From the finest writer of the ghost story genre, M. R. James’s Oh Whistle and I’ll Come To You, My Lad tells the tale of a young professor who, whilst walking in an English coastal village, stumbles upon a strange whistle. When blown, this sets in motion a chain of unexpected events … In this one-man performance, Toby Burchell takes us through this chilling tale, which is recognized as one of James’s greatest ghost stories. Originally narrated by James himself as a Christmas entertainment for friends, Oh Whistle and I’ll Come To You, My Lad is the perfect ghost story for the festive season.

FESTIVAL THEATRE Eves 7.30pm Wed, Thurs & Sat Mat 2.30pm

One of the greatest British comedies ever written returns to Malvern after a successful West End run. Michael Frayn’s celebrated play serves up a riotous double bill – a play within a play. Hurtling along at breakneck speed, Noises Off follows the on and offstage antics of a touring theatre company as they stumble their way through the fictional farce, Nothing On. From the shambolic final rehearsals before opening night in Weston-super-Mare, to a disastrous matinee in Ashton-Under-Lyme seen entirely, and hilariously silently, from backstage, before we share their final, brilliantly catastrophic performance in Stockton-on-Tees.

In what may well be a world premiere, this concert will see the first performance of the first edition ever created of Francesco’s only oratorio: a fabulously dramatic, even operatic work telling the story of Daniel in the Lion’s Den. In the second half, Armonico perform one of Handel’s greatest and most dramatic choral works, the Dixit Dominus.

Direct from the RSC: Laurie Lee’s extraordinary story, told in a captivating weave of music and his own words. Red Sky at Sunrise follows Lee through his much-loved trilogy, Cider with Rosie, As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning, and A Moment of War, when Lee leaves his Cotswolds home one summer morning, and ends up fighting with the International Brigades against Franco’s forces in the Spanish Civil War. Two of our best-loved actors, Anton Lesser (Game of Thrones, Wolf Hall, Endeavour) and Charlie Hamblett (Killing Eve, Ghosts, The Burning Girls) play the role of Laurie Lee older and younger, along with a rich array of other characters. Together, they celebrate Lee’s engaging humour, as well as his darker side, in a performance that has startling resonance with modern events. Orchestra of the Swan’s music echoes Lee’s lyrical writing, from the lush Gloucestershire countryside made famous in Cider with Rosie, to the dry landscapes of Spain, via Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Walton, Holst, Britten, Albéniz, Turina and De Falla.

Featuring Stacy Green as P!nk!

A cornerstone of modern musical theatre and one of the very greatest stage satires, Oh What A Lovely War is an extraordinary theatrical journey bringing to life the folly, farce and tragedy of the First World War. Wildly satirical, visually stunning and deeply moving, it’s the musical that revolutionised modern theatre; an exhilarating, no-holdsbarred assault on the military incompetence and inconceivable disregard for human life the First World War has come to represent. Packed with timeless songs, razor-sharp satire and high jinks, Oh What A Lovely War is a hilarious, heart-breaking snapshot of life for those caught in the crossfire of conflict, a unanimous voice from the trenches and a timely warning from the theatre of war itself. Now, more than ever, it holds a mirror up to the world and speaks to us all.

There used to be an empty chair at the back of the class, but now a new boy called Ahmet is sitting in it. He’s nine years old (just like me), but he’s very strange. He never talks and never smiles and doesn’t like sweets – not even lemon sherbets, which are my favourite! After learning that he has fled his own war-torn country, Ahmet’s classmates have ‘The Greatest Idea in the World’ – a magnificent plan to reunite Ahmet with his family. An unexpected and often hilarious adventure follows, all topped off with a terrific twist. Told from a child’s perspective, balancing heart and humour, The Boy at the Back of the Class highlights the power of friendship and kindness in a world that doesn’t always make sense and reminds us that everyone needs a place to call home.

‘This is a beautiful, openhearted debut that should help children be the best they can be and realise the power of kindness.’ Book Trust Ages 7+

Within his private psychiatric clinic, Doctor Prentice is interviewing a new secretary. Geraldine wants the position but seems underqualified and uncertain about her parentage. Mrs Prentice appears, flushed and in urgent need of a drink, following an illicit encounter at the Station Hotel. In the meantime, Doctor Rance, a Government Inspector and

Sergeant Match, a policeman, arrive amidst increasing chaos with searching questions of their own. WHAT THE BUTLER SAW is Joe Orton’s most ambitious play, manic farce and masterclass in fearless comic writing. No institution, political view or tradition is safe, as Orton explores comic territory few playwrights have dared to visit.

Middle Ground Theatre Company Ltd is delighted to present the World Stage Premiere of Dial M For Mayhem, a brand new charming farcical comedy drama from the author and director of the hugely successful courtroom phenomenon The Verdict.

Wed 28th to Sat 31st

FESTIVAL THEATRE

Set against a backdrop of the unpredictable Scottish weather, complete with internal company squabbling, the antics of a shepherd and his TV watching sheep dog, a flatulent ageing soap star, and a long lost caber tossing love. Add to the mix a twinkle-eyed AA man and a missing child’s pet black rat called Norman, and the scene is gleefully set for back stage chaos and laugh-out loud hilarity!
