PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Hello everyone!

The last quarter has officially begun and we're still not done yet, with three more months, we still have three more members of the months, more socials to hold, more fundraisers to run and you guessed it, more service to give. It has been a great year thus far but we are hoping to make this last part our best yet, with more PB&Js to hold and more Feed the Kids coming up this week we are sure to have a very packed February. We plan on hosting our yearly Valentines bake sale this month, so be sure to help out during lunch! This week is also frog week. To be sure to get involved and help out in any way you can, You may earn hours by bringing supplies for our gift basket at this week's meeting. Again I would like to thank each and every one of you for making this year special, and let's end it on a high note together! Yours in Service,

Gavin Wilson

Why I wanted to "Make Keys" By: Daisy Hernandez, Secretary

Key Club was introduced to me during the commencement of my junior year through a Class Representative and initially intrigued me since I knew many people who were a part of the club and, in fact, many thought it was a club for making keys for some odd reason. I joined unaware of the opportunities that Key Club provided besides community service, such as the ability to meet all different kinds of people and the sense of community that the club fosters around helping others while having fun doing it. It is when I became a part of this organization that I realized the true uniqueness of it and how much good it is capable of bringing to everyone involved.

Unlike many school clubs that focus on a particular interest that a student might have, such as a certain career, hobby, or skill, Key Club is able to bring a variety of students together who are seeking to help out their school and community.. This mixing of characters has allowed me to meet and befriend people who have entirely different passions, opinions, and aspirations from my own and has expanded my mind in ways that cannot as easily be achieved through other clubs which have a more narrow focus. I have come to know many fellow volunteers and have been able to learn about

6

their vastly different life experiences which have shaped who they

have become and have given me the privilege of witnessing someone’s growth and maturation directly.

Key Club is also extremely unique in that it fosters a strong sense of community and belonging that is not often present in high school students and even in some adults. By actively helping one’s community and, more specifically, those in need within it, I have become aware of and am proud of the benevolence and compassion that my community possesses, something that I have never felt in any other club or organization that I have been a part of. One of the best parts of Key Club has been the combination of having fun with friends and other volunteers while simultaneously discovering one’s true passion for helping others. Never before in my life have I thought so much about my ability to make a positive impact on other people’s lives and how I could carry these aspirations into university and beyond until joining this service organization. Having the honor of being a Key Club Member has helped me grow and begin to think about my future in regards to how I can give to my community and help those within it who are less fortunate.

Getting Creative while Getting Together By: Kiana Busto, Sophomore Class Rep

Everybody needs an outlet to be creative and express themselves. After spending grueling hours learning, the mind needs time to relax and students especially should let their imagination let loose in a safe environment. In our key club we cater to the needs of our members while giving them an opportunity to serve and spread love and appreciation to the staff of our school. This January we took part in the C4C challenge which is a challenge for key clubs that we discovered on social media. The task was to do something to show appreciation for our nurses, janitors, and office staff. We decided to make thank you cards with words of appreciation and encouragement in them. After supplying everybody with the necessary art supplies we all got to work and in just one hour we made a little over forty beautifully decorated, and well thought-out cards. Every member that participated was able to make several cards within the time limit. On top of completing the challenge we were able to get service hours unleashing our creative side! A different exciting event to make use of our creativity that was exclusively for the upcoming year’s board members were discussing plans for next year to get our members as much involved as possible. Our current vice president and future president revealedÂ

to us part of her vision for the upcoming year to establish a friendly competitive nature and therefore motivate key clubbers to volunteer more. Her idea which was to implement a sort of clan based system reminiscent of the Hogwarts houses in Harry Potter was well received. The clan would consist of members and a set amount of officers. We would establish a system for gaining points and the goal would be to get the most points for the grand prize at the end of the year. Details still need to be worked out but it is nevertheless an exciting prospect!

Overall, Key Club has been a great safeplace to release my imagination in different forms from incorporating arts and crafts into service, to entertaining ideas for the future. Every meeting has been beneficial not only to the people we serve but also to me personally and I strongly believe that our members feel the same way!
