CROSSED PATHS
Te Huanui is looking forward to hosting a local lineup with five Canterbury-based artists for the month of May. Featuring the work of artists Lauren Carmichael , Veronica Ek, Lara Pomroy, Nic Preece and Julie Shanks , there is a beautiful eclectic mix sure to delight viewers as we view our artist’s creative journey and their crossing paths through the Canterbury art scene.
The exhibition runs from Friday, April 28th through until Thursday, May 25th, with the official opening from 6pm on Friday, April 28th, which will include drinks, nibbles and art chat. The Galley members and artists would love for you to join them.
Lauren Carmichael chooses to live her life by, “Life is a canvas, and it is our duty to paint it colourful.” It extends into her home, choice of clothes, cooking (she is a chef by trade) but most of all into her art.
Raised on a family farm in rural Canterbury, mountains, rivers and the network of the plains inspire much of Lauren’s artwork. The mediums and creative processes Lauren uses vary, she works predominantly in acrylic but also paints on fabric and
papers that she then uses in mixed media works. Lauren enjoys both the solitary meditative practice of art, as well as the collaborative meeting of minds she finds through the art groups she belongs to.
Veronica Ek was born and raised in Norway, where she studied Design and Photography. She lived a fairly nomadic life in the years before moving to New Zealand, travelling around the world working at skydive clubs as a parachute packer and a ski instructor in winter. Moving to Christchurch was the first time in many years that she was not drifting from place to place, country to country, giving her the time and stability to develop her love and appreciation for painting and creating art. Veronica takes inspiration from all the places she has been, but mostly her home of Norway and the far north where the Aurora Borealis is often seen in the night sky. Oil painting has become one of her favourite mediums, lending itself perfectly for the technique of painting Auroras. This style of painting is fast becoming her staple. After trying many mediums and motifs, oil painting and memories of the northern lights always sit at the forefront of her mind and holds a special place in her heart.
Lara Pomroy was raised in a rural environment in Pleasant Point, South Canterbury and has lived in West Melton for the past twenty five years. With over twenty years experience, she is an established contemporary artist.
Lara has produced work for galleries and sold internationally over the years, but more recently, she began an art group and taught introductory classes around the kitchen bench. The response was overwhelming, leading her to establish a dedicated space, Art West Studio, to create and teach art.

DARFIELD POOL
Darfield Pool will be the place to be this summer, with a swathe of exciting upgrades and new equipment being installed ahead of the swimming season.
The Selwyn District Council begun carrying out the second stage of improvements at the pool recently, which will see a hydro slide installed, as well as a new water heating system, water features for the toddler pool, and new grandstand seating.
Council Aquatics Operations Manager Nick McConaghty said, “The revamp will freshen up the popular facility and ensure visitors have a fantastic time at the pool through the warmer months.
“This is a great opportunity for Darfield. With the district’s growth continuing at pace, we need to make sure the pool remains a great place for our communities to be proud
of, before further long-term decisions are made down the track,” Nick concluded. The upgrades are part of a $2.4 million redevelopment project for Darfield Pool, which is being delivered in two stages. Last year, the Council refurbished the changing rooms, painted the exterior building and replaced the fence along Greendale Road.
In addition to the hydro slide, heating system, toddler pool water features and grandstand seating being delivered in the second stage of the project, the
Council will also undertake ground works for the main pool pipe work, install acoustic fencing beside the school, erect new shading, upgrade the pool plant filtration and dosing equipment and install a new liner for the main pool. The improvements were decided on with feedback from pool visitors and Darfield Primary School. The work is being undertaken by Armitage Williams, and is expected to be completed by November.

Julie Shanks began carving in Upper Hutt in 2013 and has mostly taught herself. Since moving to Kirwee four years ago, she has become more involved in local art through the Selwyn Artists Collective, Te Huanui and Arts Heart, allowing her to develop and extend her work. Julie’s inspiration comes from the shapes, light patterns and textures she sees in nature,
the landscape, structures and buildings around her, plus artworks and photos. Textures, light and shadows are important aspects for her to include in her work.
It is important to Julie to give new life to (often) discarded materials and items, experimenting by repurposing and reusing them can be challenging. She has used wood and pieces of trees, shells, stones, wires, glass blocks and dishes bought from op shops, along with insulators from power
poles. Some of the stones she has been using are weathered and from old buildings. She enjoys exploring the contrasts between the materials and stone, especially the feel, texture and colour. One of the aspects Julie loves about working with Oamaru stone is the feel of it. She is happy when people are drawn to experience more from the stone by touching them.

Local, West Melton Pilates group joins national effort to raise vital funds for Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand (BCFNZ).
“We are joining a national effort to support Kiwis affected by breast cancer by hosting a Pink Ribbon Morning Tea. Our Pilates girls will be serving food and refreshments at the West Melton Community Centre on Wednesday, May 31st, from 10am, commented co-organiser, Robyn Moore
“We would love our West Melton village locals to join us for a cuppa. Cash donations accepted at the door or visit the donation page listed below to donate,” concluded Robyn.
Pink Ribbon Breakfast is Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand’s annual campaign to raise vital funds for breast cancer research, patient support,

Ah-Leen Rayner , chief executive of Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand said, “We are so grateful to everyone who takes part in the Pink Ribbon Breakfast. Thanks to the generosity of Kiwis up and down the country, we are able to continue our life-saving work.
“The proceeds raised from Pink Ribbon Breakfast will bring us one step closer to our vision of zero deaths from breast cancer. So, please get involved in whatever way you can - your support will make a real difference,” Ah-Leen concluded.
Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand is a not-for-profit, nongovernment funded organisation
that depends on donations and fundraising for its work in breast cancer education and awareness, medical research and training grants, advocacy and supporting Kiwis with breast cancer. The report, adopted by the Selwyn District Council on Wednesday, April 19th, noted the delivery on a series of major projects, along with a strong performance on supplying services to a growing district in the year to June 2022.
The year saw the completion of landmark projects in the opening of Te Ara Āteathe multifunctional civic centre, Library and home to nationally significant taonga, the extremely
popular artificial hockey and football turfs at Foster Park and the Toka Hāpai Selwyn Health Hub, hosting maternity, community dental, mental health, radiography and physiotherapy services. The report also details the Council’s on-going service delivery including supply of 8.8 million cubic metres of drinking water, rubbish and recycling services to 25,500 households, 50 kilometres of road sealing and the operation of 545 reserves and playgrounds and 706 hectares of recreation reserves.
Waikirikiri Selwyn has continued its position as one of the strongest economies across Aotearoa, with GDP for the district growing by 6.9% the second fastest growing economy over the 2020/21 year. Population growth also outstripped the rest of the country, with the population growing 4.8% over the year to June 2022 to 79,300.
“The Annual report details a good response to growth, with long held plans realised through the new facilities completed and begun,” commented Mayor Sam Broughton

TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND
Darfield’s Rob Potts once again rode in the Hynds Team to raise money for the Heart Foundation in the biennial Tour of New Zealand. The Tour went from Arthurs Pass, down the West Coast to Arrowtown, covering approximately 460km over five days of racing, with 3,700m of climbing.
Day 1 started at the Temple Basin Car Park, with a 95km ride to Hokitika. The wind was blowing and the rain was bucketing down, it was a dicey ride down the viaduct and battling with cars returning to Christchurch on the one-way bridges. Hot soup and heaters were required in Hoky Pokey (Hokitika).
Day 2, Ross to Franz, was shortened to 65km due to thunderstorms, and just as well as Rob had a series of punctures and ended up nursing a group of slower riders.
Day 3, Fox to Haast, was 121km and undulating riding and it was still raining.
Day 4, Haast, up the steep pass and down to Hawea, close to 130km of riding and 1,500m of ascent but no crashes or mechanical issues.
Final day, Wanaka over Crown Range and into Arrowtown, with only 850m of climbing but quite steep in places. Even though the race started in waves, with slower groups starting early, the leading bunch got quite big and there was a bit of traffic, so Julian Dean (four time Tour de France rider) put the hammer down and pinged group after group out the back - I didn’t see him again until the Tour dinner
and prizegiving up the Gondola in Queenstown. There was no podium finish this year for the Hynds Men’s Team, but the Hynds Mixed Team came second.
Rob would like to thank the Malvern Lions, his employer Lowe Environmental Impact for their contributions and the many Malvern locals who have put some of their hard-earned dollars into the sponsorship. He has also received donations from Australia, England and Holland. His tally to the cause is sitting at
$2,500, and the Hynds team is at $26,000, so we still need an injection to reach the team goal of $50,000. Heart disease is New Zealand’s biggest killer, you never know when it will be your turn!
Rob would also like to thank Hynds for sponsoring the team and organising and paying for all the accommodation, food, travel, etc.

MALVERN U3A REPORT
Malvern U3A were very fortunate to have as their guest speaker this month, Lynda Seaton, a local historian and genealogist. The subject of her talk was ‘Necroiconology,’ a word coined by Linda which means the understanding of grave symbols. What a fascinating talk it was, as most of us do not realise how much social history is there in graveyards with the symbols of life, death and the afterlife. There is so much to learn of our forebears, just by researching their grave symbols which were very important to the Victorians and earlier funerals.
For instance, many people seeing an anchor on a gravestone today would presume that the departed had been a
seafarer or died at sea but in most cases the anchor is, the anchor of hope. The three figures of faith, hope and charity are used on many gravestones.
Angels are a very common theme on gravestones, as they are seen as God’s messenger and are depicted in various poses symbolising taking the body up to heaven for the afterlife.
Many classical figures are depicted in Greek or Roman style representing the mourners at the funeral.
A young child’s grave often has a pious child on their knees with a lamb and an angel with outstretched hands ready to raise them up to heaven.
Many gravestones feature a lamp or urn with a flame to show the
way for the departed. Some even have a carved lighthouse to guide the soul to a safe harbour of rest.
Flowers of course are prevalent on many stones and the lily, with buds still unopened, is used for a young child. Roses on graves do not have thorns, as the thornless rose is a symbol of the afterlife. There are many more examples of information on gravestones and funeral monuments, the list is very comprehensive and interesting.
Lynda also does graveyard tours of local cemeteries and if anyone is interested, please get in touch with Malvern U3A who can put you in touch with her. In all, a fascinating and informative talk enjoyed by the members.
Next month’s speaker is Frieda Looser , with a very relevant topic, “Cousins on a Collision Course.” This looks at the relationship between Russia and Ukraine.

NICOLA GRIGG - OPINION PIECE
Last week, the National party released the first tranche of our three-part agricultural policydrawing a very clear line in the sand that, unlike Labour, we are the party that is going to cut the unnecessary red tape and get our farmers back actually farming. As anybody in Canterbury knows, farming is the backbone of New Zealand’s economy, and I am proud that our farmers are the best in the world. Selwyn has one of the fastest-growing GDPs in the country, and that is thanks to the hard work done by our rural sector.
Last year, New Zealand’s agriculture exports totalled $41 billion, or 63 percent of our goods exports. When farmers succeed, New Zealand succeeds. However, since coming to power, Labour has waged war on farmers by burying them under a mountain of unnecessary and unworkable red tape - including introducing or changing more than twenty new or amended regulations that directly affect
the ability of business operations in the agricultural sector. For example, ‘wetlands’ are so poorly defined that farmers are having to go to court to determine whether land is a boggy paddock that can be farmed or a protected wetland that can’t. This is adding to the uncertainty and frustration amongst the existing impractical working environment. Farmers end up spending more of their time and money grappling with Labour’s new rules and have less to invest in their farms, risking lower productivity. For example, the Government’s delays in finalising their rules for freshwater farm plans alone are going to cost Canterbury farmers $7 million in consent fees. These costs get passed on to consumers, so we all end up paying for Labour’s over-regulation. Labour has used rules and regulations to try to run farms from Wellington. That ends under National.
National’s Getting Back to Farming package will cut the mountain of red tape to help farmers get on with earning the income on which their livelihoods, New Zealand’s economy and New Zealanders’ standard of living, depend. We have been hearing the cries from the sector for the past five years, and we hear you. We want to put the pride and practicality back into farming.
We’ll get Wellington out of farming and ensure farming regulations are fit for purpose and are workable in each area of the sector, rather than imposing a generic set of rules that just don’t work. National will return the management of local issues to local councils. We’ll ensure rural communities have the tools they need to continue to provide New Zealand, and the world, with high-quality, low-carbon food and fibre.
In contrast to Labour’s heavy-handed centralisation,
National supports practical environmentalism. We are committed to a carefully balanced approach, integrating both environmental and economic goals. National will deliver a professional, competent regulatory system that targets environmental outcomes without telling farmers how to run their businesses, and while imposing the minimum compliance costs on them.
We have also been working closely with the export sector to reinstate live shipments of cattle offshore at the absolute highest level of animal welfare standards possible. We firmly believe New Zealand farmers are the best in the world, which is why we are backing farmers to uphold the highest standards of animal welfare. As National’s spokesperson for Animal Welfare, I care very deeply for all animals.
Most ships in current use are refurbished container shipsthese are fundamentally unsuitable for live exports and should not, and will not, be allowed to carry livestock under a National Government. I recently paid a visit to the last vessel to leave the Napier port prior to the ban of live exports that comes into effect at the end of the month - a custom-made ship with incredible facilities, good drainage, rubber flooring, air conditioning, sawdust bedding, plenty of food and water reticulation. This is the world-class standard National will regulate for, and we will tolerate nothing less. This is only the start. This country does not need more rules. It needs better regulation. National will be announcing more policies on agricultureand many other things - in the coming weeks and months. And in government, National will deliver results so that all New Zealanders get ahead.
Nicola Grigg, Selwyn MP.

YOUNG FARMERS SPEED SHEAR
Wow, what a night, West Melton Young Farmers (WMYF) will remember Saturday, April 15th, as they held their first ever speed shear as a fundraiser to raise funds for people affected by cyclone Gabrielle, raising a total of $4,870. Fifty percent of the funds will be donated to rural support, which will be handed out to those in need who have been affected by this devastating cyclone.
As a Club, we didn’t know how this event was going to go or what to expect as we hadn’t had that much interest generally
before the event. People entered on the day and what an amazing turn out, not only of shearers but supporters, as well as, people who came along for an evening out. Our amazing twenty competitors who travelled from all over the Canterbury region, we really can’t thank you enough for your support towards our event.
Thank you to our amazing sponsors who got in behind us and kindly donated prizes and gifts to either go into the raffle, spot prizes or the Auction. A huge shout out goes to D J
Webster Shearing Ltd for donating not only gear but time and a shearer for preparing and doing the sheep up for the event. Ellesmere Transport for the use of the curtain sider and transporting the lambs from Pemberley Farm in Kirwee. Our two judges, Paul Gallagher who travelled up from Fairlie and Kelvin Webster from Dunsandel, we appreciate not only your time but your commitment.
A massive thank you goes to West Melton Tavern for letting us host our event at their venue and Phil Manera for doing an amazing job of MCing the event and running the Auction. The West Melton Young Farmers Club members would also like to say a huge thanks to Ady Webster and her partner Ryan Dickey (Chair of the WMYF), who organised most of the event, without them it probably wouldn’t have gone ahead.
Congratulations to all our winners.

JUNIOR KIRWEE TENNIS CLUB
The Kirwee Tennis Club Championships and Prizegiving happened this year after a two year hiatus due to past Covid restrictions. The day began well with a good turnout of players. Thank you to Adrienne Begg, who provided the lovely food, sausages and Easter Eggs for the players to enjoy. Thank you to Chrissie Taylor , Club President, for helping out on the day and Richard Greer for helping with the draw and results.
Kirwee had five Junior teams
entered across the divisions in the Malvern Tennis competition on Saturday mornings. We also have a very strong coaching base on Tuesday afternoons provided by ‘All Things Tennis’. The children had a great season and we hope they will continue playing and hopefully some will step up into a competitive role. Thank you also to all the team managers, who made my life a lot easier. I like to give everyone a chance at doing this, so hopefully you haven't found it
RACQUETBALL
Malvern Squash are introducing Racquetball to Darfield, starting with a ladies night on Thursday, May 4th, at the Malvern Squash Courts at the Recreation Centre. The key difference between Squash and Racquetball is Squash uses a narrower, longer racket to hit a smaller, slower ball inside the lines of the court. Racquetball uses a shorter, wider
racket to hit a larger, bouncier ball around a far bigger court. So ladies, why not get your friends together and head along to try a new sport that’s very easy to play and playable by all fitness levels, $5 per night.

This man is sitting quietly reading his paper one morning peacefully enjoying himself, when his wife sneaks up behind him and whacks him on the back of his head with a huge frying pan.
“What was that for?” asks the man
“What is that piece of paper in your pants pocket with the name Marylou on it?”
“Oh Honey. Don’t you remember two weeks ago when I went to the
horse races?
Marylou was the name of one of the horses I bet on.”
The wife seems satisfied and goes off to work, feeling a bit sheepish. Three days later the man is sitting in his chair reading and his wife repeats the fryingpan swatting.
“What’s that for this time?” he asks.
“Your horse rang!”
