Welcome to ʻHeritage Open Daysʼ, the Isle of Manʼs annual heritage festival showcasing the vibrant and diverse cultural heritage of our Island. These special events offer exclusive opportunities to engage with Manx culture, community, arts and history at locations across the Island.

As hosts, Manx National Heritage funds and co-ordinates this popular annual event which brings together public, private and charitable sectors, with many individuals and volunteers who kindly deliver a programme of behind-the-scenes tours, talks, insights and walks - showcasing our heritage in a unique way with their immense knowledge and fascinating stories.

Our 2023 programme introduces many new places to visit that are not routinely open to the public, in addition to many firm favourites. By popular request, come and explore Manx National Heritage collections and galleries, including our National Archives, large object store and the National Arts collection. You can also join our archaeologists to discover more about Vikings at Maughold Head and Peel Castle, and hear about the life of people at Rushen Abbey.

To celebrate 150 years of Steam Railways on the Island, Isle of Man Railways will be sharing fascinating insights to the Islandʼs unique steam railway operations and how they have been so impressively maintained. The Public Record Office are also highlighting this major milestone in Manx history, taking guests on a deep dive into the archives for a journey through Manx heritage railways.

New for 2023 we have a folklore tour of Glen Mona with Culture Vannin and if you like outdoor adventures, you can partake in an exploration of the ruins of the Upper Cornaa Valley and Keeill Woirrey. For a more hands-on approach you can learn about the Laxey Skiff building project, witness the art of constructing the rowing boats and join a guided tour of their workshops. There is also a nautical themed experience where you can immerse yourself in the history of the Peel RNLI Lifeboat station.

Heritage Open Days events are free for all to enjoy and we extend our thanks as always to our knowledgeable contributors, people who share our passion for heritage and culture and who give their time freely to create this much-loved annual event. We also thank our many visitors for your support and involvement.

Come along and be inspired by our Islandʼs abundant heritage and culture, and to see first-hand the relevance of the past and how we have evolved as a nation. There is plenty to see and much to be proud of. These unique events are extremely popular and do sell out quickly, so please do book early to avoid disappointment.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Isle of Manʼs Heritage Open Days Festival 2023.
