Sydney Zink, owner of Vivian Lou Salon in Columbus, Indiana, got into the industry after a friend’s mom recommended she join the C4 program in high school. Sydney didn’t know she wanted to be a hairstylist her whole life - she didn’t even know she had curly hair until high school! She tried college, but after working in the industry for a few months, she couldn’t resist the pull, and she knew she was in the career she needed to be in.

With a goal to own a salon by 25 years old, Sydney spent the early years of her career working 3-plus jobs, learning selfdiscipline, being available for walk-ins, and working Saturdays. In her free time, she watched two of the seasoned stylists in her salon. One stylist in particular, Jackie Marshall, taught her everything she needed to know. After an unfortunate event of her first salon flooding in 2008, she followed Jackie to a new salon down the road. It was important to Sydney to be upfront with her owner expressing her goal to soon own her own salon. To her surprise several weeks later the owner approached her to buy the salon, and it was her easiest yes! The 6 stylists who she was working with prior to being owner all still work there today, and she added two since, completing her salon family of 8. Each individual stylist brings multiple strengths which is a huge contributing factor to making the team a whole.

Within a few months of taking over, a name change was in order – Vivian

Lou. Vivian Lou is named after two very strong and influential women in Sydney’s life - Vivian Lavaughn and Mary Lou. Vivian, also known as “Nannie‘’ to Sydney, ran a successful children’s clothing store for 30 years. Vivian visited Sydney weekly (sometimes more) while she was in cosmetology school, sharing stories on how even at a young age Sydney was interested in how her grandma ran the business. Mary Lou, also known as Sydney’s “grandmother,” was her biggest supporter and hardest critic. Against her grandmother’s opinion, Sydney moved out at a young age and opened her salon by 25. But after 45 years with her previous stylist, her grandmother switched to Sydney to support her on her new venture. It didn’t take long before she became the salon grandmother, visiting every Thursday for a roller set and lunch. Sydney explained her team as being irreplaceable. She spoke a lot about the importance of keeping the team her priority. She humbly admitted that she has made mistakes over her 12 years of ownership, but she constantly reminds herself of the growth that comes from each mistake and how each mistake is an opportunity to learn. The Vivian Lou team is like a family, and just like a family, you have to nourish the relationship.

Sydney always knew she wanted to carry Paul Mitchell products because Nannie used them growing up, and she loved the sleek style of their bottles. She loves the close-knit Paul Mitchell culture and how well the entire brand complements itself. Each product has a purpose and complementary products to complete the look from start to finish. Advice to a stylist who is transitioning to ownership:

Communication is key. Set goals, but be realistic. Do not forget that you are always your hardest critic. Be kind to yourself and always remember to communicate with your team. Always remember what it’s like to be the stylist.
