The Better Business Council (BBC) is a program of the Manatee Chamber of Commerce that helps address consumer concerns, publicize important scam information, and offer referrals for local businesses that are members of the Council. Here are just a few ways we can help you get the answers you need:

Local Business Referrals

Consumers can contact the BBC for referrals of local businesses. BBC members have been pre-screened and have publicly pledged to adhere to a higher standard of business and we proudly refer business their way.

Check Business Complaints

Call the BBC to see if the company you are thinking about doing business with has any complaints on record.

File a Complaint

Are you having a problem with a local business? Call us to file a complaint or for a referral of a resource that may be able to help.

Always Hire a Licensed Professional

Not sure if your contractor is licensed or required to be licensed by the State of Florida? Call the BBC or contact the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulations at 850-487-1395 or www.myfloridalicense.com.

Check Insurance

Make sure your contractor carries the correct insurance for the type of job required. Are they required to carry insurance and what type of insurance do they have? Do they carry insurance on their commercial vehicles and or Worker’s Compensation insurance? The BBC may be able to answer these questions or direct you to the right resource.

Be Aware of Scams

The BBC frequently publishes the most recent scams and we may be able to answer your questions on how to proceed if you think you’ve been scammed.

Handling a Complaint

Fortunately, most business transactions are handled professionally and without incident. On rare occasions, however, consumers can be disappointed with a company's product or service and feel the need to file a complaint. For businesses located in the Manatee County area, the Manatee Chamber's Better Business Council offers the following advice:

First, attempt to resolve the issue directly with the business. Often, the business is not aware of your dissatisfaction and will be eager to work with you to resolve the issue.

If efforts to reach a mutually satisfactory solution fail, you can contact the Manatee Chamber's Better Business Council (BBC) to receive a “Consumer Experience Report” complaint form. For businesses located/headquartered outside of the Manatee County area, contact the Better Business Bureau of West Florida at 800-525-1447 or visit WestFlorida.BBB.org.

The Better Business Council does not take either side in the dispute but works to facilitate communication between the company and the consumer, hopefully resulting in a satisfactory resolution.

In most cases, this process is successful and all parties are grateful for the positive result. In those rare instances when a reasonable solution cannot be obtained, the Better Business Council will advise both parties of their option to contact a professional mediator.

Don’t Get Scammed!

Consumer scams are rampant. Scams make for easy, and big, money for scammers. Billions of dollars are lost to scammers each year and affect both young and old. Scammers use the phone (landline and mobile), email, postal mail and the internet to trick you into sending money or providing personal information.

New scams pop up all the time and the Better Business Council wants to help you stay informed. According to the Federal Trade Commission, here are 10 ways to avoid consumer fraud:

• Know that wiring money is like sending cash.

• Read your monthly statements.

• After a disaster, give to only established charities.

• Talk to your doctor before you buy health products or treatments.

• Remember there’s no sure thing in investing.

While hiring an unlicensed contractor may provide a quick fix in the short term, it could result in serious and lasting negative consequences. It is illegal to hire an unlicensed contractor in the state of Florida, carrying a fine of up to $5,000. Licensed contractors have taken the time to acquire the appropriate education and the proper workers’ compensation and/or liability insurance and possess the necessary experience for their profession.

It is extremely important to be cautious when contracting for home improvements and repairs. Educate yourself, become an informed consumer, and protect yourself from dishonest persons who will use your misfortune to their advantage.

• Unlicensed contractors often target the uninformed and inexperienced, as well as the elderly.

• They solicit door-to-door, frequently traveling in unmarked vehicles.

• They give a post office box address instead of a street address.

• They are responsible for obtaining the necessary building permits.

• Avoid paying cash and any contractor who requires full payment in advance. Arrange to pay after the contractor completes the work or in agreed-upon installments.

• Do not sign off that work is completed until all work is finished according to your contract, and the contractor has cleared all permits with final inspection approval from the building department.

• If your contract exceeds $2,500, become familiar with the Florida Construction Lien Law.
