People searching for objects and photographs from Selwyn’s past can now find a growing online catalogue of items at their fingertips.

Several historical societies in Selwyn have begun adding their collections to online platform, eHive, in a bid to digitally catalogue and share their collectionswiththewiderpublic.

The initiative has been driven by Dunsandel Historic Society President, Dr Mike Noonan Dr Mike Noonan Mike Noonan Dr Mike Noonan who applied to Council’s new Community History Fund for a grant to buy eHive user subscriptions.

“Until now, much of Selwyn’s vast collection of photographs and records of artefacts had not been available online, and this madeitdi cultforpeopletosee whatexisted,”commentedMike.

Applica?on forms and criteria can be found at: selwyn.govt.nz/services/funding-And-grants/ selwyn-community-history-fund anyonewhoisinterested.” Dunsandel Historic Society, on behalf of the Selwyn Heritage and History Network was awarded $12,480 from the Community History Fund, with groups including Dunsandel, Ellesmere, Leeston, Ellesmere Heritage Park, Arthur’s Pass, Lincoln, Glentunnel and Hororata all using eHive subscriptions to upload their records. Funding still remains for other groups to join. The online tool will helpmuseumsseewhat local artefacts are available to be publicly displayed, Mike concluded.

An aviary, little hideaways for special quiet times and Lynda’s picking gardenbroughtsomelovelycontrastandcolour.

Mandy andyandy andy and Mark Crawford’s Mark MarkCrawford’s Crawford’s Mark Crawford’s garden in Kowhai Drive was a large garden with lovely, angled lawns and well established various garden areas. Since arriving eighteen months ago they have been reshaping and putting their own mark on the garden. There are some nice areas for sitting and relaxing amongst beautifulhydrangeas,pelargoniumsandabiggleditsiamadefor apeacefulplacetositandenjoythegardens.

The sprawling oaks, lovely beech tree, conifers and the smoke tree in full bloom made for a wonderful wander at dusk. Ann’s flower gardens were also full of treasures, and her dogwoods and gladiolitookcentrestage.

Graham entertained us with his museum of memorabilia - a treasure trove of tools, musical instruments, records, movies, photographs, history and so much more. It was a delight to speakwithhimabouthispassionforhiscollections. The committee served a lovely supper in the garden, and everyoneenjoyedachatbeforereturninghome.

The Selwyn Community History Fund is now open for applications until 30th April 2023. It is designed to support community groups to protect and promote the district’s history;providegreateraccessto Selwyn’s past; assist residents and visitors to learn about local history;andcelebrateourunique storiesandplaces.

A change for the Darfield Gun Club this month, with norwesters and dull cloud. More of the same in other words, with a brief rain shower to make it interesting shooting on February 5th. Not surprising then that there were no possibles in the eye-opener with four A Grade shooters all on 24/25. Round two was a 20 target Single Barrell event, still no RED on the board, although Brodie Brodie Brodie Brodie Mangels Mangels and Bevan Brown Bevan Brown Bevan Bevan Brown led the way with 19/20 in the A Grade. These were very good scores in the wind and a good set up with the day's prizes over eventstwoandthree. A quick break for afternoon tea and then 15 pair Double Rise to finish. The top score of 28/30 went to Brian Johnson Brian Johnson Brian Brian in the B Grade,whichlifted himto atotal of 43/50. Two scores of 29 led the C Grade. They decided to shoot o with Ross Millichamp Millichamp earning first place and Dave Scobie Dave Scobie second. Reese Cross Cross Reese Cross was third, just a singletargetadrift. Many thanks to those who worked on the damaged Trap to get it working in time for this month's shoot, as well as those who assisted in squad operations, were on afternoon teadutyandtheo ceoperator.
