Culturefest 2022
Culturefest returned to Lincoln Domain to open a fortnight of celebrations of Selwyn residents diverse history and background of so many residents who make Selwyn what it is today. From celebrating Aotearoa’s earliest settlers with Ki O Rahi and kapa haka to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Filipino Street games and over thirty five international stalls sharing food and information from across the globe, there was something for everyone. A large crowd, including many families with children, enjoyed watching, listening and even joining in the cultural performances, dancing along to music and dances from the Scottish Highlands to West African drums. Despite the rain providing a dampener to the end of the proceedings, the crowd left with huge smiles, enjoying the return of the annual favourite after its cancellation due to Covid restrictions last year. Events around the district over the next two weeks will range from exhibitions and talks to art and craft events, sports including a women’s only swim night at Selwyn Aquatic Centre, dance classes, dinners and food workshops, a tree planting and a time for new arrivals to the district to learn about volunteering opportunities. After a successful trial at other Council events, Culturefest was the first Council event to run fully under the Council’s new Sustainable Event guidelines. Food stallholders were required to use certified compostable packaging, and stations for rubbish, recycling and organics among a raft of efforts made to minimise waste and increase the sustainability of the event.
