With an abundance of cheap airfares and daily departures, short escapes to nearby Asean countries have become the norm for overworked Bangkokians. Yet, while long weekends in Luang Prabang, Hanoi, and Mandalay get plenty of press these days, verdant East Java in Indonesia flies well under the radar. Accessed through Indonesia’s second largest city, Surabaya, just under four hours from Bangkok, East Java is filled with a wealth of beautiful natural wonders. The most popular destination in East Java, just several hours drive from Surabaya, is Mount Bromo, where an expansive surreal caldera sits up at 2,000 meters, containing three volcanoes, two of which are still highly active. The slopes around Bromo are covered in lush forest and copious vegetable gardens, as the fertile volcanic soil here makes Eastern Java an agricultural paradise. The big attraction here is a pre-dawn wakeup and jeep drive up to a viewpoint looking out at the smoking cone of Bromo and the whole caldera lit up by the sunrise, and the entire Bromo Tengger National Park is a trekker’s utopia, with trails overlooking the volcanic landscape, as well

as tracks across the aptly named Sea of Sand that wanders under Bromo, neighboring Batok, and the 3,676-meter-high monster volcano Mount Semeru. Further east is an even more amazing destination, the Kawah Ijen Plateau, where another volcanic caldera rises above the sea and is home to a turquoise-blue lake located in a pristine mountain setting. While the natural wonders at Kawah Ijen are reason enough to make the hour-long climb up from the parking lot worthwhile, even more astounding is the human element here. The crater at Ijen is full of sulphur and is one of only two spots on the planet where the sulphur is mined, soon to be processed for making cosmetics, whitening sugar, and other uses. In what is surely one of the most grueling jobs in the world, the local men that reside on the slopes of Ijen make their living by digging up the sulphur, and then carrying it out of the crater on their backs. The miners start work around two in the morning, while the temperatures are still cool and when the sulphur is bathed in an eerie

blue flame, which can now be viewed on guided tours. The interior of the crater constantly belches smoke and steam, and most tourists need the provided gas masks to descend the 500 meters into the “gates of Hell,” as the area is known, as the odor from the sulphur and gases can be overpowering. The miners chop loose large rocks of sulphur, which they then load into counterbalanced baskets and haul them out on their shoulders, ascending a precipitous and rocky trail to the crater rim and then back down to the parking lot, where trucks transport the sulphur to be processed in a nearby factory. The miners earn a paltry 800 Indonesian rupiah (less than 3 baht) per kilogram, and carry loads of up to 100 kilograms at a time. The miners make two trips up and down in a morning, earning a maximum of 100,000 rupiah (290 baht) for their efforts, and the only respite from their exhausting labor comes from cigarette breaks and the extra bit of cash they now make from tourists by selling small sculpted pieces of sulphur they have carved into souvenirs. Getting up to Kawah Ijen to see the blue fire, along with spectacular sunrise views, involves another early start, usually around midnight, and with a descent and ascent of the crater from the caldera top, most visitors will be up all night and morning, making for some exhausting trekking. After pushing the limits above the clouds in Java,

one does deserve a bit of pampering, and there is plenty of this to be had back in Surabaya at the Shangri La Surabaya (www.shangri-la.com, tel. +62-31-6003-8888), Java’s most elegant and pampering stay. This fashionable retreat specializes in personalized service, offers an exclusive Horizon Club for discerning guests, and has wellappointed luxury rooms with magnificent views in which to recover from your Javan adventures. In addition to its high standard of service, the Shangri-La boasts an enormous outdoor swimming pool, several gourmet restaurants, ranging from Chinese to Italian to Tex-Mex, and a sumptuous breakfast buffet. Weary travellers will surely want to take advantage of the trademark Chi Spa, a renowned and prestigious Shangri- La institution, where holistic massage and spa treatments will rejuvenate all of your aching trek muscles. The Shangri-La can also arrange a car and driver for tours up to Mount Bromo and surroundings. When you go, you need to know… From Surabaya to Kawah Ijen, it’s best to take the train to Banyuwangi, which offers comfortable executive class seats and is far faster than the local bus. In Banyuwangi, Trip and Treat – www.tripntreat.com/english – is the top tour agency, offering personalized eco-tours and sustainable tourism initiatives. They can set you up with drivers and guides on Kawah Ijen, as well as arrange trips to Bromo, or more off-the-beaten-

path destinations, such as the Meru Betiri National Park and Sukamade Turtle Sanctuary, where giant turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on the beach. For personalized photographic tours, Ijen Expedition – ijenexpedition.com – is run by the son of a local miner and is a great option for photographers seeking an inside look at the lives of the miners and surroundings.

Things are pretty clear in Thailand with regards to owning a gun. If you are a Thai national and meet all the conditions required by law – which basically comes down to being a citizen in good standing and in the possession of some noticeable wealth – then you can get a new Glock or a Beretta for up to one hundred thousand baht (or less than half of that for a second-hand model). I have personally never heard of any foreigner who legally owns a gun in Thailand, but it seems to be the custom for a foreign man who is married to a Thai woman to have the gun legally registered in their wife’s name. Since hunting is mostly illegal in Thailand and practically reserved to the very higher echelons of Thai society, then the only reason why you’d want to have a gun in Thailand would be to protect your home, your family and yourself (special permits are needed to actually carry a gun in public), or to use it for target-shooting sport. However, since the risks of owning and keeping a gun at home are high and the costs of buying a decent quality pistol or rifle are enormous when compared to Western standards, you’re likely better off not getting one at all.

Instead, forget about playing the lone 007 act and just call up all your friends to head over to a paintball or BB gun field where you can put on military-style fatigues, paint your face for camouflage, and be the Rambo you’ve always wanted to be. It’s much safer, and without a doubt, far more fun! If you live in Bangkok and don’t feel like driving all the way to Pattaya or Hua Hin for your dose of war games, then Combat Zone is the place for you. Sattawit Hanmatheekuna, the owner and manager of Combat Zone, has been involved in various shooting sports for over twenty years. “I fell in love with paintball a very long time ago when I first tried it out in Pattaya,” he remembers. Claiming to be the “best international paintball and BB gun field in Thailand,” Combat Zone is even recommended by the TAT (Tourist Authority of Thailand) as an adventure activity one should undertake while staying in Bangkok. In the many years that they’ve been operating, Combat Zone has managed to build a good reputation for both safety and entertainment. The protection masks they use are especially made for paintball and are of the very same brand that the aficionados of the game also use in the Unit-

ed States. Moreover, the masks are light, cover the player’s entire face, and prevent moisture from forming up inside the mask, thus they avoid fogging up the visor.

Cerebral Aneurysm:

What you should know about hemorrhagic stroke

Each year, cerebral aneurysms cause death and permanent damage to millions around the world. Here’s what you should know about the causes of hemorrhagic stroke, and what to do when a stroke occurs.

have a better chance of surviving a stroke, and there are better ways to limit its damaging effects. Unlike the more common ischemic stroke, which involves a clot or blockage, hemorrhagic stroke – one cause is cerebral aneurysm or brain aneurysm – results from the dilation or thinning of the wall of an artery or blood vessel in the brain that eventually tears or ruptures, allowing blood to flow into the brain.

It’s difficult to overstate the magnitude of the global threat: According to the World Stroke Organization (WSO), nearly 15 million people worldwide suffered a stroke last year, and half of them didn’t survive. Stroke and other types of cerebrovascular disease continue to rank at or near the top of the world’s The nature of the threat leading causes of death and disability. on blood vessels – even more so when the patient has high blood pressure or hypertension. A blood vessel already weakened by thinning of its wall is at risk of developing a balloon-like bulge susceptible to tearing or rupturing, an event that can cause severe brain damage or even death. “We can try to identity a probable cause for a cerebral aneurysm, but it’s difficult to know precisely why some areas of the arterial wall are thinner than others,” explains Dr. Somkiet Siriwimonmas, a neuroradiologist at Bumrungrad. “It can be due to a congenital abnormality or the consequence of another disease. While Thailand doesn’t compile statistics on cerebral aneurysm, it is estimated that the condition is present in about two percent of the population.” According to Dr. Somkiet, there are a number of aspects that add to the medical challenges of dealing with cerebral aneurysm: It’s impossible to determine when the aneurysm might rupture; most patients don’t know that they have an aneurysm; and so long as the blood vessel or artery doesn’t rupture, there won’t be any symptoms to alert the patient of the potential threat.

Accidental detection

Detecting the presence of an aneurysm is often a case of coincidence or chance. “Detection tends to occur in one of three scenarios,” notes Dr. Somkiet. “The aneurysm may be spotted by coincidence when a patient undergoes a CT scan or MRI while being diagnosed for an unrelated condition; sometimes it’s found after a patient experiences symptoms resulting from the aneurysm causing compression of certain areas of the brain; or it is discovered when the patient has been admitted after suffering an actual stroke.” The threat of cerebral aneurysm can feel especially ominous due to the reality that it cannot be prevented. Dr. Somkiet points out that while the danger has been described as a time bomb ticking away inside the head, “there’s no widely-used screening test to detect the condition, and the methods that are capable of aneurysm detection require expensive equipment, making their widespread use impractical. Even with advanced testing, it’s not possible to predict if or when an aneurysm will eventually rupture,” Dr. Somkiet notes. “But not all aneurysms end up causing strokes.”

Sisterhood to Success

By Samantha Gray-Proyrungtong Have you ever wondered why women always go to the bathroom together to ‘powder their noses’? Or why they tend to congregate in groups and giggle like a pack of hyenas? Or why we are absolutely compelled to call our female confidants whenever there is a pseudo-crisis? It’s simple, we need each other. Men may be quite independent in that they can strut around pretending to feel nothing, however it’s our god-given right, not to mention blessed hormones, to express our emotions and this translates to talking. Lots and lots of talking. So instead of burdening men with our ‘fascinating’ stories, we instinctively enjoy revealing our deepest thoughts to those of the same sex. And not only social talk, but business talk too. More and more women in this city are educated or self-educated and positioning themselves on the corporate and entrepreneurial ladder alongside

men. This means the old stereotype of women quietly sipping tea in cafes or bitching loudly at parties is mostly a thing of the past. The rise of successful women in this city means having to stay ahead, not only of men, but for representing the image of women all over the world. This requires giving professional and moral support to one another rather than conniving competitiveness. So if you’re new to the city or a Bangkok local or expat, there are many social groups and networks that run events for ladies that you may not know about. Here are the top choices we found, some more semi-serious, others more fun and frivolous. You’ll be sure to find your femme favorites and hopefully make a few lifelong friends along the way.

within three months, it went from an idea to six continents, 33 branches and now launched in Bangkok. Members’ occupations range from consultants, bloggers, entrepreneurs, CEOs, etc. Business in Heels plan to hold monthly events in Bangkok. The last event was held at Whisgars on May 21st, presenting some interesting speakers who inspired new ideas and inspiration!

Today, the complex that housed the Front Palace is located in its original position, north of the Grand Palace, with Sanam Luang in-between and flanked by Thammasat University and the National Theatre.

By Voicu Mihnea Simandan One of the most overlooked attractions in Bangkok is the National Museum, an institution that can offer something for everyone – Thais, expats, and tourists – to make a very nice long day absorbing Thai history and culture. Actually, to thoroughly explore the abundance of exhibits and the many buildings that house them all would require far, far more than just one visit!

In 1874, the Front Palace officially became a museum, and in 1926, it was named the Bangkok Museum. It is now the biggest museum in Thailand, boasting 38 national branches, and, according to the 2014 edition of Lonely Planet Thailand, it is also the largest museum in Southeast Asia. The entrance to the museum is on Na Phra Thai Road, and the ticket counter is found immediately on your left-hand side. With the ticket, you also get a brochure (in Thai or English) with the map of the museum compound, labeled with the names of the buildings and the kinds of exhibits shown inside. It’s not really necessary to follow a certain set route when visiting the museum, but it’s advisable to start with building No. 1 and then proceed to adjacent building No. 2 (entered by a side door). These two exhibition rooms, housed in the Siwamokhaphiman Hall, give an excellent overview of the history of Thailand from its beginnings leading all the way to the Bangkok period.

Although it is now run under the care of the Department of Fine Arts, the National Museum in Bangkok was actually a palace for the Siamese royalty in the past and was also known as ‘Wang Na’, or the ‘Front Palace’. The palace used to house the ‘Prince Successor’, a position that existed until the time of significant reforms in Siamese society, when King Chulalongkorn abolished this The indisputable pièce de résistance of the first title in the late 19th Century and replaced it with gallery is a massive four-sided stone inscription

called the ‘King Ramkhamhaeng Inscription’, which was listed in the Memory of the World Register by UNESCO in 2003. The inscription presents King Ramkhamhaeng’s biography, describes the city of Sukhothai, and records the invention of the Thai language script, which stands as the foundation of the modern Thai script.

All exhibits are detailed with both Thai and English explanations, and there are also a few interactive and multimedia displays. Apart from the major permanent exhibitions, some halls also house temporary exhibitions that are also worth visiting, especially as there’s no extra charge. Healthy Halal By Dave Stamboulis Additional photos by the Halal Science Research Center One great thing about Bangkok is the vast number of unique trades and businesses to be found here, making for new learning experiences all the time. I recently had the chance to pay a visit to the Halal Science Center at Chulalongkorn University and found out some fascinating facts about a subject I knew very little about. The halal food industry is a huge trade that a lot of folks probably don’t have a clue about. If you aren’t a Muslim, then most likely your only knowledge about halal is that it is a regulation pertaining to pork and alcohol, pretty much what I generalized it to be. While halal is an Arabic word meaning ‘lawful’ or ‘permitted,’ in the area of food, cosmetics, and general care products, it takes on a much more pro-found scope. The halal food industry is gargantuan. With 1.6 billion Muslims in the world comprising around a quarter of our entire population, it is pretty obvious to see just how large the market is. The current global market value of halal food and product exports is over 600 billion dollars, and with population growth rates and increasing middle class incomes steadily soaring worldwide, along with Islam being the world’s fastest growing religion, the implications for the future in this industry are enormous. Thailand is now the fifth largest halal food exporter in the world, trailing only Brazil, the U.S., China, and India, and it has plenty of room to grow. Associate Professor Winai Dahlan, director of Chulalongkorn University’s Halal Science Center in Bangkok, says that Halal food currently accounts for twenty percent of Thailand’s global food exports, and that the country still has vast untapped potential due to its wide range of raw materials, and he expects Thailand to become the third largest halal exporter in the world in the coming decade. Catching up with Dr. Dahlan (who has written over 2,000 articles on nutrition and lipid and fat science research and is ranked amongst “The World’s 16 Most Influential Muslim Scientists” in science and technology), he showed me around the super high-tech research center, where scientists do molecular testing for animal fatty acids and proteins or DNA (often used in
