If your pet is very old or has a lingering illness, consider talking to kids before the death occurs to make it a gentler transition for them when it happens. Avoid trying to cover the truth with a “white lie”. Telling kids that Spot went to live on a farm somewhere isn’t the best idea, instead use the opportunity to be open and honest with your kids, and to be there for them through their grieving process.
