So Busy: Keeping Up with Jannelle So Janelle is actually So into dates. A stickler for pre-planning, she and Lester decided to get married on July 20th, a date far from life’s other celebrations and those of their family members. They wanted to reserve the month for themselves, and the sentiment extended to the birth of the children as well. Initially when they started trying, Jannelle was aiming for an auspicious date devoid of any other major holidays.

LUIS “CHAVIT” SINGSON THE “NORTHERN RENAISSANCE” By Edith Y. Pendleton

I

ndefatigable is one word to describe the gentleman from the North. I was privileged to have personally spoken to him over the phone. It seems like only yesterday when Manila Up! International Magazine (MUIM) featured Chavit (as he is more popularly known) on the cover. But time does fly and there is no stopping him from pursuing more lofty projects. Formerly the Governor of Ilocos Sur. he gained phenomenal grounds to help improve the plight of his constituents while lending his gift as a visionary towards making the province a destination which needed a boost to lure visitors and, in the process, increase revenues derived from tourism. It was with new, bolder opportunities to improve the local economy that he introduced as he sought to deliver on his promises before being voted in as Governor.

Fast forward to the present. He did not step out of office, he merely stepped aside to make his new role as the Mayor of Narvacan. The place is now becoming an incubator for the utilization of ideas that are relevant and useful for the benefit of the populace. His pet project is to provide free Wi-Fi to the locals who can now expand their horizons beyond the small town. He envisions “Gracia Telecom” company as a conduit and a platform for further expansion into the world now overtaken by telecommunications.

manilaupmagazine.com

He has a formula for progressive and sustainable development and Narvacan is ripe and ready for the Mayor’s modernization plans. Ongoing are seeds of concepts being applied in various programs for alternative power supplies using solar, hydro, and wind to compete with other countries whose companies are just waiting in the wings to assume the role of providers for such options. Keeping it local, Chavit has introduced “Rebar”, technology to change the steel to (which is a carcinogen) into fiberglass, a first in Narvacan. Is it going to be another Vigan (also in Ilocos Sur) which has gained the status as a UNESCO Heritage site? All these cannot be achieved single handedly, despite being a leader of note. Folks in Narvacan need to step up and cooperate with his efforts. For instance, he has a Master plan to relocate the town’s market along the highway where more customer traffic can provide increased income for the vendors. There too is the matter of Republic Act 7171 (on Excise taxes) which he wants to revert back to 2016. 11

And then there are infrastructures that need attention. When he ran for Mayor, he noticed that there were no new markets and the Municipal buildings were long overdue for improvement. If he was to openly engage with and serve the people who put him in office, he is willing to cross Party lines to make these all a reality. Another legacy which he hopes to leave behind is to put up the tallest image of Jesus Christ in Vigan. It may begin construction next year and eventually make it another draw for tourism.

His mission in 3 years is to make it all happen. To be transparent plus to be even more accountable to his people. Investing in Energy Valley, a model for the introduction and application of many forms of energy that will make Narvacan gear itself up to compete with other countries like Korea in the field of energy and research. With all his success in life, his renewed interest in making life for others more rewarding comes with its attendant challenges and obstacles. However, knowing Chavit and his zest for life, the foreseeable future is just one achievement after another. LOS ANGELES (Nov. 14, 2019) – The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has selected Dylan and Paris Brosnan as the Golden Globe Ambassadors for the 2020 Golden Globe Awards season. Dylan and Paris are the sons of two-time Golden Globe Award nominee Pierce Brosnan and filmmaker and environmentalist Keely Shaye Brosnan. In addition to aligning themselves with a nonprofit organization and working to raise awareness of a cause of their choosing, Dylan and Paris will assist with the distribution of statues during the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards. They will be joined by previously announced Carol Burnett Award recipient, Ellen DeGeneres; Cecil B. DeMille Award honoree, Tom Hanks; and recently announced host, Ricky Gervais, at the Party of the YearŽ, which will air LIVE coast to coast on NBC Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020, at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT. from The Beverly Hilton. The outgoing 2019 Golden Globe Ambassador Isan Elba, daughter of Golden Globe winner Idris Elba, introduced Dylan and Paris as the 2020 Golden Globe Ambassador at Catch LA in West Hollywood, California. This is the first time the position will be held by two brothers.

ON AND OFF THE RED CARPET

“For the first time in Golden Globe history, we’ve proudly selected two brothers to represent the Hollywood Foreign Press Association this awards season,” said President of the HFPA Lorenzo Soria. “Dylan and Paris Brosnan have already achieved tremendous success in the fashion world and are following in their father’s footsteps in entertainment. We’re excited to see how they’ll use this platform to contribute their talents to elevate the important issue of childhood hunger.” Dylan and Paris shared that as part of the philanthropic efforts associated with the title of Golden Globe Ambassador, they would be focusing their efforts on the issue of childhood hunger and education. The organization they’ve partnered with is FEED, a social impact-driven brand founded by Lauren Bush Lauren, delivering nutritious meals to schoolaged children around the globe.

18

“We’re proud to honor our dad’s legacy as we join the incredible roster of previous Golden Globe Ambassadors, many of whom have gone on to pursue their own dreams in the entertainment industry,” said Dylan Brosnan, who will be graduating from the USC School of Cinematic Arts this spring. “The biggest lesson our dad taught us is to ‘be kind,’ which was an essential factor in Paris and my decision to study filmmaking and our desire to tell important stories. Having this opportunity to turn the spotlight outward on kids experiencing hunger is a true privilege.” “As students, my brother and I understand the value of education and its importance in equipping the next generation with skills to succeed,” added Paris Brosnan, who traveled to Sri Lanka with FEED to produce a short film in support of the organization’s life-changing work

The Conviction of the Mauna Kea Encampment manilaupmagazine.com

I

n has been five long grueling months. Five months since the first arrests of 38 Kupuna (elders) were made in Puʻu Huluhulu, at the base of Mauna Kea. Five months of banging ceremonial drums in the beating sun. Five months of revering sacred grounds in the pouring rain. Five months of local and international news coverage, seemingly stagnant political chatter, and relentless native Hawaiians accumulating en masse to comprise the Kia‘i (protectors). Five months…and counting. It all began on July 15th 2019, the day construction was slated to recommence on the Thirty-Meter Telescope (TMT) atop Mauna Kea – given the project had encountered numerous stops & starts since its inception in 2013. Mauna Kea had been shortlisted and eventually selected from several proposed locations for its stable, dry, and cold climate, as these characteristics are important for producing the clearest images. Mauna Kea is a million-year-old dormant volcano, the highest point in the state of Hawaii, and when measured from its underwater base to its peak 13,803 feet above sea level, it is the tallest mountain in world at over 33,000 feet. While these figures are as immense as they are impressive from a geological standpoint, the mauna is also considered a heiau (sacred site); its summit dubbed the “region of the gods” in Hawaiian mythology. This sacred regard for the mountain is not solely reserved for its ancient Hawaiian inhabitants; its cultural significance resonates today in those who feel the plight of those who Ku Kia‘i Mauna (guard the mountain). 34-year-old Camissa Hill, a Kamehameha Schools alum of Hawaiian, Chinese, and English descent working as a live event showrunner and TV producer in Los Angeles,

manilaupmagazine.com

GLASS HALF-FIL California, is one such individual. The Bachelor of Fine Arts grad majoring in Acting from Syracuse University spends her time producing shows like “American Idol”, “MasterChef ”, and “Dancing with the Stars”. As such she is accustomed to springing into action – yet despite such a busy schedule, even she felt compelled by a different call to “Action!”: “I was back home with my family on Oahu when the Kupuna were being arrested. My family and I sat in the living room all day watching the Facebook live streams on TV. [We] all cried watching how awful it all was.” She goes on to describe the event as a very sad day for Hawaiians; police officers were having to reluctantly arrest elderly family members blocking access roads despite their thoughts (and support) of the demonstration. A few weeks after the arrests were made, Kamehameha Schools put out a call to its alumni, inviting anyone who wanted to make the pilgrimage to Mauna Kea to represent the institution. Camissa grasped at the opportunity, “[I] was able to be a part of the largest organized/collective group there and ‘present gifts’ to the Kupuna. It was a very, very special moment and day for me”. She describes her experience firsthand and touches upon the misrepresentation of the encampment in the media: “Kia‘i on Mauna Kea have created a fully functioning community. There were rumors that it was full of trash and unclean, all of which were completely untrue! You get a true sense of community there. Everyone WANTS to help. Everyone WANTS to have a purpose and pitch in, helping the community run smoothly and safely. Everyone is kind to each other and truly living Aloha.”

23

GLASS HALF-FIL

This collective reverence felt by Camissa spurned her on to do something more for her ancestral home; once back on the mainland she contacted her likeminded friend and coworker Cassandra Bohe. The 33-year-old Historical & Political Studies major from Chaminade University comes from a FilipinoGerman-American household, and is no stranger to cultural repression: “I lived in the Philippines until I was 4 when my family was evacuated during the Mount Pinatubo eruption. As I grew older, I learned more about Filipino history and the fight to maintain the language despite over 300 years of Spanish colonization. People before me fought that fight for me. They stood up and did the work so that I could keep my language. It’s time for me to pay that forward and help another culture with their current needs. The culture that took my family in when we escaped disaster.” 24

Cassandra was visiting family in Oahu during the last round of arrests. Like Camissa, she sat on her bed and wept upon seeing the imagery. She made the trek to Mauna Kea by carpooling with a friend of a friend. Her initial impression of the encampment upon arrival – after having traveled with a complete stranger – was that of familiarity rather than fear. “I felt a tap on my shoulder: [there stood] a friend from Oahu I’ve known for over a decade. There was something comforting about expecting to be in a situation full of strangers, and seeing someone I knew”. She echoes the camaraderie expressed by Camissa: “Everyone was respectful, courteous, and peaceful. Hungry? There are kitchens for you with hot food. Thirsty? There are places to fill your reusable bottles. Sick? There’s a place to get better. Need childcare? There’s a place for your kids. Want

to learn more? Classes are held multiple times a day for everyone to join. The dancing, the music, the chanting were inspiring. I could feel the energy not just from the people there, but from those who came before, and also people sending their energy to the mauna from all over the world.” The aloha (love, compassion)-fueled and mana (spiritual power)-driven duo quickly set to work. Wanting to show the folks on Mauna Kea that the people of Los Angeles were behind them and their cause, they set forth to create a sign-waving event to raise awareness on the issue. “As TV producers, Camissa and I have planned events all over the country and the world, so we figured this was something we could take on” Cassandra explains. “It started with one event and 50 people. We’ve since had 2 events and doubled our numbers”. Camissa continues, “I can’t believe how many people manilaupmagazine.com

GLASS HALF-FIL misrepresented culture and the bastardization of one’s heritage. My husband’s Swedish paternal grandmother was born on Kaua‘i, HI. Her father was L. David Larsen, manager of the Kilauea Sugar Plantation Co. from 1918 to 1930 and eventually became one of the “Big Five” sugarcane corporation C. Brewer and Co.’s vice president of plantation and ranch operations. In learning this family history I expressed an apprehension about penning this article, fearing a conflict of interest. My husband reassured me, “In my family there were colonizers. My grandmother wasn’t a colonizer. My father isn’t a colonizer. I am not a colonizer”. In that moment I realized that one can rectify the transgressions of a past generation to mitigate any further repercussions. My retired father-in-law now turns bowls from found wood, creating works of island art and never harming the indigenous fauna. My mother-in-law is a Department Manager at the Wilcox Medical Center in Kaua‘i. Thus proving haoles (individuals who are not native Hawaiian or Polynesian) can become respectful kamaʻaina (residents of the land, regardless of their racial background). stopped to ask us questions about what it is we were standing for. So many curious people that wanted to know more and wanted to know how to help. Because of that, we created little flyers & handouts for the second event that listed more resources and gave more info about next steps, how to donate, support, etc”. After two successful Santa Monica-based sign-waving events and realizing how many wonderful Kia‘i there were across California, “California for Mauna Kea” was born. While still very grassroots in nature, in order to continue raising awareness, both the Instagram account @caformaunakea and the website www.caformaunakea. com are useful resources for those interested in keeping updated on their efforts. www.puuhuluhulu.com is a comprehensive site for all things support and Mauna Kea-related as well. “The protectors are still on Mauna Kea, and it’s looking like they will be there for at least another 2 years, if not longer” Cassandra predicts. “Protecting Mauna Kea is definitely a marathon– not a sprint. The outcome of this will be felt around the world now, and for future generations to come. We are the future ancestors taking a stance for those to follow”. As a personal anecdote, I come from Filipino-SyrianQuebecois (French Canadian) ancestry. As such I feel a heightened awareness when it comes to disappearing & manilaupmagazine.com

So too can you. For those of you traveling to the Hawaiian Islands for the holidays, Cassandra offers up some advice: “Don’t leave trash. Make sure you use sunscreen that won’t further damage the coral reefs. Do some basic research about how Hawaii came to be a state – Hawaiian history is painful, but full of strength and resilience. You’ll have a deeper understanding & better appreciation of the land you’re going to for Mai Tais and sunshine”. Camissa adds, “Hawaii is paradise, but it is also home to so many people fighting to preserve a culture. We want you to enjoy the sunshine, the beautiful scenery, and the Aloha spirit, but do so with respect. If you take a moment to educate yourself about the places you intend to visit, you’ll have a much deeper understanding of their significance which will hopefully lead to a greater appreciation of our land, and a more meaningful vacation”. While media coverage of actors like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jason Momoa, and Nicole Scherzinger visiting the mountain may have ceased, those on Mauna Kea fight on. Share their story, spread the awareness, further your education, and while traveling remember to maintain Aloha ʻAina (love of the land) always. The concept of Aloha is so much more than a trendy catchphrase on a hat or T-shirt. It is a way of life. And to those still on the mauna, Mahalo Nui Loa (thank you very much). n 25

ATELIER DIANA MICULIT

I

photos by Dodi Markus and Diana Bilec

just fell in love with this brand after having modelled one of her couture creations in London. It was sublimely tailored delivering a perfect fit. It was the standout outfit of the entire fashion show and created a real buzz the whole evening. Out of all the outfits available, I decided to wear it throughout the event as it was so comfortable to wear, receiving plenty of compliments. It truly showcased her talent as a designer of note. Atelier Diana Miculit is the brand name whilst Belzeboutik is the Promotional Project between the partners behind the brand, Diana Miculit and her longtime friend Liliana who has an MBA in International Business. Diana is the Creative Director whilst Liliana acts as the brand ambassador and in charge of business development. With this professional support behind her, Diana has been able to focus all her energy on her creativity as a designer. Diana Miculit has a Master’s Degree in Fashion & Design and completed Master Classes with the renowned designer Elie Saab. With her innate artistic talent, it has enabled her to master all aspects of the craft including drawing, painting, handmade 3D effects, leather appliquÊ, painting and embroidery on delicate fabrics and much more. She has incorporated all these techniques in her stunning creations to create unique feminine outfits fit for a queen. Her artistry is evident in her designs with visually stunning details and intricate embroidery. Her focus on creating visually stunning outfits using only natural fabrics like silk, cashmere, leather and wool of the finest quality has propelled her to the upper echelons within the world of fashion. With a showroom in Paris and holding many exciting events in London, Moscow, New York and other global fashion capitals, Atelier Diana Miculit and Belzeboutik are brands that have the potential to become household names in the very near future. I for one has been won over and believe that this brand will have an enduring legacy.n

HESPERA COUTURE

am frequently associated with “fairy tale” couture dresses as a model. I love modelling these amazing creations but unfortunately they are not the most practical for everyday wear. So it might surprise those who know me that I would select Hespera Couture as a brand to watch out for. Founded by Petya Angelova, the brand ethos is focused on delivering high quality yet affordable casual and comfortable wear. Petya is an award winning designer with a degree in Fashion Design. Having started her career as a Garment Technologist, she progressed to work with renowned designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney and Christopher Raeburn. She now has over 20 years experience in the fashion industry at the highest level. She identified a clear gap in the market for high quality tailored garments at reasonable prices which led her to establish Hespera Couture.

manilaupmagazine.com

The style is funky and edgy with plenty of asymmetrical features. One can easily notice the influence of Vivienne Westwood but with the youthful zest of Olivier Rousteing, Creative Director of Balmain. Her garments could be described as casual elegant, sporty, practical, comfortable and fashionable. All her designs showcase a high degree of design that exudes femininity. Sometimes a bit quirky, yet trendy, Hespera Couture is definitely suitable for those who don’t like to follow the crowd. They who are proud of their individuality and not afraid to show their true self. What is so refreshing is that her ready-to-wear line delivers the same quality as her couture outfits but at a fraction of the cost. MONACO: Fashion, STYLE & TRAVEL ashion is a tremendously competitive industry. To get noticed amongst the throng often takes vast amounts of money. But few have the resources to compete with the big brands or those with wealthy backers. That does not mean that the designers who are not household names are any less talented. Often, they have to not only excel at their craft but also be more innovative and creative to get any recognition. Having been a successful international model for over a decade, I attend most of the international fashion weeks and numerous fashion events around the world. Sometimes I am fortunate enough to work with some of the most famous fashion designers, but I also come across less well known designers who amaze me with their creativity and designs. Here are three/four designers whom you may never have heard of but whom you should really look out for.

ELI B

Eli B is an Italian brand that epitomises “La Dolce Vita”, where fashion is in perfect symbiosis with art in a celebration of the joys of life. You can’t help but smile when you see her wonderful creations. They just bring happiness to not only the wearer but also to everyone around. The style evokes memories of the fun-filled and rebellious 1950s but with a modern artistic twist. Uber feminine with clean lines make her dresses ideally

36

suitable for the wearer to personalise their look to reflect their mood and spirit. One could easily imagine Audrey Hepburn jumping out from the screen in one of her creations representing a romantic, yet chic look. Or you could easily turn into a “rock chick” by adding boots and a leather jacket. For an elegant appearance, add a stylish coat and you will be dressed to impress. This illustrates the versatility of her outfits. Having worked for Versace and Prada, Eli B certainly has top credentials in fashion. There are strong influences from both brands whilst her embrace of art into her designs ensures a high degree of originality. She collaborates with artists from all over the world to create unique pieces fit for everyone, young or old, that makes you stand out from the crowd. Her fashion imbues the sense that the human body is the ultimate transportable canvas. It perfectly embodies what the wearer wishes to communicate to the outside world about themselves. Eli B evokes the visceral sense that whoever wears her clothes enjoys life, likes to have fun and are confident in themselves. That is evident in her to die for handbags. Not only do they perfectly accessorise her clothes, but they are also amazing artworks on their own. Just so desirable. When I saw her collection, I wished that I could just grab everything as they would take pride of place in my wardrobe. As a model I am used to people staring at me, but wearing her clothes I know that heads will be turning for all the right reasons. I can’t wait for her next collection. I have already started saving up so that I am first in line to get hold of her next artwork.n

K

nights of Rizal New York Chapter Award for Excellence (KOY NY AFE) was successfully held last Friday, November 15th, at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall, in Manhattan. These awards were conceived for different categories which the Philippine national hero had excelled, with equal importance to the Youth to whom he had given a preeminent role as the hope of society. Singled out are Filipino American exemplars of excellence with the goal of keeping the values of Dr. Rizal alive. Sir Mariano Aquino, Jr., KCR, KOR NY Chapter Commander, spearheaded the campaign together with a number of volunteer Knights and Ladies. Of note was the hands-on role that Lady Aprille Piamonte-Aquino had in the successful completion of this event.

Sir Romulo Alcalde Aromin, Jr., MD, Chair of the Awards Committee, assembled a group of formidable judges who are also are excelling professionals in their community. On an even larger scale, Sir Aquino conceived of the Heritage Award to acknowledge the works of an individual, group or organization that has exceptionally and singularly moved forward the ideals and values of Dr. Jose P. Rizal. The breadth of the work’s influence is felt to be on a much larger scale that significantly contributed to that common sense of pride, thereby raising the consciousness of the Filipinos’ shared identity as a race and as a nation. The honoree is seen to have excelled consistently and has built upon a record of consistency and credibility over the years. With the award being of heightened recognition, a commissioned art piece was an award itself, and created by another established artist, Sir Cesar delos Santos. Heritage Award’s seminal offering was bestowed upon Messrs. Jerry Sibal and Edwin Josue for their significant role in the multiple restaging of the opera, Noli Me Tangere, first in 2017 at Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Abelardo in 2017 and in multiple sold out reruns in 2019 at the same venue. Mr. Sibal involved himself as codirector, set and costume designer at this year’s production. The opera was originally staged in 1957 at Far

Eastern University, and then at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in 1974 and 1987.In his acceptance speech, Mr. Josue also thanked other figures including most importantly, Atty. Loida Lewis, a well-known and respected community leader, entrepreneur, philanthropist and patron of the arts, who made it possible for the opera to be staged

in the US including its staging at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. She presented the award together with NY Consul General Claro Cristobal and Sir Aquino. A particular oratory, Dr. Rizal’s Mi Ultimo Adios (Huling Paalam, [Last Farewell] as translated by Andres Bonifacio in Filipino and written just before he was executed), 55

In that instance, he reunited with Rizal (as represented by Maan Cruz, Orator) who evidently became the symbolic representation of the Motherland. This then became the springboard for Mheco Manlangit, Soprano, herself the featured soloist for the opera’s Kay Tamis ng Buhay to rouse the audience to an ovation and praise after the song. A program of Kundiman, as conceived by Sir Aromin, Jr., and created by Sir Rogelio Penaverde, Jr., himself an Opera tenor and one of the performers, walked the audience through Filipino romanticism. Penaverde gathered other classically trained Filipino American musicians in assembling a genre of traditional Filipino compositions in Tagalog, reminiscent of songs that are lofty devotions to one’s beloved, but in its purest forms are odes of 56

In a very inspiring and longer than his usual laconic closing signature remarks, ConGen Cristobal spoke of the award as a badge of honor devoid of any medals to show but of values long endeared to be kept alive. A cocktails reception was held a day earlier at the Philippine Center on 5th Avenue in Manhattan to allow for a closer intermingling of by-invitation only guests with the honorees. A short lecture on “Kidney Health: Common Knowledge to Know”, was given by Edgar Lerma, MD, the awardee for Health and Science, as part of promoting Health and Wellness. The audience was serenaded by Mitch Week with Filipino Love songs. ISRAEL PHOTOS COURTESY OF ISRAELI MINISTRY TOURISM

GRAND ADVENTURE by ANNA MARIE MATEESCU 64

A Middle Eastern country on the Mediterranean Sea, is regarded by Jews, Christians and Muslims as the biblical Holy Land. Majority of sacred sites are in Jerusalem. JERUSALEM is the capital of Israel as it happens to be within its Old City, the Temple Mount complex includes the Dome of the Rock shrine, the historic Western Wall, Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. TEL AVIV is Israel’s financial hub, is known for its Bauhaus architecture and beaches. The Arab Palestinian economy collapsed while 250,000 Palestinian Arabs fled. On May 1948, the day before the expiration of the British Mandate, David Ben-Gurion, the head of the Jewish Agency, declared

“the establishment of a Jewish state in Eretz-Israel, to be known as the State of Israel.” How did Israel become a country in the first place. Social and political developments in Europe convinced Jews they needed their own country, and their ancestral homeland seemed like the right place to establish it. European Jews 90 percent of all Jews at the time arrived at Zionism partly because of rising anti-Semitic persecution and partly because the Enlightenment introduced Jews to secular nationalism. Between 1896 and 1948, hundreds of thousands of Jews resettled from Europe to what was then British-controlled Palestine, including large numbers forced out of Europe during the Holocaust. manilaupmagazine.com

GRAND ADVENTURE Many Arabs saw the influx of Jews as a European colonial movement, and the two peoples fought bitterly. The British couldn’t control the violence, and in 1947 the United Nations voted to split the land into two countries. Almost all of the roughly 650,000 Jews went to the blue territory in the map to the right, and a majority of the Arab population (roughly twice the size of the Jewish community) went to the orange. The Jewish residents accepted the deal. The Palestinians, who saw the plan as an extension of a long-running Jewish attempt push them out of the land, fought it. The Arab states of Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, and Syria all later declared war on Israel, as well (albeit not to defend the Palestinians). Israeli forces defeated the Palestinian militias and Arab armies in a vicious conflict that turned 700,000 Palestinian civilians into refugees. The UN partition promised 56 percent of British Palestine for the Jewish state; by the end of the war, Israel possessed 77 percent — everything except the West Bank and the eastern quarter of Jerusalem (controlled by Jordan), as well as the Gaza Strip (controlled by Egypt). It left Israelis with a state, but not Palestinians. Zionism is Israel’s national ideology. Zionists believe Judaism is a nationality as well as a religion.

manilaupmagazine.com

WHAT IS GAZA?

It’s a strip of land surrounded by Israel but populated by Palestinians. Gaza is a densely populated strip of land that is mostly surrounded by Israel and peopled almost exclusively by Palestinians. Israel used to have a military presence, but withdrew unilaterally in 2005. It’s currently under Israeli blockade. The sporadic rocket fire that’s hit Israel from there since its pullback has strengthened Israeli hawks’ political position, as they have long argued that any Palestinian state would end up serving as a launching pad for attacks on Israel.

MASADA

Masada is one of Israel’s most popular tourist attractions (“Fortress”) is an ancient fortificationin the Southern District of Israel situated on top of an isolated rock plateau, akin to amesa. It is located on the eastern edge of the Judaean Desert, overlooking the Dead Sea 20 km (12 mi) east of Arad.Herod the Great built two palaces for himself on the mountain and fortified Masada between 37 and 31 BCE. According to Josephus, the siege of Masada by Roman troops from 73 to 74 CE, at the end of the First Jewish–Roman War, ended in the mass suicide of the 960 Sicarii rebels who were hiding there.

65

GRAND ADVENTURE

Masada tours are a must for anyone visiting Israel, and an easy trip from Jerusalem – just about an hour’s drive southeast. Masada’s archaeological remains bring alive its 70-70 CE inhabitants’ intriguing tale. A symbol of steadfast strength to preserve national and religious identity and homeland, Masada is so replete with history that Israel invests in it as an official national park, and UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 2001. In addition, Masada is a high hilltop plateau offering unmatched, vast views of the Dead Sea and Judean Desert. For all these reasons, Masada tours are extremely popular.

BET SHEAN NATIONAL PARK

This site is truly mind boggling and a must-see in Israel. The ruins here are an entire city and they are in awesome condition. As you explore the ancient ruins, you listen to an audio presentation at each point while walking on the ancient mosaics, touching the walls and sitting on the roman theater seats. Beside these delightful views of ancient Roman don’t miss out on the site’s ‘city by night’ option “Shean Nights”, a spectacular audiovisual display that guarantees a night to remember. 66

GRAND ADVENTURE

CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the most holy and special sites in Christianity. Located in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, the church is home to two of the holiest sites in Christianity – the site where Jesus was crucified, known as Calvary, and the tomb where Jesus was buried and then resurrected, Today, the tomb is enclosed by a shrine called the Aedicula. The final four Stations of the Cross, or Via Dolorosa, are also located inside the church.

ISRAEL MUSEUM JERUSALEM

The Israel Museum, Jerusalem is Israel’s largest cultural institution and is ranked among the world’s leading art and archeology museums. Founded in 1965, the Israel Museum, Jerusalem was extensively extended and refurbished reopening in 2010. The focus of the museum is on the art, Judaica and ancient artifacts of the Land of Israel and beyond, featuring the most extensive holdings of Biblical and Holy Land archeology in the world. The museum has a collection of nearly 500,000 objects, representing a full scope of world material culture. While there is loads to see at the Israel Museum,Jerusalem, there are a number of stand-out highlights. The Shrine of the Book houses the Dead Sea Scrolls which are some of the oldest Biblical scrolls ever found. Adjacent to this is an amazing model of Second Temple Era Jerusalem which reconstructs the topography and architectural character of the city as it was prior to its destruction by the Romans in 66 CE. manilaupmagazine.com

MOUNT BEATITUDES

The Mount of Beatitudes is a hill in Northern Israel on the Korazim Plateau. It is the spot where Jesus is believed to have delivered his Sermon on the Mount. Overlooking the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, the mount offers enchanting views of the northern part of the lake and across to the cliffs of the Golan Heights. There is archaeological evidence of an ancient church near to the current building dating from the late 4th century, which coincides with the pilgrimages that were recorded around the same time. Its rock-cut cistern and the remains of a small monastery can still be seen. Part of an original mosaic floor from Capernaum is also on display. Although the specific site where Jesus stood and delivered his sermon has never been confirmed through physical evidence, the location of the Mount of Beatitudes is entirely reasonable, as Jesus was based in Capernaum, which is located just a few miles away and is clearly visible from the mount. 67

GRAND ADVENTURE

While religiously significant for obvious reasons, one does not have to be religious to enjoy the beauty of this site. Although a visit to the church will make clear why it is so special in Christianity, non-religious visitors can also admire and appreciate its unique atmosphere and incredible architecture. The Jordan River is a significant religious site mentioned numerous times in both the Old and New Testaments. The actual biblical place where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist is believed to be in Jordan, on the east bank of the river opposite Jericho, at Wadi AlKharrar, identified as Bethany Beyond the Jordan. This is where John lived and was himself baptized, and where Jesus fled to for safety after being threatened with stoning in Jerusalem.

68

SEA OF GALILEE

also called Lake Tiberias, Arabic Buḥayrat Ṭabarīyā, Hebrew Yam Kinneret, lake in Israel through which the Jordan River flows. It is famous for its biblical associations; its Old Testament name was Sea of Chinnereth, and later it was called the Lake of Gennesaret. The Sea of Galilee is an attraction for Christian pilgrims who visit Israel to see the places where Jesus performed miracles according to the New Testament, such as his walking on water, calming the storm and feeding the multitude. The sea’s location makes it subject to sudden and violent storms as the wind comes over the eastern mountains and drops suddenly onto the sea. Storms are especially likely when an east wind blows cool air over the warm air that covers the sea. The cold air (being heavier) drops as the warm air rises. n manilaupmagazine.com

CHRISTMAS IN MANILA. CHRISTMAS IN NEW YORK CITY

by SYLVIA ZAMORA 70

There is no place like home, as we all say... and it’s true. Manila, as we start the “BER” months, Christmas in Manila -- starts as well. We could be the earliest celebrators of Christmas in the whole wide world, but it suits us just fine. At the strike of midnight of September 1st, Christmas songs start playing over the airwaves and it gives me that sad, yet warm feeling of joy remembering Christmases past, where everyone in the family were in complete attendance- grandparents, parents, “Titos” and “Titas” who were at their prime young, vibrant, energetic and full of life. Christmas in Manila is all about family, where we are surrounded with not a few but a dizzying number of relatives from all sides of the family. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cousins are of equal importance because we grew up knowing them only as cousins, period! September 1st in Manila. Christmas lights are turned on! Malls are shining brighter with a mix

of reds, greens, blues and whites. Spotlighting the facade of their buildings, each mall making a huge “reveal” of their much planned out secret creative creation which was planned out a year in advance. We awaited what C.O.D. had to offer for us kids this year! A tradition was of driving there with the whole family in tow and standing outside gazing in awe. Oohhs and ahhs filled the cool September air with us standing across the street of C.O.D., everyone watching the beautiful moving display which was the size of the whole expanse of the building’s facade. It never failed to amaze us kids, it was like having the best Christmas Wonderland right before our very eyes! Highways were decorated with gigantic colorful “parols” (Filipino lanterns), in a variety of designs and colors, with each city trying to outdo the other, much to our delight as our eyes feasted on the beauty of Christmas as we drove from Manila to Pasay to Makati to Paranaque to Alabang to Cavite to Edsa to Mandaluyong to Pasig to Quezon City to Novaliches, and so forth and so on. Christmas is alive in Manila! 71

New York. Christmas is alive here too, in the Big Apple! Lights are shining through every nook and cranny of the busy streets of New York. For once every year, Times Square is not the only area lit up like day in Manhattan. It’s all over every street, every avenue, every store, every park, every home, every window, everywhere! Each store trying to outdo each other’s Christmas display. Walk to Macy’s on Fifth to be like that child ogling the display of C.O.D., Cubao in the Philippines. Some things are just like home being here in New York. Christmas in the city is like being in Manila. Lights and displays are at their best. You hear ooohhsss and aaahhhhss whilst walking the streets. Enormous buildings lit up like giant gifts, astonishing lights and awesome displays of creativity looking like a competition is going on

as to which has the best display, most creative, or most amazing Happiness is in the air! Manila. New York. One may be known as the best city in the world, but Christmas is both as spectacular in these two cities. Christmas lights and all that twinkle in the air, all that shimmer and glimmer of gold dust though imaginary permeates the air. That beautiful feeling of what Christmas brings to our hearts, with a touch of sadness missing our departed relatives, but mostly the nostalgia of the season is what makes it the most beguiling holiday of the year. It’s true that there’s no place like home but I believe, home is where the heart is. Right now, today in New York, with all it’s glory and splendor, brings the spirit of Christmas, almost exactly as how beautiful it was, in Manila. MERRY CHRISTMAS to all and may the New Year bring love, happiness and peace into your hearts and home. n

UNITY PLUS DETERMINATION EQUALS VICTORY (HADRIAN WALL/ VINDOLANDA NORTH OF BRITAIN)

KINGDOM ADVENTURE by GILDA PINEDA DIONELA 82

manilaupmagazine.com

M

odernism is a system that snatched the truth away from most people in the United Kingdom. It started around the 16th century birthed by the intellectual circle in London led by Sir Walter Ralegh called the Durham House Set. At that time, Britain was a ‘missionary sending’ and strong Bible believing nation. The questions in the Bible raised by the members of the group were Adam as the first man; and Noah’s flood. Then, the rise of evolutionary teaching led by Charles Darwin and other prominent critics of the Bible followed in succeeding centuries up to the present. Modernism was adapted in Europe and America, known to Asians like me as the “West”. All together it has been more than 400 years since the modernist minds were enslaved by deceitful knowledge, of despising the existence of God and His living Word, the Bible. The germination of the seeds non-belief in the Bible started in London, it then spread in many formerly Bible believing nations. In London, it germinated then in London it shall be uprooted so that people may know that the Lord Himself is speaking. Many of the greatest treasures of Great Britain are not modern, they are ancient. In the Northern part of the United Kingdom there is a UNESCO World Heritage Site called the Hadrian Wall. Its enormous historical importance is staggering. It was a massive barricade ten feet thick and fourteen feet high built around AD 122. It was 73 miles long and traversed northern Britain from Wall’s end, on the River Tyne in the east, to Bownesson-Solway in the west. The purpose for which it was built according to archaeologists and historians, was to separate the barbarians from Roman Britain. Hadrian wall was named after Emperor Hadrian who reigned from AD 117 to 138. In Stanegate Road, one mile south of Hadrian’s Wall one can find Vindolanda Forts. It was built around AD 85 having nine forts built on top of each other. Everything found in these locations are mind blowing and breathtaking. These survived almost 2000 years of war, strong winds, storms, and other natural calamities for them to be seen today. The common purpose of the Hadrian Wall and Vindolanda Forts was to protect Roman Britain for the glory of Imperial Rome. The Roman Army was the strength of the Empire. The Emperor was the acknowledged Commander. He wore a wreath of laurel on his head to signify victory and during festivals, a special robe to signify a triumphant leader. The legions consisted of 3000 - 6000 soldiers. The most important group of officers to hone the soldiers to become the fiercest in the history of combat who were as tough as

manilaupmagazine.com

KINGDOM ADVENTURE nails, were the Centurions. Then came the soldiers. The soldiers underwent intense training to the point of exhaustion as well as having to perform civilian duties to include road building, quarrying, mining and bridge-building. The soldiers built these archaeological treasures of Great Britain. The Hadrian Wall and Vindolanda Forts authenticated the historicity of the Bible. The excavation of over 1300 tablets, postcard sized documents which recorded their daily life in Vindolanda showed the Roman title in the Bible such as Centurion. These tablets were written by soldiers, wives, and officers as correspondence to different cities and forts of the Roman empire such as Rome, Antioch, Athens, Carlisle, and London.

CORNELIUS – THE CENTURION

There are at least 3 Centurions mentioned in the New Testament. In Acts chapter 10, the conversion of Cornelius the Centurion is narrated. He belonged to a God-fearing family who prayed regularly and gave generously to the needy. He heard the story of Jesus Christ while an officer assigned in Caesarea. Yet hearing and knowing the story was not enough. One day at about 3 o’clock an angel appeared to him and told him that his prayers and gifts to the poor had come up as a memorial offering to God. He was asked to bring Simon Peter. He sent his soldier servants to accompany Peter to visit his house. It took four days before Cornelius and Peter met. Cornelius being a Gentile or non-Jew, heard the true Gospel of Jesus Christ and gave his life to Him. He and his household were saved, they received the Holy Spirit and His gifts, and were then baptised in water. I believe in miracles and angel visitations. But miracles alone will not save anyone from eternal condemnation unless the receiver accepts the Lordship of Jesus Christ. The appearance of an angel to Cornelius was divine but more than memorial, God wanted Cornelius to spend eternity with Him. Seeing an angel and good works did not guarantee his salvation. Cornelius had to wait for Peter for him to hear and understand the true gospel of Jesus Christ. The angels are created beings a little bit higher than man. They are servants of God too, but they are not created to evangelize to man. The angel could have preached to Cornelius for him to be saved on the spot but no, it must be a man with flesh and blood like him (destined to be Peter) to bring him the “good news”. This story is profound and deep, but I am only giving you a preview. God saw the heart of Cornelius, his role in the history of Christianity was massive that it took two remarkable visions or miracles for his conversion. One for him, seeing an angel; the other one for Peter

83

KINGDOM ADVENTURE who fell into a trance (read the Bible). Visions to my mind, are such so as to strengthen and direct the receiver as to what to do in the extraordinary task ahead. While miraculous healing occurred out of compassion, as led by the Holy Spirit, (and not to make an impression),. I believe the life of Cornelius after conversion was never the same again though he remained as generous and godly as before. One of the results of baptism by the Holy Spirit is an extraordinary boldness to share the gospel of Jesus. I believe Cornelius shared his new-found faith with his fellow Roman citizens. Because of that he could have been discharged from his position and face severe persecution. The book of Acts is full of signs and wonders, but we must understand, they needed these. It was at the time believers were used as human torches in the garden of Nero. Disciples were stoned to death, imprisoned and oppressed beyond description. Peter left his family and business behind and chose to follow Christ. Being a follower of Christ meant taking up one’s cross daily. Despite all the hardships, the true followers of the Messiah stood firm for what they believed in. Then the supernatural intervened to help and confirm the message about Jesus Christ. The story of Cornelius is one of the answers to the question of Durham House. What about the first man, Adam, and Theory of Evolution, about the origins of man?. The House asked how? The Hebrew word Adam was taken from the word “Adamah” which means earth. God formed man from the dust of the earth. Also, the word “dam” in Adam means blood. From the beginning Adam meant flesh and blood like you and I. The flesh and blood became alive because of the breath (Spirit) of God. Genesis 1:27 “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them”. According to

84

Dr. Georgia Purdom, PhD in molecular genetics, “Basic biological scientific facts proved that there are only two distinct genders and sexes; male and female. Every normal human beings have 23 pairs of normal chromosomes. Twenty- two pairs are autosomes and one pair is of sex chromosomes. The sex chromosomes are; XY for male and XX for female. Now let us talk about the last Adam. Since the fall of the first male and female, mankind needed redemption. The same way that angels couldn’t convert or witness to Cornelius but only gave him the message from God, no other being can redeem man to restore his relationship with God but a man with “flesh and blood” who is, at the same time sinless God, Jesus Christ. Jesus the begotten Son of God became man, was tortured and humiliated. He wore a crown of thorns instead of a wreath of laurel. He was paraded down the streets with his flesh ripped because of whipping, and then nailed on the cross. On the third day rose again. The depth of shame He experienced on earth becomes the victory of mankind to those who believe in Him. God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name. Human beings can not approach God without the blood of Jesus. Even if angel Gabriel himself declared how blessed and commendable one human being is, he or she cannot be the right mediator between man and God though he or she is blessed forever indeed. Finally, who is the real modern man and woman today? Are they those who believe in the teaching of men which was proven wrong by recent advancements in technology and excavations? Or are they those who believe in Jesus who is the Alpha and Omega? I am a modernist living in London looking forward to spending eternity with the King of Kings of the Holy Bible in a place called heaven.n

Life is Short, Eat the Cake: A Slice of Life with Imelda Aquino

L

By: Naiia Lajoie

ife has not always been a piece of cake for Imelda Aquino. While she did grow up in a relatively well-to-do family in Palo, Leyte in the Philippines, she was number eleven in a twelvechild household. Despite carrying the Aquino name, she would opt to use her middle name of “Rose” as her surname so as not to draw attention to herself. Given people often associate the Aquino family name with riches, she recalls being called upon during her first day of school; once her full name was read aloud from the attendance sheet, she was asked if she came from wealth. Make no mistake, she acknowledges how blessed she was being brought up in a “comfortable” environment. She was raised with the help of maids – as is typical in Filipino culture –surrounded by Disney toys. Yet early on she found herself questioning whether life on the island was enough, perhaps at the behest of her immediate older

86

brother, number ten of twelve. Imelda and her brother were particularly close, and as they grew together he felt as though there was more that life had in store for his younger sister, particularly when it came to courtship. As she approached marrying age (mind you, this is fairly early in the Philippines compared to their Fil-Am counterparts), Imelda’s brother bluntly pointed out that there was no one on her level. Though there was a fellow well-off family within the vicinity, he regaled her with thoughts of traveling abroad to America. He of course knew nothing of the subject, but from what he had heard it sounded magical. Over in America their family could easily split large helpings of pork & beans – a delicacy in his mind – and claimed that if she did move to the States she would not have to cook. She could just go to McDonald’s every day; a place the entire family knew existed, but no one had ever seen let alone set foot in.

manilaupmagazine.com

FEATURE His tough love made it all sound so simple. Why waste time playing with dolls based on Disney characters when she could move to the U.S. and meet them all in person? Again, think of this prospect from the mindset of a teenager, who upon nearing the end of her teens relented to his suggestions and devised a plan to enter the United States through a student visa. But her family already had other plans, and decided via means of an arranged marriage to a wealthy suitor that she would enter the States through a spousal green card. Seeing as her fiancé hailed from an already well-established home, when her future motherin-law asked what it was the then 17-turning-18 year old wanted for her dream wedding, all Imelda could answer was a big beautiful wedding dress – which was delivered, complete with pearl button detail along the back in lieu of a zipper – and a cake that towered at 5’4”. While the request may sound ridiculous now, in her family of twelve siblings only the eldest two were married, who were 20 years her senior. She was more a daughter to them than a sister, and given no one else dared brave the move to America, she wanted to milk that American dream for all it was worth. Imelda soon learned that the American dream was not all it was cracked up to be. She did not have pork & beans or McDonald’s every day, and did have to do the cooking. She also had to wash her own clothes, and that initial marriage ended in divorce. She reminisces, “Coming to America was NOT a fantasy or dream. Especially when you had everything back home, but just didn’t realize it”.

manilaupmagazine.com

Fast forward to present day in Rogers, Arkansas. During the interview for this article Imelda is running back to a fast food joint while on the phone because she had forgotten her order at the restaurant. She remarried and has two adult kids, a 35 year old daughter who works as a scientist and a 33 year old son living in Manhattan, studying to obtain a PhD from Columbia University. She works as a real estate agent, running multiple properties across four different states – Arkansas, Arizona, Nevada, and Florida – and

owns 6000 acres of active farmland growing rice, soy beans, & corn. After the birth of her children, Imelda returned to the Philippines to introduce them to their extended family, who marveled at their ability to play the piano and violin at just 3 years old, and how happy they were – how happy SHE was. Two of her siblings caught the travel bug and decided to emigrate. Imelda encouraged them; she petitioned for their arrival into the U.S. in 1987, which at the time warranted a mere $50 cost according to her memory. “Life isn’t easy”, she recollects,

“but I made it easy for them”. Having lived stateside for 36 years now, Imelda returned to the Philippines recently following the passing of her mother. She was 96, and while most would attribute that old age to luck of the draw (especially in the Philippines) Imelda insists her mother lived that long because she wanted to. “My mother was precise. It didn’t just ‘happen’. I had a brother who passed away at 72 years old. We can pick which of life’s roads we want to go [down]” she explains. “Even if you fail, you have to get up again. That’s how you’ll live more, because you try harder. If you don’t make it, don’t give up. It’s not the end of the world”. Imelda is a far cry from the dreamladen naïve girl who left her homeland for greener pastures. “I started from scratch, and I fell so many times. I have a great life, but it took a long time to get there”. Every year for her birthday and life’s other celebrations she commemorates the day with a 5’4” cake. She also did eventually make it to Disneyland. All throughout, Imelda maintained her sunny disposition. Her colorful spirit is perpetuated in her children, who in their youth knew little of their original Filipino culture. Initially detesting the ‘foreign’ tastes and smells, they now enjoy visiting Filipino homes and love Pinoy food. “There’s always a plan. It might not be how you’re currently looking at it, but it will come. It’s close, and it’ll spontaneously grow” she imparts. Imelda’s stories of life, love, and the pursuit of happiness despite loss illustrate that one can have their cake and eat it too. n 87

So Busy: Keeping Up with

Jannelle So By: Naiia Lajoie

T

hose based in the Philippine Motherland might remember Jannelle So from her sportscaster days courtside for the Philippine Basketball Association. Others who have emigrated stateside might have caught her on various news outlets broadcasted on TFC (The Filipino Channel) or on Kababayan LA via KSCI Channel 18. The Chinese-Filipina TV personality has an extensive resume spanning across numerous platforms like Wikipedia, Instagram (@sojannelle), and her own personal website www.sojannelle.com. But Manila Up! wanted to catch up with the now mother-of-two to see what was new in her ever-busy world and ever-growing family. After a bit of a hiatus brought on by motherhood, Jannelle is back on track in terms of her TV career. The hands-on mother is by no means disappointed by her career getting sidetracked; in fact, she welcomed the change: “I’ve always wanted to be a mom. I’ve always been blessed with a good career. As such, I’m not that ambitious anymore. I don’t know if that’s good or bad… I just know that, I married late”. Jannelle married an Englishman living in Los Angeles whom she had met online. Director Lester Perkins proposed exactly twelve months after the initial exchange of emails were made between them. She was 37. After a previous engagement had been broken when she was 34, her family – in typical and traditional Filipino fashion – assumed she would be a spinster forever. Luckily that outcome was So far from the truth. manilaupmagazine.com

89

FEATURE Janelle is actually So into dates. So naturally, the due date she was given for the birth of their daughter was December 24th. Not to worry, Jannelle gave birth weeks in advance. Her daughter Lilly will be turning 4 on December 6th. Take two. In 2018 the couple learned that they were with child again – this time a son, due December 16th. Fate intervened, and again the child was born early. Her son Leo will be 1 on November 25th. So with the births of a little Christmas miracle and a Thanksgiving gift that keeps on giving, despite the compounded birthdates Jannelle is elated with how it all fell into place: “Family is the only thing that lasts. Employment can come and go, but if your value is based on what you do for a living, then that’s not very fulfilling”.

90

So, how DOES Jannelle manage to make it all work? She gushes over how lucky she is to have a solid support system. While her husband travels for work – VP/Head of Production of “Givewith”, a social enterprise founded by Paul Polizzotto – Lester is very helpful and equally hands-on. While he is traveling abroad for work (like at the time of this interview, in Peru) they have a live-in nanny for each child who stays from Tuesday afternoons to Friday mornings. So is it all worth it? After numerous starts and stops – quitting her old show in 2014, reviving the career due to boredom in 2015, hosting here & there on CBS in the interim, then launching “So Jannelle” (syndicated on TFC and the Lifestyle Network) in 2017, only to be put on 8 weeks of bed rest during her pregnancy with Leo in 2018, and finally celebrating its 2nd year anniversary in 2019 while still taking care of a baby; nursing, pumping, and not being able to work long hours – can the tenacious motherof-two make the time for a business that has seemingly slowed down?

manilaupmagazine.com

FEATURE

Jannelle is So all-in. Her dedication to her cause is only dwarfed by her doting on her children. “Family is the one thing I feel I can hold onto. Having experienced highs in my career here and in the Philippines, there’s [still] nothing like spending time with my children” she says over the phone with child in hand. “Time management is the key. I meal prep for my kids; no ready-made anything, I cook everything”. Motherhood is not without its sacrifices, and even for the super-womanly busybody that Jannelle is, her priorities remain fixed and true. “I adjust my lifestyle accordingly. I do not go out late at night and regrettably turn down invites so that I can spend time with kids in the morning after ensuring I get enough sleep”. The family has decided to stay put for the holidays, especially given a hectic schedule is their norm. While they did spend two weeks in England and visited Croatia for one during the summer, manilaupmagazine.com

she admits it is difficult traveling with children. “One is manageable. Two is tough”. So what is in store for the talk show host and journalist who is accustomed to gracing the same space as Miss Universe Catriona Gray? Or covering the perpetual man of the hour who packs a powerful punch, Manny Pacquiao? Jannelle plans on putting the “So” back in “Social”. With her children growing, she wants to take care of herself more; return to working out. “In 2020 I want to push more. Travel more. Attend more night events. Build the show. I want more stories. I’m trying different things; I want to do more on social media for a stronger digital presence”. Well Jannelle, we are So impressed by your conviction, So inspired by your familial dedication, and So excited to see what you do next. We have no doubt it will be So exceptional. n

ROMEO BALBOA

T

rekking, or for the most part hiking, has always been one of my lifelong passionS. What really draws me to the mountain is beyond me. Is it because “IT’S THERE!? I am not going to give any psychological reasons as to why but let me just tell you humbly

92

that it’s because NOW!!! I HAVE THE RESOURCES! And that it includes one’s HEALT H!,and, a very supportive wife who is herself is an avid mountaineer. All that aside, let’s get back to the mountain. To be specific it’s Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest (19,341ft) freestanding mountain in the world located in West Africa. Mt Everest may be higher but it belongs to a range of Himalayan mountains in Nepal and India. Mt. Kilimanjaro is all by itself, alI because of volcanic activity. In 2014 I was invited by a generous, dear friend from Oregon to join him and his group to scale Mt. Kilimanjaro and I did not disappoint him. The journey began with a 21 hour flight from Los Angeles to Amsterdam and

to Tanzania in West Africa where it sat waiting. (Backtrack a bit to Los Angeles where 2 months before my journey to Africa I had to acclimate and condition my body to extreme elevations and weather temperatures. I even spent the whole night at Mt Baldy (10,064 ft or 3,068 m). The final objective destination was Uhuru Point, the summit. The trek started at a base camp taking the “Lemoso” route, promising spectacular vistas. It is at the base camp where we get all our gears together and our assigned porters and guide.

FEATURE

(Fast forward, 7 spectacular eventful days later at the main summit. I raised the Filipino flag all the while shivering cold, but relieved and felt so happy and blessed. For a brief hour at the summit I savored and captured the sheer panoramic vista that lay beneath my boots.) What a personal accomplishment! I am aware though that I was not the first one to scale such a grand mountain and I couldn’t care less if anyone would belittle it. What really matters is I did it not just for myself but for all my friends and Filipinos. The feeling is difficult to even describe it but it was SO GOOD! Out of initially 9 trekkers, only 8 of us made it to the top. No fatalities,

manilaupmagazine.com

only pure exhaustion made one back out. The descent back to the base camp only took us 2 days not as remarkable as the ascent but it still was fulfilling. In April 2018 I joined another expedition. It was for Mt. Everest. But there was no attempt for the summit this time (maybe next) . We only went as far as the base camp, a 9 day hike and was it crowded. I found out that it would take an average trekker another 7 days to reach the summit from where we were standing. Anyway, that might be for another day (hopefully, God willing). October 2019 was my latest escapade to the mountain and believe it

or not, I landed on the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro, it was snowing then, I wore my Barong (Filipino Traditional Costume) and waved our flag. Much prouder indeed for my heritage and much sweeter this time for being able to scale Mt. Kilimanjaro twice. Which only probably a few have done. Nowadays I walk six miles to work then another 6 miles going back home. I spend some weekends climbing Mt. Baldy and other mountains around the States. And for as long as my health and body allows I intend to give inspiration to everyone who has a dream – to be relentless in its pursuit. MABUHAY!

THE BEAUTY OF LIVING GOD’S PLAN (LIVE IN PEACE FOR HE IS FAITHFUL)

(Part of the beauty of living God’s plan is to finally accept that we will never really fully understand why God does everything He does and why things happen, but still, we learn to follow peace one step at a time..)

One common mistake that we make is that we continuously pray and believe that eventually, our realities today will align with God’s word. Nevertheless, peace has still been constantly absent in our hearts.

Peace. It’s hard to find peace especially when life seems to be so chaotic. Sometimes, the realities of life pushes us to drift away and be dismayed forgetting that we have a faithful God.

But then, He is a loving God. When He put a seed in our hearts, we get to start to believe. He desires to make sure that our convictions about His faithfulness is strong like an anchor amidst challenging or stretching times. And one of the beauties of living His plan is to learn to believe that He is a faithful God and so we have to learn how to live in peace. 1. Trust in the Meantime - Maturity in God happens when we learn to trust Him in the meantime. The meantime is when we feel its too long or too early but in reality, His timing is always perfect. He sees things from beginning to end. So the mystery that is in our life is really the glorious reality that we have yet to walk on but has already been laid out in Christ.

PROVERBS 31 by Jhoanna B. de Guzman 98

2. Do your part and God will do His - We should always see Him greater

than the giant that’s in front of us. God is in control. We should do our part and surely He will provide, and He never lacks. 3. Let peace takeover you - Rest assured that God’s got us. Part of it is laying our burdens to the Lord and He will surely come and see us through. If we decide to believe and act that peace lives inside us, we don’t need to worry and be fearful of anything anymore. Instead, we should know that He is in control and that He knows what He is doing and He doesn’t miss a thing. So, all we have to do is to enjoy life because life is beautiful. This may signal the end of the year but remember that we’re just starting and scratching the surface of what He truly has for us. There is more that He wants us to experience and He won’t stop pursuing after us. By all means, live in peace, that’s the beauty of living His plan, we can learn to live in peace for He is faithful. Cheers to another year to see His faithfulness in your life and see the demonstration of His manifold wisdom and grace! n manilaupmagazine.com
