HISTORY This 2015 edition marks the third release of an MRIS yearbook. The first was released in 2012 under Saqib Al-Mousa’s presidency. The second in 2013 under Ibrahim Hashme’s leadership. The absence of a 2014 release, although unfortunate, makes this year’s yearbook all the more important. What you see now is the most comprehensive publication yet, but certainly not perfect. We apologize for any pictures or names that are incorrect or left out. Please excuse us. We would also like to thank everyone for whatever contribution, no matter how small, that was made. And, finally, we pray for the success of future Student Councils to produce even better yearbooks. The Yearbook Committee May 2015

INTRODUCTION Every year at Manarat, our experiences differ greatly from the year before. We grow, change and improve our school for the better in areas like sports, clubs and most importantly, academics. Even on the personal level, our goals change to what we think suits our latest situation. So, as the years pass and our experiences change, our yearbook should do the same as well. This book is a special reminiscence of our great memories at school. It not only demonstrates our experiences, but also sums up our feelings during one of the most memorable times of our lives. -Abdulla AbouShaira

Highlights of 2014-2015

I

t’s the first full year after the return of MR. ABDUL-AZIZ AL-SABI as not only the principal of the boy's section of MRIS but also the general supervisor of the boys and girls section, and we hope that he stays this time for many, many more years to come. Welcome back. We were also happy this year to welcome MR. SAYYID SAAD as the new vice principal in the upper primary section to replace Mr. Sabir who left last year. We hope the administration has the wisdom to keep him. Conversely, we were saddened at the beginning of this year to receive the news that MR. RIZK, who was the principal when even the oldest of our teachers first came to Manarat, passed away in September at the age of 80 back in his hometown of Alexandria, Egypt. May Allah have mercy on him. Mr. Rizk worked at Manarat from 1981 to his retirement in 2013 as Principal and at times acting General Director. Sports are making a comeback this year and we expect big things under the new leadership of the MR. MAJED who has helped to herald a new and hopefully golden era of cooperation between the vice principals and the P.E. staff. Working together we hope to continue to develop official sports teams that are supported financially by the administration, sponsoring and participating in sports competitions and tournaments throughout the year. The Student Council this year was one of the best ever, notably their president MUHAMMAD ALTALIB from South Africa, who rose to the helm of leadership in only his second year at the school. In addition to the usual Student Council activities which are too well known to be repeated here, they had a number of brilliant new ideas, chief among which was their survey to choose the Falcon as a symbol to revive the school sports teams and the flagging school spirit. Lastly, we thank Allah, the Most High, for granting us a very successful year and pray that our success continues into future years. AHMAD YASIN SECONDARY SCHOOL VICE PRINCIPAL

Letter from the Student Council President “Every end is a new beginning”

This year we were determined to make 2015 one of the best years Manarat has experienced in all aspects. What you see before you is the end product of a year filled with achievement. As you journey through these pages, bear in mind that this yearbook is not just a compilation of our fond memories, but also a show of the limitless potential found in Manarat students. When we set up the student council at the beginning of the year, our first priority was to help ‘strategize a plan to strengthen, transform and build up on last year’s student council as well as develop new ideas to better this school’ Fancy words, but boy, who would imagine that we would see all the achievements we are looking back at now. From a student-developed website to there being two newsletters being produced this year (the Sage being independent of course) to bringing out our new mascot during inter-school tournaments. This year has really been a roller-coaster, not knowing what’s going on during the ride, but getting off with a huge smile. I know it was not an easy task, but Alhamdulilah we’ve managed to get through it with more than what we came in with and that is what matters most. I would like to sincerely apologise to anyone I may have offended and may we continue on good terms for a long time to come. As a student, and as being one of you, I believe in this school and I believe in ‘us’, because I believe in myself. I believe together we can do something great. So thank you for everything. Thank you for reading this letter. Thank you for being part of Manarat, and thank you, for believing in our endless dreams, no matter how impossible they may seem. Muhammad Altalib Student Council President 2014-2015

Manarat Carnival 2015 This year the Manarat Student Council hosted the first ever school carnival. On April 16, 2015, students across grades 7-12 took part in various activities all throughout the day. The Student Council cabinet along with class representatives were guided by Mr.Abdul Basit to make the carnival one of the most memorable events of the year. Activities included archery tag, laser tag, a large variety of video games, a 4D theater, a marathon, football tournaments, basketball games, food sales, and multiple others. The student council recognized the rising number of young entrepreneurs and created a student run market where they could sell their goods to the carnival participants in order to earn their very own profit. We hope this event becomes an annual tradition, an activity that students will look forward to throughout the year. -Humza Ahmad

W

ho are we? The Islamic Council was introduced in our school to implement Islamic character and behavior in our fellow colleagues and to strengthen the Islamic environment of our school. It was founded by Abdullah bin Umair and myself, Ali Abushaban, and started off as a simple idea; we thought it would be more organized to put forward a Muadhin’s list to be enforced in Salah breaks rather than a random selection. It later on, and throughout a short span of time, grew to include extra-curricular activities that fulfil our aim in implementing Islamic character. These activities include our weekly “Who Am I?” Quiz competition, which aims to increase our knowledge in Islamic history, mainly

people who served our religion for a lifetime. As a council, we hope our idea grows even bigger to involve other classes around the school, and we are happy to hear your suggestions and ideas. We are looking forward to seeing your name with the other participants in our competition! (Note: We want to start making a new magazine in the school, so if you want to write in our magazine, feel free to contact Abdullah bin Umair or myself) Write to us at: help.islamicouncil@gmail.com or visit our website islamicouncil.wordpress.com

The Debate Society All the best public speakers around the world share a valuable characteristic, they all have past debate experiences which make them very strong and confident speakers. I noticed that many of my school colleagues were trying to express their respected topics to various audiences during weekly assemblies. They tried hard but they never had a first-hand experience before, making them weak speakers. After observing this for a short while, I refounded the debating club to enhance speech and debating skills among our brotherly student body, while at the same time boosting their self-confidence. Science Fair This year, students of the intermediate section participated in 2 very successful science fairs. The were held during parent-teacher conferences in each term. The brightest scientific minds in grades 7-9 amazed teachers, students, and parents alike with their professional and intriguing projects. From live electrolysis, to friction, to the famous baking soda volcano, our students covered a huge variety of topics. The science fair proves to be one of the most anticipated activities in the intermediate section, an activity we hope to host many times in the future. -Humza Ahmad

SPOR

Introduction... W

hat is it about sports that can cause such emotional turmoil or bring about such ecstasy in a person or group of people going up to the national or international level? One can find very highly enthusiastic followers of sports all around the world. Even the word that describes people who follow various sports and teams has its origin in an emotional term. The word fan comes from the word fanatic so we should not wonder about the emotional displays related to sports. There was an American television program “Wide World of Sports” which captured the essence of these emotions in its byline “The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat”. The fascination in the various sports has grown so that there are 24 hour programs dedicated solely to sports. The internet can lead you to do all kinds of arcane research as well as allow you to view sporting events on the other side of the world from the comfort of your home as well as allowing a person to keep up to the minute and moment with his or her cell phone. This interest is so great that throughout the world there are at least 13 actively used stadiums that have a capacity of at least 100,000 people while in the economic spectrum there are 13 athletes who made at least $40 million dollars in 2014. The competitive spirit runs strong through the sons (and even daughters) of Adam. Bringing the point closer to home or should I say school, I witness many of my 7th grade students rush to be first in line at the next class and they are ready to fight for their places in line. You can readily view this spirit when students play in the games and tournaments held in school. When they take part in these events with their team shirts and their favorite players’ names on the back, it is as if they are in the World Cup, and to them they are. This game or tournament can be a cherished life memory. This competitive spirit has been put into us by Allah. It is very important to the person that he or she excels at something. We all want to be winners. I don’t know of anyone who wants to be a loser, good for nothing. This is not a mere psychological point of view. Does not Allah mention in Suratun Nabaa “Indeed to those having Taqwa is the success”, referring to those whose end abode is the Jannah. Does He the Exalted not say “Wal Asr, Indeed mankind are LOSERS except… And He the Exalted also has said “Indeed the Believers have achieved success.” So take this competitive spirit and not merely use it to gain admission to a prestigious university which may allow you to be successful in this dunya. Let us do the things that allow us to achieve success in this world and the next and be with the true WINNERS. GO TEAM MUSLIMS GO!!! -Sabur Abdul Basit

hat a way to have started the year and what a way to end it! We had many activities this year, whether it was football, basketball, table tennis or swimming, we had it all. My main mission of the year as Student Relations coordinator was for everyone to participate in something they enjoy and for the Manarat students to regain the unity and the bond that hasn't been as strong in recent years as it once was. This was the year that the falcon was introduced to revive the spirit of our school and I hope it stays there as a symbol to all Manarat students in the upcoming years This was the first year that Junior Varsity (grades 7-9) teams were introduced and I sincerely hope that the P.E department and future Student Councils will maintain and develop these teams not only for their sake and the sake of the Intermediate school students who play on these teams but also for preparing students for the varsity teams. My sincerest apologies if I did not live up to everyone's expectations but Allah knows that I tried my best, and I honestly hope that this year has left our students with many happy memories. The Manarat Falcons.

The Manarat Falcons. An Icon. A Mascot. A Team. An identity that future generations of Manarat students will be proud of . Only time can tell , but choosing the Falcon as the school symbol is likely to be one of the most important and enduring achievements of the 2014-2015 Manarat Student Council. More than anything else Manarat needs to have school spirit. Just as the Falcon’s wings lift it up high above the world the Falcon is a symbol that can lift the spirit of the school. The Falcon represents many ideals that are characterized by the best that Manarat has to offer. It represents high academic achievement as a falcon flies high above all others. It

represents athleticism through the Falcon's speed, agility, and strength. Lastly, the Falcon represents our local region. It has been used for hundreds of years in the deserts of Arabia for hunting and recreation and has become an icon of Arab culture and tradition. All these important aspects of the Falcon make it the perfect symbol for our school for years to come. The Manarat Falcons went public for the first time early this year during exhibition games against Al-Rowad International School. We set the bar high with victories in both Football and Basketball. A great start to a lasting legacy. As we take on the challenge of future visiting teams everyone will come to know that Manarat is “The Home of the Falcons”. -Humza Ahmad

Basketball isn’t a common sport in the Kingdom, yet Manarat students show great interest in the game. Their dedication and enthusiasm has boosted our school’s basketball program to its highest point in years. The Varsity team consisted of players from grade 10 through 12. They went through some troubles in the beginning of the season, but managed to get back on track.

COMMUNITY

E C I V R SE

Perhaps the most important new development this year related to the secondary school has been the emphasis on Community Service. Many students have helped not only in supervision during the breaks and salaah but also have helped the students and teachers in the upper and lower primary schools. In trips and activities throughout the year, students from the secondary school volunteered to assist primary school teachers in supervising their classes. Not only did the students relieve primary teachers from some of the stress of managing their students and ensure greater safety for them but they also gained valuable experience important to their personal growth and as well as to their applications to colleges and universities. I can't express enough my thanks to all the students who answered the requests for support from the primary school vice principals, Mr. Sayyid Sa'd and Mr. Mikail Ariff.

Ahmad Yasin Secondary School Vice Principal

Library MODERNISATION PROJECT T

he Manarat library has been widely used by students throughout grade 9-12, however it has never been used for its books, but has been frequented as a study hall. The Student council sought to ensure that our fellow students had access to a varied and up to date collection of books. After all, isn’t that what a library should have in the first place. After hours of research and analysis into the current state of the library, a report was created showing the school administration the dire state of the book collection, with a nearly non-existent novel selection, an average book age of 40 years old, to nonuseable computers, it was safe to say that the library needed serious modernization. Months of effort led to a successful proposal made to the Ma’arif administration to update the library with a collection of over 2000 brand new books (a list compiled by our library project team) in the upcoming school year. -Abdullah Ariff

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS

The 2014-2015 school year has been one of the most academically impressive years that Manarat has ever seen. From IGCSE and A-levels to SAT and Advanced Placement, our High Achieving student body has made a reputation across a wide spectrum of subjects. We earned 15 nationwide positions, 25 district position, with one student attaining a world rank. The number of A*’s in IGCSE was unrivaled this year, setting the bar very high for the grades to come. The SAT scores this year reached an impressive level with many students earning special recognition for their effort. A ceremony was held to award these students in addition to presenting all the awards earned by students in IGCSE, AS, and A2. The ceremony featured many special guests ranging from the Maarif administration, representatives of the British Council, to the parents of the students receiving recognition, the most important guests of the night. Later in the year awards were presented for those actively involved in the Student Council, those who achieved a position on an Honors list, as well as those who demonstrated impressive character and attendance. The bar of academic excellence has been set high for the future generations of Manarat Students. -Humza Ahmad

Manarat Press T

he Manarat Press was an important source of news and entertainment for the academic year 2014-2015. It started as an idea and then developed into something bigger. When the idea was first introduced to Manarat, students didn't give it much attention but then the Student Council’s official newsletter was up and running again this year better than ever. After only a couple of weeks we were able to prove that The Manarat Press would be an important part of MRIS for years to come. The newsletter had news and articles that were submitted by students of Manarat. It also had an entertainment section that contained several articles about sports and gaming. It also contained a weekly question that the Manarat students had the chance to answer freely. Finally, l hope the editor in chief of the Manarat Press for the year 2015-2016 does an even better job than we did this year. -Ahmed Farouk Editor-in-Chief

The Sage T

he Sage is an independently run publication, produced by students for students. Unlike other insignificant publications in Manarat, The Sage aims to entertain its readers with a mix of humor and fact. Articles include short stories, gadget reviews, game reviews, Ebola, and occasionally something sport-related. Admittedly, many of the articles are slightly biased, and as a result tend to piss a lot of people off. However, The Sage never promised to be impartial—a fact explicitly stated in the disclaimer written in fine print.

According to sufficiently legitimate sources, The Sage is by far the most successful magazine publication distributed in Manarat. To date, it has produced the greatest number of issues during a year, and it’s also the first to name itself something other than "Manarat Press". The word Sage is an adjective defined as having, showing, or indicating profound wisdom, i.e. "The teacher's sage remarks completely failed to interest his pupils". Many believe the name to be somewhat extraneous, and in reality, the name was chosen simply because the founders couldn't think of anything else. The Sage was founded by two bored 11th graders, Basil Muhanna and Abdullah Ariff. Many other people were involved in writing and production, but there's no space for them here (you can find a detailed list in issue #5, the Sports Special edition). Mr. Monuzar Hamza supervises the publication and proofreads each issue before distribution. It is thanks to him nothing too inappropriate is published, and his skills as an English teacher are imperative to The Sage’s success. In the coming years, we hope that The Sage continues to thrive un-berated and much loved, unlike other less significant, less fortunate publications. -The Sage Team

QURANIC COMPETITION

‫القرآ‬

In April Manarat Al Riyadh School hosted a “Quranic Competition for International Schools in Riyadh” under the supervision of Dr. Ahmad Abdul-Munim, head of the Arabic Department, and Shaikh Muhammad Radi, holder of ijaazaat in the eleven different recitations of Quran. Eight different schools including our own participated in the competition. Primary and secondary students competed in the memorization and recitation of AlQuran Al-Kareem on eight different levels. Dr. Ahmad reported that Manarat students achieved numerous high honors in the competition.

RIVIZION.COM Hi! My name is Ahmed Gad, class of 2016 (didnt graduate yet!) but I was asked to write something short about RIVIZION, a website I created for Manarat in 2014. It was clear, the school needed a website to support it. There is so much happening around here and material that could be uploaded online. Something to help enable students to access their papers and worksheets on the go. A lot of my friends would ask me to send them files and pictures on their WhatsApp or email address, and I got tired! So I thought that having a central website, where all their papers and sheets are available on their phones and laptops would be a great idea. All I really wanted to do was to help students.

It was a great idea, not just for the success, but for the fun I had running and operating it. And although I’m not from the graduating class, I like to think that RIVIZION is. Since it was introduced with this year’s class. I hope it can stay operational even after I graduate or at least demonstrate what we would like to see in a school website. You only get one life, and if you do it right, I think one is enough. Don't be shy, or settle down, take the chance when it comes to you. Future Manarat generations, if you are reading this and RIVIZION is down. Know that the dark side won. Or I was too lazy to keep it on. Ahmed Gad

F

FAREWELL

arewell. Farewell to all the good times we had. Farewell to all the friends we made. Farewell to all the teachers who helped us through. Farewell to those who are no longer with us in form, but are still with us in spirit. Farewell! I have given most of the years of my life to this school, and I kid you not when I say… they have not gone in vain. To me, Manarat is more than a school, it’s more than a second house; it’s my second home. Every person in this school, whether I knew them personally or not, is part of my family… and there is nothing more important to me than my family. No matter where I go or who I become, I will never forget that Manarat helped make me who I am. I will never forget the teachers that put their time and efforts into making us the young men we are today. There are teachers who put so much effort into their classes, inspiring and empowering their students to learn and to succeed. These are the teachers who are the hardest to say goodbye to. But most of all, I will never forget my classmates whom I’ve known for so long, some of us like Mazin, Majd, and I go back together all the way to kindergarten! My many years in this school were spent building close and memorable connections with friends; friends that I hope never to lose even past graduation. Even if I never see them again (and I hope I will see them again) they will always be with me in memory. And with this, best of luck my fellow MRIS students, and congratulations, Class of 2015! -Osama Yasin
