A Message From Our Founder

As I reflect on another remarkable year, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude. Your unwavering support has been the driving force behind our success, and I am excited to share our progress and accomplishments of the year. Since the Foundation’s inception, our mission has remained steadfast—empowering and uplifting at-risk youth in the urban core of Jacksonville. Over the years, we have seen countless lives transformed, and it is all thanks to your belief in our vision. Through your generous contributions and dedication, we have been able to provide essential after school and summer programs that offer academic assistance, mentorship, mental health counseling, and the opportunity to learn tennis. These programs not only enrich the lives of our youth but also inspire them to become leaders and role models in their communities. As we move forward, we remain committed to being a beacon of hope for those who need it most. We look forward to expanding our reach, touching more lives, and creating lasting change in our community. Thank you for being an essential part of the Malivai Washington Youth Foundation family. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for our youth and our community. Sincerely,

MaliVai Washington

Who We Are

The MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation (MWYF) is a beacon of hope and catalyst for change in the historical neighborhood of Durkeeville, dedicated to nurturing the potential of primarily low-income youth in Jacksonville, Florida. MWYF was founded in 1996 by MaliVai Washington, former professional tennis player. Throughout our 27 years of programming, MWYF has made a positive impact on the futures of at-risk youth.

What We Do With a relentless commitment to academic excellence, athletic development, and life skills enrichment, MWYF provides a comprehensive range of programs designed to unlock the potential of every student. With MWYF, the journey towards success and personal growth is redefined, creating a lasting impact on the lives of the youth we serve.

MWYF Programs Tennis-n-Tutoring Tennis-n-Tutoring (TnT) is a comprehensive educational program designed to empower and support students in elementary school. Our goal is to provide a daily academic assistance platform that combines the benefits of tutoring, tennis, and enriching activities to foster holistic growth and development among young learners.

Leadership The Leadership Program is designed to empower and uplift middle school students. Our comprehensive program goes beyond academic success, emphasizing social-emotional learning and instilling positive life skills that are essential for personal growth and leadership development. Leadership nurtures our students’ abilities to adapt, collaborate, and think critically, preparing them to excel not only academically, but also as compassionate and responsible citizens of tomorrow.

Club 904 Club 904 is a dynamic and forward-thinking program specifically tailored to empower high school students, guiding them towards a successful future in college or their chosen careers. Our approach equips students with the necessary tools and resources to navigate the path to higher education and beyond. Our Leaders in Training (L.I.T.) program stands as a stepping stone towards community service and invaluable first work experiences.

Camp Dynamite & S.T.E.P Into Summer Participants enjoy a dynamic blend of academic enrichment and physical activities including tennis, life skills development, and arts and crafts. Our camps nurture teamwork, leadership, and creativity while providing a safe and supportive environment for young learners to grow. The Summer Teen Employment Program (S.T.E.P.) allows high school students to gain work experience and community service hours through various roles within the camp while focusing on college, career, and employment preparation.

Competitive Tennis Team Our Tennis Team offers an unparalleled opportunity for students seriously pursuing tennis. Open to those with a minimum 2.5 GPA and exceptional behavior in our program, the team receives small group lessons, participation in USTA events, and travel to college matches and professional tournaments. Additionally, each member receives a racquet for personal use, incentivizing them to excel both on and off the court.

Serving Hope

Mentoring

Bezzyle and his mentor, Ms. Allison, may not have been together very long, but the relationship they’ve formed is heartwarming. You can catch the two of them working on Bezzyle’s reading skills and talking about sports together, especially the Jags! Their relationship is a perfect example of the impact mentoring has on a child. Since they’ve started working together, not only have Bezzyle’s grades improved, but also his behavior. He’s no longer getting phone calls home and has become such a respectful little man thanks to his time with Ms. Allison. We can’t wait to watch their relationship continue to grow!

Holiday Angels

Holiday Angels is a program we hold very close to our hearts. Having the ability to assist our families with holiday expenses with the help of our community members and partners is always a joyous feeling. We provided over 380 kids with presents to open thanks to our dedicated angels. Holiday Angels is just one service among many we provide for our MWYF families.

Share the Love MWYF was able to award $100,500 in scholarships this year, the most to date! We award many scholarships every school year to our students in grades 5-12. Our goal is to assist as many of our youth as possible to the road of attending higher education debt free. Many of our alumni have graduated from college with zero debt, thanks to the support of our donors and partners. Our amazing community members raised $28,800 for our Share the Love initiative! Share the Love allows individuals to support our scholarship program, joining our major supporters which include THE PLAYERS Championship, The Jaguars Foundation, iMethods, Advantage YOU, Zoe Gaudet Fund, and the Murray Family (in memory of Sherry & Rick). We are deeply grateful for our community in showing us their support in our mission through Share the Love and applaud them in their part of allowing us to award $100,500 in scholarships in the 2022-23 school year!

Serving Hope Serv-a-thon

Financial Literacy

Every year our students learn the importance of serving in their community and giving back. Serv-a-thon is an annual community service program between MLK Jr. Day and President’s Day where our Champions make items like Valentine’s Day cards for our community members, bookmarks for the local library, and hygiene packs for the homeless. Middle and high school students hosted a grounds clean up for our campus and played bingo with seniors! Serv-a-thon is just a small way MWYF helps our students become star members of their communities.

We teach our students the skills needed to help prevent generational poverty through financial literacy. With the help of our partners at Chase and First Horizon, our students gain important knowledge on finance such as saving, investing, and budgeting. Our Champions are becoming experts on financial literacy!

Family Nights

Thanksgiving Our Annual Thanksgiving Drive sorting and delivery events exceeded way beyond our expectations. We delivered 892 bags of groceries to 72 MWYF families and had enough left over donations to deliver items to the City Rescue Mission and 6 additional houses in the local neighborhood! Relieving the financial burden that the holiday season can bring is especially important to MWYF in serving hope and changing lives for our youth.

Family nights at MWYF are not only a chance for our families to form stronger connections with each other, but also an educational experience. We feature a variety of objectives throughout the school year at our Family Nights. This year the topics ranged from financial literacy to home buying, literacy help for 3rd grade and up, helping with homework, and the importance of health and wellness. To end off the year, we had a family BBQ. We love having our families on campus for evenings filled with love and laughter!

Changing Lives Life After Graduating High School

Kendall graduated high school this school year with an astounding 3.95 GPA from Stanton College Preparatory School, known as one of the top 10 high schools in Florida. Since attending MWYF starting in elementary school, Kendall took advantage of the many opportunities presented to him, including scholarships and college advising with community volunteer, Cindy Chomiak. Kendall was accepted to the most selective institutions in the country and was awarded over 1.2 million dollars of scholarships collectively. Before heading to the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, he is taking a gap year funded by the Morehead-Cain Scholarship to travel and begin his research aspirations. MWYF is proud to have Kendall as an alumni!

Becoming A USTA Champion Saniya has been a MWYF champion since kindergarten. Growing up in our programs, she has adopted the love for tennis. After years of hard work and dedication, Saniya won her first USTA tennis tournament in the girls 12U! When Saniya is on the court, she is focused and gives 100 percent of her effort. It was no suprise that she won this tournament. Saniya said, “I’m really happy to be a USTA Level 7 Champion. Coming off the court after my final match and seeing my teammates is my favorite memory now.”

Why I Believe In MWYF “I think the program really fosters an atmosphere of truly helping kids. They know it’s not just tennis and homework help. My kids have peers they can speak with, people who care about them, scholarship programs, work programs, and so many opportunities to be exposed to things they normally wouldn’t have.” -Andrea Denson, mom of two MWYF champions

7

L.I.T. of the Year As a Leader In Training, Xavier goes above and beyond to support our staff, inspire his peers, and create a positive learning environment for our elementary students. Xavier is now a senior in high school and is an exceptional role model to his peers. “I’ve loved being an L.I.T. It doesn’t feel like a job, but at the same time I know that I am helping. My favorite part is getting to have fun with the kids after they have done their homework.” Xavier has a contagious, fun energy that uplifts everyone around him. Winning L.I.T. of the Year was well deserved as he brings such great support in the classroom!

Changing Lives Full Circle with Keanna

“I feel that MWYF has really shaped me into who I am today,” says Keanna Bell, “from attending the program at the beginning of the Foundation, to now as a professional working as the Office Manager, I see the same growth I had while in the program in the kids today.” After attending Florida Atlantic University, Keanna came back to work at the Foundation as an alumni. Her hard work and dedication may be from her own resilience, but MWYF is proud to be a force behind her success as a professional.

Student Athlete of the Year Not only has Caleb been an incredible tennis L.I.T., supporting our coaches and serving as a role model for his peers, but he also takes the time to build relationships with the younger kids in the Foundation. His perseverance, work ethic, and care for others make him a true champion. Caleb has had success as a tennis player, ranking in the top 100 for the 18U in our region. “I’m looking forward to see where tennis can take me in life, whether that means playing in college or using the leadership skills I learned here to progress on my own path.” Now as a senior in high school, Caleb is noticing how much the scholarships he has been awarded throughout his time here will assist him with higher education. Caleb has been awarded scholarships throughout his time at MWYF and still has a chance to win more as a senior!

Ashley’s Story

MWYF alumni, Ashley Strickland, took advantage of her advantage at MWYF when she attended at the inception of our programs. Ashley is now the Marketing Manager for Pediatrics of UF Health Communications after working for MWYF and other nonprofits. With a solid support system behind her, she chased after her career. Now an established professional, Ashley is a new member of the Board of Directors for MWYF. “It’s easy to support an organization whose mission you believe in. I believe in the mission because I can see where my work, volunteerism and financial support are making a difference for children with so much hope. As a board member, I hope to encourage and inspire the MWYF staff, students and volunteers to continue forging the future of the next generation of MWYF students.” Ashley’s success inspires our younger students to stay focused and chase after their dreams.

MWYF Tennis Team

Free from COVID challenges, it was time to reboot our competitive tennis team. Our coaches recruited a new and returning group of student-athletes with a focus on academics, competition, sportsmanship, and new experiences. The 11 players on the team focused on improving on and off the court while participating in all levels of competition from Team Tennis to USTA Level 6 & 7 tournaments. Our players gained confidence as they started to improve their skills and win more matches. The team experienced unique opportunities to enjoy college visits and professional tennis. In March, they visited the University of Florida where they watched the Gators men’s tennis team take home a win. Afterwards, they met with the team who explained the rigors of being a collegiate student athlete. Next up was a visit to the Billie Jean King Cup in Delray Beach. MWYF players enjoyed the matches where the US team (including Coco Gauff and Jessica Pergula) beat Austria! The US team graciously posed for pictures with MWYF players and Coco’s grandmother (who was the first black student integrated into her white school) encouraged our students to go for their dreams and to not be afraid of being different. At the end of the school year, our players participated in Kids Day at the NCAA’s at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. These experiences left our players in awe and working hard on and off the court to continue to earn these special activities in the upcoming years. Jahniyah, in the 6th grade, stated, “After meeting Coco, I think I’m her number one fan now, she’s my phone screen saver. I can’t believe she isn’t that much older than I am and she’s playing these huge matches.”

Partner Spotlight: Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation The Jacksonville Jaguars and Jaguars Foundation have been loyal supporters of MWYF for many years. Our relationship began in 1999, with the HONOR ROWS program, where students complete service projects and set and achieve self-improvement goals in order to be awarded an opportunity to attend a Jaguars home game at EverBank Stadium. Over the years, hundreds of MWYF students have earned their seat, often their first time attending a Jaguars game. Shop With a Jaguar is one of our students’ favorite events. They come to Daily’s Place or the stadium for dinner and an experience where they can interact with the Jaguars players and, of course, JAXSON de Ville and The ROAR cheerleaders. As the night continues, they move on to shop at Walmart and are matched with Jaguars players who help pick out holiday presents for themselves and their families! MWYF is one of many nonprofits that participate in Give and Go, where patrons can purchase Jags tickets on-line and a large portion of the proceeds returns to the nonprofit. Through this partnership, MWYF is able to raise thousands of dollars to support our programs and services. Additionally, the Jaguars Foundation has provided a college scholarship to a graduating senior at MWYF the past few years, showing their continued dedication to improving the futures of our youth. In total, the Jaguars Foundation has provided more than $550,000 in grant support to MWYF. Peter Racine, Senior Vice President of the Jaguars Foundation, stated, “The Jaguars Foundation invests in organizations that make a lasting positive impact on the youth who need it most in our city. The MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation is among the top organizations in Jacksonville to do this and we are proud to support them.”
