There are many new initiatives and support networks forming every day which we will help publicise for as long as necessary. We will use social and digital media to support those which haven’t made it into this edition as well as to provide updates about cancelled events and any other information which our readers and advertisers will find useful. Every decision we are making right now is considered and measured to ensure we are able to continue to support our customers; after all, it is they who enable us to publish 19 magazines every month and we will be a critical source of local information, a vital link within and beyond local communities, until this becomes a distant memory. We have responded day by day to event cancellations but as many more are likely to be cancelled or postponed, please do check before you travel. NEWS

JODY RUNS LONDON MARATHON TO SUPPORT HEADWAY SUFFOLK Jody Smith is running her first London Marathon (now taking place on Sunday 4 October) to raise money for Headway Suffolk to thank the charity for their support of her father Gary following a stroke. Gary, from Felixstowe, was 57 and working for Ipswich Crown Court when he suffered a stroke in January 2017, which left him with difficulties with his speech (apraxia), balance and movement and cognitive functioning, as well as right-sided weakness. Gary spent three months in hospital and underwent intensive rehabilitation as his family rallied round to support him and found the help of Headway Suffolk a lifeline. “Life changed massively,” said Jody. “Dad went from working full-time to having carers four times a day. When he got home from hospital everything was different and chucked up in the air. He lost most of his speech, vision and hearing. He also lost mobility in the right side of his body and the use of his right arm. “It’s taken until now to get his seizures under control and the medications stable. It affected the whole family. I had counselling at Headway and the brain injury courses were amazing. They made it easy to take in and understand. We learned so much. You don’t realise the depths of the brain.” Gary started attending Headway’s rehab hub in Ipswich one day a week and soon increased it to two. He’s now a great encourager of others and in December he was recognised for his progress and inspirational attitude at the charity’s annual awards dinner. Jody said: “Headway is a home from home and it helps him massively with his apraxia and cognitive issues. It’s very important for his wellbeing and socialising with others. It’s a big part of his life. He loves Headway and the friendships and helping others. He’s happy when it’s relaxed with no background noise or pressure. He’s come on so far. He’s doing really well. He has had to learn to adapt and this has been hard, as well as accepting, I’m so proud of my dad’s attitude and progress to never give up and stay positive!” At the awards dinner, Gary gave a speech with the support of rehab worker Katie Bird: “Thank you for all the help at Headway. My speech has improved a lot. My confidence has grown. I have learnt a lot. I’m very grateful for the support and help.” Jody lives in West Bergholt and owns Feathers Hair Salon in Witham. She was chosen by Headway Suffolk as their London Marathon charity ballot runner after taking part in Headway’s Cycle Ride and Walk in 2018 and in the London Big Half marathon last year. Jody said: “I’m nervous but I’m looking forward to it. I felt honoured

4

to be asked to run for Headway Suffolk as it means a lot. It’s important because, unlike big charities, you can actually see where the money is going and people sponsoring at the salon can see that. “People open up in the salon and talk a lot about life and you share stories. When I talk about Dad they can see his photos on the mirror. I was able to recommend Headway to someone looking for support. Headway Suffolk has helped my dad, family and myself so much in his rehabilitation and holds a place very close to our hearts. We are truly grateful for all the help and support we have received.” Jody started training in October and is part of Jogging Made Easy (JME) Colchester every Sunday. She hopes to run the marathon in under five hours. As well as Jody, Gary has rock solid support from his two other children, Rebecca and Ashley, (divorced) wife Pauline and grandsons Noah (5) and Max (8). David Crane, Headway Suffolk’s communications and marketing officer, said: “We are so proud of how far Gary has come with his recovery. He is a huge inspiration and positive role-model for us all, especially those who have gone through a life-changing event like a brain injury, stroke or neurological condition. “We are very thankful to Jody for her passionate support of Headway Suffolk and we are thrilled she is running her first London Marathon while representing us. Her dad Gary will be her biggest supporter cheering her on every step of the way.” Jody has already smashed her £1,000 fundraising target (with gift aid) but wants to raise even more money for Headway Suffolk. Her page is: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/constancefield Headway Suffolk is a registered charity that supports adults with brain injury, stroke and neurological conditions and their families through an extensive range of rehabilitation and therapy services. Brain injury can affect every aspect of who we are and its physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioural effects can have devastating consequences for individuals and their families. According to statistics by Headway, the brain injury association, there were 3,201 admissions (8.7 per day) to hospital in Suffolk with a brain injury in 2016-17. Stroke was the second most prevalent cause after head injury with 1,215 (657 male, 558 female). For your brain to function, it needs a constant blood supply, which provides vital nutrients and oxygen to the brain cells. A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off and brain cells are damaged or die.

VILLAGE PRAM RACE AND FAMILY ACTIVITY DAY The East Bergholt Village Pram Race will take place this year on Monday 25 May. This year the Pram Race will be hosted by The Hare and Hounds on Heath Road. There will also be a family activity day at the Constable Memorial Hall and the field at Gandish Road. The day will provide fun and entertainment for all ages. Keep a look out for posters around the village for updates.

TREASURER NEEDED AT THE CONSTABLE MEMORIAL HALL The Constable Memorial Hall is an important community facility within East Bergholt and, after many years’ service, our treasurer is standing down. We are dismayed but very grateful for the work he has done (and is doing). Everyone deserves a break sometime! We are looking for someone to fill his shoes in this important role. Alas, there is no financial reward, but if you have any experience that could be used to fulfil the role we would be delighted to hear from you. Initially you will be working alongside the present treasurer so you will not be thrown in the deep end! The committee works well as a team, with the shared aim of promoting, improving and developing this thriving community facility at Gandish Road. Take a look at our website where you will get a better idea of the facility we operate and the range of bookings and users we have. If you would like to visit the hall and discuss the role of treasurer with one of us, please do get in touch. We will be delighted to hear from you. All we ask is that you are over the age of 18 years and have relevant experience. Most importantly, we are looking for someone with a great sense of community spirit and a friendly, helpful work ethic. If interested, please call us on 07783 682024 or 01206 298638 and ask to speak to Val. Alternatively email: bookings@constableHall.co.uk www.constablehall.co.uk

BRANTHAM AND EAST BERGHOLT RBL The Royal British Legion continues to support both serving and ex-servicemen in our community. Normally recognised in association with the Poppy Appeal and Remembrance Sunday, our activities and support are available to ex and current service personnel and their families all year round. The bulk of our membership is definitely in the category of ‘old servicemen’. Unfortunately this means that we are losing our members as they pass away, and while we do all we can to support the families left behind we are having to do so with an ever shrinking membership. Treasurer needed urgently While we are always seeking new members, we have unfortunately just lost our very competent treasurer. As with all organisations, but especially those with charitable status and a Royal Warrant, as is the case with the RBL, we need a replacement treasurer as soon as possible. We are looking for a volunteer from within the local community to enable us to continue to support ex-service personnel. If you can help and would like more information please contact me; your offer of help will be much appreciated. Hon Sec A John Hinton: 01206 298309 / Ajohn.hinton@btinternet.com

NEWS CONSTABLE COUNTRY MEDICAL PRACTICE Coronavirus Update The Coronavirus situation is changing daily. Please ensure you keep up to date with the situation nationally and locally and follow the latest advice from Public Health England at: www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19information-for-the-public Our top priority at the practice is to remain open. In order to do this, we are screening patients to ensure that no patient who has been to an affected area and has Coronavirus symptoms, comes to the practice. Even a suspected case will result in the practice closing temporarily and having to deep clean the building before it can be reopened. If the patient subsequently tests positive, all those who were in proximity to the patient (e.g. other patients in the waiting room or staff who spoke to the patient) will need to be traced, isolated and tested. It may seem that we are being over-cautious, but I hope patients can see that the impact of a patient attending the practice with suspected Coronavirus is not only disruptive, but will also prevent the practice from providing urgent health care to patients if we need to close. Please therefore be ultra-cautious. Follow advice from Public Health England and if you believe you may be at risk of contracting Coronavirus, stay at home and contact 111 for advice. Don’t come to the surgery. During this period we continue to offer as normal a service as possible. Our telephone call back service means that many medical issues can be dealt with over the phone. Please also use our eConsult service for any non-urgent issues. You can send an eConsult request any time of the day and we will respond within 48 hours. Thank you for your cooperation. Please see our website for latest advice and details of our eConsult service. Training Days Please note that the practice will be closed for staff training from 1pm on Thursday 2 April, Wednesday 4 May and Wednesday 10 June. On these afternoons the Capel St Mary building will be open to enable access to the pharmacy but reception will be closed. East Bergholt reception will be open. Please note that there will be no clinicians at either building after 1pm as they will be attending training off-site. Our phone lines will be closed for the afternoon. If you need medical assistance please contact 111. If your need is urgent then please dial 999 or attend your local A&E.

BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCILLOR JOHN HINTON The council has met and approved, not unanimously I hasten to add, the budget for 2020-2021. I happened to abstain as there was a proposal to take all the recommendations en block and thus no chance to change or disagree with any part. I still have major reservations over the use of a transformation fund which appears to be shorthand for squirrelling away funds to use without having to ask council. Any surpluses are placed in the fund which was originally used to ‘transform’ the workforce from two separate council workforces to one joined one. If we haven’t ‘transformed’ by now then we should sack the lot, including councillors, and start again! Normally surplus funds would be transferred to ‘reserves’ and any use of funds from there would have to be approved by full council. This mysterious fund seems like a way to subvert the possible objections of council to unplanned spending. I will keep fighting to have all surpluses put in reserves. I have had a response from our MP as to the meetings he had at the Four Sisters, but it didn’t help much. He is apparently going to write to the parish council as he regards my use of exclamation marks as aggressive!! Oops, that will create a bullying complaint. I recently sat down with the Infrastructure Delivery Plan which includes the news that Highways England are applying for funds in the next spending round (2020 to 2025) to sort out the problems. Unfortunately the decision was due from the Treasury in November 2019 and there was no mention of what happens to development utilising the junction if it’s not approved. We already have an approved development in Raydon where the bus service has recently been cancelled, thus isolating the village, so ‘sustainability’ takes on a potentially new meaning. Add to that the proposals in East Bergholt and Brantham and it will exacerbate an already major problem. We all had great hopes of Boris and his ‘levelling out’ of the country but no real news yet of what it holds for the East. Some MPs are very active in pushing forward proposals but not apparently on the A12. In the meantime, join the A12 with care (at least SCC are filling in the pot holes in the approaches North bound) and remember to wash your hands and keep yourself safe. Councillor John Hinton, East Bergholt Ward

Practice Manager Pete Keeble

SOME IMPORTANT MESSAGES FROM HEARTWATCH An Emergency Direct Line System has been installed above the defibrillator in the telephone box outside The Red Lion. In the case of a cardiac arrest or suspected cardiac arrest, instead of dialling 999 from a mobile/landline, press the Emergency System button and request the ambulance service. Inform them of the patient’s location and ask for the access code. Use the access code to open and remove the defibrillator from the cabinet. When opened and turned on, the defibrillator will give verbal instructions on using the defibrillator and doing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). Community defibrillators maintained by Heartwatch can be found: • In the telephone box outside the Red Lion, The Street, East Bergholt • Inside Old Hall, Rectory Hill, East Bergholt • On the wall of The Visitor’s Centre, Flatford • On the wall outside Constable Memorial Hall, Gandish Road, East Bergholt • On the wall outside the Clubhouse, the Grange Country Park, Straight Road, East Bergholt • On the wall outside “The Dicky” (The Royal Oak), East End Lane, East End • On the wall outside East End Butchers, Broom Knoll, East End • On the wall outside Chloes, Birch Drive, Brantham

www.keepingintouchwith.com/eastbergholt

• On the wall at Brantham Leisure Centre, New Village, Brantham • On the wall at Holton St Mary Village Hall, Hadleigh Road, Holton Charity Race Night on 15 February – a massive thank you to all those who came along on the night and to all the businesses, clubs and local people for their generous support with prizes, race sponsorships and horse ownership. We raised an amazing £1,623. Please consider joining us and becoming a member of the Heartwatch Community Responder Team. We know by the level of activity we have that there is a need for the service we provide to the village. We had 15 call-outs in January. The current team are either ageing, working full time or facing retirement due to ill health. We desperately need more responders. You may be unaware of us but ask your friends, family or neighbours who may have been unfortunate enough to have us call. We get to you first when an ambulance has been called for and can provide vital interventions while waiting for a paramedic or ambulance to arrive. Your village needs Heartwatch and you may be able to help – even if just for a few hours a week. You will be trained, equipped and supported. Contact Carol: 01206 298483.

Facing near-certain capture and a return to a life in servitude, she leaps into a dangerous fast-moving river – resolving that she’d rather be dead than a slave. Oscar nominated Cynthia Erivo plays Tubman in this spirited adventure film. “A rousing and powerful drama” (New York Times) Friday 1 May Knives Out (12A) 130 minutes When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. OUT & ABOUT STOUR VALLEY U3A

ROBIN’S NEWS

A speaker meeting took place on Wednesday 11 March when master beekeeper Jeremy Quinlan talked about the contest between bees and flowers to gain benefit from the relationship.

Baby Bears We invited parents and carers to come into the baby room on World Book Day to play and read with their children, chat to each other and the room leader and enjoy a picnic tea together. It was a lovely opportunity for parents to see their children at nursery and to observe the routine and interactions within the room. We hope to offer more sessions like this as it really strengthens the bond between home and nursery.

Events and diary dates • Monster Walk on 3 June as part of U3A National Volunteer Day • 30th birthday party on 5 August at Constable Hall, East Bergholt Interest Groups • Our three and five mile walking groups set off each month to keep fit using footpaths. A 10 mile walking group is coming soon. • Members of our European travel group are going to Dubrovnik, Puglia and India during the next 12 months. • The very popular garden visits group has organised coach outings to many parts of the eastern region over the summer months. There are 40 learning and activity groups for members to join. Our main purpose is to encourage lifelong learning for those who are no longer in full time employment and emphasis is always placed on making learning active and fun as well as helping in developing friendships. Our members are drawn from communities in the lower Stour Valley and adjacent areas including Brantham, Capel St Mary, Dedham, East Bergholt, Holbrook, Lawford, Manningtree, Raydon, & Stratford St Mary. We have 400 members with room for more and membership is only £12 per annum. Contact our membership secretary, Val Pretty, via the website. Coffee Grinders meet from 10am-noon on the last Friday of each month at The Lambe School, Gaston Street, East Bergholt CO7 6SD. This meeting especially welcomes new members and gives all members the opportunity to meet the activity group leaders and the committee while enjoying a cup of coffee. For updates visit the website. www.stourvalleyu3a.org.uk

Toddling Tigers Tigers have been very active, pretending to be pirates and digging for treasure using spoons and other utensils and searching for treasure on the field. We also experienced snow for the first time at Forest School; we loved running through it and trying to catch the snow on our tongues. The Tigers have also been practising their fine motor skills to peel their own snack. It has been lovely to hear them talking about how it feels and smells. Gruffalos March has been an exciting time of change. The children have been noticing the changes as spring is starting to appear and we have reflected this within their environment. We have added spring provocations and invitations to learning through books, spring flowers and branches of blossom to name a few. We had a wonderful time on World Book Day. The children brought in a favourite book from home. It was lovely to watch and hear the children talking so excitedly about their books with their friends. We use books as inspiration for the invitations to learning that we set up and felt strongly that the focus of our World Book Day celebrations should be about books rather than dressing up. The children responded to this as we hoped they would and were inspired by the books to become explorers, artists, illustrators and chefs. Imaginations truly inspired by the wonder of a story.

MANNINGTREE & DISTRICT PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We had two competitions in February, the first being a Landscape and Seascape print competition judged by Colin Westgate. This was well supported with a good number of wonderful images, one of which (Dark Descending by Richard Woollven) is shown here. Our PDI Weather competition on 27 February also attracted a large number of entries of which a good number were stormy scenes in line with our recent weather pattern. This was judged by Tony Bramley. April looks to be a busy month with a Close-Ups PDI competition on 9 April, the East Ipswich Camera Club Granville Foulger Trophy on 21 April, a talk by Liz Huxley on Wildlife of the Tendring Peninsula on 23 April and a talk entitled Ten Thousand Miles of Ocean with Sarah Kelman on 30 April. Meetings are held on the second, fourth and fifth Thursdays of the month. Please contact our secretary for details: 01206 393751 / madps@post.com www.manningtreeanddistrictphotographicsociety.co.uk

Forest School How do children learn about the weather if they don’t have the opportunity to feel it or see it from beyond the window? At Forest School we firmly believe that children need to have hands-on learning experiences to understand what weather terms truly mean. We allow time to actually experience these terms so that when they hear the words, or come to read and write then, they have an understanding of what they mean. The weather itself provides such a wide vocabulary; glistening, blustery and showery are just some of the words children hear in stories but what do they mean? What do snowflakes look like or taste like? What patterns and shapes can be found when Jack Frost visits? What is windy and how can we measure the wind speed? Why does the sun come out to play so we can play hide-andseek with our shadows or make rainbows to learn from? No matter the weather outside, we make the most of the learning opportunities the weather gives us. We wrap up well and go outside to ‘play’ and we always have a weather song to sing. OUT & ABOUT / CHURCH NEWS

BOSWELL OFFICE SUPPLIES: WE KNOW OUR BUSINESS – AND YOURS In a global marketplace, isn’t it good to know there’s a local supplier with a long history which has not only survived in an increasingly competitive industry, but has secured its place as a preferred supplier based on quality of service and value for money. Boswell Office Supplies has a long history and still operates out of Ipswich as part of Mansion House Group. Led by Jon Emerson (pictured left), the current team of four has nigh on 100 years of industry insight and knowledge which customers can access. “Knowledge is everything in this industry,” explains Jon. “Because we know our product range intimately we can quickly identify what our customers need and provide solutions when a specific need exists. For example, we don’t just deliver office furniture – we can put it together too!” In fact the very term ‘office supplies’ is somewhat inadequate to describe what Boswell can offer. Of course they provide every variation of every office product you can envision, from paperclips to chairs, but the product range has expanded in recent years to include furniture, shredders, print consumables, first aid kits, arts and crafts supplies, clothing, computer software, cleaning materials and equipment, even catering supplies. If it’s something you need in your office, village hall, community centre, sports club or school, you’ll probably find it at Bowell Office Supplies. “We relish the opportunity to find the best products for customers,” says Jon who runs the office with Mark (pictured right). “Not many people understand our passion for office products. In fact we talk in code a lot of the time, using reference numbers we’ve stored in our memories over many years. ”

Meeting at Old St Michael’s School on Trinity Road, Manningtree Learning from history: Coronavirus / Covid-19 There is a very real sense in which the spread of Covid-19, the newest of the Corona virus family, is not really all that new at all. Viruses have spread around the world before and we are indeed blessed to be better prepared than even before. Yet despite our technical expertise and worldwide collaboration, there are things we can learn from the experience of others down through history. I remember best the Black Death, as we now know it, though back then it was just the plague. I remember it because we had a brand-new history teacher at school who made the subject come alive by setting up a brilliant set of lessons where teams of six had to defeat the black death as it came to our village. I can still remember it now nearly 40 years later. Anyway, in 1348 the plague arrived in England and in a few months it had reached London. A year later it had covered the whole of the country. The spread was slower than today but the mortality higher; without our modern health care as many as 40 percent of the population died.

Jon and Mark are always available to take calls but more and more customers order online, a simple process once an account has been set up. It’s easy to find specific products on the website where special offers are regularly highlighted. As part of Mansion House Group, which also includes Mansion House Publishing, Colourplan Print and Musical Marketing, Boswell can provide a range of additional add-on services including a full print service, advertising in any one of several regular publications and a range of online/social media marketing options. “We are stronger and more competitive as a group,” explains Jon. “Many of our customers come to us for a mix of products or services, knowing we have their best interests at heart but also because it’s easier, quicker and cheaper to deal with a single supplier. Many Colourplan Print customers have become Boswell customers and vice versa. Trust is key to our success and the fact that Andy, our main delivery driver, and Nick, our field sales operative, are well-liked and knowledgeable doesn’t hurt either.” So whether you need a regular supply of essential products, clothing or office furniture for new staff, first aid kits for staff on the move or any one of the thousands of products Jon and this team can source on your behalf, check out the website or give the office a call if you have a specific enquiry. “Buy locally, use our local knowledge and get your office supplies delivered right into your office or school,” says Jon. “We are good at what we do because we love what we do. For us it’s personal and that’s why so many of our customers have been with us for many years. We look forward to working with you too.” www.boswellofficesupplies.co.uk 01473 212000 / officesupplies@boswell.co.uk

Such a terrible tragedy was still in the mind of many seven years later and one such was John Wycliffe. Already at Oxford when the plague arrived, he was deeply affected by what he had experienced; he was left with an abiding impression of the frailty and mortality of men and women, and especially himself. Comparing this with the love and Grace of God offered freely to him and discovered in the then Archbishop of Canterbury’s recent writings, Wycliffe became a Christian. He went on to translate the Bible into English believing that, “Englishmen learn Christ’s law best in English. Moses heard God’s law in his own tongue; so did Christ’s apostles”. Wycliffe found in Jesus Christ the comfort of knowing our Creator God who is all powerful over even pandemics of viruses. He said, “We are under God’s power, and we can do nothing but by the power of God, and woe shall hereafter be to us if we abuse this power”. If you would like to meet this Jesus you can, He still becomes friends with people today, as He did with Wycliffe. CHURCH NEWS BENEFICE OF EAST BERGHOLT & BRANTHAM Rector: The Rev Canon Stephne van der Toorn - 01206 392646 / revstephvdt@googlemail.com www.constablecountrychurches.co.uk RAMBLING RECTOR The trouble with writing about topical events is that by the time this is published it may all have blown over and you would be wondering even more than usual what I am going on about. But here goes anyway! I received a letter from Bishop Martin this morning exhorting us to take seriously our Christian duty to love and look after each other. In the current climate this involves using hand sanitisers before and after administering communion (getting it is a challenge and a half), receiving communion in one kind only (i.e. not the wine) and avoiding contact during the sharing of the Peace. He also points out that panic buying and hoarding are not part of the Christian character. Christians are called to behave differently. If I go out and clear the shelf of hand sanitiser or toilet paper I am depriving someone else who may need it more than I do. They may not have the money to be able to buy in advance, but only when needed, and my selfishness has exhausted the supply. Selfishness is not pretty whichever way you look at it. I am also baffled by the folk who felt it was OK to buy up the supplies and then make them available on the internet at four times the usual price. We are approaching the events of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Are they still relevant when so many people are fearful of being infected? Whose lives are being disrupted by quarantine and businesses adversely affected? Well, yes. Jesus offered his disciples the message that God cares enough to be involved in the hard parts of our lives as well as the happy ones. He reached out to someone who felt money was power and showed him that love is more powerful than money. He forgave his friends who abandoned him, and very deliberately refused the way of violence as a means to solving a problem. We are, he said, members of one body, and when one part hurts, we all hurt together. “Love one another as I have loved you,” he said. And then laid down his life for us. Resurrection life recognises the importance of the Other and wants only the best for our brothers and sisters. Thanks be to God. Happy Easter! CHURCH NEWS BRANTHAM & CAPEL METHODIST CHURCHES A Good Perspective I was recently given a new cardigan. I wanted to thank the sender who lived away so I got my wife to take a photo of me wearing it. I was disappointed with the first photo – it was a chunky cardigan which made me look a bit fat, and the angle of the photo gave me a big head! The second photo was better (but far from flattering) and went with a thank you note. I remember going into a house of mirrors and seeing myself and others through distorting mirrors. Some making you short and fat, others tall and thin and with kinks in the mirrors, lots of other distortions. These days you don’t need to go to a house of mirrors as there are multiple mobile apps which create the same effect. It can be a lot of fun, but it can also be destructive of relationships if we send some images to people who have low self-image. They already feel unattractive and sometimes worthless. They don’t need that message reinforced by distorted images. In contrast others have an inflated image of themselves that their ego is in danger of bursting. Often we are unaware of the difference between the illusion of our image in our minds and the reality of how others see us. In my landlady’s house when I was a student, she had mirrors above the fireplace in the lounge and dining room, there were mirrors in the hallways and bathroom and the bedrooms had wardrobes with full length mirrors. You couldn’t get away from images of yourself. Because we don’t have that number of mirrors, I was slightly shocked by the unflattering photo image of me. I believe God wants us to have a good perspective on ourselves, not an inflated view nor a devalued view. God wants us to know we are created in his image, he loves us as we are, we are a work in progress, not yet perfect. He wants us to be open to be transformed by his love and his grace and to value other people, also created in his image, whether they recognise it or not. Each of us is valued, none of us are perfect and all are redeemable. Don’t build yourself up, don’t do yourself down. Be the child of God that you are, beautiful for God.

or Low Sunday, was officially designated as Sunday of Divine Mercy by the late Pope St John Paul II on 30 April 2000 during the canonisation mass of St Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun and mystic whose apparitions earned her the title of Secretary of Divine Mercy.

SERVICES FOR APRIL 2020

The apparitions occurred in the 1930s and St Faustina following instructions sought to spread their message. This was successful and the Divine Mercy prayers and devotions are widely known and followed in many countries, especially amongst Poles and other Catholics. They are widely credited as being very efficacious and, of course, can be accessed over the internet, as can the story of the life and times of St Faustina. She died in October 1938 before the approaching world war but during the terrible events in neighbouring Ukraine and other parts of Soviet Russia.

A special VE Day celebration event will take place on Saturday 9 May at the Venture Centre to which we extend a very warm welcome. Please see special notices being circulated or visit our website. Our appointment as ambassadors in partnership with Our Daily Bread Ministries is already providing new contacts and enabling us to maintain regular provision of Christian resources alongside our own. We also welcome donations of second-hand items in support of our community outreach. The place of prayer is central to all our activities and our Meeting Point at the Venture Centre on the third Friday in each month at 10am is open to all. May God richly bless and keep you all in the awareness of His unending love.
