A WORD FROM THE EDITOR I take this opportunity to express our hope that you and your loved ones are getting the support you need in light of current events. There are many new initiatives and support networks forming every day which we will help publicise for as long as necessary. We will use social and digital media to support those which haven’t made it into this edition as well as to provide updates about cancelled events and any other information which our readers and advertisers will find useful. We know this magazine is a valued source of social, political and commercial information and we are working on plans to support our customers, partners and readers in the coming weeks and months. Many businesses are adapting to this challenging environment by changing their offer or by offering additional services, such as home deliveries or take-away services. We all know how important it is to support our local economy by shopping local and employing the services of local tradespeople/businesses, but it has never been quite so important.

Our sales manager and his team are working with our customers to overcome likely challenges, sharing ideas and expertise which will enable them to communicate with you throughout this crisis and help secure their place in the market going forward. There are numerous ways in which we and our group partners (Grapevine, Boswell Office Supplies and Colourplan Print) intend to communicate with readers and customers. Please join or like us on the following platforms so we can stay in touch: Instagram: mansionhousepublishing / grapevinelive Twitter: @InTouchEast / @grapevinelive Facebook: Mansion House Publishing / Grapevine Live www.keepingintouchwith.co.uk / www.GrapevineLive.co.uk And don’t forget to download the GrapevineLive app. Grá go Deo, Sharon and the In Touch team

It’s still possible to do so and we’ll be helping our customers to maintain contact with you using all available mediums (print, digital and social) throughout this ever-evolving scenario. Every decision we are making right now is considered and measured to ensure we are able to continue to support our customers; after all, it is they who enable us to publish 19 magazines every month and we will be a critical source of local information, a vital link within and beyond local communities, until this becomes a distant memory. We have responded day by day to event cancellations but as many more are likely to be cancelled or postponed, please do check before you travel. We shall announce additional cancellations as we receive them so do stay in contact between now and the next deadline. And as new initiatives take shape, please let us know so we can help spread the word.

HADLEIGH & BOXFORD PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP Reaching out to the vulnerable people in the community who are selfisolating or cautious about going outside. Good hand hygiene and good respiratory hygiene is the message of the day. But how do we respond, beyond the government guidelines, within our communities? Here are a few ideas: Look out for neighbours who might need to self-isolate. Could you offer help to ensure that they get the supplies that they need? Look out for elderly and vulnerable members of the community in particular. Do they know where to turn, in the event that they need support? Could you create a buddy system keeping in contact with each other by phone? Look out for those fearful of coming out of their homes. Could you offer to ring for a chat? Look out for those you know working in health and social care and who will come under increased pressure. Most importantly, look after yourself and follow the official advice given on: www.gov.uk / www.nhs.uk For information about the PPG, visit: www.hadleighhealth.co.uk/patient-participation-group

NEWS HADLEIGH SHOW It is with great regret that the committee of the Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association, and the organisers of the Hadleigh Show, have to announce that the 181st Hadleigh Show, due to take place on 16 May 2020 is cancelled. The organising committee feel that it would be irresponsible of us to encourage people into large gatherings until the threat of COVID-19 is under control and manageable. We are obviously hugely disappointed not to be able to showcase agriculture, rural activities and put on a lovely day out for our incredible supporters but we feel in the current situation this is unavoidable. We will be working closely with our exhibitors, trade stand holders, sponsors and visitors to ensure that the cancellation process is as smooth as possible but ask for understanding and patience in, what is, an unprecedented situation. We are enormously grateful, and humbled, by the huge levels of support we have received from all of our exhibitors and traders who had, once again, given us a fully subscribed show and we would like to publicly thank all of them for such fantastic support for this year’s show and for past and future shows.

SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM It has been another busy month. I have been out in the community meeting lots of people, attending community cafes and running Coffee with a Copper in Hadleigh which was well attended. As we get into better weather my engagement calendar is getting full so if you would like me to attend one of your community events or clubs please contact me to arrange. As I write the country is dealing with and rending to effects of Coronavirus. Please look after each other and rally to those who may need more support and help. News in the area regarding crime Due to a spike in shed and out building burglaries, I have asked one of our crime officers for advice on securing these buildings. Ensure that the building is in good condition and look to improve its security by: • Fixing mesh or bars on the inside of windows. • Fitting good locks to all doors. Padlocks should be at least 6cm/2.5ins wide, hardened steel, have at least five pins and be a close shackled type (reduces risk of being forced).

We will be back to the planning stages for the Hadleigh Show to be back in 2021 and will be working with all of our incredible supporters and wish all of them a safe 2020.

• Fittings should be bolted through the door and reinforced at the back with a steel plate or washer; hasps should have concealed screws.

For any further enquiries please contact secretary@hadleighshow.co.uk but please understand that this will be under immense pressure in the initial stages of the show cancellation process. All information, as it becomes available, will be posted on social media, our website and via email to all contacts on our system.

• Fitting additional locks up-and-over garage doors. • Considering an alarm, either a battery operated text alarm or upgraded house alarm which includes the shed or garage. • It is important to remember to use locks at all times, even if you are at home. • Always keep keys safe and out of sight. • Secure all items that could be easily removed; they could be used to break into your house. • Security-mark property such as lawn mowers, furniture and tools with your postcode and advertise the fact that they are marked. Keep a note of serial, make and model numbers. • Photograph of any valuable garden ornaments. If they are stolen, the police can circulate the photographs to help with identification. • Ensure that bicycles are security marked and have additional devices to secure them inside the shed or garage. • Consider installing security lights to both illuminate your garden and deter thieves. Sensors can be bought which switch light on when a moving body is detected; also available are sodium tubes that switch on automatically once it becomes dark

Do you want to get involved in your local community? Do you enjoy being active, especially riding a bike? Do you enjoy working with people of all abilities? If so, then BikeActive needs you! We started life over 20 years ago as BikeAbility Ipswich providing cycling for adults with a wide range of disabilities and come rain or shine we still do!

• Keep shrubs, bushes, hedges, etc. cut back as they can provide a hiding place for thieves. • Check that all boundary fences, walls and gates are in good repair. A solid barrier is an excellent deterrent to the opportunist thief. • Ask your neighbours to keep an eye on your garden day and night and do the same for them. • Contact the police immediately if you see anything suspicious.

We believe we are the only special needs cycling project in this country that rides on-road every Friday, enjoying the superb countryside around Alton Water and the surrounding villages. All bikes are provided.

Please call 101 to make contact with police in the event of non-emergency. Reports can also be made online. In an emergency always call 999

NEWS DO YOU KNOW WHAT DESTITUTION IS? Destitution is poverty so extreme that you lack the means to provide for yourself. Is that you or do you know someone in that situation? Sadly, many people today are experiencing destitution and this is the experience of one third of CAP clients when in debt and financial difficulty. Before approaching CAP, the percentage of clients who could not afford to pay for their provisions was as follows: 89% meals; 80% heating; 61% clothing; 37% lighting; 34% toiletries; 9% shelter. For 24 years Christians Against Poverty (CAP) has helped a total of over 20,000 people across the UK get out of debt, turn their lives around and live debt free. Many of these have been destitute for a variety of reasons before they turned to CAP. For the last two years we have been operating the CAP debt counselling service in Felixstowe. CAP is unique in the service it offers. Not only do we visit clients in their own home, but we offer one-to-one support for the whole period that the client is in debt. All visits are conducted by our trained CAP debt coach accompanied by a ‘befriender’ who is able to support the client through their journey to become debt free. Usually our debt counselling starts with three visits: • On the first visit we introduce the service and explain who CAP are and how we operate. • On the second visit we collect all the information needed to enable the qualified debt advisors in Bradford (CAP head office) to prepare an affordable budget the client can live on and suggest the right path for getting out of debt. Every client’s circumstances are different, so the debt advisers work hard to suggest the right option(s) for that particular client. • On the third visit we go through CAP’s suggested budget together with the options to get out of debt. The client is then totally free to choose whether or not to work with CAP on their preferred option. Do you need CAP’s help or know someone who does? The CAP service is totally free; just call 0800 328 0008 to arrange that first appointment and step out on the path to becoming debt free.

CITIZENS ADVICE SUDBURY & DISTRICT I’ve got tickets to an event next week and I’m not sure what will happen in light of Coronavirus. I bought the tickets for myself and a few friends, one of them is worried about attending. What can I do? Ticket holders who change their mind about going to see an event, such as a concert that is still going ahead, have no legal right to a refund. If, however, the event is cancelled, your refund rights will depend on how you bought the ticket. If you bought your ticket from an official seller and the organiser cancels, moves, reschedules, or makes the event behind closed doors, you should get a refund. This is the case even if it is cancelled due to a government ban on large events. The official seller is the best person to ask about how to get a refund. If you bought your ticket from a ticket-reselling website, refunds will depend on the site’s terms and conditions. If you bought from a private seller and the event is cancelled or rescheduled then it is unlikely you will be able to recover your money. We recommend you contact the seller. If you’re due to go to an event, keep checking the information from the official seller or organiser to ensure you’re up to date. Unfortunately we’ve found that in these situations scammers prey on those who are affected. If your event is cancelled and people or companies offer their services to try to recover money on your behalf, make sure that you’re looking out for the signs of a potential scam: www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/scams/check-if-somethingmight-be-a-scam *Please note we are no longer seeing clients face to face until further notice* If you need help or information about a problem you can telephone Sudbury & District Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 or 0300 330 1151 from Monday to Thursday between 10am and 3pm. Alternatively email advice@sudburycab.org.uk or visit: www.sudburycab.org.uk

OUT & ABOUT

2020 SUFFOLK WALKING FESTIVAL Have you ever crafted in the wild, enjoyed baking over a campfire or foraged for a cream tea? If not, then this year’s Suffolk Walking Festival is for you! The 13th Suffolk Walking Festival launches on Saturday 9 May with over 120 guided walks and countryside events over three weeks across the county. This year also sees plenty of brand new events including Castle on the Hill celebrating Ed Sheeran’s favourite castle, a fun photography scavenger hunt in Orford and a spooky day head hunting in Ipswich. The event finishes at the end of half-term week withplenty of familyfriendly activities. Here are just a few events to whet your appetite. A sell-out every year is Walk n’ Water, a short walk and boat trip along the River Stour in Sudbury with a free hot drink at the end. RSPB Minsmere is one of the most special places in Suffolk, famous around the world for its wildlife. Surprising Spring Wildlife shows off the site, introducing you to some of its iconic species. Another icon of Suffolk is Orford Ness and Walk with a Shepherd and a Sheepdog is a guided walk by Kite, the sheepdog who manages the island’s very own herd of sheep. It’s a very fun walk and a joy to watch Kite in action. Campfire Make and Bake at Thornham Walks brushes up your whittling skills before making damper bread over an open fire in the woods. Family Wild Crafts at Brandon Country Park lets you get crafty in the woods as you collect natural materials such as sticks, leaves and rushes to make, and then keep, your creations. And The Nasty Normans at Clare Country Park is a fun take on the history of the Norman Conquests with an actor narrating the story as you’ve never heard before! The festival kicks off at Clare Country Park on Saturday 9 May and runs for three weeks until 31 May. See the full programme and purchase tickets at: www.suffolkwalkingfestival.co.uk

LIBRARY LIFE: INTERESTING TIMES We find ourselves living in interesting times. At the time of writing this piece, the libraries are still open but by the time it is published, well noone can say for certain at what stage we will be. But, whether our physical buildings remain open or not, we are still there for you, providing, entertainment, knowledge and information. We have adapted over the years to changing times so if you find you have to stay at home, we can still be a community together. From the comfort of your home you can access e-books, audio books, films and music – all with your library card; just visit the Suffolk Libraries website to explore all the options. With fiction from all genres, you can find valuable escapism when things feel difficult. Non-fiction provides opportunities to keep feeling active of mind and learning, from new craft skills, to history, nature or how to look after your peace of mind. One of the real jewels of reading though is that it has been proven to increase empathy as it builds the ability to see things from different points of view. These are, indeed, interesting times and under such pressures humanity can either be found wanting or flourish but I like to think that most of us will take the time to think of others as much as ourselves. Whatever the coming weeks bring we will continue to provide the best service we can in whatever way is possible to our communities. You can keep up-to-date with the latest news by visiting www.suffolklibraries.co.uk and we’re always happy to keep in touch via social media: Facebook: @HadleighLibrarySuffolk Twitter: @HadleighLibrary Instagram: @hadleigh.library

OUT & ABOUT HADLEIGH VISITOR INFORMATION

STOUR VALLEY U3A 30TH ANNIVERSARY

In addition to our Visit Hadleigh website we know visitors value a place for visitor information, face-to-face local knowledge when they arrive or indeed want to think about where to go next.

A speaker meeting took place on Wednesday 11 March when master beekeeper Jeremy Quinlan talked about the contest between bees and flowers to gain benefit from the relationship.

If you want to develop your communication skills and love your town, why not consider becoming part of the team of visitor information providers? A training workshop will be arranged to help you provide this service along with ongoing support.

Events and diary dates • Monster Walk on 3 June as part of U3A National Volunteer Day • 30th birthday party on 5 August at Constable Hall, East Bergholt

For full details and to register your interest please contact Jane Snowdon at Visit Hadleigh Voluntary Enterprise: 01473 824957 / snowdonjane@hotmail.co.uk

HADLEIGH GARDEN CLUB Unfortunately, following government advice re the Coronavirus, the garden club will not be meeting this month (April) and for the next few months. As soon as we are back in business we will let you know – watch this space! Meanwhile take care and hopefully we will all be able to get together again later in the year, thank you. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

Interest Groups • Our three and five mile walking groups set off each month to keep fit using footpaths. A 10 mile walking group is coming soon. • Members of our European travel group are going to Dubrovnik, Puglia and India during the next 12 months. • The very popular garden visits group has organised coach outings to many parts of the eastern region over the summer months. There are 40 learning and activity groups for members to join. Our main purpose is to encourage lifelong learning for those who are no longer in full time employment and emphasis is always placed on making learning active and fun as well as helping in developing friendships. Our members are drawn from communities in the lower Stour Valley and adjacent areas including Brantham, Capel St Mary, Dedham, East Bergholt, Holbrook, Lawford, Manningtree, Raydon, & Stratford St Mary. We have 400 members with room for more and membership is only £12 per annum. Contact our membership secretary, Val Pretty, via the website. Coffee Grinders meet from 10am-noon on the last Friday of each month at The Lambe School, Gaston Street, East Bergholt CO7 6SD. This meeting especially welcomes new members and gives all members the opportunity to meet the activity group leaders and the committee while enjoying a cup of coffee. BOSWELL OFFICE SUPPLIES: WE KNOW OUR BUSINESS – AND YOURS In a global marketplace isn’t it good to know there’s a local supplier with a long history which has not only survived in an increasingly competitive industry, but has secured its place as a preferred supplier based on quality of service and value for money. Boswell Office Supplies has a long history and still operates out of Ipswich as part of Mansion House Group. Led by Jon Emerson (pictured left), the current team of four has nigh on 100 years of industry insight and knowledge which customers can access. “Knowledge is everything in this industry,” explains Jon. “Because we know our product range intimately we can quickly identify what our customers need and provide solutions when a specific need exists. For example, we don’t just deliver office furniture – we can put it together too!” In fact the very term ‘office supplies’ is somewhat inadequate to describe what Boswell can offer. Of course they provide every variation of every office product you can envision, from paperclips to chairs, but the product range has expanded in recent years to include furniture, shredders, print consumables, first aid kits, arts and crafts supplies, clothing, computer software, cleaning materials and equipment, even catering supplies. If it’s something you need in your office, village hall, community centre, sports club or school, you’ll probably find it at Bowell Office Supplies. “We relish the opportunity to find the best products for customers,” says Jon who runs the office with Mark (pictured right). “Not many people understand our passion for office products. In fact we talk in code a lot of the time, using reference numbers we’ve stored in our memories over many years. ”

10

Jon and Mark are always available to take calls but more and more customers order online, a simple process once an account has been set up. It’s easy to find specific products on the website where special offers are regularly highlighted. As part of Mansion House Group, which also includes Mansion House Publishing, Colourplan Print and Musical Marketing, Boswell can provide a range of additional add-on services including a full print service, advertising in any one of several regular publications and a range of online/social media marketing options. “We are stronger and more competitive as a group,” explains Jon. “Many of our customers come to us for a mix of products or services, knowing we have their best interests at heart but also because it’s easier, quicker and cheaper to deal with a single supplier. Many Colourplan Print customers have become Boswell customers and vice versa. Trust is key to our success and the fact that Andy, our main delivery driver, and Nick, our field sales operative, are well-liked and knowledgeable doesn’t hurt either.” So whether you need a regular supply of essential products, clothing or office furniture for new staff, first aid kits for staff on the move or any one of the thousands of products Jon and this team can source on your behalf, check out the website or give the office a call if you have a specific enquiry. “Buy locally, use our local knowledge and get your office supplies delivered right into your office or school,” says Jon. “We are good at what we do because we love what we do. For us it’s personal and that’s why so many of our customers have been with us for many years. We look forward to working with you too.” www.boswellofficesupplies.co.uk 01473 212000 / officesupplies@boswell.co.uk

OUT & ABOUT / SPORT ROBIN’S NEWS

SUFFOLK ROCKETS NETBALL CLUB

Baby Bears We invited parents and carers to come into the baby room on World Book Day. It was a lovely opportunity for parents to see their children at nursery and to observe the routine and interactions within the room. We hope to offer more sessions like this as it really strengthens the bond between home and nursery.

On 7 March our adult 1st Team competed in the Suffolk County Tournament. This was our first time at this competition and the ladies did great to finish third. The competition was extremely experienced and strong, but they played some very impressive netball. If you are an experienced netball player looking to join a new club, please email us as we are looking for players who are experienced at playing in high divisions in local leagues.

Toddling Tigers Tigers have been very active, pretending to be pirates and digging for treasure using spoons and other utensils and searching for treasure on the field. We also experienced snow for the first time at Forest School; we loved running through it and trying to catch the snow on our tongues. The Tigers have also been practising their fine motor skills to peel their own snack. It has been lovely to hear them talking about how it feels and smells. Gruffalos We had a wonderful time on World Book Day. The children brought in a favourite book from home. It was lovely to watch and hear the children talking so excitedly about their books with their friends. We use books as inspiration for the invitations to learning that we set up and felt strongly that the focus of our World Book Day celebrations should be about books rather than dressing up. The children responded to this as we hoped they would and were inspired by the books to become explorers, artists, illustrators and chefs. Imaginations truly inspired by the wonder of a story. Forest School How do children learn about the weather if they don’t have the opportunity to feel it or see it from beyond the window? At Forest School we firmly believe that children need to have hands-on learning experiences to understand what weather terms truly mean. We allow time to actually experience these terms so that when they hear the words, or come to read and write then, they have an understanding of what they mean. No matter the weather outside, we make the most of the learning opportunities the weather gives us. We wrap up well and go outside to ‘play’ and we always have a weather song to sing. If you would like further information about Robin’s Childcare, please contact Emma: 01473 310767/ info@robinschildcare.co.uk

We are excited to announce our new netball session, BEE Netball, starting September 2020. BEE Netball is all about friendship, inclusion, fair play and playing together. It’s not about how good a player is; it’s about how hard they try to ‘bee’. Bees themselves exemplify many of the values that netball instils; they are active, hand working, have a real sense of belonging, and that’s exactly what we hope our own Bees (young players) develop as they are introduced to our fantastic sport! BEE Netball is open to School Years 3-6 who are new/quite new to netball. We will be arranging a taster session in the summer. If you would like your daughter to take part please email us and we will put you on our mailing list. If you have a daughter in School Years 5-6 who you feel is more experienced, we do have sessions for players who need more advanced training, so again please do get in touch. We continue to have our teenies sessions (School Years 4-6 will become BEE Netball in September), junior sessions (School Years 6-11) and adult netball for ages 16 plus (Back to Netball, Walking Netball and experienced adults). We currently have some spaces open in all age groups if your daughter is interested in junior netball, and we always invite new adult members to join us. Due to the Coronavirus all sporting activities have been suspended. We have had to cancel training but we still welcome enquiries. Please follow us on social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) for club updates and to see our coaches providing free fitness and netball skills videos you can use at home! HADLEIGH UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB It’s not the best season in the world of non-league football. Several games have already been postponed and it’s impossible to tell when, or if, remaining league and cup games will be played.

After several postponed games, the U18s did finally get a match against Needham Market at home in the U18 Mid-week Cup, Unfortunately, after taking the lead, Needham bounced back to win 4-1.

The 1st Team did get a well-earned draw in a league match, before losing 5-0 to Lowestoft in a Suffolk Premier Cup quarter-final. It wasn’t a bad result considering Lowestoft play two divisions higher and as they scored all their goals in the first half we held them to nil-nil in the second half!

The Vets have seen some mixed results but the one to note is their superb 3-2 win over Woodbridge on penalties to go through to the final of the Veteran Seniors Cup. We play in Division 3 of the Norfolk & Suffolk Vets League while Woodbridge plays in the Premier Division. This shows how well the lads have progressed but we have no idea when this final will be played

The Reserves lost their last match at home to Woodbridge in a Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup quarter final. After taking the lead, Woodbridge levelled to see a half time score of 1-1. Woodbridge took the lead in the second half but we got back on level terms to see the full score 2-2. Unfortunately we lost the penalty shoot-out 4-3. March 18 would have been an opportunity to gain some silverware in the final of the Chell Trophy but this match, like so many others, has been put on hold.

A Good Perspective I was recently given a new cardigan. I wanted to thank the sender who lived away so I got my wife to take a photo of me wearing it. I was disappointed with the first photo – it was a chunky cardigan which made me look a bit fat, and the angle of the photo gave me a big head! The second photo was better (but far from flattering) and went with a thank you note. I remember going into a house of mirrors and seeing myself and others through distorting mirrors. Some making you short and fat, others tall and thin and with kinks in the mirrors, lots of other distortions. These days you don’t need to go to a house of mirrors as there are multiple mobile apps which create the same effect. It can be a lot of fun, but it can also be destructive of relationships if we send some images to people who have low self-image. They already feel unattractive and sometimes worthless. They don’t need that message reinforced by distorted images. In contrast others have an inflated image of themselves that their ego is in danger of bursting. Often we are unaware of the difference between the illusion of our image in our minds and the reality of how others see us. In my landlady’s house when I was a student, she had mirrors above the fireplace in the lounge and dining room, there were mirrors in the hallways and bathroom and the bedrooms had wardrobes with full length mirrors. You couldn’t get away from images of yourself. Because we don’t have that number of mirrors, I was slightly shocked by the unflattering photo image of me. I believe God wants us to have a good perspective on ourselves, not an inflated view nor a devalued view. God wants us to know we are created in his image, he loves us as we are, we are a work in progress, not yet perfect. He wants us to be open to be transformed by his love and his grace and to value other people, also created in his image, whether they recognise it or not. Each of us is valued, none of us are perfect and all are redeemable. Don’t build yourself up, don’t do yourself down. Be the child of God that you are, beautiful for God.
