P er s on a l Fav o ur i t e s Our team of experienced reservations consultants are passionate about travel and enjoy visiting new destinations as well as old favourites all the time. Five members of the team share some of their recent travel experiences below. Prices are per person and include flights, transfers, accommodation with breakfast, Kirker Guide Notes and the services of the Kirker Concierge.

Ben Williams Palermo

Built and rebuilt by every invader since the Phoenicians, Palermo is a busy city boasting Norman and Arabesque architecture, the largest opera house in Italy and splendid Baroque churches. However, the real life of modern Palermo is found in its street markets, cafés and bars, where the city’s cosmopolitan history is reflected in the delicious local cuisine, which makes the most of simple but flavoursome ingredients – fresh fish, lemons, aubergines, anchovies and tomatoes. Arancini (deep fried risotto balls) suffused with saffron and cazzini (potato croquettes, also deep fried) are both found all over the capital, but my personal favourite are cannoli (creamy ricotta wrapped in fried pastry), a must to end every meal, and the perfect afternoon pick-me-up. A three night holiday, staying at the Centrale Palace (4* superior) starts from £539 per person

Pat Bellieni Lake Garda

Just a five minute drive from the busy resort of Gardone Riviera, the small harbour town of Salo is home to the longest promenade on Lake Garda and possibly in the whole of Italy. All along the leafy walkway are elegant cafés and restaurants, charming local shops, and unexpectedly attractive piazzas. We have selected the best hotel on the waterfront; the elegant 4* Hotel Bellerive, with rooms which are light and airy, most with views of the marina, exceptionally welcoming staff, and a restaurant with a terrace which opens onto the promenade itself. With a more refined and exclusive atmosphere than other parts of the lake, Salo is a town where I would happily spend a relaxing week at any time of year. A three night holiday, staying at the Hotel Bellerive (4* superior) starts from £598 per person

Murray Mitchell

Reuben Singer

Dubrovnik Arriving at sunset, the walled city of Dubrovnik (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site), is a sight I will never forget. However, during the summer months the compact historic centre can become crowded with day-trippers, so I would recommend staying just outside the centre at the Hotel Bellevue which offers fantastic sea views and a lift that takes you directly down to the beach. To get the most out of your visit, a private walking tour is a must – late in the afternoon is best when the city is calm and the cruise ships have sailed. You can explore the winding streets in the Mediterranean sunshine and perhaps walk the intact city walls. Dubrovnik is especially beautiful lit up at night, where the old town’s marbled streets are illuminated by the moonlight. A three night holiday, staying at the Hotel Bellevue (4* superior) starts from £787 per person

Verona The pace of life and relaxed café culture of Verona make it feel more like a quintessential Italian town than a city, but during the annual opera season it can become much busier. For those looking for a real breath of fresh air, the Relais Fra’ Lorenzo is an ideal escape – as you glide through the gates of this peaceful retreat, the spectacular view over the town is wonderful – as is an afternoon spent by the swimming pool, or relaxing on the sunny lawn. And with only a comfortable lounge and just seven rustic rooms it has a very intimate atmosphere, whilst the cafés and restaurants of Verona are still only minutes away. See page 15 for details of the summer opera festival. 3 nights for the price of 2 at the Relais Fra’ Lorenzo until 31 March price from £529, saving £136 4 nights for the price of 3 in April - price from £728, saving £142 3 night price from £728 from 1 May onwards

Esther Smit Capri The spectacular, panoramic views of the bright blue Bay of Naples glittering down below, make breakfast on the terrace at the hotel Caesar Augustus an unforgettable experience. Perched at the top of a dramatic cliff in Ana Capri, this Relais & Chateaux hotel is my favourite retreat on the island famous for glamour, beauty, and Roman Emperors. Not only is it a romantic escape with elegant bedrooms, dazzling infinity pool and a wonderful terrace restaurant, but it also offers a haven of tranquillity – whilst day-trippers from Naples and Sorrento throng Capri Town every afternoon, few venture up to Ana Capri and only those who choose to stay overnight can enjoy the exclusive ambience of the island without the crowds. For those with more time to spare, I would highly recommend a tailor-made holiday to include a stay on the mainland as well. Whilst Sorrento is the most convenient base for exploring the coast, Positano is home to the iconic colourful houses clinging to the cliff, and the pretty village of Ravello has the most breath-taking views. But don’t forget the city of Naples itself, a bustling, vibrant and exhilarating contrast to the islands, and home to the Archeological Museum which houses the finest treasures recovered from nearby Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum. Ask the Kirker Concierge about excursions with one of our expert private guides who can help bring these ancient cities to life. 4 nights for the price of 3 at the Hotel Caesar Augustus (5* deluxe) from 13 April - 13 May - price from £956, saving £158 3 night price from £1,089 from 14 May onwards

Time Out With Ted Kirker’s Director of Sales & Marketing shares his top tips for the perfect short break and domestic harmony... My how time flies… the last 30 years seem to have rushed by. I hope they have also seen you enjoying the occasional Kirker holiday. I have been lucky enough to indulge in two personal Kirker holidays recently: one with all the family to Madrid, and one to Sicily (without children) to celebrate a joint 50th birthday with another couple. In Madrid we stayed at The Ritz – isn’t it strange how even the most independent teenagers can cope with spending time with their parents as long as breakfast, lunch and dinner (with wine) are sponsored by a devoted Dad? I must thank Charlie Dyson (aka the Kirker Concierge) for his tapas bar recommendations – not to mention the excellent private guide, Carmen who kept everyone’s attention as we glided through the Prado from Velazquez and El Greco to Goya and Sorolla. We visited Sicily in September, staying at the Villa Sant’ Andrea on Taormina beach (see page 14). I had forgotten the pleasure of warm autumn sunshine combined with excellent al fresco dining. Thanks again to the Kirker Concierge’s guidance – lunch in Syracuse was sublime – and the perfect reward after our private walking tour. We also spent a fascinating morning up Mount Etna – followed by a delicious lunch and wine tasting at a local vineyard. After three blissful nights away, we were reminded how wonderfully rejuvenating a short break can be and all agreed to take advantage of birthdays and anniversaries more often. In spite of my best efforts, my list of ‘must see’ destinations still seems to grow:Vienna (for Klimt, Dürer and opera), Marrakech, where friends in Tangier need a visit – and I shouldn’t forget that Mrs W was reminiscing fondly about our honeymoon on the Orient Express 25 years ago… I wonder if that was a hint for a Silver Wedding celebration?

This is just a small selection from the wide range of special offers available. To request a brochure please speak to your independent travel agent. Agents details:
