Lilly Hall School merger plan approved The merger between two primary schools in Maltby has been conditionally approved. Dozens of letters of objection had been sent to Rotherham Council over plans to merge Lilly Hall Junior School and Maltby Hall Infant School on the Lilly Hall site. The proposals would see extensions to Lilly Hall Junior School, the creation of a multi-use games area, extension and alterations to a car park and a new pedestrian access. The objections from residents neighbouring the school included concerns that the new outdoor play facility would cause ‘unacceptable levels of noise nuisance/ pollution’ to residents of Lilly Hall Road Council officials seemed to have some sympathy with objectors. A report to the board recommended that the proposals be rejected. Although officials were happy that environmental issues had been adequately dealt with, they felt that the “failure to adequately address the impact upon the amenities of nearby resident owing to the location and proximity of the proposed play

area and the limited mitigation measures proposed cannot outweigh the benefit of the scheme, and it is for this reason that the proposal is therefore recommended for refusal.” Objections included concerns on road congestion and building the noisiest part of the development just four. metres from homes. There were also worried that the higher stories overlooked residents’ homes. Maltby Town Council also complained that they had not been adequatetly consulted and that “the residents of Maltby have been badly served on this occasion and would request a second and more comprehensive consultation be undertaken to incorporate the views of the wider community.” The Planning Board’s approval document sets out the reasons for approving the scheme. The proposals would not result in a loss or reduction in Urban Greenspace or diminish play provision at the site. The replacement school is considered to be of a good quality modern design that will have

a satisfactory visual appearance when viewed from the surroundings, and with the revisions undertaken demonstrates that the proposals will not have an unduly detrimental impact upon the amenities of adjacent residential properties through over dominating building forms, overlooking matters, or loss of privacy. The extension of the existing playing facilities and relocated Multi Use Games Area(MUGA) along with the provision of the new footpath link are further considered to be acceptable in terms of both their location and impact upon the amenities of residential properties through noise and disturbance issues and further provide acceptable levels of outdoor sport and recreation. The impact upon the amenities of the adjoining properties through noise and disturbance of the outdoor play facility can be mitigated against by the use of acoustic barriers and management of these areas can be controlled by the imposition of a suitable condition. Furthermore it is not considered that the

re-positioned footpath would be of detriment to the safety or security of adjacent residents. Additionally, the limited removal of trees to initially facilitate a safe construction route which ultimately will revert to becoming the footpath link from Lilly Hall Road to the new school is not considered to affect the overall vitality or viability of remaining trees. Furthermore the removal of the wetland learning area and associated landscaping along with the plantation trees will not unduly affect any ecological or biodiversity matters. The revised parking layout as submitted is considered to be appropriate for the levels of staff parking associated with the proposed amalgamation of the two schools and the provision of a new footpath link to access the site and the proposed highway safety measures are not considered to be of detriment to highway safety issues. The decision is subject to appeal should any such objection take place. The full decision can be found on our website www.maltbynews.co.uk

In October of this year St Bernard’s Catholic High School are taking 23 students to South Africa to work with a community in the remote village of Ribaneng in Lesotho The community of Ribaneng live in the foothills of Lesotho and are largely subsistence farmers growing maize and corn. Woodland areas are disappearing and the manner of cooking is very hazardous and harmful. The Catholic High School in Ribenang is a vibrant focal point and agriculture is taught in a very practical manner with gardens and livestock on site. The partnership between the schools seeks to bring further facilities to this learning, via tree planting, the introduction of clean burn stoves and the construction of a school/ community reservoir if sufficient funds can be raised. The students will also be making improvements to the crop

irrigation systems and to the current school buildings. They have been fundraising for this project for just over a year and have raised £22,000 so far, but still need to raise another £10,000 to enable them to do as much community work as we possible can in the time we have in South Africa. As part of the build up to the expedition students have met a number of people from Lesotho including The Prince of Lesotho, Prince Seeiso and more recently the High Commissioner Mr Mohapi. They were shown the clean burn stoves and thermal cooking bags the students will be taking to Africa with them. They have had a great deal of support from local schools and businesses and are very grateful to everyone who has helped in any way

Charity fund raising A fund raising night was held at The Three Tuns last month for Rotherham Special Care Baby Unit, raising a staggering total sum of £2035. The race night was held because two Maltby families Glynn & Nikki Smith’s two sons Matthew and George were premature babies and both needed the help of the Unit. Meanwhile Andrew Boyd and Laura Baxter’s son Kian Boyd was born with haemophilia and was in the Unit and will need its

continuous help. Receiving the cheque on behalf of the Unit was Staff Nurse Carmel Bonnett. The money will help the on-going efforts to fund a new incubator. Everyone at The Three Tuns thanks all concerned for a fantastic turnout from family and friends on such a cold and snowy night. Special thanks to the race sponsors and the Boyd and Smith families. The Flowers of Maltby Crags

Lack of pedestrian signage and the problem of invasive bracken were among the issues discussed at the meeting of the Maltby Wood Lee Common and Crags Meadow Steering Group which was held on Wednesday 29th February. A new member of the group drew attention to the dearth of signposts for pedestrian use in Maltby and to the ways in which this makes life difficult for anyone who is not familiar with

the area. It was also noted that, increasingly, areas of the Crags which were previously grassy and rich in wild flowers had become colonised by bracken. It was also reported that the group’s display of Thomas Best’s exquisite photographs celebrating the flowers of the Wood Lee Common Local Wildlife Site would shortly be moving to Maltby Services Centre. Further information about the group can be obtained by telephoning 01709/812035.

Braithwell’s very own Lisa Faye is bringing her musical celebration of the great Barbra Streisand, ‘Streisand – The Main Event’ to Doncaster Little Theatre on March 24th as part of it’s national tour of the UK following a highly successful season in London’s West End at the Trafalgar Studios and a sell out run at the 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe where it received rave 5* reviews. Lisa takes you on a musical journey through the life, music and achievements of the greatest female recording artist of all time, Barbra Streisand. From Streisand’s first intimately recorded standard, You’ll Never Know, through to award winning films like, Funny Girl and No.1 hits such as Evergreen, including some lesser known gems along the way. Superb musical arrangements have been created by Musical Director and Arranger Allan Rogers (Strictly Come Dancing Tour) who accompanies the much celebrated Lisa Faye who in turn delivers the songs expertly, interjected

with fun and interesting anecdotes about Streisand and her music. “I was a student at the Maltby Comprehensive as it then was, and also worked with Music Factory with Andy Pickles of Academy sponsor u-explore, and was in a Jive Bunny video filmed at the school!” Lisa told maltby.news. A selection of original Barbra Streisand dresses can also be seen during the show as three gowns from various designers including Donna Karan will be on show. They were secured by the show’s creator and performer Lisa Faye in Streisand’s charity auction in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles in 2009. Lisa left her Braithwell home at 16 to follow her dream of performing and trained at The BRIT School and The Royal Academy of Music in London. Since then Lisa has worked extensively in the field of entertainment throughout the world, including on board numerous cruise ships, performing her shows at the Edinburgh Festival & BAFTA, worked alongside Mike Batt,

The Barron Knights, The Commitments, The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded an American No 1 chart hit with TV’s Jane McDonald. She also became the first vocalist to sing live on BBC Radio 5 Live in 2001 alongside BBC TV and radio

football commentator, John Motson. Saturday 24 March 2.30pm/7.30pm Doncaster Little Theatre 0130234422 www. doncasterlittletheatre. co.uk

Award for Jacqui Maltby-based Police Community Support Officer Jacqui Millward has been named as PSCO of the year for the Rotherham district at a recent South Yorkshire Police awards night. Jacqui who was nominated by Sergeant Suzanne Snowden said “It is very nice to be appreciated. I do love my job and the community I work within.

Shoe-be-doo

Local girl Julie Maddison has opened a much needed shoe shop in Maltby’s Queens Corner conveniently above the Revive hair and beauty salon. “We are a family-run business filling what we feel is a gap in the market in the town,” said Julie. In keeping with the national trend of trying to persuade shoppers to stay local and support their local High Street, Shoe-Be-Doo offers affordable fashion shoes and hand bags, as well as a range of wedding, prom and occasion items. The ranges on offer span everything from everyday needs to that big event. Julie also plans to offer children’s shoes in the near future, again saving parents that time-consuming trip out of town.

It is always nice to make a difference.” Maltby Town councillor Keith Stringer said “Like all the other members, Jacqui has always been friendly and approachable. It is always good for the people in the area to know that Jacqui and her team are there whenever we need help or advice.” KH

Five couples and a wedding in Maltby

Christina Ashmore and Cliff Meese of Cliff Hill Maltby are set for a town double in the Hallam FM Five Brides and One Wedding competition. The couple have reached the final five from hundreds of couples aiming to scoop a £25,000 dream wedding and a honeymoon in Sri Lanka. To succeed they must raise more money than their rivals for the Hallam FM Cash for Kids charity which supports local underprivileged children. Last year Laura Smith and her fiance Stuart Maude also from Maltby raised a staggering £16,176.86p in eight days. Christina and Cliff are appealing to local business to help them reach their target. “Any local busineses that would like to help us will get some good free advertising on the radio and perhaps local tv,” said Cliff. The couple already have a race night and disco organised at The Three Tuns in Stainton on Friday March 16 anyone who can help with raffle prizes or donations should contact Cliff on 07510815418. Maltby’s residents and partners clean up their streets Groundwork Dearne Valley working in partnership with Wentworth Valley Area Assembly, RMBC Green Spaces, South Yorkshire Housing Association, SY Fire and many others wanted to tackle the problems of discarded litter on the streets and green spaces in Maltby and encourage the residents to take more responsibility. Each primary school within Maltby was targeted to advertise the action days and to reinforce the importance of not littering. The partners also advertised it around Maltby and through community groups. The action days were carried out on China Town, Abbey Reach, Birks Holt and Model Village. A massive thank you to all those residents who came out and helped collect up nearly 70 bags of litter from the streets and green spaces. An

extra special thank you to all the young people who got stuck in and China Town TARA. Their help was a greatly appreciated by all the partners. The impact that just a few hours of litter picking made was astonishing. We will be planning more action days for the Easter Holidays and with thanks to Maltby Town Council GDV will be setting up a pilot young wardens scheme working with pupils from Maltby Crags Community School to start with, with the hope of rolling it out within numerous schools in Maltby. If anyone would like to find out further information about the action days or the young wardens scheme please contact Lucy Cheetham Groundwork Dearne Valley on 01226 740077 or lucy. cheetham@groundwork.org.uk

Brave cancer sufferer Abigail Fleming enjoyed her party at the Maltby Miners Welfare last month, whilst friends and family raised £1,900 to a running total of £3,500 to be split between Weston Park Cancer Hospital and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. The fundraising was Abi’s idea, asking friends to contribute to her “Bucket Fund”. She also had her own wish list and has been on a helicopter ride and met the Sheffield Steelers Ice Hockey team who brought her gifts. A big fan of Brit winner Ed Sheeran she was very excited when he sent her a personal video wishing her all the best for her party. But Ed had another surprise for Abi, and she was amazed to find him turning up at Bluebell Wood Hospice in person, to chat and sing songs for her. Doncaster College students at the Sheffield Showcase Project Ten students from the Photography and Art and Design Level 3 programmes at Doncaster College have been exhibiting their work at a shop in Sheffield, as part of the Sheffield Showcase project. Joseph Dyer, fine art lecturer, along with photography course leader Evan Wood and art Lecturer David Halewood put the exhibition together and selected the work from first and second years and recent graduates. Joseph said, “The exhibition was set up to show the quality of what we do on the two courses and hopefully broaden our catchment area. The window is one of several in Sheffield city centre that is being used to showcase creative talent and business since shops closed due to the recession. We approached a company called The Source and they allocated us

the window space.” The Sheffield Showcase is a project run by The Source in conjunction with Sheffield City Council. The project creates an outdoor gallery in the city centre, creating a better environment for customers visiting businesses still operating in the area, as well as providing opportunities for local businesses and creative individuals to contribute to the improvement of the city by showcasing their wares within the window spaces Sheffield Councillor, Ian Auckland, Cabinet Member for Business, Transport and Skills said, “The project has already seen hundreds of artists, retailers and exhibitors showcase their wares and has definitely brightened up the city centre rather than simply having boarded up windows.”

Maltby Phoenix Sword celebrate David Burley of Maltby Phoenix Sword has on his wall some photographs from the early part of the 20th century, depicting rapper sword dance teams made up of coal miners in the North East of England. He says, “These pitmen are reverentially referred to as the ‘dead old guys’. When we dance rapper we always say that the dead old guys are watching us. It reminds us where the tradition came from and it keeps us ‘on our toes’, as it were.” Maltby Phoenix Sword was formed ten years ago in Maltby, South Yorkshire, to continue and promote to a wider audience the largely forgotten tradition of English Sword Dancing. This they continue to do to great acclaim across the UK. Rapper sword dancing originated in the mining villages of the Great British Coalfield which stretched from County Durham up to Northumberland. David says, “That’s the coalfield that helped fuel the Industrial Revolution. You know, the contribution that pitmen in the UK have made for our country can never be overestimated.” As diversions from the difficult toil in the mines, men in those mining villages formed rapper teams, usually within a single family, to dance and compete with other villages, alongside football and horticulture contests. Many mining villages had their own rapper side. All those north eastern pits are now long closed and it is sobering to reflect that out of several hundred collieries across the UK there are only five working deep coal mines left. In 1984

Yorkshire had 56 collieries; now it has only two - one being Maltby Colliery in South Yorkshire. The first shafts were sunk at Maltby in 1907, and the pit delivered its first coal in 1911. Just over 100 years later, Maltby is capable of producing more than 1 million tonnes of high-quality low-phosphorous coal each year, is

Hargreaves Services plc bought Maltby from UK Coal in 2007 and has invested heavily to secure the life of the pit for many years to come. Although there are an increasing number of rapper sword teams in the UK continuing the tradition, Maltby Phoenix Sword is the only rapper sword side in the same town as a

working deep coal mine - Maltby. This unique situation should be marked and celebrated. It is fitting, therefore, that Maltby Phoenix Sword and Maltby Colliery are forming a link to work together to keep the tradition alive. Maltby Colliery Manager Simon Zanker said: “At Maltby we are always looking forward – but we never lose sight of our heritage, either. We are delighted to have this opportunity to lend our support to Maltby Phoenix Sword and we wish them every success in promoting the tradition of Rapper Sword Dancing, not just in the local area but across the country, too.” As we look at those old photographs on the wall we know that the dead old guys are watching and must be giving an approving nod.

Maltby’s longest established firm of solicitors is moving to new offices later this month. From the 19th March QualitySolicitors Walker & Co will be operating out of the former HSBC building at 82 High St. Their telephone and fax numbers will be unchanged as will their email. “We remain committed to providing a high level of service to our valued clients and contacts and so have resolved not to shut the office prior to or during the move but would like to give advance warning of potential delays in answering and returning phone calls specifically on the Friday the 16th and Monday the 19th of March,” said a spokeswoman for the firm. “Please note that in the week preceding the move there will inevitably be some disruption to normal service but we will endeavor to keep this to a minimum. We would like to thank you in advance for your patience and understanding during the transition.” Meanwhile the firm has recently undergone an independent assessment by the Law Society for Lexcel Accreditation and passed with flying colours. Lexcel is the Law Society’s international practice management standard. The Lexcel practice management standard is only awarded to solicitors who meet the highest management and customer care standards. Lexcel accredited practices undergo rigorous independent assessment every year to ensure they meet required standards of excellence in areas such as client care, case management and risk management. “You can therefore feel confident that QualitySolicitors Walker & Co are conducting matters on your behalf with the high standards that you can expect from a QualitySolicitors firm,” said Senior Partner Andrew Walker. Letters & Comment Entrepreneur’s Circle gets off to a flying start in South Yorkshire The launch meetings for South Yorkshire’s Entrepreneur’s Circle got off to a flying start in Rotherham this week. Under the guidance of local entrepreneur, marketer and business owner Terry Gormley, the Circle met for the first time in Rotherham at the Elton House Hotel in Bramley, where the subject was ‘Lovin Your Customers’ and there was an impressive turnout from all sectors. Terry explained; “Entrepreneur’s Circle is the brainchild of Nigel Botterill, a tremendously successful business man who is on a mission to help smaller business succeed against their bigger – and better resourced - competitors. I’ve known Nigel for two years now and have always been captivated by his energy and passion; I’m really delighted that he has invited me to be his Business Growth Advisor in this area. “Too often the advice available is theoretical and hard-pressed business people leave with no clear idea about what to do next – or how to do it. The Circle is quite the opposite and my aim is to make sure people leave every meeting with something practical and specific they can implement.” The Entrepreneur’s Circle was launched nationally 20 months ago. Members can go to national meetings run by Nigel Botterill, book one-to-one phone sessions with him, access online training resources, receive useful monthly newsletters – and even receive TV clips every week with nuggets of advice to keep them engaged

and motivated. Members will now also be supported in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham with local meetings and access to Terry as their Business Growth Advisor. “The last year or so has been amazing in terms of how the Circle has grown,” commented Nigel. “But I’m a realist and know that we can’t reach everyone who needs our help by staying ‘national’. By asking someone as experienced as Terry to get involved locally means we can now support so many more people in South Yorkshire and inspire then to achieve all they are capable of. I’m absolutely passionate about this and know that business people in South Yorkshire are in very capable hands!” One of the attendees at the meeting – and now a member - was Stuart Johnson of JemsIT Ltd based in Doncaster. He commented, “The Monthly BGA meeting run by Terry is informative, intuitive and very thought provoking. Terry’s passion and business knowledge is second to none, and as the meetings are local it means the challenges are relevant to my business location. I can’t afford not to be there to help my business grow.” The next local meeting of the Entrepreneur’s Circle will be on 21st March and will focus on ‘The 7 Secrets to Exploiting the World Wide Web’. If you’d like to attend, contact Terry at terry.gormley@ businessgrowthadvisor.co.uk. Or visit the website www. businessgrowthadvisor.co.uk

New Kerbside Recycling and Composting Arrangements Rotherham’s recyclers are being reminded of the changes being planned to their cardboard and garden waste collections next month. Rotherham Borough Council’s current highly successful ‘card only’ green bin collection service is due to end on Friday, March 16, and will be followed from Monday, March 19, with new SEPARATE garden waste and cardboard collections. Only garden waste can then be placed in the green bin for collection and eventual composting. However, unlike previous years, Rotherham’s householders will be asked to place any card - together with newspapers, magazines and other paper - into the blue bag for recycling. Large pieces of corrugated card that will not fit into the blue bag can be flattened, folded to size approximately 60 cm x 30 cm) and secured under the blue bag or blue

box for collection. It is hoped that a slightly larger blue bag will be available later in the year but until that time additional blue bags, if required, may be requested by contacting the Rotherham Streetpride Helpline on 01709 336003. There will be no change to any collection days and the blue box collection is not affected at all. The change from dual garden waste and cardboard to individual collections is being made because of new composting guidance by the Government’s(?)Waste Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and the Association for Organics Recycling (AfOR). The stricter limits were imposed following demands from the agricultural sector after it saw cardboard being contaminated too often with plastic and other household waste, which in turn affected the quality of the compost produced. The new, tougher standards are

set out in PAS 100 on composted materials produced by the British Standards Institution. It has resulted in the percentage of noncompostable material allowed in recycled organic waste being halved from 0.25 per cent to 0.12 per cent. Coun. Richard Russell, Rotherham Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Waste, said the best way to conform to the new standards was to no longer collect green bins containing the old mix of garden waste and cardboard. He added: “We do hope that Rotherham householders will take on board the new arrangements. Rotherham people have played a huge part in the borough’s recycling success and I am sure they will soon get the hang of the new scheme. We have to make separate collections now because unfortunately, the old way of collecting garden waste and cardboard together is no longer a sustainable option.”

Maltby Local History Society’s met at Maltby Community Library , on the afternoon of Thursday 16th February, for a lecture entitled ‘Mary Queen of Scots-The Captive Queen 1568-84’ given by David Templeman. Mr Templeman is a member of the group involved in the restoration and tourist promotion of Sheffield Manor Lodge. His talk detailed Queen Mary’s places of imprisonment, from her uninvited landing at the Cumbrian port of Workington to her execution at Fotheringhay Castle in Northhamptonshire. After her initial detention at Carlisle Castle, Mary was moved to Castle Bolton, in Wensleydale. The Earl of Shrewsbury was soon appointed as her custodian and

group viewed with very great concern a number of reports that Maltby Academy’s proposed developments meant that its iconic clock tower frontage was now under threat of demolition. Members deplored the idea and the Chair was asked to make representations on the matter. The Society’s next meeting will take place at 7pm Thursday 15th March when former Maltby Local History Society Chair, Christine Smith, will talk about the Society’s Maltby Millennium Photographic Project. The evening will include the chance to view a selection of the photographs and anyone interested is invited to attend free of charge. Further information is available on 812035. By Alice Rodgers

his interests in Derbyshire and the surrounding area ensured Mary’s continuing detention in a series of large and secure locations away from Scotland, London and the coast. Tutbury Castle, in Staffordshire , Wingfield Manor, Chatsworth and Buxton, in Derbyshire, and Worksop Manor, in Nottinghamshire, all figured in the story but the greater part of Mary’s detention was in Sheffield’s Castle and at Manor Lodge which lay within its park. Bugsy and The Prom Fayre at Maltby Acdemy

Here is just a taster of the fun that was had at The Prom Fayre last month at Maltby Academy. There was a great turn out on the evening and the effort which had been put in to organising the event was apparent on the night. There were stalls by many local companies. School staff were involved on and off stage in putting on the show and staff and students took to the catwalk with gusto. Prom outfits were on display with a host of accessories, whilst beauty and hair tips were given out by Revive. The special night later this year would not be the same without the ubiquitous limousine and even those too were on display for hire.

Sport Caroline and Janet medal again

Maltby Main suffer heartbreaking loss at the hands of Retford Town Maltby Main suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of table-topping Retford Town at the beginning of the month. 3-1 down with just 10 minutes left on the clock the visitors struck three times to seal a win which took them back to the top of the table. As in recent weeks Steve Adam’s men took the game to thte opposition playing some neat football, but once again the ball simply did not run for them. United took the lead on 19 minutes when Steve Carty’s speculative long-range effort looped into the net. Main leveled when Rob Branagan met a corner from the right, and then went on to dominate the remainder of the half forcing a succession of corners. After a bright start to the second period from Retford Main

wrersted control again, and with 20 minutes left Tom FoltymBrown fired in from close range. Things got even better when Scott Mellon converted a spot kick seemingly assuring Main of three vital points. Then the wheels came off in alarming fashion. First with 80 minutes on the clock Haslam headed home, before with just two minutes remaining Slack brought the visitors level with a shot from the edge of the box. Incredibly there was still time for Haslam to strike again to hand Retford victory. Main can only hope their luck changes in the remaining games if they are to escape the drop.
