Best of Me...Cat Turner

I'm an escapee from the finance sector, now spending my time volunteering in the ethical, green and arts sectors. I've written 17 books (and one on the way) – all study texts or technical works on finance sector governance, and similar subjects. I also do a little expert witnessing and consulting work. Best meal (cooked by you or by another): Oh! Anything not cooked by me. My twin daughters made me breakfast the other day (it consisted mostly of Twixes,

cucumber chunks, and hard boiled eggs...) because they wanted to treat me, saying “but Mummy, you live on our leftovers”. Spot on. Best outfit or single piece of clothing: My ace black leather flat pirate boots. Comfy as a sofa, reeking of street cred! Best memory: In Fagnoon, near Cairo – an arts centre where I studied for and gained my Permaculture Design Certificate last year. My twins came with me, and were enthralled – it was just like a playcentre, but for adults, with zip wires and ladders all over the

place. I enjoyed learning some amazing stuff, and knowing that the girls were happy and part of it all too.aystack moment…I HAD to marry him! Best way to spend the day: A later-than usual getting up time (we usually get up at 6am, and it's a killer!) - followed by making pancakes for breakfast, then a short hike to a little beach near us - Glen Trunk, and some paddling and such like. Best advice: My mum told me, very accurately: ‘You wouldn't worry half as much about what other people think of

you, if you knew just how rarely they did.’ Best place in the Isle of Man: I'm really enjoying being at the Sayle Gallery, in Douglas - it's a lovely space, and bursting with the most amazing artworks (all free to view – come on in if you haven't yet!). It's a real privilege to be here and help out a couple of days a week. And aside from that the Island as a whole is a real treat – the girls and I like exploring new walking trails, little thumbnails of beaches and so on. We know how lucky we are to live here!

Getting catty about Facebook Sometimes – alright, most of the time – it is hard to reconcile the immense power of social media such as Facebook with the complete inanity of nearly all its content. Now this will not come as a startling revelation to anyone, nor can the majority of us be excused. That includes those people who have posted/shared status updates and pictures bemoaning the fact that, with all the power of the internet, it is used mainly for playing second rate computer games and looking at pictures of cats. It’s a little like the broadsheet newspapers sneering at tabloid coverage of celebrity tittle tattle, while repeating the same tittle tattle in order to mock it. Or, for that matter, writing a cutting edge column expressing bewilderment at social media. We’re certainly not on a par with David Cameron and his friends, who have made it quite clear – through one tweet – that the Tory Party is quite separate from the kind of people who drink beer and enjoy bingo. But, I digress. The matter in hand is the inanity of Facebook and the rather sinister way in which it draws in users to tell the world they really have nothing better to do with their lives. Aside from weather updates that can be

found just as easily by looking out of the window, people trying to sell you things, and contact with family members you really can’t be bothered to actually speak to, the primary role of Facebook is to remove the need for mindless chatter in the home. Now, there’s nothing wrong with mindless chatter online. Just this week, I’ve been engaged in an interesting debate about whether you can have only doorstep bread, or if it also refers to toast. Weighty stuff, I’m sure you’ll agree. Where Facebook outstrips the art of conversation, however, is no one can check precisely how off the cuff your witty remark is. Whereas, in an actual conversation, if you don’t make an immediate response, the moment has gone, Facebook gives you much more time. For all anyone knows, you have just seen the statement to which you are responding with all the panache of Oscar Wilde. You certainly haven’t spent the previous half hour looking up ancient quotations and then amending them to suit your cause, or double checking your stuff on Wikipedia. But it’s still better than posting a picture of a cat.

A young Manx singer has been lined up for a prime support slot at the Tenors Un Limited show in the Villa Marina. Christian Cooper, 13, will open up for the stars at the May 9 show. Achievement just a few days after the contest telling me I’d been invited to sing at the Tenors Un Limited show it was a real shock. ‘I was told that Junior Achievement forwarded a video of my performance at The Next Big Thing to Tenors Un Limited and they chose me to be part of the show, so I’m really looking forward to it, though I’m a bit nervous too.’ Ballakermeen High School student Christian said: ‘The Gaiety audience was my biggest so far but later this year I’m going to Germany with the school to perform the lead role in Oliver! when we’ll be in front of about 2000 people.’ Tenors Un Limited’s Jem Sharples said: ‘It’s great to be able to encourage young singers. Christian’s enthusiasm and love of singing is obvious and being a local lad makes it even better. Epic staging of the Manx Passion An ambitious venture to stage the Passion over a series of venues for Easter is about to take place.

The Manx Passion is a massive undertaking and is the biggest showpiece event so far of Island of Culture 2014.

The Manx Passion has been adapted from the York, Chester and Wakefield cycle of Mystery Plays by Christopher Denys, former principal of the Bristol Old Vic Theatre Company.

Director Jan Palmer Sayer said: ‘The Manx Passion is a unique event and a huge challenge. The key is to knit a community together, not just the actors,

Jan said: ‘Some of the audience will be there for the spiritual experience but I would like to think others will come because the Manx Passion is an extraordinary piece of community touring theatre suitable for the whole family, a dramatisation of Bible highlights, from The Creation to Noah’s Flood.’ The performances take place over a

week, starting on April 13 and leading up to the climax on Good Friday (April 18). Nearly all of it will take place in the open air, no matter what the weather.

Mulch ado about Gardening Every spring sees a hive of activity among gardeners as they mulch away, lovingly preparing their ground ready for this year’s eye-catching blooms or mouth-watering bumper crops. But for many this year, they may be looking in dismay at the condition of their waterlogged soil. The consequence of the extreme rainfall has hit many hard, with commercial growers and gardeners scratching their heads at the enormity of the damage. For some, their already heavy clay soil has been further compacted leaving poor drainage and the likelihood of root disease. The lighter, sandy soils around our coastline have seen serious erosion with some extreme cases, such as in Castletown, having lost entire coastal gardens to the battering (ravages) of the sea earlier this year. The damage goes much further than the eye can see. Nutrients are washed away, plants are starved of oxygen as the soil’s air pockets fill with water, the worm population and other natural beneficial activity, as well as plants themselves, effectively drown and the long-term balance compromised. If left, the poor drainage alone will prevent root growth and encourage root disease and later, during the warmer weather, plants will even be more prone to drought stress. This year we’ll be thinking of ‘repair’ as much as ‘prepare’ when we are mulching. Normally we think of mulching as conditioning the soil,

suppressing the weeds and retaining the moisture ready for the warmer weather. But to combat all this damage it is vital to both replace and repair the structure of the soil and its nutrients – the plants’ food source. A high level of organic matter is what’s needed. Easy, but do all products deliver everything you need? Do you really want to be adding expensive in-organic food supplements or doubling up on the work? No, and you don’t need to. There are products out there that can do the whole job naturally. Mushroom compost is a great example and we’re fortunate to have an all

year round supply from the mushroom farm on the Island. Growing in popularity, it is high in demand as it not only delivers on the high organic matter content and has the advantage of being weed seed free but it also has packs a punch with great nutrient contents too. Many who use it brag of bigger and better crops but, most importantly, that their soil structure is much improved in the longer term. Fortunately for us gardeners they’ve kept their prices low so it’s also very affordable and there are some great discounts the more you buy. Maybe that’s why Monty Don was heard raving about it recently!
