The Darfield Gun Club have been busy lately with hosting the Greg West Memorial shoot on August 27th, closely followed by our Club Day the next weekend. It was a lovely day for the Memorial shoot, competing against teams from Waihora and Ellesmere. The 20-target match produced some good scores, with Waihora winning despite a few minor ructions as to the scoring procedure, which will need to be sorted. A 25-target Point Score match completed the day, with some excellent shooting on display.

Greg West Memorial Results: 1st: Waihora - 16 shooters, 289/16 (average score 18.06) 2nd: Darfield - 15 shooters, 264/15 (average 17.6) 3rd: Ellesmere - 14 shooters, 241/14 (average 17.21).

Club Day on September 4th, saw some less than attractive conditions, a bit breezy and dull. The Single Barrell Eye-Opener saw a few good scores, but for the most part pretty average. Better scores in the Club DTL Champs but just the two possibles to shoot-off for the Trophy. Duncan Jefferis managed to surpass Selwyn Everett to win the Trophy.

On to the Point Score and again just two 75’s, Haydyn Porritt outlasting Dave Folley to take the Trophy for this event. Also on offer was the Jefferis Cup over the whole day's scores, Heath Smith dropping just three targets to win with 117/120, a very fine display. FANTASTIC TRIP FOR SHEFFIELD RUGBY TEAMS

After another stunning rugby season and with the Blue-Chip Plains farmers having finished tailing, the irrepressible Sheffield Sharks Juniors needed to test themselves with a tour to the West Coast. Hokitika’s Kiwi Rugby Club hosted at Cass Square, with the Under 11’s playing Greymouth’s Blaketown/Marist teams (combined) at the same venue. Leaving early on Saturday, September 10th, the teams emptied the Pie Shop at Arthur’s Pass and Coach Reece Cleland commented, “we’re going to have a lot of front rowers today”. The Sharks Under 11 team played strong rugby but came up against some of the Coast’s young stars, who ran extremely well to come away with a 40-20 win. Sheffield’s Under 13’s possibly played their best game yet, making the most of the full team on both attack and defence, overcoming Kiwi’s well-drilled and physical game to claim a 5221 win. As always, the Coast laid on sunshine with no wind, so after a feed and a few words at the West’s Clubroom, we headed to watch the West Coast - Buller Heartland clash in Greymouth. Kids and adults entertained themselves for the rest of the evening with beach bonfires and refreshments. With record inflation, the kids were sent eeling to come up with breakfast, and they didn’t disappoint. Sunday morning cobwebs were blown out clay bird shooting at the Dixon family’s Nelson Creek farm, thanks to the expertise of Reece and Chris Judd. Rugby, laughter, friendship and great memories - a great weekend tour to (almost) wrap up the season.
