Mess age From the Dir ector I hope you are ready for some summer fun! Here is our summer schedule, classes start on June 18th. We have something for everyone. We strive to offer something in each major geographic area so you will find a course in your own back yard. If you are a history buff, I suggest you consider Jack Williams’ class on Kings and Queens of the Monarchy in Oceanside. Or how about “The Movie Camera and the Ballot Box” a great topic being offered in Oceanside and Rancho Santa Fe. If your interest lies in literature why not study Edgar Allan Poe and Kate Chopin in Temecula. Or explore playwrights, Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams, and Jean-Paul Sartre in Escondido. Try your hand at creative writing in San Marcos or explore watercolor painting in Carlsbad. Sit back and appreciate art: everything from cave paintings in Carlsbad to famous Renaissance art in Rancho Santa Fe. You can always sip some French wine in San Marcos with Dominic Colangelo our wine expert. For a full listing of all course offered open this up and look inside! They say “it takes a village” to raise a child, it also takes a village to serve over 500 members in 12 locations. We have 40 volunteers and need more! Won’t you consider joining our team? Give me a call at 760-750-8712! As a member of our Osher program you can take advantage of student discounts offered through ASI. THE OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE

In the Spotlight:

Laurie Richards After decades in the legal field in Southern California--from legal secretary, starting in 1967, to lawyer starting in 1975—Laurie decided it was time to turn her analytical expertise to something more enjoyable than battling legal problems. She asked herself how she could combine her love of mentoring, her respect for the law and her love of writing, and she found one answer at Mt. San Jacinto Community College, where she teaches paralegal courses and has become the program coordinator. But she also took on volunteer activities as the Judging Chair of the Short Story Competition for the San Diego Book Awards. Three years ago she joined the Osher team as our creative writing instructor. Although publishing that Great American Novel has eluded her so far, it’s a quest she loves. She can’t get enough of learning all the nuances of the writing craft and helping others realize their own potential. You can join Laurie’s class on Thursdays on campus, “Pen to Page: A Course for the Closet Writer”. The students always give her rave reviews. She is now an active member of our Curriculum Planning Committee and was instrumental in recruiting numerous talented faculty through her connections with local Community Colleges. Laurie Richards, take a bow! We are so lucky to have you!

From Cave Painting to Gothic Cathedrals: Ancient and Medieval Western Art Are you planning a trip to Europe? Fascinated by art? Wishing to enrich yourself culturally? Art history can fulfill a number of purposes but the sheer enjoyment of beautiful works of art and architecture and a desire to know more about their origins and purpose is reason enough! Douglas R. Barker M.A., a professional art history instructor and tour guide, will take you on a slide-illustrated journey that begins about 30,000 B.C. in the caves of France and Spain and ultimately arrives at the magnificent architecture and stained glass of the Gothic cathedrals. Along the way we will examine ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, the dream-like frescoes of Minoan Crete, the temples and statuary of Greece, the Etruscans and Rome, Byzantine icons and mosaics, the magical art of the Celts and Vikings, Islamic palaces, glassware and carpets, Early Medieval churches and illuminated manuscripts and much more besides. Understanding the art of the past is one of the best and most enjoyable ways to understand history, religion and foreign cultures or prepare for a European adventure. Douglas Barker has lived in Europe for 14 years where he traveled, studied alternative education and took groups of Americans and Germans on art/study tours in Europe and Asia. He has taught well over 100 courses in art history at colleges and at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.

Midnight in Paris & Other Magic Moments with Woody Allen This class will study Woody Allen as a writer & director in such movies as Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), Matchpoint (2005) and Midnight in Paris (2011). Given Allen’s love for the humanities— from music to architecture, painting to literature—we’ll look at his sources of inspiration and see how Allen adapts them to cinema. We’ll also study Barbara Kopple’s documentary “Wild Man Blues” (1997), which contrasts Allen’s persona in movies.

The Wines of France The names of French wines can be difficult to pronounce; most are named after a region, town, or village from where the wine was produced like Champagne, Beaujolais, or Sauternes. In contrast, the wines in the United States are named after the grape variety used to make the wine such as Chardonnay, Merlot, etc. Take the mystique out of the great wines of this century as Dominic “Dick” Colangelo leads you through six weeks of discussion and tastings, covering the most popular regions of France.

The Movie Camera and the Ballot Box: Hollywood and Politics

Hell is Other People: Plays by O’Neill, Williams, and Sartre

The movie business began as a mixture of education and entertainment. From an early date, film makers used the media to advance various ideas that involved political motives. American cinema has been used to spread unethical propaganda and to promote genuine enlightenment. At times, individual movies have gone beyond the overt political intentions of film makers to create their own unintended ideological consequences. What are the major political themes seen in the movies over time? How has Hollywood responded to the politics offered by rival centers of film making in Asia and Europe? In what ways have recent films reflected, or rejected, contemporary American values?

What often makes great theater great are the dynamic relationships that develop between the characters on stage. These relationships and characters are often hateful, loving, sympathetic, complicated, contradictory, and above all, mirrors of the values we as individuals hold so dear. We will read four selected plays of America’s greatest playwrights, Eugene O’Neill and Tennessee Williams, and one more from French playwright, Jean-Paul Sartre, in an exploration of the many complicated human relationships these writers have brought to the stage and discuss the successes each have had in connecting with their audiences. Portions of one or more of the film adaptions will also be shown and discussed in class.

Lost Cities of Ancient World American Masters: The Works of Edgar Allan Poe and Kate Chopin

Wednesday Courses

Known as the Master of Horror, Poe is a favorite among readers. He wrote about what he knew: death and love, often combining the two. He dabbled in the supernatural, but is best known for his Gothic works such as “The Fall of the House of Usher” and his poems. Inventor of the detectice novel, Poe stumped readers with works such as “Murders in the Rue Morgue” and “The Purloined Letter.” Poe’s greatest works will be covered as well as a history of his life (such as his marriage to his 13 year old cousin) and his accomplishments. Kate Chopin was one of the earliest American feminist authors. Born in 1851, she shocked readers with her modern views on the female role, especially within Louisiana socitey. She questioned the traditional role women played within marriage and society. Critics called her novel “The Awakening” morbid, vulgar, and disagreeable. However, by the 1950’s scholars began to recognize the novel as an insightful work of fiction. Today Chopin is known for being one of the greatest women writers in American history. Works covered will be “The Awakening”, “The Story of an Hour,” “The Storm,” “A Pair of Silk Stocking,” and others.

Sustaining US Global Leadership and Challenges for the 21st Century The presentations will explore the interaction of politics and religion in the region with emphasis on current events in Iran, Syria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Egypt, Israel, Iraq and Afghanistan. The discussions will address the interrelationships between these countries and will explore how sectarian violence between the Sunni, Shiites and Kurds exacerbates the situation. It appears that the “Winds of Democracy” are blowing in the Middle East as evidenced by the recent Arab Spring Uprisings. The question remains: once the coalition governments are established, will these governments be pro Western or anti-Western in their relationship with the west. The future for that region will be a combination of what” will be “and what “can be.”

Taking Fear Out of Finance The goal of this class is to give you the practical knowledge that leads to financial clarity and confidence. If the stock market keeps you awake at night, you are frustrated with low interest rates at the bank, conversations with your attorney, CPA or financial advisor result in confusion rather than clarity, or you are now making financial decisions by yourself rather than sharing them with a partner, this class is for you. We will discuss how to reduce stock market risk, long-term care insurance, Roth conversions, annuity pitfalls, reverse mortgages, reducing taxes on IRA distributions to heirs, revocable and irrevocable trusts. The instructor, Fred Wollman, CFP, is a fee-based financial planner with 30 years experience whose focus is financial education. His passion is de-mystifying the financial world to help people make informed decisions based upon reason and logic.

Express yourself by creating easy-to-do watercolor greeting cards. Our course will get the beginning watercolorist’s feet wet and challenge the more advanced painter to create new, and original cards. Drawing expertise is not required. Each class begins with a demonstration by the instructor. Students are then given a line drawing of the subject which they will transfer onto watercolor paper. A color reference photo is also provided. After transferring the drawing, the painting will begin. Participants are encouraged to use their favorite (detailed or loose) painting approach. This class is all about enjoying what you are doing. Each meeting includes a new ‘summer season’ scene, incorporates basic watercolor techniques, and closes with a discussion of the session. Creating greeting is rewarding. If you give your cards as gifts, most people will save and treasure your thoughtful painting. Art should be joyful, not intimidating. The cards are so much fun to paint, that you will find yourself wanting to make more on your own. This class is all about enjoying what you are doing.
