” Other highlights for the dancers included making new friends from around the world and seeing a bit of Germany, added Bodnarchuk. As for what’s next, the dancers will continue to compete for their studios in various competitions in all types of dance. All indicated they’ll soon be auditioning again for the national team, as well. Shayla and Emily have also made another hip-hop crew and plan to compete with this group. That group hopes to make the worlds in Vegas this summer.

Palm Springs, Anyone? by Samira Hodania

With Modernism Week just around the corner (February 13-23) and a particularly arctic Canadian winter underway, the desert seems just about perfect right now.

Conveniently located in the heart of the uptown design district, Alcazar is all about the sleek and modern ABC’s (Alcazar, Birba and Cheekys). Appointed with local art, Alcazar is the youngest of the triangle, mastering comfort by spoiling their guests with imported Italian linens and townie bikes. Attracting a diverse crowd, Birba serves a creative menu with Italian wood fired pizzas and locally-sourced, hand-crafted cocktails. In the morning, refuel with the breakfast quesadilla and a freshly squeezed kale smoothie at Cheeky’s and you’ll be ready to hit the town. From $120/night, www.alcazarpalmsprings.com

Leaders included Barb Gustafson and Meghan Trafanko. The Ridge Meadows branch of OCC contributed 3,711 shoeboxes packed full of gifts and toiletries for needy children living in poor and unsafe conditions around the world.

Purely Perfect has recently come out with the ultimate “unshampoo” Cleansing Crème that could be a game changer. Used on wet hair, the crème takes the impurities out of your hair but leaves the good stuff like essential oils to make your hair shiny and keep colour vibrant. There’s also no need for conditioner because your hair’s natural conditioners are still intact. Rinse, and repeat (eventually). $40 at www.purelyperfect.com

Cold-weather Kicks

“Go play” doesn’t quite do the trick when there’s a sugared-up posse gathered in the living room.

We’re stoked to start our running resolution… just as soon as we gear up.

Get them out of the “I’m bored” mood (and into the play room!) with a Pom Pom Maker kit ($8). Great for a group activity (like, if you were having a party), cut the pieces out and let the kids go crazy wrapping yarn. No glue, no paint, nothing that can be used as a weapon - it’s a sweetly simple craft for everyone. Bonus: pom poms actually look adorable when finished and can be strewn about the house or hung on a string for decoration. Hear that? It’s the sound of peace and quiet. Order the Clover Pom Pom maker ($8) from Collage Collage, http://shop.collagecollage.ca

First on the shopping list is a pair of kicks that can stand up to a Canadian winter, like Nike’s Air Pegasus+30 Shield ($139 at MEC). These beauties are water-repellent, highly reflective (will we ever see the sunshine again?) and lined in (comfy cozy) microfleece. And did we mention that they’re purple leopard with a neon accent? In case the running thing doesn’t get off the ground, we’ll just move to our plan B resolution: Adopt the athletic fashion trend. $139 at MEC stores nationwide, www.mec.ca

Jordan Wright (left), 15, met up with fellow Pitt Meadows resident Dilly the Clown at a Sunshine Foundation party in Burnaby recently. This was Jordan’s fourth year at the party. He received a dream from the foundation five years ago. Meanwhile, Ridge Meadows RCMP auxiliary member Lynne Bradley (above) and fellow Maple Ridge resident Casey Wright, a 13-year-old honourary RCMP staff sergeant major, boogied along to the tunes.

Sunshine Foundation

Officers buddy to bring cheer to sick kids

A party helped local children with health issues forget their ailments for a while and focus on having fun. by Roxanne Hooper

rhooper@mrtimes.com

Hours after Jordan Wright and all the other kids had left the ballroom at the Hilton Hotel Metrotown, the 15-year-old Pitt Meadows boy was still beaming. Jordan was one of about 50 sick children invited to participate in the annual Sunshine Foundation party at the Burnaby hotel recently, and he’ll tell anyone who asks that it’s an event he looks forward to all year long. “He just loves coming,” said his mother, Tiina Wright, who noted this was Jordan’s fourth year at the event. After breaking his leg last year, Jordan has been confined primarily to a wheelchair, and his Mom suspects one of the biggest motivations to attend this year’s event was a chance to “ditch the parents” for a few hours (parents – including Jordan’s folks Greg and Tiina – are typically not in the ballroom, but given a separate room to socialize with other parents over lunch). Jordan was first introduced to the Sunshine Foundation five years ago, when he participated in a one-day group “dreamlift” to Disneyland. Before going on the lift, his mother described Jordan as a “very shy, timid” boy.

“He came back a totally different kid, an outgoing personality… He just had so much fun. It’s the best thing for any kid. It makes them feel independent and grown up because there’s no parents,” Wright told The TIMES. As was the case during the dreamlift, Jordan was again buddied with a police officer at the recent party. At the three-hour luncheon, Jordan spent time doing crafts, playing games, and watching a series of entertainers with Terry Robertson, an RCMP auxiliary member for more than 30 years. Despite both of them being “veterans” at the annual foundation luncheon, Robertson said he was moved to learn Jordan’s story of how the youngster was diagnosed at age five with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. While the experience was touching for Robertson – who returned for his third consecutive Sunshine luncheon – he also found it inspiring. He was impressed to see how the Grade 10 Pitt Meadows Secondary student and his family live with the prognosis, describing Jordan as his hilarious, funny, and charming new friend. During the event, Robertson and other participating officers echoed the same sentiment: they were honoured to be there, to share in the fun, and help the children forget any ailments they might be living with – at least for a few hours. Jordan and his family were not the only local residents at the Sunshine party. Other guests included 13-year-

Casey is an honourary RCMP staff sergeant major, who has been a regular at the Sunshine Foundation parties for years, the last five years taking on added duties as co-host and emcee alongside Burnaby RCMP Staff Sgt. Andy LeClair. “He had a blast. When he was not on the stage, he was working the room and meeting lots of people,” said Casey’s father Larry Wright, who was in attendance too, snapping photographs for the foundation.

Other local faces at the event included volunteers Donna and Jim (a.k.a. Dilly The Clown ) Milburn, Ridge Meadows RCMP auxiliaries Lynne Bradley and Martyn Garner, Maple Ridge resident and Coquitlam RCMP Staff Sgt. Marc Alexander, as well as event organizer Judy Olson of Pitt Meadows, Sunshine’s dream fulfillment chairperson in the Lower Mainland. She’s been volunteering with the foundation for 17 years. “It’s because I truly believe in what the charity is for… it’s all about the kids. I love that so much of the money raised goes to helping these children.” But when it comes to the

longest standing local Sunshine volunteer, the title belongs to retired Mountie and Maple Ridge resident Daryl Stone, who has been volunteering with Sunshine for 23 years (including a 15-year stint as Lower Mainland president). Wrapping up his duties as president, Stone said his “greatest rewards in recent years has been the elimination of a waiting list for a child’s dream to be fulfilled.” Since 1987, the foundation has provided dreams for 7,000 children. But there’s lots more work to do, he said, indicating that while he’s stepped down as president he’s going to “stay fully engaged.” “Currently there are 50,000 children in Canada with severe physical disabilities and life threatening illnesses. So today once a dream is applied for, there is virtually no waiting list. Last year, during our 25th anniversary, we provided one dream per day for the entire year – which included three separate dream lifts nationally.” Another reward for Stone was the elimination of financial qualifiers for dream applicants. “At one time to qualify for a dream, the family income was a factor, but today that is no longer an issue and dreams are provided regardless of the families financial status,” he said. “For me, the personal reward is the motivation of knowing the work which goes into fundraising and delivering individual dreams makes you glad to be a small part of a big story,” Stone said.

Linden on hand for gym opening

by Jeff Weltz

A fly fishing instructor and outdoor writer, Jeff has fished the area since the early 1970s. Contact him at fishingnewsman@gmail.com

Success comes with patience

I

recently listened to a five-year-old as he told me about going fishing and not even getting a bite. I asked him how long he fished. With bright eyes and a dead serious look, he explained, “I fished five minutes and didn’t catch anything.” Jimmy Houston from his book, Catch of the Day. We all laugh when we read that passage; yet how many of us began fishing thinking it would be a whole lot easier than it is. I often wonder if some of us do ourselves a disservice by setting the bar too high, with all the raving about our exceptional catches and embellishing all the others. To be fair to those following us, we need to explain that while we all strive for the perfection of a fish every cast, such perfection is seldom achieved. A preacher friend of mine addresses this subject with a story about a group of professional fishermen. Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.” “We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in a boat, but they caught nothing all night. Fishing is a challenge, a challenge to our ability to outwit a fish. The truth is, we only catch the dumb ones.

Online report

Weltz also provides a weekly update on fishing conditions in the region, and offers tips for flies.

Trevor Linden was the main attraction at the sneak peak opening of his new CLUB16 Trevor Linden Fitness gym on Tuesday.

Eric Zimmer/TIMES

by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com

Until now, Robert Lewis didn’t have a gym membership. That changed this past Tuesday, when the Maple Ridge resident attended a sneak preview opening of the new CLUB16 Trevor Linden fitness facility in Haney. “This is my first membership,” Lewis explained, adding that up to that point, he wasn’t aware of the CLUB16 brand, but liked what he saw. “It’s fantastic. I love the equipment, it’s easy to use, it’s all really nice,” he said. Lewis hadn’t come with the intention of signing up, but was enticed to do so after seeing what was offered. “I just wanted to try out some of the equipment and View see what it was like. I knew more photos they had some free weights, with but I really like the rest of the equipment too.” For the man behind the or online name, co-owner of the franA large part of accomchise and former Canuck star plishing this goal comes Trevor Linden, it’s feedback from having well-trained like this that encourages him and welcoming staff, he to keep growing CLUB16. added. “I think what sets us apart from “Nothing makes me happier other gyms is the value, as well as than when I’m at a coffee shop or the mentality and atmosphere of something and people tell me ‘I’m our clubs,” Linden told The TIMES during a preview event Tuesday a member at your club and your where he was chatting with cusstaff is super friendly and helptomers and signing autographs. ful’.” “We’re a very unintimidating Linden insisted that CLUB16 club – we pride ourselves on havisn’t a “typical gym, where people ing members that are of all shapes, are throwing weights around and ages, and sizes, who can come everything.” in here, feel comfortable, and be His new facility in Maple Ridge themselves,” Linden said. came as a result of customer

demand. “When we opened our first club in Coquitlam three years ago, so many people approached me and said ‘when are you opening in Maple Ridge?’” Linden believes there was demand for a new gym because Maple Ridge is “a health-conscious community,” and that up to this point, it’s a place that “has been a bit under-served in the fitness market.” This sentiment was echoed by Lewis. “I want to get in shape,” he told The TIMES. Asked about the membership

fee, Lewis said “the price is right.” He explained that membership costs and long-term contracts were two of the reasons he hadn’t held any sort of gym membership until now. “I didn’t like the contracts, so this is perfect,” he said. “Fifteen dollars a month and you can get out when you’re ready.” The new fitness facility opened to the public this morning (Thursday) at 9 a.m. and is at #101-22420 Dewdney Trunk Rd. Ridge Meadows Racers represented at Games

Seven skaters recently learned they will compete in next month’s provincial.

With the BC Winter Games (BCWG) drawing ever closer, Ridge Meadows Racers (RMRacers) have learned their club will be well-represented at the provincial competition.

On Dec. 1, Zone 3 held their qualifier at Planet Ice in the Cam Neely rink. Known as one of the toughest in the province, the Zone 3 qualifier encompasssed cities from White Rock to Hope. The RMRacers had nine skaters out of 28 who competed for medals, as well as spots on the Zone 3 team.

Some choices are hard.

Racers Tim Song and Janie Green earned their spots during the Zone 3 qualifiers, while three more Racers were announced earlier this month as wildcards: Marshall Shupe, Pascal Chassay and Shivani Bahadur will be joining their teammates at the BCWG in Feb. 20 to 23, in Mission.

Soccer club’s raffle winner nets a new car

A Burnaby resident received an early Christmas present in the form of a 2014 Toyota Sport.

Christmas turned out to be a whole lot merrier for five lucky ticket holders, who took part in the West Coast Auto Group Football Club Car Raffle. On Dec. 21 at West Coast Toyota in Pitt Meadows, Carol Brine of Richmond drove away with the first prize. She was the winner of a brand new car courtesy of West Coat Auto Group. Brine chose a 2014 Toyota Sport. Other winners in this year’s WCAGFC raffle included: • Second prize: an entertainment package from Audio Visual Limited, valued at $1,000 – Bill Clifford, Burnaby; • Third prize: a Whitecaps soccer family pack valued at $800 – Barb Lee, Langley;

• Fourth prize: $500 cash – Carla Guiterrez; and • Fifth prize: $250 spa package from Esthetique Day Spa – Joe Dingwall. On hand for the presentation were members of the WCAGFC U14 Flyers girls team, which sold the most raffle tickets (162 in total), and each player received a West Coast FC rain jacket for their efforts. Each year, through the support of the club’s major sponsor, West Coast Auto Group, WCAGFC raises funds through its car raffle that allows the club to provide soccer programming for all players, while keeping registration fees amongst the lowest in the Lower Mainland. “This year the club raised $66,500, exceeding last year’s raffle and solidifying WCAGFC’s position as one of the premier soccer organizations in the province,” noted Jeff Dumont, director of the West Coast Auto Group Football Club and Alouette District/5 District rep.

The West Coast Auto Group Football Club U14 Flyers were on-hand at West Coast Toyota for a raffle giveaway.

Chicago calls up Leblanc by Eric Zimmer

editorial@mrtimes.com

Karina Leblanc, the Maple Ridge homegrown soccer star and goalkeeper in the National Women’s Soccer League, (NWSL) is packing her bags in Portland and heading across the country to begin playing for the Chicago Red Stars. In exchange, the Stars gave up their second-round picks in the 2015 NWSL college draft.

Last season, Leblanc ranked second amongst the league’s goaltenders, with 92 saves. She’s also a seasoned veteran of the Canadian National Team. Rory Dames, head coach of the Stars, said that Leblanc is “an important piece” for the team because “she’s a proven winner.” Dames added that Leblanc’s experience in winning championships “will be very important for our young team this year.”
