Eating Well in the Fast Lane

Story and Photos by Dave Stamboulis

Bangkok has evolved in the last five years in ways I doubt most folks would ever have imagined. The former capital of jai yen yen and laidback fun is now fast and furious, with harried workers scrambling up the BTS steps to try to catch overpacked trains, fit in that extra hour at the office, and earn a bit more to keep up with the neighbor’s latest iPhone, as well as being able to afford a stop at the latest new local craft beer bar or food truck. Work and lifestyle habits here are starting to resemble those in most of the Western world, with minimal time to cook, let alone eat, and one look around the city makes one realize that not only are our wallets a bit fatter than five years ago, but that the same can be said about our waistlines. With meals becoming hurried affairs and yet people wanting to watch their diets, another niche market has been born, that of the diet delivery service. While we might not have nor make the time to cook, at least we want to be assured that in those free min-

Coming from the team behind Absolute Yoga, this healthy meal delivery service was started to cater to the demand for healthy eating for those whose schedules are too busy to allow for it. Serving up high nutrient and low calorie “superfood (nutrient-rich, unpro-cessed) meals that are abundant in organic vegetables and hormone free meats, Absolute Fit seeks to help customers reduce fat, improve their physiques, and eat a healthier diet. Director Claire Bostock says that people want a healthier lifestyle in Bangkok these days, and that the rise of preventable illnesses like high cholesterol and heart disease have made folks more aware of their lifestyle and eating habits. Bostock also says that (people see that) celebrities are able to get into good shape quickly due to having personal chefs tailor-making

ABDOMINAL PAIN AND DYSPEPSIA STOMACH: INSIDE AND INSIGHTS When someone suffers from abdominal pain, the term “dyspepsia” usually comes to mind. Indeed, it seems that most people call stomachaches and other abdominal conditions dyspepsia. But is it accurate to say that abdominal pain is dyspepsia? Moreover, what are the causes of abdominal pain and what types of pain are signs that you should see your doctor immediately?

Abdominal pain as a warning

Everyone has experienced abdominal pain, but in many different situations and various forms. The characteristics of abdominal pain cover a range of characteristics: tightening, contracting, squeezing, or just mild. These various kinds of pain are warning signs for a variety of diseases. According to Dr. Siriwat Arnantapunpong, a physician specializing in gastroenterology and hepatology, abdominal pain falls into two broad types based on the area in which it occurs. • Upper abdominal pain: above your navel, usually involves the stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, and pancreas. • L ower abdominal pain: below your navel, usually involves the large intestine, small intestine, appendix, kidney, and uterus.

“Gastroscopy is a favored method because it’s quick and effective. The procedure takes no more than five minutes.” –Dr. Siriwat Arnantapunpong • “When a patient complains of abdominal pain, the first thing the doctor asks is where it hurts so that he can narrow down which organs might cause it,” says Dr. Siriwat. • “Then the doctor focuses the examination and tests on those areas to promptly diagnose the cause and begin treatment as soon as possible.” Two types of disease cause abdominal pain: 1. Surgical conditions and diseases, such as appendicitis, leaky gut syndrome, intestinal obstruction, acute peritonitis or intestinal inflammation, intestinal cancer and gallstones. Open surgery or endoscopic surgeries are the only ways to treat these diseases. 2. Internal medical conditions and diseases, such as dyspepsia, flatulence, excessive stomach gas, chronic constipation, liver diseases, and intestinal infections.

Which kind of abdominal pain is dyspepsia?

Dyspepsia causes tightening, burning, colic pain around the middle of the stomach, above the navel or epigastric region (the upper central area of the abdomen). It can be both acute and chronic pain. Acute abdominal pain is severe pain that the patient has never felt until now. Doctors exercise caution when diagnosing and treating acute abdominal pain because other diseases, such as

8 mango metro

APRIL 2015

gallstones in the gallbladder or pancreatitis, can also cause this unbearable level of discomfort. Chronic abdominal pain is the most common level of pain. It comes and goes continually for at least a month. This pain is related to when and what people eat, such as feeling discomfort from being hungry or too full. This kind of pain is ordinarily bearable. With proper eating habits or a course of antacids, the condition should improve. Dr. Siriwat explains that stomach diseases that cause chronic abdominal pain include severe gastritis, peptic ulcer or gastric cancer. Among cases of chronic dyspepsia, they lead to these diseases at a rate of 20 to 25 percent. The stomach can also suffer from diseases even when there are no physical anomalies in the organ itself. Rather, the diseases and pain come from dysfunctions of the gastrointestinal system. For example, stomach pain can occur when stomach and intestinal contractions are out of synchronization, or there is excessive acid in the stomach, but not enough to be an ulcer. These conditions cause 70 to 75 percent of problems for which patients seek a doctor’s treatment. Acid-related stomach conditions, however, do not always come with abdominal pain. “Many patients come to see doctors because they vomit blood or have black stools caused by excessive acid, which causes open wounds and bleeding in the stomach. Another situation is

heartburn caused by reflux acid in the stomach that inflames esophageal tissue. In some cases, the inflammation rises up to the throat, causing coughing fits. All of these symptoms involve the stomach,” says Dr. Siriwat.

Diagnosis

To find and diagnose chronic abdominal pain, the doctor reviews the patient’s medical history and performs a regular physical check-up. The most effective and widely used method is gastroscopy. With this method, the doctor collects a tissue sample to find pathological lesions and search for the helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacterium, which causes many stomach diseases. The doctor can perform these procedures simultaneously.

Drugs don’t help? Suspect H. pylori Helicobacter pylori is the main cause of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastric ulcer, stomach cancer and gastric lymphoma. Data show that there are over 2 billion people currently infected with these bacteria worldwide.

“Gastroscopy is a favored method because it’s quick and effective,” Dr. Siriwat says. “The procedure takes no more than five minutes. The doctor gives the patient a safe, short-term sleeping drug before orally inserting the scope into the gastrointestinal tract. This method helps the doctor find the cause swiftly and immediately proceed to treatment.” Besides gastroscopy, the doctor may include a CT scan and ultrasound in the diagnosis especially if the patient has an acute condition. In addition to

In Thailand, about 40 percent of dyspepsia patients are infected with this bacterium. Cases occur mostly in the northern

and northeastern region where food often hasn’t been cooked well enough before consumption.

Treatment and prevention

For patients with peptic ulcer and gastritis, which are not caused by H. pylori, doctors prescribe antacids to decrease acid in the stomach and help the wound to heal faster. Doctors may also use medicines that protect stomach tissue. H. pylori ailments can be completely cured with a twoweek course of antibiotics. For stomach dysfunction-related dyspepsia doctors sometimes prescribe a drug called prokinetic. Prokinetic supports stomach and intestine movement and helps the stomach and esophagus function better together. Dyspepsia is not a severe disease. But if the patient neglects it many complications can follow such as stomach bleeding, perforation, and stomach obstruction, some of which can be fatal.

gastroscopy, other methods used to find H. pylori are a blood test or breath test, in which the patient simply has to exhale into a device.

Therefore, Dr. Siriwat advises that people should only eat food that is well cooked, clean, not too spicy, and consumed in moderate amounts. Stress control, alcohol and coffee abstinence, and caution in taking drugs that disturb the stomach are important factors in preventing dyspepsia. Follow this routine and your stomach will not suffer from dyspepsia.

No dawdling for these pains If you suffer come-and-go abdominal pain for four weeks or more, see your doctor. But if these conditions accompany the pain seek medical attention immediately: • Abdominal pain with vomiting • Changing abdominal pain such as burning pain turning into

squeezing pain, contracting pain or the pain becomes harsher • Anemia, possibly from losing blood through stomach wounds • Yellow eyes • Weight loss of over 10 percent within 1 to 2 months • Taking antacids for 1 to 2 weeks but showing no sign of improvement or suffering from other complications

MANGO NIGHTS Ladz’ (Last) Night Out It’s every band’s dream. You’ve established yourself out in the ‘burbs or a small country town. You’ve outgrown your hometown and the time has come to take a chance to get bigger. So you move to the big city. Except Bangkok’s The Ladz have decided to go one very big leap beyond this: They have decided to move an entire continent, in their case, to the United Kingdom. And they are having a going-away concert on Sukhumvit 8 to celebrate. So why the big move? According to drummer Mikey Croker, “While Bangkok is a bustling city full of excitement and adventures, unfortunately, these qualities don’t really carry over to the international music scene. The majority of bars and clubs will only take Thai cover bands to appeal to the plethora of travellers rolling through. We’ve already had a slice of success in the UK on the radio, and the opportunities there are endless if you’re willing to work hard.” Bass player Adam Gibson, the sole American in the group, adds “The reason we’re heading to the UK is a bit of a gut feeling mixed with support from the people out there. Which is amazing to me having never stepped foot there.” “I moved back to Thailand from Colorado in 2010 to write new material. I never really felt like getting discovered in Thailand was a possibility. I’ve always considered it as an opportunity to reach an international community that I’d have the chance at the same level as I would at home. When we hit the UK, we won’t have quite the cosmopolitan exposure that we do here in Thailand, but it’s a good challenge. It offers the chance to tour Europe and see what can come of it. We’re going to have to work our asses off and find out what we’re really made of. I can’t wait!” The band prepare to make their departure on a high, having recently performed what they see as a career peak as a support to touring act The Dune Rats, the highly touted Australian punk band. “I think we all learned a few things off those guys,” remarks Jon Steven Phillips, one of the band’s two singer-guitarists. “It was a great personal achievement playing at a ‘Popscene’ gig finally, after having been to see so many other bands play there!” Croker says that the audience should expect an eclectic night for their last gig. “The Ladz, as a songwriting quartet, are blessed with the ability to produce variety. Because each

member has a different focal taste in music, these styles all come out in unique tracks,” he says. “We’re all lovers of music and the beautiful way it can change a mood/atmosphere and spark life in the most dire of circumstances, and so with the tracks we play and the set we organize, we like to take the crowd on a journey, from rock, punk, britpop to triphop, reggae, ska to folk, indie, progressive and full circle back again!” Adds Gibson, “Right now, we’re coming out of a three-month stint of being a three-piece. Our guitarist/vocalist just came back from England. We’ll be re-establishing our sound as the full band over the next few weeks. If I had to make a guess, and don’t hold me to this, I’d say that this will be a “Greatest Hits” set. There will be a few tracks off of the “Just One Thing” EP, songs that were written during the production of the EP, and new material that has been battle-tested. People can plan on dancing, head banging, chilling and having a well-rounded good time.” The Ladz will be ably supported by three bands on the night: Panic Station, Fathers of Medicine and Babylon. ”But these bands should be not be classed as support,” says Croker. “They’ve worked extremely hard to hone their sound and produce some amazing work. Panic Station are our adopted fathers, having from the first days of ‘Det 5 Bar’ showed us the scene and helped us get a leg up from day one, and Fathers of Medicine, the brainchild of Jeff Baker, have stormed on the scene and in a short while, have really turned some heads.”

Gibson echoes Croker’s praise. “Panic Station is really solid. Sometimes they’re really upbeat rock ’n’ roll, other times they’re spacey, the next song might have some ’90s angst to it. I’ve always loved how well Ben and Thom work their vocal harmonies; they do really well swapping lead responsibilities on the guitar.” “When The Ladz were cutting our teeth and started gigging, we hit up open mic nights at Det 5 and we met Jeff Baker, the lead vocalist and guitarist of Fathers of Medicine. He was doing the troubadour thing with his acoustic guitar. I was outside when my ears perked up, and I thought, “Who the hell is that?” He’s taken his act from being a solo gig to being one of the hottest up-and-coming bands. Jerome and Kimmo elevated songs that were already badass. The guys keep getting better and better.” So do the band leave Bangkok with any memories they treasure or would rather forget? Croker nominates one such night. “Our best gig was a fateful Fatty’s Halloween night. On the bill with four other bands, only two, including us, showed up, meaning we had to play a longer set, and, shit, did it go off. The place was rammed inside and out. We played our set, got the whole room jumping – one guy even came and licked my arm as I was playing! “Finished the set, then two of us stayed on stage for a downing-pints contest. The place was so raucous the police came and had to shut the party down, resulting in Fatty’s losing their live music licence for six months!” The Ladz play with Panic Station, Babylon and Fathers of Medicine at +8 Bar in Sukhumvit 8 on 3 April.

MANGO BITES Great American Rib Company

32 Sukhumvit 36 / 02-661-3801 Central Embassy / 02-160-5705 www.greatrib.com

Just over 10 years ago, on the Fourth of July in 2004, the annual birthday of the United States also marked the birth of an American restaurant here in Bangkok.

“Did I really just eat all that?” And, yes, citizen, you did… and you liked it.

The proprietor, Wes Carroll, had been running another business on Sukhumvit 36 but kept longing for some real American barbeque, so he did what any reasonable person does who misses their food “back home” and launched his own restaurant right on the front lawn.

We asked if we could sample some of the top-ordered dishes, and out came a quesadilla (a Mexican cheese-and-meat filled flatbread crepe, if you will), chicken wings, pulled pork sandwich, beef fajitas (a sizzling platter of meat and vegetables grilled on a cast-iron skillet), and the clear star of the show – a full rack of pork ribs, which made the whole table stop and literally say “whoa!” in unison when it was served.

Jump to ten years later and the Great American Rib Company has since served countless racks of slow-smoked, hickory wood-smoked ribs slathered in thick, tangy (normal, bourbon, or honey, your choice) BBQ sauce and a whole slew of other yankee meat delectables that have left Americans, Thais, and really, any global citizen holding their bellies at the end of the meal saying,

Everything was tasty and some of us enjoyed some things more than the others. The general manager suggested that some Thais find the chicken wings a bit sour for their tastes, but no complaints at our table. But I think the highlights were the pulled pork and obviously, the ribs that are full of meat that falls off the bone. Sure, you could use a fork and knife (and some at the table

did), but we suggest you ‘go American’ and get your fingers and face messy and enjoy and relax on the huge wooden front-lawn deck located on Sukhumvit 36 (make a note of this location’s Margaritaville Thursdays, where you will find a dozen or so fruit flavored tequila cocktail options for 99 baht each) or luxuriate in the air-con at their latest newest branch in Central Embassy.

MANGO BITES

Dressed

It’s always about expectations, isn’t it, even if reality confounds those expectations. When asked if we’d review Dressed, a recent salad-sandwiches-smoothies entry to the Bangkok market, there was a bit of eye-rolling by the team at having to write up an international chain. Spoiler alert: At the end of the tasting, all pre-review hesitancy was misplaced, and everyone at the table went on about how delicious everything was. Okay, so review’s over then, right? Well, if you’ll hang in there just a little, we’ll expound a bit. Dressed is a bit of an unusual story in the founding of a chain. Started by a Michelin-starred chef a few years ago as a healthy eatery in Atlanta, Georgia in the U.S., rather than attempt to turn it into a chain in America during the Great Recession, the concept was taken to strong-economy Asia, specifically Hong Kong and Taiwan, where it took off. Now that the U.S.’s economy has rebounded, it’s expected that the chain will now take on its homeland roots for growth. An interesting note is that the Bangkok locations departed (and improved) layout and style of furniture and colors, and the improvements here are being sent back through to the rest of the chain. It’s a simple, nice, comfortable, relaxing place to eat.

The Mercury Ville (Ground), BTS Chidlom Siam Paragon (Ground), BTS Siam Empire Tower (2nd), BTS Chong Nonsi 02-204-2449 www.dressedthailand.com

We started by sampling just about all of the variety of fruit and yoghurt smoothies available. These are really quite tasty with some unusual flavors on hand – again, the ones we had the least expectations about, say Minted Avocado and Gingered Pear (and Peanut Butter & Jelly?!), were a few of the best of a good-across-the-board selection. Other highlights were the Mango Tango and Pretty Peaches.

Next, it was onto the salads. There are two ways to go here: Design-yourown, with almost 60 possibilities to mix and about 20 different dressings to, well, “dress” your greens. Or you can go with about 15 different chefdesigned creations. We sampled the Detox Antioxidant (with spinach, beets, broccoli, sundried tomatoes, other good stuff, topped with a blueberry pomegranate dressing), the Super Fit (spinach, guava, goji berry, turkey, etc., with a chili mango dressing), and the Seared Tuna (oak, asparagus, mushroom, capers, chipotle dressing). Again with the expectations, the meat-eaters in the group threw some side glances to each other at the sound of the first two, but once everyone dug in to all of the above, satisfied grunts were issued. Really, these are amazingly delicious. Following the salads were some sandwich samples – Chili Lime Chicken Panini (5 panini choices) and Prosciutto Baguette (5 artisan sandwich choices) – both satisfying in taste and filling. Bonus points for the perfect baguette. And then a nice Pollo Pomodoro pasta (about half dozen pasta choices and another build-yourown option with 40-ish choices). At that point, the only thing we didn’t try (and simply couldn’t we were so stuffed) was a wrap or designer coffees and teas. This isn’t a posh, pretentious place, but we would certainly say a step up from the omnipresent Au Bon Pain for some greens or a sandwich or even a simple pasta. It’s a casual meet-up or quick dining experience that will absolutely more than satisfy. The meateaters and veggie-heads all agreed that Dressed will become a regular stop for lunch or light casual dinner.

By consolidating both brands’ expertise, foodpanda plans to expand its coverage areas in Bangkok and other major cities as well as increase its portfolio of top-notch eateries to emphasize its leadership in the Thailand online food delivery market. Alexander Felde, Co-Founder and Managing Director of foodpanda stated, “foodpanda is very pleased to announce the partnership with Food By Phone. With our great mobile app and expertise in marketing combined with Food by Phone’s strong and reliable delivery infrastructure, hungry customers in Bangkok will be able to experience the deliciousness from top local restaurants delivered right to their doors better than ever before.” The two companies will share their resources and expertise with the aim of bringing more choices of delicious cuisines as well as a better customer experience to customers in Bangkok. PARTY NIGHTS at Royal Oak Thursday May 7th 6:30-8:30pm

By Voicu Mihnea Simandan Thailand is famous (and infamous) for many things. From white-sand beaches to highly ornate temples, from congested traffic to corrupt officials: the Land of Smiles has it all. But you don’t have to be living in one of the large city centres like Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Phuket to experience what Thailand really has to offer. Short day trips from any province can provide you as many opportunities as your travel time will allow. One such province is Prachin Buri, located at about 135km northeast of Bangkok in the valley created by Prachin Buri River and the mountainous area of Kao Yai National Park. A quick Google search will list tens of attractions that one could choose to explore on a one-day visit to the province. I recommend visiting three very distinct but highly engaging attractions: Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Building, a two-story baroque-style mansion; Yusuksuwan Museum, a private museum with over 10,000 antique lamps; and Khao Ito waterfall within the Pa Namtok Khao Ito National Forest. It is no secret that soap operas are one of the

20 mango metro

APRIL 2015

major means of television entertainment for many Thai people, so when the set of one such series is a famous building which can be regularly visited, then you get a combination of both education and entertainment. This is the case with Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital and the European style building of the same name, which was not only the set of a popular soap opera but it’s also the centre of traditional Thai medicine. Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Building was built in 1909 to serve as the residence of King Rama V on his royal visit to Prachin Buri Province. The hospital was built some decades later in 1941 and it became the 19th hospital ever built in Thailand. The baroque-style building is very well-maintained and, apart from being a great location for photo opportunities, it is also a centre for learning about traditional Thai medicine. This attraction seems to have it all: a museum, a herb garden, an old pharmacy that sells traditional Thai medicine, and there’s even a massage corner. The adjacent hospital combines the old and the new by applying traditional Thai medicine in their daily practice and collecting, storing and distributing Thai herbs. With a

collection of over 2000 species of herbs and a great archive comprising of about 800 treaties on traditional medicine, Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital lives up to its legacy. The hospital is located on Prachin Anuson Road, just off Highway 3069 and there’s no entry fee. To find out more about the history, services and the products they have, visit their bilingual Thai-English website at www. abhaiherb.com. The next destination is a more light-hearted one: Yusuksuwan Museum, which is also known as the Lantern Museum. The museum was named after its founder Narong Yusuksuwan, a scrap-metal dealer, who made his great collection of lanterns open to the public. La pièce de résistance is the pressurized paraffin lantern which is on display in amongst the thousands of others, covering entire ceilings and visible in all three main buildings and the barn that make up the museum grounds. But there are also more things on display, not just lamps. It seems that Khun Narong was a well-rounded hobbyist as his collection is also comprised of antique radios, clocks, cameras, fans, furniture, bicycles, mil-

itary helmets, coins, banknotes, amulets, religious texts, lottery tickets, cans, toys, books, motorbikes, computers and many other little trinkets. This can be a bit too much to take in, all in one view, but I do believe that the greatest value the Lantern Museum has to offer is the several stations where it reproduces the Thai lifestyle of several decades ago. For example, you can explore an old barbershop (with scary-looking sharp razors on display!) or at the tea station you can try to imagine how Thai tea was made during your grandma’s time. There’s even a small zoo area with some large birds crowded in small cages and a rather sad-looking crocodile in a concrete pit. But the grounds of the museum are well organized and there’s literally something to look at in every part of the museum. You’ve also got a few photo stations and funny signs to pose next too, plus a souvenir shop for you to buy some quality memories. Yusuksuwan Museum is located at 135 Prachintakam Road and the entry fee is 80 baht for adults and 40 baht for children. Unfortunately, the museum has a two-price policy and the tickets are double the price for foreigners, but you can get the local Thai price if you show your Thai driver’s licence or your work permit. Their Thai language-only website (www.yusuksuwanmuseum.com) gives more information about the history of the museum and has some great photos of the items on display.

Your last destination for the day should be somewhere out there, in and amongst nature. You should take full advantage of the natural environment of Prachin Buri and visit the Khao Ito waterfall. Located inside the Pa Namtok Khao Ito National Forest, the waterfall is not that easy to reach, but once you’re on the right road, it can be a very enjoyable hike up the mountain. The forest covers an area of almost 22 square km and it can be a great place to have a picnic under the shade of its natural vegetation. Khao Ito waterfall is most spectacular during the rainy season, but during the rest of the year there’s still a quiet flow of water moving over boulders of various sizes and a few waist-deep pools where you can splash some water on yourself and your travelling companion(s). If you’re up for more exercise, you can go for a brief hike to Pah Hin Son “scenic spot” or if you have your mountain bike with you, you can take it for a ride on a specially designed bike trail. To reach the waterfall, follow the signs to Chakkraphong Reservoir but go further more up the road (for less than a kilometre) and get ready for the climb. There is no entry fee. From Bangkok, Prachin Buri can be reached by bus from Mo Chit 2 terminal, by train from Hua Lampong train station, and by minivan from Victory Monument. If you own your own vehicle, then simply drive up to Phahonyothin Road and follow the signs.
