The principals of Vedic Architecture are applicable for the interior design of a house. For instance most often the houses we buy are not vaastu compliant and in such cases if we want to modify the rooms inside of the house, then we must consider the following: a. orientation of the home and the directions of sunlight and wind b. the position of the five elements and c. the ruling deity and graha

A combination of all of these items mentioned above will decide the function that can be alloted to that particular zone of the house. To examine whether the rooms inside a home are alloted to the correct function or not is to check the VaastuPurushMandala first and find out the functions suggested for each directions. Suppose you are buying a house and the rooms do not match with the suggested functions as given in a VaastuPurushMandala, in that case you might be able to modify the rooms somewhat to suit the allotted function as much as is possible. If however there is a closet or a bathroom in the zone where a living area is recommended, then there will be two options for the owners: either to seek yantra remedies or to remodel. Consulting an expert before finalizing the purchase of a home or in the event of interior decoration is however a much better choice. The table below enlists the functions for every direction and zones and might prove useful.

The following table will give you an insight regarding the appropriate functions that can be placed in the five zones of the VaastuPurushMandala. Let us also analyse the interior decoration for these zones.

North-East zone of compassion and equanimity:

North-East is the direction where the head of the VaastuPurusha rests and therefore this zone must be free from all heavy objects, plumbing, staircases or any unmovable heavy objects. North-East has the head of VaastuPurusha and therefore this corner of the building should never be chamfered, cut, or diminished in any manner. The best rooms recommended here is the living room, library, worship area, dining etc. North-East is ruled by Brihaspati, the Guru of Devatas and is therefore an ideal zone for worship, meditation, and activities of the mind. A garage is perfect for this zone because a car rolls in and out and is not a constant weight on the floor. A drop in the floor is permitted only in the North-East zone by Vaastushastra and therefore the garage must be in the North-East zone.

The water element is in North-East and water is nourishing, flows easily, is cooling and yet very strong. Water is the strongest of all elements and is the main source of life on earth. A water feature or a fish tank is ideal for this zone. On the site plan, a swimming pool or a water fountain should be placed in the northeast. The rooms in this zone have soothing qualities due to the early sun that is received in this zone and due to the prescence of water elelment. A living room in this zone will have a beautiful ambiance due to the energies of northeast and the quality of sunlight. Since the first rays of the sun come in from Northeast, large window

openings are higly recommended in this direction. Direct sunlight is never received from North and therefore the north wall can be opened to the outside with large openings bringing the outside in and establishing a connection with nature. A outdoor connection with nature has shown to improve mood and enhance performance. A walkout garden, a patio with large sliding folding doors make perfect features in the north to enjoy nature. Holy Basil or Tulsi are good indoor plants to be kept in the North-East corner of the house.

South-East zone of micro-efficiency:

The fire element is in the southeast zone of the VaastuPurushMandala. Southeast receives the overhead sunlight in the late morning which coincides with lunch preparation and therefore kitchen is best located in the South-East zone with the stove on the East wall to avail itself of the incoming sunlight. The late sunlight has strong anti-bacterial qualities and therefore the kitchen sink is recommended on the south wall facing south. Fire element signifies passion for creativity and southeast is the ideal zone for creative functions, such as a hobby room or a studio for an artist. This part can also have an enclosed sunroom that will be nice and warm to enjoy during the cold winter months. The southeast portion of a home or an office can be well decorated with indoor plants because of the sunlight received from east and south upto late afternoon. East is a good location for dinning rooms, breakfast nooks or even a small home office.

South-West zone of stability:

South-West is the direction of strength, financial stability, and vision. This is the zone of the Earth element and is ruled by Rahu. Rahu is considered a most aggressive planet and bestowes wealth. Therefore southwest is considered the zone of power. The feet of the VaastuPurusha are also in the southwest. We walk on earth with our feet and if we have clear vision and aggressive energies to go after our goals we definetely succeed in our mission. Therefore the most important people in a home or an office should always be in south west. In other words decision makers and CEO's main office, the master bedroom of the home oweners, the office of the Principal of a firm and so on must be in southwest with their chair backing the south and desk facing north.

South-West zone must be free of storage, staircase, bathrooms, or garages because the feet of VaastuPurusha are located

The North-West is also the second best zone for the kitchen and a cook working in the northwest kitchen will be very creative with the dishes.

in the southwest and heavy weight or uneven floor surface will make it difficult to walk and move forward in life. The South-West zone is the most important zone for financial stability and a cut in this zone is reflected in the finances of the owners.

Southwest receives the late sunlight and therefore the rooms used during later part of the day such as bedrooms are good in this zone. A master bedroom in this zone always has the perfect temperature and ambiance for a good rest.

North-West zone of mobility:

North-West is ruled by Moon and home of the air element. Moon is responsible for emotional strength and the prescence of air element renders mobility, so the characteristics of this zone can be best described as being constantly mobile and creatively restless. It is the best direction for creative out-of-thebox endeavors. An artist with a studio in this direction will produce works of great calibre. A conference room in this direction will yield out-of-the box solutions. A person living in this zone will be constantly on the move due to the influence of air element. The North-West is also the second best zone for the kitchen and a cook working in the northwest kitchen will be very creative with the dishes. Some functions recommended for northwest zone are guest bedroom, artist's studio, kitchen, hobby room etc. For commercial spaces this zone can have a conference room, shipping room with ready-to-ship products etc.

We receive the westerly winds from northwest and this zone is good for family room, lounging, seating, outdoor patios etc. Provide tall windows in the north of northwest to bring in the evening breeze inside the house.

Brmhasthan the source of five elements:

The central space of the house is called Brmhasthan and is ruled by akaasha. It should always be free from walls, furniture and kept open and airy as much as possible. A skylight in the center of the building brings in not only daylight to the heart of the space but also creates a very soothing ambiance. According to Vedic Architecture, the Brmhasthan is a sacred space where all the positive, regenerating energies are present. A meditation room or a prayer room is recommended in this zone. The center of the house is where the core or stomach of the VaastuPurush is

located and therefore it should not be weighed over (burdened) with staircases, storage rooms, bathrooms, and so on. A weight over the Brhmasthan results in wastage of opportunities in a person's life. Brmhasthan can be slightly elevated with a step up, but it should never be below the finished floor level. In other words there should never be a step down of any kind in the central zone of a building since it results in wasted opportunities and lack of satisfaction or the feeling of well-being in ones life.
