A focus on savings without compromising services and facilities used by the community has helped the Council keep the rates rises well below the rate of inflation, while still delivering forthecommunity.

MayorSamBroughtonsaid,“That this plan covers the third year of our Long-Term Plan and delivers whatwesaidwewould.”

The Council is planning to spend just over $177 million, keeping the services we know communities need and want with a focus on water, transport and community facilities. At thesame time, the Council is committing to investing $184.5 million in infrastructure to deliver on the needs for Selwyn’s growth which is expected to continue. This investment includes $27.9 million in water supply projects, $55.8 million in wastewater projects and $56.2 million in transportation projects across ourdistrict.

“We’ve checked in with our community and confirmed that we’re on the right track with the projects that matter most to them during this time when all of us are feeling the pressure of risingcosts,”Samconcluded. There has been no change to the proposed rates as a result of the feedback, and the Council confirmed the average rate increase across the district for ratepayers to be 5.9% from July 1st,2023.

The Sheffield Waddington Township Committee, as its last function, would like to invite everyone from our local area to a get together to publicly thank all the volunteers, both past and present, that have served our community on the following committees, that the Council has now disestablished, such as the Hall, Swimming Pool, Domain, Pavilion, plus the Book Exchange and Township Committee itself.

These committees diligently served as an arm of the Council in some form for over a century and now the Council has decided to take control of these assets. These volunteers gave their time for the betterment of the community, so this function is an opportunity to thank everyone for their commitment. All is not lost; Council has assured these facilities will still be available for the users. Like Matariki, the Council has created new beginning.

There will also be an opportunity to say farewell to Desirae Johnson and possibly welcome the incoming owners of the Hotel.
