MANAMA TOASTMASTERS – SEPTEMBER 2014

From the desk of The President

Khalid Amin President

A couple of weeks ago, we introduced the theme of our term Toastmasters… your key to success!

But our success as leaders is based on one assumption. It’s the assumption that we matter. Before we can lead others we have to lead ourselves and believe that we can have a positive impact on others. We have to believe that our words can inspire and our actions can move others. We have to believe that what we do counts for something. If we don’t, we won’t even try. Leadership begins with you! Success begins with you! Becoming a successful leader is a process of self-exploration. In order for me to become a leader and become an even better leader, it’s important that I first define my values and principles. If I don’t know what my own values are and determine expectations for myself, how can I set expectations for others? How will I convey confidence, strong will, and empathy? Without looking within myself, it’s not possible for me to look at others and recognize their potential and help others become successful leaders. Through self-exploration, like leaders everywhere, we must realize that becoming a leader begins when we come to understand who we are, what we care about, and why we do what we do.

4

YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS

Developing ourselves as leaders begins with knowing our own key convictions; it begins with our value system. Clarifying our own values and aspirations is a highly personal matter, and no one else can do it for us. It is a journey we have to take alone! No one else can do that for us! To exhibit harmonious leadership — leadership in which our words and deeds count — we must be in tune internally. All leaders must take this inner journey, a journey of exploring oneself. We must know the level of commitment that we are prepared to make, and why we are prepared to make that level of commitment.

In this vein, values drive the commitment necessary to create leaders in the first place, so are you in touch with your values? Are you truly committed? Have you been on your journey of self-exploring and if not are you ready to do it now? Are you ready to make success a reality for yourself and for those you care about?

Editorial ―Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.‖ ― H. Jackson Brown Jr., P.S. I Love You

Tired of doing the same old thing? Want to spice things up? There's more to being adventurous than climbing mountains and travelling to far off exotic lands. The formula for adventure is really quite simple: Novelty + courage = adventure. We all like novelty in one way or another. In fact, our brains are made to be attracted to novelty. And it turns out that it could actually improve our memory and learning capacity. How quickly novelty can disappear as we become familiar with the things around us, and yet how completely stimulated we become when we find yet another brand new experience to have or sight to see. You ought to explore everything. It’s your nature to explore things. Look around and I am sure that you will be amazed by the opportunities that come your way. All you need is to keep your eyes open and question everything. You should also take notes or pictures, and preferably both. If you decide to give it a try, you will beat boredom for good; find inspiration everywhere; learn to see things in a different way; Conquer your fears, talk to strangers, try new things, make a bucket list, get lost and explore new territory. Live in the moment. So, don’t be afraid of exploring new things and don’t use the lack of method as an excuse for not becoming a true explorer.

Leadership Development Membership Building Contests Recognize membership-builders
for their performance.

"The deepest joy of belonging comes as one learns to cooperate, contribute and help . . ."
-Dr. Ralph C. Smedley Founder, Toastmasters International

Congratulations to the clubs that participated in and were awarded for their efforts in membership-building contests during the program year. Was your club one of them?

During the year, 1241 clubs were awarded for their achievements during the Smedley Award contest, 764 clubs were awarded for their accomplishments during the Talk Up Toastmasters! membership building contest and 1,266 clubs met the Beat the Clock! challenge.

Most members of Toastmasters joined a club because someone invited them to a meeting. In the next few pages you will find helpful information regarding Toastmasters membership building contests. Reports reveal the individuals and clubs who have taken the initiative to give others the same opportunity to learn and grow that someone else once offered to them.

Districts can use these reports to recognize clubs and individuals for their contributions to membership growth. The reports are in district order so, depending on your district number, you may need to scroll through the report to find your district’s information.

Club Contests

 Smedley Award
Program Dates: September 1 – September 30
It all began in 1924. Ralph Smedley invited a few men to meet in the Santa Ana, California YMCA where he conducted the first meeting of what would eventually evolve into Toastmasters International. One person initiated a program that would go on to affect millions of people. In his honor, can your club add five new, dual, or reinstated members between September 1 and September 30? By doing so you’ll qualify to receive a "Smedley Award" ribbon to display on your club’s banner. Membership applications and payment for members who join between September 1 and September 30 must be received at World Headquarters or online no later than September 30. Each member's join date as listed on the application must be in September or September. Transfer and charter members do not count for credit. In addition to the ribbon, qualifying clubs will also earn a special discount code for 10% off their next club order. Discount code expires six months from date of issue and is not valid with any other offer.

Open House Showcase
Program Dates: January and July
Retaining members is essential to the health of a club, and gaining new members is equally vital to its success. For potential members visiting a club, first impressions are paramount. Toastmasters' new Open House Showcase is a great way for clubs to make that first impression a positive one and to attract new members.

8

YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS

Educational Program

Clubs that are successful can earn discounts on useful products. How? Follow these simple steps: Hold a successful open house in January and/or July. After the open house takes place, email your complete marketing package to marketing@toastmasters.org with your club name and club number in the subject line and include the following (bulleted items must be included to qualify):
 • • • • •

A completed, signed guest list Pictures of the event The open house agenda Sample marketing materials used to host the open house (e.g., fliers, brochures, guest packets, other promotional items) Your advertising plan.(The plan should include how and where you advertised, as well as samples of the actual advertisements. Some examples of this would include fliers in local stores, libraries or doctors' offices, ads in a local newspaper, magazine, on your club website or social networking sites, and word of mouth.)

You may also send video footage if you'd like.

As many as 50 of the clubs that gain the most new members as a result of their open house events will receive a 30% discount on their next club order. If any ties occur, the quality of the clubs' marketing packages will determine the winner.

All new members of a club must have been on the applicable open house guest list. The member's join date must be in January or February (for the January open house) and in July or September (for the July open house). Complete marketing packages must be received by February 7 (for the January open house) and September 7 (for the July open house). Membership applications and payment for members must be received at World Headquarters or online no later than February 29 (for the January showcase) and September 31 (for the July showcase). Clubs do not get credit for transfer or charter members. The 30% discount expires six months after the date of issue and is not valid with any other offer. MANAMA TOASTMASTERS - SEPTEMBER 2014

Speech

TM Tosin Arowojolu As a little girl growing up in Nigeria, I learned many poems but one that always struck me was the one that talked about the type of person we are based on what day of the week we were born. I was born on a Thursday and the poem says “Thursday’s child has far to go.” For me, that meant I was born to travel! I still remember the very first plane ride I went on. I was about 10 years and had gone on many road trips in Nigeria but had never flown and was so excited when my father announced as a gift for passing the entrance examination from primary school to secondary school, I was going to the UK for the summer. That was my first introduction to a different culture than what I was used to. It was a little scary for me though because I flew by myself but it was also one of many lessons learnt of being independent. I stayed with family friends then visited some cousins and even traveled by train to see an aunt and really had a great time. Traveling was rather expensive for my parents so my next trip came about four years later to New York for the first time to visit my aunt, uncle and cousins. Little did I know that I would ultimately move to the States in 1990. As I was completing my first degree in Civil Engineering in the University of Lagos in Nigeria, I knew I wanted to pursue a post graduate degree and my first choice was to attend college in the States which I did.

22

Speech

I completed my Master’s in Civil Engineering in New York and then got a job with the City of Los Angeles, two years later in 1992. Moving from the East Coast to the West Coast of the United States for a young, single female was quite daunting but I welcomed it as an adventure and an opportunity to explore a country that has now become my home. As a vast country with varying cultures and landscapes from coast to coast, I took advantage of the proximity of nearby vacation locations including campsites and road trips which was an inexpensive way to take a break from the rigors of my job as an engineer. Another trip I fondly remember was one I took with some other single friends at the time. An airline had advertised cheap flights to various states to celebrate their anniversary; we had a long holiday weekend so decided to take up the offer to go somewhere new. We selected the cheapest option and ended up going to Utah. It is a trip I would never forget because it was almost completely spontaneous and we had no specific plans for what we wanted to do. We arrived in Utah, walked around for a bit and contemplated what we would do for the next three days we were there. Since I am Thursday’s child I came up with the “great” idea to drive ten hours from Utah to Wyoming just so I could see Old faithful, a geyser I had learnt about in high school geography back in Nigeria. I felt that we were close enough to seeing it and it would be a dream come true. To my pleasant surprise my friends agreed so off we went on our journey to see Old Faithful. To date I have traveled to 24 of the 50 states in the US.

MANAMA TOASTMASTERS - SEPTEMBER 2014

23

Speech

Now that I married with 2 boys aged 5 and 9, my traveling is not so spontaneous but rather we carefully plan where we go, when we go and what will do when we get there otherwise the boys will complain of being bored. I’m sure those of you with young children can relate. We moved to Bahrain in 2009 to join my husband Andrew who has worked in the Middle East for the past 13 years. Living here has opened up the opportunity to visit countries that would be very far and more expensive to visit from the States. Since living here we have visited all the countries in the GCC except Saudi Arabia, which we hope to at least drive through before we move back to the States. Last year we went to Malta for the first time and this year will visit Malaysia also for the first time. I love the quote by the Dalai Lama which says once a year; go someplace you’ve never been before. I am looking forward to visiting even more countries to fulfill my destiny as Thursday’s child.
