MSF Overview

Mallee Sustainable Farming Inc. (MSF) is a farmer driven organisation delivering research and extension services to the less than 350mm rainfall Mallee cropping regions of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.

MSF OPERATES within a region of over four million hectares, extending beyond Balranald (NSW) in the east to Murray Bridge (SA) in the west.

THE MSF LEGACY

MSF was formed in 1997 in response to a recognion that conservaon farming pracces had not been widely adopted across the region. There was a need to idenfy the issues restricng the adopon of technology that would enhance the development of profitable and sustainable farming systems. In the first 21 years of operaon, MSF has achieved a great deal in partnership with Mallee farmers. Increases in farm profitability have been observed as a result of acvies undertaken in conjuncon with industry sciensts and advisers, along with environmental and social gains.

MSF connues to strive to be relevant to farmers’ informaon needs, whether in the sphere of cereal cropping or livestock management, supporng farmers to increase their knowledge and skills to meet connually changing producon, environmental, climate and market challenges.

OUR MEMBERS

The Mallee has approximately 2000 dryland farming families whose farming acvies include cropping (wheat, barley, oats, lenls, chickpeas, vetch, lupins and canola) and livestock (sheep for wool, lambs and cattle for meat).

MSF acvies are open to all farmers with a strengthening membership base receiving new and mely informaon on research, best management pracces and praccal soluons. Such acvies include trial sites, field days, farmer groups, innovave virtual reality extension products and research compendiums available on-line.
