Two-Wheeling it in Bangkok (and Beyond)

By Dave Stamboulis I spent most of my early adult years on a bicycle. I rode around the world, I commuted, I gave up my car and automobile insurance, I pretty much organized my life around living on two wheels. However, settling in Bangkok over the past decade, I’d forgotten about the joys of pedaling, other than the stationary bike offered by my gym. Face it, Bangkok isn’t exactly known for being bike-friendly. Regardless of the efforts by the BMA to add more bike lanes and increase awareness, you have to either be an adrenaline junkie or else just plain foolish to get your jollies riding in slow gear around Krungthep. However, I recently decided it was time to get back into the saddle and opted for some local touring with SpiceRoads, one of Bangkok’s premiere bicycling companies. I was surprised to find some undiscovered treasures and plenty of quiet back roads, more than I ever would have thought possible here.

SpiceRoads runs bicycle trips throughout Bangkok, Thailand, greater Asia, and elsewhere in the world. Their motto, proudly worn on the jersey of our guide, Tom, says “See the world by bike.” The company is based in Bangkok and features well-trained guides and plenty of knowledge on all the best routes and local hotspots. Here in Bangkok, they offer trips to Chinatown, heading out to the morning markets before cruising across the river to Thonburi and checking out off-the-beaten-path cycling gems like the Princess Mother Memorial Park. Another trip explores the small waterways and canal paths of Bang Krachao, Bangkok’s largest open green space, a spot you’d never realize was just minutes from downtown and yet worlds away. I wanted something a bit more all-encompassing, so I opted for a four-day trip over a long weekend, taking in Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, and the floating markets around Damnoen Saduak. While I’d been to these places many times over, both as a tourist

and as a photographer, I got to see them in a completely new light as we slipped in to each destination unannounced via small roads and even single-track lanes that traversed coconut or tapioca plantations, with the only traffic being smiling farmers hauling their recent crops to market. Having a Thai guide allowed us to gain access and communicate in every little hamlet we stopped in and learn a bit about the locals’ lives, not to mention not really having to concentrate on navigating. Knowing how awful the traffic can be in many parts of the country, I was quite amazed to find us sailing along on almost-deserted back roads, even getting off road through the forest on empty dirt tracks. SpiceRoads has obviously done an extensive amount of planning and research to come up with these routes, and they make it a joy to ride a bike without having to worry about automobiles. While cycle touring is full of the sights, sounds, and smells of the road, and offers some great photo-ops, it also comes at the

expense of heat, dust, inclement weather, and one fairly sore body. Fortunately, SpiceRoads has arranged their tours to take away most of the discomforts of the road, and let participants just enjoy themselves while getting a great workout at the same time. All of their tours feature several support vehicles, including a minivan and a truck. The truck is used for transporting the high-end bicycles that the company gives riders (doing a perfect job of sizing each guest prior to the trip and personalizing his/ her bicycle) and the driver also thoughtfully stationed himself at any tricky turns or busy road crossings to ensure fast traffic was slowing down or that everyone made sure not to miss a turn. Additionally, there is a minivan used for transporting riders who might get too fatigued or, in our case, taking us between sights, as we covered three different areas of the region on our tour. The minivan is also equipped with a large ice chest, and riders pull in to the perfectly timed rest stops to find fresh fruit, cookies, ice-cold drinks, and even cold towels waiting, really making it seem that every whim has been thought of and catered to. In Kanchanaburi, we rode through sugar cane plantations next to the Khwae River, stopping to check out the Burma Death Railway line and all of its history. We cycled past elephant camps, languid rivers, and past abundant agricultural areas, learning about the crops unique to the area, such as tapioca, rose apples, and papaya. Our guide made sure we sampled just about every product we saw, ensuring a further connection to the land we were cycling through. We finished off the afternoon with a visit to Muang Singh,

a historical park full of 13th-century Khmer temple remains, looking right out of Angkor Wat, but without any of the tourists. Arriving with late afternoon sun on the temples and not a single tour bus in sight, it hit me that this was a way to see Thailand somewhat to the way it used to be, very local, and without most of the tourist hordes. On our final morning together, we toured most of the ancient city of Ayutthaya and its majestic temples. While the towering ruins were obviously a big highlight for many, I found myself gravitating towards the lesser sights; stopping at a local temple school to talk with the kids, or pedaling through a Muslim community that most obviously was not used to seeing foreign tourists, giving us big smiles and kind words of encouragement as we cycled through.

It’s encouraging to see that the local bicycle market has blossomed over the past several years. There are now several Thai bicycle magazines, numerous shops selling some pretty tricked-out new technology, and during recent holiday periods, I have met groups of riders exploring the Mekong or even grunting up the mountain roads around Pai and the far north. Perhaps there is hope for this car-mad nation yet, and the endeavors of SpiceRoads that help show off some of Bangkok and Thailand’s top attractions worth preserving, all seen on two wheels, is a breath of fresh air. IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME NOT THAT SERIOUS BUT CHRONIC, GET TO KNOW AND UNDERSTAND IBS

The symptoms of chronic abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea that do not respond sufficiently to medical treatment affect many people. What can people do if they have this condition, known as Irritable Bowel Syndrome? Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a disease frequently diagnosed as the culprit of many patients’ digestive problems. But, not surprisingly, these patients often misunderstand its symptoms, which are similar to other diseases, such as various stomach disorders, constipation and diarrhea. We talk with Dr. Suriya Chakkapak, a surgeon who specializes in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, to help you better understand the Irritable Bowel Syndrome group of ailments.

What is irritable bowel syndrome?

IBS is a group of symptoms occurring from bowel dysfunction, but in which no physical bowel disorder (tumor, cancer, inflammation, or other con-

ditions, etc.) could be identified as the cause, Dr. Suriya explains. IBS patients’ main symptom is chronic stomachache and abdominal pain, on and off for a period of over six months, in conjunction with bowel habit disorders. IBS symptoms categories: • Diarrhea Group; • Constipation Group; • Diarrhea Group alternating with Constipation Group; • Mixed type alternating with occasional complication and diarrhea. “Most IBS patients present with abdominal discomfort – particularly pain in the lower abdomen, either on the left or right side – along with constipation or diarrhea symptoms,” Dr. Suriya says. “In some cases the patient has loose stools or diarrhea continuously for many days, which

adds to his or her discomfort and anxiety. But a patient with IBS-related constipation or bound belly experiences symptoms differently than from general digestive problems. For example, a patient with a general disorder will have abdominal pain or discomfort simultaneously. However, after defecation, abdominal pain or discomfort symptoms diminish.” Patients with IBS symptoms have no other key indicators of a dangerous condition, such as fecal mucus or bloody stools, weight loss, vomiting, decreasing size of stools or rectal tenesmus (a feeling of constantly needing to pass stools).

Causes and diagnosis

Although IBS is the most frequently diagnosed bowel disease, the medical community has still not been able to identify its cause definitively. Doctors’ best estimate is that some unknown mechanism causes nerve sensitivity in gastrointestinal motility (the movement of food through the digestive system) in the alimentary canal.


Despite not knowing the root cause, physicians now understand more about IBS’s characteristics and effects so can better diagnosis it. “To diagnose, we start with blood and stool tests, the patient’s medical history and whether family members have colon cancer or gastrointestinal cancer,” Dr. Suriya says. “These procedures enable us to separate and classify symptoms to be sure that the patient has IBS.” Regarding using endoscopy (a tubular camera device that looks inside the digestive tract) to diagnose, Dr. Suriya says it’s not necessary if the patient has no obvious risk factors for more serious conditions. Risk factors that do indicate performing a colonoscopy include the patient being over 40 years old, which raises the risk for colon cancer, or a history of constipation for long periods. After these various examination procedures rule out a serious physical disorder, a doctor can then diagnose the patient with IBS.

that may lead to functional bowel disorder, such as: • Unhealthy eating habits, including irregular eating patterns (for example, skipping breakfast), taking high-fat and fast foods, or foods with little or no fiber; • Habits or activities that cause continual stress and anxiety; • Allowing abdominal pain to go untreated to the point where it becomes a chronic symptom. “Patients must be attentive to their condition and avoid behaviors that cause and aggravate IBS symptoms,” advises Dr. Suriya. “For example, if you have stomach pain after eating fat-rich foods, then you should avoid them. Also, to prevent gastrointestinal tract infections and their symptoms, avoid unclean food and water.”

Change your behaviors; it helps

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is not a life-threatening disease nor is it a signal of cancer. Patients with IBS

“How can I avoid IBS?” Irritable Bowel Syndrome results in poor quality of life for the 10 percent of people that suffer from it, from youngsters to adults, particularly, those of working age that live in urban areas. If you wish to avoid chronic ailments caused by IBS, follow this simple and common sense advice: 1. Treat yourself well and stay in good health by regularly taking exercise to build up your immunity against disease. 2. Avoid situations that cause stress. 3. Eat breakfast daily because that is the time when the colon functions best. Half an hour after finishing breakfast, take a walk to aid digestion until you feel the need to go to the restroom. This method will help the excretion cycle to return to normal. 4. When you have to go, go! The urge to have a bowel movement lasts for only two minutes, usually. If you hold your bowel movement for too long the urge passes and the stool in your bowel becomes solid as the intestine absorbs its water content, which causes constipation.

Because the symptoms cannot be completely cured, most IBS sufferers are in a state of ongoing stress worrying that they have a more serious disease. In practical terms, for example, IBS-related diarrhea interferes with patient’s daily lives because they have to go to the restroom so often.

Symptomatic treatment

Since IBS has no clear cause, the attending doctor focuses on treating the patient’s symptoms, such as prescribing laxatives, medicines that relieve abdominal cramps, antacids and antidiarrheal regimens. Keep in mind, however, that these treatments do not eliminate the underlying cause of IBS. Therefore, the patient may have to endure these symptoms repeatedly. Dr. Suriya suggests that since IBS’s cause is unknown, patients should avoid risky behaviors

“The best method to cope with IBS is to not think that it’s a dangerous disease,” Dr. Suriya says. “The more stress you have, the worse the symptoms get. Along with treatments doctors prescribe to relieve symptoms patients should adjust their behaviors in order to lessen symptoms and reduce the frequency of IBS-related events,” Dr. Suriya concludes. Irritable Bowel Syndrome requires time to cure. Knowing and understanding this disease helps people have a better quality of life.

The secret gigs coming to Bangkok’s living rooms Organiser Adam Sharpe told Mango Metro: “Sofar was launched a few years ago by some chaps in London, and they wanted to organise secret gigs because of their love of live music. Fast forward to today, and there are now Sofar events in 96 cities around the world, including Rio De Janiero, Buenos Aires, New York, Paris, Seoul, and now in Bangkok. It’s a voluntary movement of people doing this very much for the love to build an original music scene and expose them to global audiences.”

From nobody to somebodies Bangkok’s alternative rock scene is surviving the latest nightlife restrictions with ease as new bands seemingly emerge from nowhere overnight to capture hearts and souls. High on the breaking big list are Bangkok trio Babylon, who have a touch of the Silverchairs for those who can remember back to the baby-faced heroes of early ’90s grunge. The three members: Daniel Didyasarin, Gong Thepvipat and Ben Brooke, only came together eight months ago but are already gearing up to release their first single, titled “Nobody.” And they say they owe their rapid rise to warm support for some of the more established bands on the scene, such as Matthew Fisher and the Fishes and Panic Station. Fisher, through his Fatty’s Bar and Diner indie nights, gave the band their first break. “We don’t have a specific genre that we write for, so we probably loosely fit into the alternative segment,” Daniel told Mango Metro. Fellow member Gong, though, specifically cites the Californian ’90s ska and alternative rock band Sublime as being the motivating force that influenced him to pick up a guitar.

The hip hop adventures of TravelinMatt Bangkok as a hub for a unique, but credible, form of hip-hop music? It might seem unlikely, but that’s the view of a mainstay of the scene, DJTravelinMatt, aka Matt Hammond, a half Thai/ half American Philadephia native who worked with some of the biggest names in American hip-hop through record company and radio work before emigrating to Thailand in 2001. “I feel the Thai scene is like stepping back into the ’80s in New York. I wouldn’t say it’s completely different than anywhere else in the world, but it is unique because it incorporates the Thai culture, values, and traditional music. It’s a sound that is distinctive and makes me proud to be Thai and be a small part of it,” Matt says. “I really respect the B-Boy and graffiti scene here a lot, to me it’s so raw seeing kids breakdancing barefoot or using Thai paint, which isn’t very good, but they master it and come up with amazing art. I hosted Afrika Bambaataa here, and he calls me ‘Bangkok Bam’ because he says what is happening here is not much different than The Bronx in the early ’80s.” Matt is one of the few in Thailand who has direct experience working in American hip-hop and music generally, specifically in his case as a promoter of major parties and events in Philly. He promoted gigs by the likes of Wu-Tang Clan, Xzhibit, Dead Pres, Mobb Deep, and more at legendary venues such as TLA on South and The

Electric Factory.

After some personal tragedies deeply affected him around the turn of the century, Matt decided to drop out of the rat race and enter the Thai monkhood for a time. But his love of music returned, and he integrated himself into the Bangkok music scene, notably as a director at Q Bar, where he organised seminal gigs by the likes of Ice-T and Jungle Brothers.

Added to this is the fact that the heady days of large international DJ tours are more or less over in Bangkok. “I get called constantly by artists that are on tour and want to come back, but the environment in Bangkok is very different now. It’s not about big clubs now, it’s cool small bars. Sponsors aren’t giving out much money to cover costs. Clubs close early and all do the same things. It’s sad sometimes, I feel the scene I helped build is in many ways dying” he laments.

“In nearly 15 years living of here, I have brought over 100 of the biggest international DJs across all genres of music to Bangkok. It’s truly an honor to have worked with so many people in so many genres from Hip Hop, R&B. Neo Soul, House, Drum and Bass, Techno, Rock, Disco, Reggae, Dub step, and EDM.”Matt was also intimately involved with the creation of UB Radio, a place where many Thai DJs have established their careers. But after a working life helping others tread the boards, Matt is now returning to his first love: DJing. “ I’m currently DJing at the Beer Cap on RCA on Wednesday nights with my Ghettoblasters Crew, including DJ Tech 12. We play old school ’90s hip hop.

I use my Thai-American background as a base for the food, using some of what I learned from mom and incorporating a style that I believe Thai people and foreigners will appreciate. Everyone loves chicken,” Matt says.

Vesper’s Colin Tait In Bangkok’s growing bar scene, one cocktail spot stands out among the rest. Vesper Cocktail Bar & Restaurant offers the city the best in classics while simultaneously dazzling guests with innovative modern libations as well. At the helm of this one-year-old establishment is Scottish expat Colin Tait. We talk to Tait about his take on the city’s bar scene, what Vesper is all about, and what he likes to drink when he’s not busy crafting quality cocktails himself. How did you end up in Bangkok? I’d spent some time in China and really loved living in Asia, so I started looking hard for a position that would enable me to come back to the region. The Vesper opening was posted on the industry site Diffordsguide.com. I applied, and here we are. What do you think of Bangkok's bar scene? The energy in Bangkok is awesome and since I’ve been here, I’ve met some really passionate and excited bartenders. There are some really good bars, but maybe only three or four that are consistent in their drink delivery. I believe

the next two years are going to see leaps and bounds in cocktail-focused establishments. I’m hopeful this will lead to a larger variety of product entering the market. This is probably the biggest stumbling block to bartender growth, the lack of quality spirits available to play with, though it does encourage the bartenders to get more creative. What is your mission at Vesper? To give the guest the best experience possible, I want everyone that comes to Vesper to have a great time. Myself and the girls on the bar love introducing guests to new cocktails they may never have experienced elsewhere, but ultimately if you want to drink Piña Coladas all night, we will make sure they’re the best you’ve ever had and keep you entertained while you’re in our company. We are here to host you and make sure you leave wanting to come back. What is your personal go-to drink when you go to a bar? I love a good whiskey sour or a solid Old Fashioned, but nine times out of ten, you can’t beat a good pint.

Saraburi By Voicu Mihnea Simandan Day-trips out of Bangkok can be both fun and inexpensive. There is a score of nearby provinces that are worth visiting, even if just for a day, one of them being Saraburi. At just a bit under 110 kilometers north of Bangkok, Saraburi and the bordering Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima are both the best destinations for a short trip to central Thailand, especially if you’ve already visited the more popular attractions in Ayutthaya and Lopburi. Since it’s far more fun to explore and experience as many things as you can, I recommend that on your next day-trip out of Bangkok that you should check out the following three destinations: the sunflower fields and Namtok Chet Sao Noi National Park in Saraburi and the White Buddha at Wat Theppitak Punaram in Pak Chong. To be honest, the sunflower fields have become quite a funky fad recently and can even be found in Bangkok too. To explore the real sunflower fields that Thailand has to offer, then I suggest that you should visit any of the fields in Saraburi province! Here you can enjoy the sunflower fields in the quiet nature of the countryside and can even buy sunflower seeds directly from the farmers. However, while you take pictures and upload your selfies onto your social media accounts, beware of the many bees that also come with the territory. Plus, it would be

best to bring a hat along, as there’s no shade to hide in. The better-organized fields have a small entry fee of a mere 10 baht, which is well worth paying, keeping in mind that the money goes straight into the pockets of the local communities. So, now that you’re all hot and sweaty from posing in the sun, it’s time to cool down in the waterfall at Namtok Chet Sao Noi National Park. Located on the border of Saraburi and Nakhon Ratchasima, Lan Nub Dao Camping Ground is the perfect place to spend the early afternoon of your trip. An abundance of shops and food stalls at the entry of the national park make this a perfect lunch-break stop while the cool, shallow water of the nearby waterfall provides the perfect remedy to counter the hot Thai weather. Officially, the waterfall has seven levels, with


each level being between two and five meters high, but the photos in the brochures and on the internet are somewhat misleading. Don’t expect a huge, noisy waterfall, but rather, be content with a few terraced pools. Unlike other more popular national parks in Thailand, there’s no dual-price entry ticket for Thai nationals and for foreigners. As a matter of fact, there is no entry fee at all for anyone! The entire eastern part of Saraburi Province is covered by fairly high, rugged mountains with Khao Krok being the highest peak at 329 meters. Being out in the middle of nature would definitely make you want to go for a hike in the forest, but unless you plan to stay overnight or to give up experiencing the local culture in favor of the climb, then I suggest you visit the White Buddha at Wat Theppitak Punaram. Technically, located in Pak Chong in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, the temple is easily reached and is visible from Highway No. 2, just a half-hour drive from the waterfall. You can’t miss it as the huge white Buddha statue is embedded into the hillside bordering the busy road. To reach the statue, you’ll have to climb 1,250 steps up the hill by taking one of the two paths leading up to the statue. It’s a great idea to go up via the left path and come back down on the right side. The statue is called “Luang Por Khao”, which can be roughly translated as the “Spiritual Guide from the Mountain.” After you catch your breath from the rather long climb, you can enjoy the stunning panoramic view of the Saraburi fields.
