P. Mallam, in recognition of eighteen years faithful service, 13 June 1901’, monogrammed to case back ‘TB’, case diameter 5cm
It is likely that this watch was presented by Henry Parr Mallam (1838 1906), who is listed in the 1901 census as a surgeon and widower residing at 91 High Street, Oxford, with three daughters and four servants. Mallam served as President of the Oxford branch of the British Medical Association and Medical Officer to the workhouse and Poor-law schools. H. P. Mallam’s forebears include Thomas Mallam, who served as Mayor of Oxford from 1839-40 and 1846-47 and Richard Mallam, who founded Mallam auctioneers and estate agents at St Aldate’s, Oxford in 1788. £300-500 (plus 27% BP*) 256.
