Manatee to host Jan 26 meeting for local non-profits wishing to apply for 2016-17 funding Manatee County will host a Jan. 26 meeting to help local non-profit agencies interested in applying for Human Services grants to assist Manatee County residents.

Manatee seeks public feedback in December, January for Parks Master Plan Parks lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will have a chance to shape the future of parks, green spaces and trails throughout Manatee County during by providing input over the next two months. Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources Department, working with consultant KimleyHorn and Associates, will host six upcoming meetings to gather public opinions that will be a part of the county’s Parks Master Plan. When complete, the Parks Master Plan will provide a 15-year blueprint for the county to develop and maximize recreation and open space amenities.

“During these meetings we’ll be giving an overview of the existing (parks and green space) conditions and asking people what they want to see in the future,” said Charlie Hunsicker Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources Director. “We’d like to get a wide diversity of comments and for people to tell us in their own words what their expectations are for what a quality parks system looks like.”

The meetings will be held at the Palmetto Library (923 6th St. W., Palmetto.)

Manatee County accepting applications for Citizens Oversight Committee for Infrastructure Sales Tax Manatee County is accepting applications for seven seats on the newly constituted Citizens Oversight Committee for the Infrastructure Sales tax.

The committee will meet periodically to prepare an annual report to the Board of County Commissioners which reviews expenditures of the half-cent sales tax which voters approved in November.

Four of the initial members will serve three year terms, and three of the members will serve two year terms. Thereafter, all members will serve two year terms.

Qualified applicants must reside in unincorporated areas of Manatee County. All meetings will be publicly noticed.

What is D-Fy? Drug-Free Youth (D-Fy) celebrates Manatee County youth (grades 9-12) by rewarding them for making health, positive choices by remaining drug free. D-Fy also helps to grow a community culture to support these kids.



D-Fy is a community initiative which reinforces the positive and healthy choices of our youth, including a commitment to being drug, tobacco and alcohol free. The business partner agrees to be a supporter of this initiative by offering the following discounts to youth who present a valid D-Fy membership card from any D-Fy chapter:

All businesses that develop drug-free workplace policies OR provide hiring preference, internships or apprenticeships to D-Fy members will be spotlighted both locally and regionally in press releases and special community events. Additionally, this status will be prominently noted in the business partner registry as a “Walk the Walk” partner.

More Than Books At Your Library So often I hear even frequent library customers say “I didn’t know you had that!” when I tell them about a new resource we offer, or a cool event taking place. And I can’t help but wonder how surprised people who have not visited the library in years would be if they knew of some of the services and programs the Manatee County Library system provides. Libraries have become lively community centers promoting learning, creativity, personal and professional growth, and just plain fun. ‘ Here are just a few of things our libraries offer that you might not be aware of: If you click on the Research & Learning tab on our web page you will find dozens of databases, accessible from home, to assist you in researching health information, genealogy, historic newspapers, business and legal information, and even home repair. They are easy and fun to use. If you’d like to learn a new language you can select the Mango Languages database and choose from 72 languages. Our Learning Express database features practice tests for college prep (SAT, ACT, AP etc.), Citizenship, ASVAB (military), GED, and dozens of career tests. And gone are the days of those auto repair manuals the size and weight of cinderblocks. Instead, try out our Auto Repair Reference Center with repair information and wiring diagrams for more than 37,000 vehicles from 1954 to current models! And all of this is free with your library membership.

Our libraries are big promoters of lifelong learning. Every branch offers classes, workshops, and demos on an array of topics. There is a Summertime Blues Workshop underway with professional musicians at the Central Library and numerous STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs for teens system wide, including an Arduino workshop. On our events calendar you will also find classes for Spanish, sewing, crochet, and cooking, just to name a few. There are also art and poetry workshops and chess clubs.

Libraries are also a great place to learn about other cultures. Our summer programs for children include Indian dance, Australian didgeridoo, and Japanese drums. We have a large collection of travel books in print and electronic formats as well as DVDs. And the newly formed Downtown Library Voyagers will be learning about Ireland through a series of library programs, and then actually visiting Ireland next May! Job seekers will find the Career Source Suncoast’s Mobile Career Center parked at scheduled times at the libraries, and the Central Library will be hosting a hiring fair with over 20 local companies scheduled, September 12th from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Small business owners or those interested in starting a business will benefit from the workshops given by SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) at our libraries.

For free entertainment anytime, click on the library’s link for Hoopla and you’ll have access to thousands of e-books, movies, music, audiobooks, TV shows, and even comic books.

And, of course, if you’re looking for books we still have hundreds of thousands of them on our shelves. Come visit us!

Turning outward is fundamentally an orientation - it is a stance we assume, a posture, a mindset. Only when you are turned outward can you truly see and hear others. Only then can you have reality in your line of sight. It is when we are turned outward that we can discover our shared aspirations and make progress together.

But nothing is automatic. Too many of us have chosen to turn inward, away from one another. Sometimes this happens without us even knowing. The concerns and hopes of people in our communities can get obscured, even pushed aside. The desire to position ourselves or our own organization or group takes priority. Our daily lives become consumed by creating long lists of activities. At times we can lose our sense of purpose.

All of us are in search of a path that allows us to make a difference in the world, become part of something larger than ourselves. We all want to achieve a sense of meaning in our own lives. But to find that path - and make it real - you must turn outward. After all, you cannot pursue your true desires if you are facing in the wrong direction.

But once you turn outward, then what?

You must become more intentional in the judgments and choices that shape your actions. Each of us must decide whether we will pursue the path of the status quo that too often is filled by division, disappointment and frustration - or choose an alternate path of possibility and hope. For instance, will we choose to authentically engage people, or simply offer lip service to such engagement? Will we focus on issues that matter to people, or mostly pursue some other agenda? Will we produce positive impact in people’s lives, or become consumed by endless activities? This alternate path is about stepping forward and accounting for the pledges and promises we make.

Being intentional means becoming more deliberate in your actions. It is to make choices about whether to take one course over another. It is to be more attentive to your surroundings - that you hold a greater awareness about who we are, who we want to become, and the kind of change you seek to generate. In these ways, being intentional is about being more directed.

But I am moved most by the following definition of intentionality - which comes in two parts. The first involves what I

think of as “wakefulness.” I love this word. I encourage you to consider its meaning and potential for your own engagement. Wakefulness suggests that we are alert. That we come to the world awake! Our eyes are wide open, our hearts are open, and we are willing to see and hear that which is around us. In being wakeful, we are ready to engage, to be with others.

Such wakefulness stands in direct contrast to the blinders we sometimes put on so that we don’t have to worry about certain issues or matters, and the great lengths we sometimes go to take-in only that information that confirms what we already know or believe. Wakefulness is the opposite of inwardness. It is about being present, especially for those things we may not like or want.

The companion to wakefulness is “moral accountability.” All actions have consequences and ramifications. So, while we cannot control everything in our lives, we must recognize - and embrace - that we actually exercise power over much of what we do. This isn’t an absolute power, of course, but enough that we must account for our actions. We must know that we have the potential to positively (or negatively) impact people and our surroundings.

That each of our small efforts matter and have ripple effects. So, it is with each judgment and choice you make.

One reason why I so cherish the notion of moral accountability is, that when we live into it, we begin to see our own potential to shape the world around us.

We become actors, not mere spectators; shapers, not bystanders; builders, not complainers or claimants.

Each day we make scores of choices, and while we cannot control everything, if we become more intentional about the choices we do make, then we can have far greater impact and fulfill our own personal desires. There are six “intentionality tests” that sit at the core of turning outward: • Turn Outward: Am I turned outward toward the community?

• Aspirations: Are my actions rooted in people’s shared aspirations?

• Authority: Could I stand up on a table and talk to people about their community, their aspirations and concerns, and would they believe me?

• Authenticity: Do I reflect the reality of people’s live and do they believe I have their best interests at heart, even when we disagree?

• Accountability: Am I living up to the pledges and promises I have made?

• Urge Within: Am I staying true to my urge within?

The idea and practice of intentionality lives throughout the Harwood approach. It is about what we choose to make of ourselves; about what we choose to do with ourselves. It is about how we bring our full selves to be in relationships with others. In this spirit, when I speak of intentionality, my goal is not for you to adopt wholesale my ideas - or anyone else’s. That would be the very antithesis of intentionality. Instead the process of deepening your own intentionality requires you to take ownership of the judgments and choices before you. You must find, and declare, your own sense of purpose. You must choose your own course of engagement with those around you.

What I am asking you to do is to seize this intrinsic power within you.

PIRATES ANNOUNCE 2017 SPRING TRAINING SCHEDULE AND TICKET PRICING Pirates and Blue Jays to play two games in Montreal on March 31 and April 1 The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced the team’s 2017 Spring Training schedule and ticket pricing for games at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Florida, the Club’s southern home since 1969. The 32-game Florida schedule consists of 18 home games, which includes a World Baseball Classic exhibition game against the Dominican Republic on Wednesday, March 8.

The Pirates are scheduled to open their 2017 Grapefruit League season with two games on Saturday, February 25; they will host the Baltimore Orioles at 1:05 p.m. and will also play the Rays in Port Charlotte at 1:05 p.m.

A total of five of Pittsburgh’s final six Grapefruit League games are scheduled to be played in Bradenton, which will include back-to-back night games on Monday, March 27 against the Minnesota Twins and Tuesday, March 28 against the Boston Red Sox (both 6:05 p.m. starts).

Prior to the regular season opener against the Red Sox in Boston on April 3, the Pirates are scheduled to play two games against the Toronto Blue Jays at Olympic Stadium in Montreal on Friday, March 31 at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday, April 1 at 1:05 p.m.

The Pirates drew a total of 103,762 fans to 15 spring training home dates at McKechnie Field in 2016, the secondhighest season attendance figure behind the club-record 106,038 posted in 2015.

Legal Aid for Victims of Fair Housing Violations, Eviction & Foreclosure Gulfcoast Legal Services (GLS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit legal aid firm which helps low-income residents of Bradenton with a variety of housing related legal matters.

“Kinship and Interactive Development� (KID) Program This community event will take place every Wednesday (10am-12pm) at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Rubonia, FL. KID is interactive program with a cultural-based curriculum to develop, instill, and renew technological and educational life skills among adults in the community. The program will offer exercise activities, interactive BINGO, and technology assistance classes. KID is founded on grandparents and parents developing and engaging educational life skills to empower the community.

Employment



Mental Health Counseling - We offer short term individual and couples counseling sessions for adults over 18. By appointment. We are unable to accept clients in crisis, substance abusers or those requiring medication.



Employment Coaching - Offering individual assistance in preparing for a successful job search. Includes resume preparation, interviewing skills and networking techniques.

Appointments are required.



Support Groups - The WRC offers a variety or weekly and monthly support groups including: Evaluating Unhealthy Relationships with HOPE Family Services ( Wednesdays 5:30 - 7:00 pm), Alzheimer’s Support Group (2nd Thursday of each month 2:30 - 3:30 pm), Addiction Support Group for Family & Friends of Addicts ( Mondays 6-7:30 pm) and Rediscover Joy.



WRC Career Closet - The WRC Career Closet offers professional clothing for women starting a new job or attending interviews. The closet may be accessed twice a year for up to five outfits and includes shoes and purses as well as clothing.

Donations for the Career Closet and the Unique Boutique are appreciated and accepted at the WRC Mon -Thurs from 9 am-6 pm



Parenting Coach - Individual parenting instruction and support sessions by appointment. Also specializing in high conflict situations such as divorce.





Latinas of the WRC - A weekly forum for Latina women to come together to discover skills, build self-confidence and find their own paths to success.

Career Source Suncoast Mobile Unit A mobile job search unit that is at the WRC on the 3rd Monday of each month from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The staff will help you post your resume with one of the most comprehensive web-based job databases within the State of Florida as well as many other web sites. This program now offers a bi-lingual service.





Mission Sisterhood, Girl Scout Troop #494 A Girl Scout Troop for group for Latina girls aged 12 - 17 years old.

Coming Soon! Basic Computer Classes - Basic Word, Excel and Internet classes are presented in an easy, open environment.

Legal  

Divorce, Separation & Family Law Workshops - These workshops are held every other month and include seminars on divorce and family law and gaining financial control of your divorce.

Ask An Attorney - Individual ½ hour consultation session with an attorney on issues to do with family law. The attorneys can help with Divorce, Separation, Child Custody, Division of Property, Alimony, and Child Support.

High Conflict Parenting - Workshops to help with communication during the divorce process as well as the conflicts that may arise when blending families.

Health & Networking     

Yoga & Zumba Style Classes - Three levels of yoga instruction are offered weekly Donna’s Dance Party - A combination of Zumba, 70’s, Motown music & more. All fitness levels. Wednesday 9am - 10 am.

Health & Wellness Workshops - These are held monthly and include classes on the use of natural oils and herbs and other health related topics Book Club - Two monthly book clubs are offered on the 1st Thursday of each month, one at 1:00 pm and the other at 7:00 pm.

Circle of Friends - A way of connecting with other women in the community for companionship. The group stays connected through email and then gets together for social events.

Unique Boutique of the WRC The Unique Boutique is an upscale, resale boutique offering gently worn, name brand, women’s clothing and accessories in a variety of sizes and styles. All proceeds from the Unique Boutique benefit the Women’s Resource Center of Manatee. The boutique is located in Jennings Arcade, on Old Main Street, Bradenton at 417 12th Street West, Bradenton . Hours Tues- Fri 11 am - 5 pm, Sat 10 am - 2 pm The Unique Boutique has a “Girls Day Out” on the 1st Thursday of each month where all items (apart from the 80% rack) are offered at 50% off. We greatly appreciate any donations of gently worn clothing and accessories such as shoes, handbags, jewelry and scarves.

The Women’s Resource Center of Manatee is open Monday - Thursday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and on Fridays from 9:00 am - 12 Noon.

Quick News Bites Free Medicare Counseling Offered to Seniors in Lakewood Ranch Medicare beneficiaries, their caregivers, and family members who have questions or concerns about Medicare and related health insurance topics have a new place to turn. The Senior Connection Center will be partnering with Meals on Wheels PLUS to provide Medicare counseling through the SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) Program. On the third Tuesday of every month, specially-trained volunteers of the SHINE Program will begin offering Medicare counseling at the new Daybreak Adult Day Center recently opened by Meals on Wheels PLUS office located at 10920 East State Road 70 in Lakewood Ranch.

Family Resources is also currently offering a FREE Family Resolutions Group. There will be two group levels: Elementary School and Middle School. Family Resolutions is a program that works with youth experiencing issues related to the divorce / separation of their parents or the introduction of a new step-parent into the family.

SHINE is a program of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs that empowers Medicare beneficiaries to make informed decisions about their health care coverage.

SHINE volunteer counselors through the Senior Connection Center provide free, unbiased information and counseling at sites across Manatee, Polk, Hillsborough, Highlands, and Hardee counties, and will now also help elders at the new Lakewood Ranch location.

In addition to traditional counseling services, Family Resources operates a FREE short term crisis shelter called SafePlace2B. This program is accessible 24 hours per day.

Youth ages 10-17 can obtain individual and family counseling services while in a residential setting on a short term basis. Our counselors will work closely with you and your child to identify core issues, solutions and longer term counseling services if necessary.

Every day SHINE volunteers answer questions about Medicare, Medicaid, prescription assistance, long-term care planning, and more. The new site at Daybreak Adult Day Center will allow the program to reach more community members who may be unaware of SHINE and the benefits the program offers.

SHINE volunteer counselors can even assist eligible Medicare beneficiaries to find programs that lower prescription drug costs or provide prescription drugs at no cost.

Free Counseling Services being provided by Family Resources, Inc. Family Resources, Inc. in Bradenton offers FREE counseling services to youth ages 6-17 and their families.

Families that have concerns regarding a child’s behavior can contact Family Resources and set up counseling services that will help address the core issues and work towards solutions for long term change.

selfless act performed by a person or people wishing to either assist or cheer up an individual person or people. Random acts of kindness are a means by which we make a deliberate attempt to brighten another person’s day by doing something thoughtful, nice, and caring for them.

Kindness is a way of showing others that they count and that even in the face of hostility and selfishness, you’re making a stand for kindness. By doing kind acts for others, you’re helping to create kindness-aware communities that value generosity of spirit and action and kindness toward others as essential parts of a healthy community.
