May I take this opportunity to introduce man Magazine. A bi-monthly publication that has been created to accommodate the wellbeing of men. A publication that dishes out all the info that you need to know arraying from the fastest cars, construction, finance, export and import, sports, technology, fashion, the latest gadgets as well as relationships and reviews on an extensive range of subjects. I think it’s also a good stepping stone for the ladies out there who would like to use this as a laboratory to study men and get to also know what they think of the opposite sex. Just like the man slogan states, “Legends in Motion”, the cover of our very own first issue has been graced by a legendary Motivational and Inspirational speaker, Mr. Azim Jamal. A very smart and principled Jamal talks about his passion for his work, family and life in general and goes on to also enlighten us on the journey of his branding of “The Corporate Sufi”. Having given you the highlights of the main man in this issue, I am not going to go on about what you should expect to read in this issue. Not for starters but I’d recommend that you take your time to get familiar with man magazine and tell me what you think. There’s a wide range of astonishments yet to be revealed. You know how men can be full of surprises now don’t you. Enjoy!

GADGETS REVIEW

T

his luxurious piece of jewelry, valued at approx. US$20,000, is cast in 750 gold and adorned with numerous diamonds and a valuable chain. The idea to develop the world’s most expensive MP3 player came to Shnaider while negotiating a sponsorship deal with TrekStor CEO, Daniel Szmigiel. Shnaider was so fascinated by the i.Beat organix – a handy, 40g player with full-bodied sound and winner of eleven accolades that he placed a special order for the unique, custom-made device on the spot.

pair of clutches split the power transmission between odd- and even-numbered gears. If you’re, say, accelerating in second gear, third gear is already engaged but the ‘odd’ clutch is disengaged. When you want to up shift, you touch a paddle on the left ‘bar, and in an instant the ‘even’ clutch disengages and the ‘odd’ one engages. There’s no detectable interruption in power to the rear wheel. Such systems have been around for quite a while in racing cars and are about to become fairly common in some run-of-the-mill production cars, like the Ford Focus. However until now, no one but Honda has managed to make one small enough for motorcycle use. If anything this new 1237cc V-Four has ditched that unnecessarily complex valvetrain and adopted a conspicuously simple one: the “Unicam” design as seen on Honda single-cylinder dirt bikes. Unicam motors have, as the name implies, a single overhead cam. The intake valves are actuated directly by the lobes, while the exhaust valves are operated via rockers.

The leather exterior, which matches the deck under the hood, is available in a choice of several colors. A chrome handle is built in to the chassis and is modeled after Bentley etching known as Knurling .the frames around the laptop are made of white gold. The Bentley sports a 64-bit version of Microsoft Vista Ultimate, a 160GB hard drive and is powered by 2GB of RAM and a Mobile AMD TurionTM 64 processor. Its 12-inch screen has a 1280×800 resolution and the system has a fine selection of ports, including 3 USBs, S-video out, a VGA port, microphone and headphones. There is a front loading DVD-RW player and a webcam centered over the display. And for the price you get Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2007 and Dragon Naturally Speaking voice software, because you wouldn’t want to mar this fine laptop with your fingerprints. Would you?

Who is Azim Jamal? Someone who failed his exams in school and struggled as a child. Science was not his cup of tea. He did much better in Accountancy and Sports. However it is only when he opened his birth-day (what he was born with) gift and switched from “Accounting for business to Accounting for life” that he really began to shine his light. Give us a brief account of your upbringing? My grandfather moved to Africa from India when he was 14. It took him 4 decades to become successful in Africa. I was born in Kisutu where we had no floor in the house, moved to Upanga, then Kariakoo. We were about 45 people living in one big house - my dad, his several brothers and sisters and all their children. The house was always full with lots of children. Our house was never short of abundance! Later, I studied in Mombasa and UK before migrating to Canada and marrying a wife from India. Today, I live with my parents who are totally Eastern and my children who are totally Western. And I am half East (born there) and part West (worked there). So I have the best of west and east in my house. Did you ever envisage that one day “the world will know Azim Jamal or that you would be a sought-after inspirational speaker”? Yes, there was something inside of me always waiting to unfold and explode!

stronger. However, it was only when I was 43 when I hurled myself totally into this career after a soul stirring experience working as a volunteer.

steady and recurring business here. I have also begun speaking at Dar-es-salaam University where the message has been well received.

What inspired you then and when did it happen?

What else are you involved in and that you really enjoy doing?

I was so shaken by poverty and conditions of the Afghan refugees that I wanted to help people like them. I realized that even though I had 3 professional accounting degrees I was not passionate as an accountant.

I am always doing some voluntary work. I work with various AKDN organizations including the ones in Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Do you usually work alone?

What is Jamal’s typical day like – can you take us through it?

Yes and No.When I wake up at 1.30 am and work, I am alone. During the day it is full of people especially when I am speaking, consulting or coaching. If I am doing research and reading, I do it alone.

I wake up at 1.30 am, read, write, think till 4 am. Meditate from 4 to 5 am, then exercise, followed by day’s activities including speaking, coaching, consulting and family time depending where in the world I am. Is inspirational speaking a talent, a Godgiven gift or is it something that could be learned and enhanced over time? It is a God-given gift which can be enhanced by focus and practice. How would you characterize your style of speaking? I like to begin by understanding the client need and pain followed by the ideal objectives of the client. My speaking is thus tailored in response to client need and objectives. I try to avoid the monologue style of speaking. I prefer the interactive where the participants are engaged.

Is it really what you wanted to be?

Do you think it can work here in Tanzania – knowing the typical Tanzanian mind set?

As a child, I had no idea or direction. At 18 it began to gradually change. At 21 onwards my desire got a little

Absolutely! I have been coming to Tanzania every 3 to 4 months for the past 3 years and have built a good

What do you do in your free time? Any games, a sport for relaxation? I love spending quality time with my wife Farzana and my children Sahar and Tawfiq. My parents live with us and are great role models for my children and I cherish my time with them. I love playing football with my son Tawfiq and obviously coaching him. Being with my daughter keeps me on my toes because she is so quick and insightful. Also I enjoy following the English Premier League and Champions league, and watching my favorite team Manchester United play. Anytime for family? Absolutely! I am 7 to 8 months out of the year home with the family. Since my work is flexible, I get a lot of quality time with them. This is a big blessing for me. How do you define success? Being authentic and achieving the goals you set for yourself (not the ones others set for you). MAN OCT- Nov, 2009

What advice would you give someone treading your footsteps?

Is there a limit for you career-wise?

Past winners include: His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Deepak Chopra and Eckhart Tolle. An experienced team of book reviewers, librarians, authors, editors, bookstore owners, and leaders in the publishing industry carefully select the finalists and winners in a three-tiered judging process.

“The sky is the limit”! The key is to do things for the right reasons and enjoy the ride. The destiny is in the journey! Where do you go from here?

Also my books including The Corporate Sufi, 7 Steps to Lasting Happiness and The Power of Giving are published in many countries and translated in nine languages.

To continue to shine my light and inspire others to shine their light. To be a loving father, husband, son and human being. To live one day at a time and to get better and better everyday in every way and making a difference to one and all.

The Power of Giving has hit # 1 twice on Amazon once topping Harry Potter and Da Vinci Code and on 17th October 2009 hit # 1 on Barnes & Noble.

Be focused. Know what you want and more importantly why you want, what you want.

Describe some of your most important career accomplishments. On May 28th, 2009 in New York at the world’s largest book convention, Book Expo, my co-authored book “The Power of Giving” won the prestigious Nautilus Gold award for the category social change / activism / peaceful solutions. The Nautilus Book Awards recognize and reward world-changing books. This is the 9th annual award.

How did you discover your passion for writting? Actually, speaking came much more easier and natural for me. I got better at writing over time. However, I still need an editor to go through my work! I am strong on content and natural flow but not as strong on grammar. If you had not chosen to share your gift of inspiration speaking, what else would you have done? I had three professional accounting degrees - Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (FCCA), Chartered Financial Planner (CFP) and Certified General Accountant (CGA) and was a senior partner in an accounting firm. I was good at sports, selected for Tanzania National cricket team and East African combined schools when I was 18. Also won many trophies in football, table tennis and cricket including voted “Sports man of the year” twice. I could, therefore, have been a good sports coach. Also, I would be passionate doing NGO work. However, I feel my current work

8

is what I am best at - I was born to do this and reflects the “Corporate Sufi” approach - inspiring leaders at all levels to unleash potential and regain balance. As an entrepreneur, you are able to keep many balls in the air. How do you do this? What tips can you offer others? I believe in less is more! In other words having clear weekly and monthly goals which are aligned to your long term vision is what gets the best results. If you have too many priorities, you have no priorities! Instead of having a “To Do” list, start doing an “Undoing List”. The key is to do less and do it well and ensuring the less you pick to do is very important work. You’ve worked with many awardwinning individuals. What are the lessons you’ve learned from them? They work with a good team. They are focused, disciplined and determined. They have clear goals and execute around a tight set of priorities. Would you like to offer any advice to people wanting to go into your line of work? It is a very fulfilling work. However, you need patience, resolve & determination. It takes time to become successful. It took me a good nine years! For me, the struggle was worth it as I got better and better at my craft. What is your philosophy towards work?

“ Work is a sacred act, a prayer. Give yourself totally to work and perform with pride. Work defines who you are. Picasso once said work is the ultimate seduction.”
