During the month of September, Pastor Greg will take an in-depth look into the book of Luke to explore four different ways that four different people connected with Jesus. I like to connect with Jesus through prayer. Similar to “The Sinner’s Way,” in Pastor Greg’s sermon on September 29. Through prayers, I find God’s abundant grace. I also like to connect with Jesus by reading the Gospels —Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Each book has a different tone, and I can connect with Jesus’ words, parables, and prophecies in different ways. How do you connect with Jesus?

Connect in service. During the entire month, we’re hosting a food drive for local pantries. Stop by the Faith in Action table on Sundays to pick up a bag. Connect over a meal. Each Wednesday, beginning September 11, at 5:15, families and friends are welcome to join us in a meal before small groups and classes. See what’s on the menu on page 4. CHILDREN IN WORSHIP BY SALLY CLEVELAND
T
hen Jesus called for the children and said to the disciples, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I assure you, anyone who doesn’t have their kind of faith will never get into the Kingdom of God.” Luke 18:16 On a Sunday morning, chances are that you have sat next to, in front of, or behind a child who was busily engaged with worship materials created especially for him. Children attending MUMC are learning to follow the rituals and routines of the worship service; putting stickers on the places in the bulletin when we sing and pray, highlighting the times when we stand, and placing a red heart or their offering envelope in the collection plate.
Including our children with the rest of God’s family in worship is very important because children learn to worship by worshipping! As children learn about God’s love and hear stories from the Bible read and interpreted, they begin to understand worship as a place where God may speak to them and where they may speak to God. By attending worship services, they will discover that they are valued as persons by God as well as by their church family. Please express your joy when you notice children in worship. A smile from you will do wonders in assuring children (and their parents) that they are loved and welcome. Appreciate the special gifts children bring with them to worship, especially their desire to be a part of our church family and to worship with you. Help to support and nurture parents as they strive to model lives of faith for their children and make this very important commitment . Let’s welcome all children in worship!

Nancy Miller has been a Christian education director and consultant, high school English teacher, district curriculum coordinator and adjunct faculty member at SLU, where she earned a PhD in Education Administration and Curriculum. “After studying and teaching the history and development of British literature, I was drawn to study early Christian writings, the development and selection of our New Testament, and how these writings affect our views of Christ and His church today.”

CHILDREN’S CHOIRS M BY LORI BORGER
anchester UMC Children’s Choirs provide an engaging environment for children that encourages musical, spiritual and personal growth through education, fellowship and outreach.
Our children’s choirs are a lot like youth group for elementary ages. We love singing in worship monthly, but we also enjoy fun fellowship activities. We help others through outreach opportunities, and create lasting connections to the church and to friends through shared experiences.

While the intellectual, social and personal benefits of singing in a choir have been well documented, we’ll let our choir kids and parents speak to the experiences they’ve had: “I can’t wait for Wednesdays, because I know I’ll get to come to choir!” “My son chose to miss a ballgame in order to NOT miss choir - that says a LOT!” “We don’t want choir to ever end - and I mean the kids AND us parents!”

Amy has attended MUMC since 1999. A graduate in Psychology, Amy has a passion for both children and music and has been involved with both throughout her life. This is Amy’s second year directing SonShine Singers, after being a longtime choir volunteer. Amy and her husband J.D. keep busy with four children in preschool through 8th grade.

Carol Choir Director (2-3)
Kelly was baptized at MUMC, moved away and returned in 2000. She is in her ninth year as a Circle of Friends Preschool Music Teacher, and she’s also a former SonShine Singers director. Kelly’s beautiful voice has been a part of MUMC’s One Voice Praise & Worship Team for many years. She and her husband David have three grown daughters.

Music Makers Director (4-5)
Lori has attended MUMC since 1993. She began working part time in Music in 1994, and is now a full time Director of Drama Ministry & Children’s Music Ministry. Her work draws on her love for and training in music, theatre, elementary education and ministry. Lori and her husband Bill have a grown daughter and son.

A LOOK AHEAD:

T
he youth of MUMY completed their mission trips for summer 2013. They worked very hard and did great things. Please read on for synopses of their summer travels and activities. MISSION TRIP TO SAINT LOUIS | JUNE 10-13 This trip was specially designed for sixth and seventh grade students who have had little exposure to mission trips, time away from home, or distant travel. The group stayed at Manchester UMC for the duration and completed mission work in and around the St. Louis area. Students landscaped the backyard of the Manchester Center, cleaned the sanctuary and served lunch at The Bridge, boxed food goods at Saint Louis Food Pantry, took care of animals at the Humane Society, among other good works. MISSION TRIP TO NEW ORLEANS | JUNE 22-29 This trip was attended by high school students with experience in the mission field. They worked with the Saint Bernard Project to perform disaster clean-up and completed badly-needed home construction projects. The Missouri Conference of the United Methodist Church, the sponsoring organization, also provided cultural learning experiences during the work week. WORSHIP ARTS CAMP | JULY 1-3 Worship Arts Camp was a brand new initiative. Led by our own students in mid and senior high, we invited kids going into grades 3-6 to our church to learn about worship arts, including puppets, dance, drama, guitar, “stomp� percussion, singing, and visual arts. Our campers prepared a worship experience for their family at the end of camp.
MISSION TRIP TO CHEROKEE NATION IN VIAN, OKLAHOMA | JULY 8-13 This trip was a wonderful opportunity for mid-high students to learn from a different culture and to share the love of Jesus Christ with those who are very poor. The cultural center is always a great attraction, and we played, danced, and ate with the native people! Our work during the day was to repair homes and churches. Students stayed with their church group, but there were many other United Methodist Churches working at this site. SPIRIT CAMP | JULY 27-AUGUST 1 Spirit Camp celebrated its twenty-fifth year with fun and worship at beautiful Blue Mountain United Methodist Camp. Our mid-high students enjoyed great accommodations and food, leadership from MUMC adults and senior high students, swimming, a float trip, mission work, games, and great devotional time. SIXTH GRADE BOOT CAMP | JULY 28-30 This event was an opportunity for incoming sixth graders to learn all about Manchester United Methodist Youth; a three-day orientation event designed and taught by our MUMY sophomores. This event was aimed at allowing our newest MUMY members to feel comfortable in a new atmosphere, while allowing them to get to know some friendly leaders. Boot Camp ran consecutively with Spirit Camp because incoming sixth graders are too young to attend Spirit Camp, and sophomores are too old to be Spirit Camp campers and too young to be Spirit Camp counselors.

EDUCATION & SERVING OPPORTUNITIES GROCERY STORE FOOD DRIVE: Saturday, September 7
Manchester UMC volunteers will visit area grocery stores to solicit food donations to benefit Circle of Concern and Kingdom House. Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome. This is a great family-friendly service opportunity.
FALL FOOD DRIVE: September 1 - September 30
Bring in non-perishable food donations to benefit the food pantries of Kingdom House and Shalom House. Drop off your donations at the Faith in Action table in the Main Narthex on Sunday mornings or anytime throughout the week. Small Groups and families can sponsor one Sunday of the food drive! Your group would: • Receive food donations • Sort and box all donations • Help load the filled boxes into vans for transport to Kingdom House • Unload all boxes at Kingdom House • Have lunch at Kingdom House • Stock the shelves of the food pantry with food donations Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Another great family-friendly service opportunity.
FOOD STAMP CHALLENGE: September 8 - 14
The Food Stamp Challenge is a commitment to live on the food budget of the average food stamp recipient for one week. Participants will receive info on the challenge and reflect upon their experiences at manchesterumc.org/food. This is an independent experience, allowing participants to participate in their homes and reflect on their experiences online. The nationwide average monthly benefit is $133.79, which breaks down to approximately $31.50/week, $4.50/day, or $1.50/meal. Can you shop and eat on this budget for a week? To get a deeper, more personal understanding of what it takes to live at/below the poverty level, watch the documentary “A Place at the Table” together on September 15th at 7 p.m. at church, and join in the discussion after the movie on how we can help make a difference.
POVERTY BANQUET: Sunday, September 22 | 12 - 2:30 p.m.
A Poverty Banquet is a tool that enables participants to view poverty from different angles in an experiential setting. Participants will be guided in reflection and conversations surrounding issues of poverty and food security over lunch. 14 | MANCHESTER UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

MUMC WALKING GROUPS Join in for exercise and fellowship each Tuesday and Thursday at 7 p.m. We’ll meet at local parks, open with a devotion and prayer, and then walk at our own paces. You may leave when you’re finished or stay for a while and visit. A complete schedule, including walking sites will be sent upon receipt of your registration. Friends and family are always welcome!
