Dear Readers

There was a fair amount of chat at the breakfast bar this morning about what topic would form the basis of this month’s editorial. Daughter No. 1 enthusiastically suggested the much anticipated (in her world) new release of Minecraft on June 1st, or ‘the weather’. Daughter No.2 came up with ‘forthcoming events’ and helpful husband thought that the subject of camping would be a good one, before remembering just in the nick of time that we did that last month (and yes, we were very lucky with the weather this time, by the way). Hmmm… what to choose…. June of course is a popular month for Church, School and Community Summer Fairs, although the weather can often disappoint we will keep fingers crossed this year as there’s lots going on locally - make sure you check out listings on page 37. Our school fair, held last week enjoyed beautiful sunshine – so much so that the bar virtually ran dry with over an hour to go. Raising over a staggering £7,000 it really was a credit to the small and dedicated team of volunteers who organised it – as well of course to everyone who turned up and contributed to this grand total. So this month’s editorial is dedicated to all of you who are tirelessly working to make these events a success – remember it’s not too late to offer your services even for an hour or two at these June events, and all help, particularly with the clearing up (when everyone just wants to collapse) is always particularly appreciated. I hang my head in shame as I admit to sloping off before the finish with an aching back (too much bending over a low table at the bar – and before you jump to conclusions, I was serving for 3 hours, not drinking!) Have fun, take part and get involved – in whichever way you choose or are able to. You’ve probably noticed by now that New Malden’s a great place to get stuck in and meet new people – so come on and join the community! Anyway, a big thank you to everyone who has contributed and advertised this month If you’re a local business wanting to reach out to your local community then why not call for a chat about affordable advertising in your local community magazine. Remember, we deliver to most homes every second month so if you’re not able to pick up a magazine on the months it’s not delivered to you, you can read it on your smart phone/tablet or PC. Until next month, best wishes

“Shall I Serve Myself?” by James Giles

Post Offices matter. There is no question about that. Whether you are a child sticking a stamp to the envelope for the first time or a pensioner collecting your pension, everybody from all walks of life use Post Offices. New Malden is no exception to this rule. With a high elderly population that still collect their pension at the Post Office, it is particularly shocking that Post Office Limited made four members of staff redundant in April 2014. This is along with two members of staff that were made redundant in 2012 I had the support of James Berry, Conservative and 2013. I have worked out that this represents a Parliamentary Candidate for Kingston and Surbiton, 50% reduction in staff at New Malden Post Office and Terry Paton, Beverley Ward Councillor (CON). compared to two years ago. New Malden History at the height of summer when members (and others) could show their flowers, fruits and vegetables to their best advantage. A venue was provided in one of the meadows belonging to Coombe House and permission for the show was given by the then tenant of the property William John Compton a director of a company which manufactured uniforms for the army, police and railway companies, who had been elected President of the society. A large marquee which had been erected for the public, provided relief from the hot sun, which beat down for most of the day. Another two large tents were erected to hold the exhibits of flowers, fruit, and vegetables. Some of the local nurseries exhibited but did not enter any competitions. Arthur Luff who had only started his Heathersett Nursery in Coombe Road two years earlier earned praise for his bouquets and cut flowers, and George Aylott whose nursery was at Beaconsfield Villas (134 Kingston Road) was admired for his bouquets and floral arrangements. Readers will remember that Malden in the 1870s was very much a divided community. The wounds however were completely healed by the turn of the century, and events were organised where everybody could come together. One such event was the formation of a new group called “The Maldens, Coombe, and Worcester Park Horticultural and Cottage Garden Society” in 1899. The society had been proposed by Mr Henry Jenkins of Woodfield in Malden. Mr Jenkins was a respected member of the community, and a councillor for Old Malden. Jenkins had also been the driving force behind the establishment of a local fire brigade. One of the main functions of a horticultural society was to hold an annual show, normally  

nurseries such as the one operated by Mr John Hill on the corner of Cambridge Road and Raby Road also exhibited in this category. Mini market Attached to the exhibition was a “Tradesmen’s Bazaar”, where the enterprising shopkeepers of Malden could demonstrate their craft with the hope of increasing their customer base. Charles Smith who operated a bakers and confectioners in Coombe Road did a brisk trade in tea and cakes, whilst the various local dairies sold milk, cream and butter. Arthur Hampton who owned a small bakery in the Market Place also tempted new and existing customers, but by far the most popular stall was that run by Cleasby Chorley the chemist who sold a wide range of perfume, and their own range of mineral waters which

they dispensed free. The Victoria Nursing Institute was also represented where the vicar’s wife and other ladies dispensed button holes for gentlemen, and posies for ladies all made from fresh flowers grown locally. Whilst the main prizes were won by gardeners at the large houses at Coombe and Kingston Hill, John Buzwell of Grafton Road won awards for his fuchsias, and geraniums and the best front garden amongst others, and in the allotments category there was a great battle between Granville Coole (Cambridge Road) Edwin Alder (Avenue Road), and Ambrose Dodson (Northcote Road), with Coole taking the honours. The ladies prizes were taken by Julia Johnstone, the daughter of John Brown Johnstone owner of Coombe Cottage with her basket and centrepiece of flowers.

Other attractions Also held on the same day were sports for the villagers, a demonstration by the fire brigade, a cricket match, juggling, and cartoon drawing demonstration. Together with roundabouts, and swings the day proved a great success for all who attended. The evening saw the prize giving, followed by dancing to the Maldens and Coombe Military Band lead by Arthur Timbers. The following year (1900) the event was again staged in the grounds of Coombe House. The fact that the exhibition was praised as being better than the previous year was down to the organisation of the two secretaries of the society Frederick Cottrall of Chestnut Grove and Thomas Welham of Kingston Road. Many more entrants took part, and the quality of exhibits had risen. Mr Luff’s exhibit covered over 50 feet with palms, lilies, begonias, and caladiums, while Mr Aylott showed his expertise in producing bouquets and floral designs of a harp and broken column. The gardener to Mrs Blake in Motspur Park even

succeeded in producing some grapes. The stall in aid of the Nursing Institute was again present selling buttonholes and posies. Once more, the competition was divided into divisions; the main prize (challenge cup) was won by the gardener at Coombe Cottage (Mr D Gibson). Mr Walter Watson of Hazeldene Coombe Road was successful with his roses, fruits and vegetables, while Mr Buzwell was again the winner amongst the cottagers for his front garden. The best allotment award was given to Charles Poulter of Elm Road

whose mother ran the local greengrocers. As in former years, children’s sports were held in the afternoon, and the Maldens and Coombe Orchestral Band played at intervals. A demonstration drill was given by the fire service who also took part in the tug of war competition losing out to the police in the final. Unfortunately, the promised roundabouts and swings were not available, but after the presentations in the evening dancing took place which was greatly enjoyed by the children. New tenant The next year the flower show once more took place in the grounds of Coombe House, even though there was a new tenant of the property; Carl Friederich Von Siemens the son of the founder of the electrical and communications company which bears his name.

Again Messrs Luff and Aylott produced exhibits not for competition, but of exceptional quality. Mr Poulter was successful as before with his allotment, while James Bryant of Kingston Road won the prize for best front garden. The Surrey County Council judge said the garden was “the best he had seen for a garden of small dimensions!” The Maldens and Coombe Brass Band were

in attendance to play a selection of music throughout the day, and the swings and roundabouts were back for the children along with their sports After the judging, dancing took place, and the day did not end until ten o’clock. The sun was always shining 1902 saw the local community assemble again in the grounds of Coombe House in glorious weather. Mr Luff again set the standard for excellence with a cushion, anchor and fan design in red white and blue (this was the year of the coronation of Edward VII which was to take place three weeks later). Mr Poulter was successful once more with his allotment, and James Bryant with his front garden. The children’s sports were popular again, together with the fire brigade display. This year entertainment came from the Malden and Coombe Brass Band, and an interesting demonstration of bee keeping by the Surrey Beekeepers Association. These together with a display by the Malden College Cadet Corps kept the visitors entertained throughout the afternoon. Rides, such as the galloping horses (carousel) and, swings were enjoyed throughout the day. After the prizes were distributed by Mrs Siemens dancing commenced to the music of the Brass Band and the day ended with a firework display with some of the rockets bought for the Coronation celebrations. The 1903 Floral Show and Fete followed the pattern of previous years including the wonderful weather. Again, held in the grounds of Coombe House, this year Mr Luff not only had his marvellous flora l arrangements on display, but also a section of a hive showing the bees working on a comb to the interest of the Malden public. Henry Saunders of Grafton Road took the honours for his front garden, but Granville Coole won for his window plants, geraniums, bouquet, ferns, strawberries and onions. The best allotment went to William Thompson of Kingston Road. This year the society also awarded prizes for the best cottage garden won by Charles Appleby of Dickerage Lane, while another new award for model garden went to Ben Plumridge 12

of Cleveland Road, who also took the prize for his sweet peas, and fuchsias. The sports were followed by a display from the Surrey Imperial Yeomanry, taking part in Heads and Posts, Tilting the Ring, and Lemon Cutting, all on horseback. The local brass band was again in attendance, and the Malden College Cadet Corps gave another demonstration including Italian sword stick and physical drills. These fetes and shows were to continue being staged at Coombe House until the advent of the First World War. They became the social event of the year locally, when all classes mixed together. It was practically a whole day out for all the family. There were contests for children, spectacular displays, and dancing to the local band. Do not forget the healthy competition between gardeners, a common interest in all things horticultural. On 7th May, last Wednesday eve, I walked a frail friend home. Having made my ‘good byes’, I proceeded up King’s Avenue and Malden Hill Gardens towards the narrow passage leading to Blagdon Road. The time was a little past 9 pm - and then it happened! Being a little tired, I fell and even a near lamp post only served to break the fall, but did not prevent it. There I lay, unable to get up. The street was quiet and I prayed that a dog owner would not walk his Rottweiler just at that time. Then, on the other side of the street, a lady appeared and I raised my arm appealing “can you please help me!” What had I started! In a few moments the lady had summoned her daughter, both came and a little crowd of neighbours joined. I was asked my name : “Monika with a k” I answered (being German). Soon a Quilt was brought and shading hands kept my face warm, others stroked me, calming me, but nobody listened to my pleas just to pull me up and let me go on my way. NO! An ambulance was called and one of the young men in the group ran to Blagdon road to fetch my neighbour Brenda Mortlock. This kind Kiwi has helped me in innumerable ways since my husband passed away. She came with me on the ambulance and, having been a Sister, stayed with me in Kingston Hospital until the early hours of Thursday morning. Having returned home she came back later in the morning after very little sleep to bring me home.

Phoenix rises from the ashes!

As another national brand suffers with the fallout of the recent recession, a local Fitness Instructor has ceased an excellent opportunity. News broke in February that Rosemary Conley Food & Fitness has released Franchises from their contracts, due to insolvency. Lucy Napier-Ford (former Franchisee for 10 years) has taken charge. Lucy’s new business name is CLUB LIVEWELL, which offers a high level of service based on the Rosemary Conley model, with a more local and personal touch. Lucy has helped many people get fitter; not just on a short term basis, but for life. Since 2004, Lucy has run 9 classes in Richmond, Twickenham, Kingston and New Malden. My motto is, ‘Adding years to your life and life to your years.’

“My passion is to see people improve, and maintain quality life for as long as possible.” “We are so much more than a fitness class,” Lucy explains passionately. “The classes not only help you lose weight through a weight-loss coaching service, but also include a short talk AND a 45 minute fatburning exercise session.” Lucy underlines, “Moving forward with this new business, I will offer a more flexible approach to the diet, encouraging healthy eating and portion awareness. With 10 years of experience, I feel confident that I can offer a tailored approach to eating plans”. She closes positively by saying, “Although I have had some brilliant years with Rosemary Conley, I am so excited to be starting this new business. There are a wide range of exercises styles offered at ‘Club LiveWell’ -Salsasize, HITT, body conditioning, Fitness Pilates and good old fashioned aerobics. Best of all, there is a great camaraderie between all members, and we have a great time, whatever we are doing.”

This burst of beautiful, sunny weather has made me feel that Summer is on its way and plans are beginning to take shape for the annual Funday Sunday in Beverley Park, in aid of the Lunchbowl Network. This year’s event takes place from 12-4pm on Sunday 6th July (the day after the Carnival parade). Once again, there will be races for the whole family, the annual welly throwing trophy to be decided and plans for other highland games to be contested. The Malden Centre generously sponsor the trophies and medals provided by Toms Trophies. As well as the sporting activities, there will be a delicious range of food and drink available. This year we are thrilled to confirm that Korea Foods will once again be serving up some delicious fayre. Last year, the aroma of their various dishes cooked fresh in the park tempted many to join us and Korea Foods sold out and were hugely generous in donating their entire £400 profits to Lunchbowl. Why not come and try some for lunch and see the community mayhem taking place?!

As well as Korean food, there will be a Barbeque , candy floss and other sweet treats, tea and cake, watermelon slices and the ever popular pimms and beer tent! If watching rather than taking part is more your thing, why not bring your picnic rug or chair to the park get yourself some lunch and a drink and settle down to watch either the live local action or the Wimbledon men’s tennis final on the big screen. Last year, when all the races had finished, there was still a big crowd gathered by the big screen to see Andy Murray lift the trophy. So much more fun because we were all together! All profits from Funday, sporting and gastronomic, go to the Lunchbowl Network. This is a locally based charity which raises money to feed and care for 450 orphans living in extreme poverty in the Kibera Slum, Nairobi. With the incredible generosity of the people of New Malden, The charity has fostered all the homeless orphans, sends them all to school and makes sure they receive two nutritious meals a day, a far cry from the rubbish pile they scavanged for food when the charity began in 2006. We have also opened our first Lunchbowl Kindergarten for the endangered under 5’s and send our threatened teenage girls out of

Its certainly not luxurious by our standards but its a far cry from the conditions of a living hell experienced in the Slum. Lunchbowl has no paid staff either in the UK or Kenya and so many incredible local sponsors donate to Funday that profits are maximised and every £1 raised feeds 3 children. 1 Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat together until light and fluffy. Beat in the lemon zest and egg then sift over the flour and mix to a crumbly dough. 2 Gather the mixture together with your hands and knead on a floured surface until smooth. Flatten to a disc shape, wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for about 45 minutes. 3 Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°F/gas mark 4. Line two baking sheets with baking parchment. 4 Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to a 5mm thickness and using a 6cm round cookie cutter stamp out 16 circles, re-rolling the dough as necessary. 5 Place the circles of dough on the baking sheets. Spoon about ½ teaspoon of lemon curd in the centre of each circle then pull up two sides of the each circle and pinch together tightly to seal. Chill in the fridge for a further 30 minutes. 6 Bake in the preheated oven for 12-14 minutes until pale golden. Cool for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire cooling rack and leave to cool completely. Serve dusted with icing sugar. TIP The chilled dough will keep in the fridge for 2-3 days. Leave at room temperature for about 20 minutes to allow the dough to soften a little before rolling out otherwise it may crack. .

View from the City Hurrah For British Manufacturing – Bravo Ireland by Justin Urquhart Stewart

Bravo Eireann I wasn’t expecting to see this headline quite so soon but nonetheless it’s still a welcome one - ‘Ireland’s borrowing costs fall below the UK’s’. Well if ever there was a sign of recovery, confidence and some success it has to be the cost of a country’s debt. For the first time in 6 years the yields on the 10 year Irish bonds and UK Gilts swapped over. The Irish yield on the bonds fell to 2.656% - remarkably cheaper than the equivalent UK Gilt yield of 2.683%. This though does not seem to be a blip but rather a pattern as we can see similar trends with their shorter two year and five year debt. Now whilst such figures are definitely encouraging and show a greater level of confidence, the governments in those recovering Euro nations under their old acronym of PIGS all have to try and turn such data into something far more difficult to achieve - popular confidence amongst the citizenry and population. Turning bad debt into better debt may be one thing but turning around popular confidence into a feel good factor may well have all the tribulations of being an alchemist. Electoral gold when youth unemployment is around 50% will still likely remain the populist lead until the ‘man in the street’ can start to feel a real change.

Yes we do make things! Yet another recent example of our American cousins ‘adjusting’ the language has come out over the past few years - first we had the ‘verbalisation’ of offshore into ‘off shoring’ (manufacturing transferred from domestic production to overseas) and now we have ‘re-shoring’ which has got nothing to do with insurance but all to do with bringing the stuff back home again. The USA has been the first to see a major change in this trend as they have gone ‘fracking mad’ with shale gas being produced at an astonishing rate - and at an astonishing cost. This has been described as a real ‘game changer’ as it can fundamentally alter the cost base for many energy hungry industries. Now combine that with the time and cost of shipping, along with questions over IP (intellectual property) protection and certain quality controls, and a significant number of US companies have been pulling back their manufacturing from China and other eastern bases to somewhere closer to home. Another El Nino So is this a uniquely US issue? Well the answer is now a With equity markets looking buoyant certainly in the clear no. Most recently we have seen Antler, the maker US and even in the UK, it seems that despite political of those seemingly indestructible suitcases, back in the issues around Ukraine, Syria and the South China Sea, UK for the first time in twenty years. Production and investors are still keen to be investing. If you look at assembly apparently is going to be based in Rutland. the corporate figures they are still looking relatively Again this has not just been an issue of manufacturing positive. But if you are looking for a forecast, then cost, but also the closeness of production allowing maybe a warning that the next cycle of El Nino is likely shorter timescales for construction and assembly runs, to start in July might be something to watch. This as well as the ability to make shorter term changes and weather phenomenon can trigger drought in South adjustments. In a year when they are celebrating their East Asia and the Antipodes, and subsequently floods centenary, I think this is a great message which more in South America. should be appreciating. So what are the likely effects of this? Well historically However, they are not alone. A quick gander at a list of the weather will impact on production of all sorts of well known UK names seems to show that many have commodities from zinc and nickel (the latter already had the same thought. Marks & Spencer have their high because of the Indonesian government’s recent ‘Best of British’ collection (of course the ‘Made in UK’ action) as well as softer items such as coffee, cocoa, label used to be their standard), then we can add Fat cotton and soya beans. Face, Jaeger, ASOS and Arcadia, all of whom have been increasing their UK manufacturing. Justin Urquhart Stewart is one of the most recognisable Then there is another element to this which is the and trusted market commentators on television, radio number of new starts which have been beginning and in the press. Originally trained as a lawyer he has to make all manner of ‘stuff’ from shirts and other observed the retail market industry for 20 years whilst garments, to engineering. I have found a number of at Barclays Stockbrokers and developed a unique new businesses deciding to start up in the UK rather understanding of the market’s roles and benefits for the than go to the extra effort of getting a marginal saving private investor in the Far East - especially when you take into account all the extra costs. 26 Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

History

1914: Remembering Kingston at War

1914 saw the start of a war on a scale that had never been seen before. Over the next four years, millions of people across Europe and the wider world would be affected by this conflict and the residents of the Borough of Kingston upon Thames were no exception. As part of the commemorative events for the Centenary of the First World War and to recognise Kingston residents’ involvement in the war, Kingston Museum will be holding an exhibition from 16th May – 16th August. The exhibition will tell the often forgotten stories of the war: including those of men and women working long hours to produce planes used on the Western Front, young soldiers who enlisted to fight in Europe despite being under age, those who spoke out against the war, the nurses and doctors who cared for the injured officers returning from the Front to recuperate in Kingston and the families who came to Kingston from Belgium, looking for a safe place to live. The exhibition is a result of an original research project funded by HLF which seeks to research and record

the experiences of Kingston’s community in the war. It is supported by an appointed project leader, Lucy Harris, and a team of 15 volunteers who have put in an inordinate amount of hours and have discovered some thrilling histories. Explaining the importance of this exhibition, project leader, Lucy Harris said: “This compelling exhibition seeks to add local stories to the larger narrative concerning the war, reminding us that this was a war which involved members of the community who lived and worked in similar ways to us today.” Once the exhibition closes at the museum it will then tour to local libraries, ensuring its message reaches as wider audience as possible.

Community Maldens And Coombe Heritage Society

You may recall that about 18 months ago we announced the formation of the Maldens and Coombe Heritage Society, whose aim is to secure our heritage for future generations. We announced that we consider peoples’ memories are heritage as they, more than anything else, can tell of bygone days, people, shops, buildings, events which would otherwise be lost. Everyone has a story to tell about our ‘village’ and we set about procuring and recording any memories that people wanted to share. We are now in the happy and rewarding position to be able to share such memories with you, the inhabitants of The Village, as we announce the launch of our first compilation booklet which we hope will become a series and in so doing, shall record the history of the area as told by the people who actually lived here. The booklet comprises over 50 recollections, told on 74 pages and with local photos it will take you back to a time when days were known by the chore of the day for instance baking day, shopping day, ironing day and, of course, before you could iron, was washday. The launch date is Saturday, 10th May and the booklet shall be available from 12.30 to 3.00pm at the New Malden Methodist Church. Members of the Society will be in attendance, including contributors to the booklet and Robin Gill, who is the font (or should that be The Fountain?) of local history knowledge. The cost is £3.50 which has been priced with minimal profit margin such that we hope it is affordable to those who still have their recollections to tell us. The minimal profit made will assist in the production of the next edition. Your contribution will therefore help us to continue compiling and archiving our local history. In addition to the launch various members of the society will assist with guidance on family history research, will provide details of our meetings and, of course, will explain the ongoing Recollections project and how you and or people you may know could help us by providing memories of life here in days of old and not so old. It is extremely important that people do not simply think of the ‘olden’ days and ignore the 70s, 80s and 90s as these will, in time, become the ‘olden’ days! Please don’t worry if you cannot attend the

44

launch, you will not lose out on the opportunity of purchasing a copy of the booklet. Simply contact us at The Maldens and Coombe Heritage Society, 135C South Lane, New Malden KT3 5HQ Tel: 020 8949 3157 Email: maldensandcoombehs@gmail.com providing your contact details and we shall advise you of where you can obtain a copy or we shall arrange to post one to you following receipt of payment for the booklet and postage. Of course, if you wish to contribute to the next edition, or know someone with a story of the Maldens and Coombe area to tell then we would love to hear from you and would simply ask that you drop us a line at recollectionsmchg@gmail.com or write to “Recollections 2” c/o 52 Blagdon Road, New Malden KT3 4AE. Finally, don’t forget that we meet regularly and if you would like to come along one evening and hear one of our guest speakers or just see what we do just ask us for further details, we are a friendly group. We look forward to meeting you and helping us preserve the heritage and historical knowledge of the area. Julian McCarthy (MACHS)

Schools

Christ Church New Malden Primary new build People who have travelled along Elm Road at some point over the last six months will have seen the rapid growth of our new junior building.

We have certainly watched each step with anticipation and, of course, trepidation. Now, there is an impressive, modern, blue and white structure with flashes of primary colours on the windows and the walls. Inside, the state-of-the -art technology matches the modern exterior, with windows which automatically open and shut, solar panels to generate power, a large hall with a powerful projection and sound system and lights which can be dimmed at the press of a button. This building was not even a pipe dream three years ago, when it was discovered that the junior building was deteriorating rapidly and the children needed to move to new premises. What

followed were many meetings to seek finances and planning permission; first for the school to decant to the playing fields, and then to build a new building. However, the final outcome has certainly exceeded our hopes. Not only have we managed to create exciting teaching and learning spaces with group rooms between every pair of classes for additional challenge and support work, but we have also managed to create additional spaces for music and creative work. Indeed, we now have an individual music tuition room and a class music space in recognition of the importance of music within the school. After a passionate campaign by parents, we have also been able to add a library with comfortable, coloured seats to promote a love of reading and sharing books. We would like to thank members of the community

Gardening

Plotting a vegetable garden by Pippa Greenwood

Even the smallest garden can find space to grow vegetables. Start now and you can enjoy delicious home-grown salads all summer long. Producing useful quantities of your own vegetables doesn’t take up as much space as you might imagine. There’s a lot you can plant out or grow from seed right now that will give you some super-tasty, succulent, and top-quality salads in just a few weeks’ time. And salad leaves grown in ornamental pots can be as decorative as they are nutritious. Before you get sowing or planting, choose the right containers. Big ones are easier to maintain than small ones; and of course bigger pots mean more produce. Go for something of at least 30cm (12in) in diameter, larger if possible. As salad crops tend to be pretty short-term there’s no need to spend a fortune on compost. Ideally choose a good-quality multi-purpose compost, but you can get perfectly acceptable results with the contents of a growing-bag. I find the quality of the compost in these isn’t all that brilliant, but for the time you need it – and provided you keep it well-fertilised – it’ll be adequate. If you grow your own salad leaves you can get precisely the mix you like best. There are plenty of eye-catching lettuces such as the frilly Lollo, either a gorgeous bright-green standard Lollo a burgundytinged Lollo Rosso or a mixture of both. Treat them as cut-and-come-again crops, snipping off the leaves as you want them but not cutting into to the base, then they’ll put out new shoots and keep cropping for longer. Baby beet leaves are a popular salad ingredient, too. Choose a variety like Bull’s Blood for the prettiest leaves or grow any of the standard varieties, and you’ll also get a great-tasting root crop later on. I generally harvest the young leaves a few at a time but let the plant produce a root too. There are still plenty of tomato plants in the shops now, but hunt carefully to find the ones that are still in top condition. If you choose an outdoor variety it can be grown in a pot on its own, and if you have a big enough container you can grow some other salad ingredients around the edge of the container. If you’re after some fire in your cooking, a chilli pepper thrives in a pot in a warm and very sheltered spot as do sweet peppers. Fresh herbs can make a salad more interesting too.

48

Choose your favourites and either grow them in a dedicated herb pot with extra grit in the compost for good drainage, or even consider popping a few in with your main crops. Vegetables, like most plants, do best in a relatively warm spot with plenty of sun, so site your containers carefully. You want them to be easily accessible from the kitchen, but it’s more important to ensure they’re sheltered from the wind yet still get enough sun. You may prefer to raise some of your crops in pots and grow them on a bit before planting them out. The garden containers will always be full and looking their best, even while you’re harvesting them. The new plantings will very quickly blend in with the old, and all summer long you’ll have a garden that’s as pleasing to the eye as it is to the tastebuds. Coombe Hill holds two big fundraisers to keep kids in the swim. Coombe Hill students, parents and teachers are undertaking two big fundraisers in June to raise money for much needed repairs to the school swimming pool. On 21 June from 6-8pm, six brave teams will be swimming a mile (the equivalent to 64 lengths of the Kingsfisher pool in Kingston) to kick-start the slush fund for repairs. ‘Swimming is the only skill we teach in school that could save a life,’ explains Coombe Hill Infants Head Teacher Janet Berry, ‘so we are really keen to keep the pool open and our children swimming.’ The infants teams, made up of intrepid parents include the Marvellous Mini-beasts (reception, The Woodland Wonders (y1), The Big Cat Crusaders and last but not least a joint teacher and governors team. Swimming for the junior school will be a team of kids who learnt to swim at the school (many of whom now swim for Kingston Royals) and a team of junior parents who are all fired up to give the Infants a ‘swim’ for their money. There will be pool-side seats for 50 spectators on the day and refreshments on offer. And there may be a few surprises in store – the Big Cat dads are promising to wear tarzan-style leopard skin swimsuits if someone pledges £100. If you’d like to support the teams and the school’s efforts to keep the pool open for school swimming you can donate at www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/ Swimamileforcoombehill One week later on 28 June – Coombe Hill will be holding their ‘Get Happy’ Summer Fair – from 12-4.

NADFAS workshops at Burlington Junior School

With the generous help of Kingston Decorative and Fine Arts Society, Burlington Junior School children were transformed into theatre designers recently with a series of workshops held at the school. The fruits of their labour were exhibited at the Rose Theatre Kingston, where Riverside Opera performed their Romeo and Juliet, May 14th to 17th. Year 5 classes were given the chance to work with an expert in the field of theatre design, Anett Black. At Burlington we believe it’s important to bring design and art professionals into the school to provide role models and to expose children to the vocabulary of the real art and design world.

Introducing some of them to opera for the first time, she played them the music and explained the roles that each designer in a production team would have; set designer, costume designer and prop or mask designer and how they would all need to work together to produce a cohesive design. Having recently studied The Tudors and visited Hampton Court, it was decided that their Opera designs be set in that era, neatly tying in with the 450 anniversary of the great Bard’s birthdate. Through team work and negotiation each group of children produced a ‘world’ for their opera. Model sets were dressed with fabric hangings, tapestries and columns. Stage furniture was modelled from clay and and costumes were delicately collaged or painted. Masks were cut into fantastical shapes and painted and adorned with sequins, feathers and beads. The children enjoyed the hands on crafting aspect of the workshop, producing work of an extremely high standard. But most importantly they were exposed to the design challenges and creative briefs that a professional theatre designer would encounter and they met those with the verve, creativity and originality that Burlington children are well known for!

1 tbsp fresh chopped coriander Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 Thread the chicken cubes and onion wedges onto four wooden skewers. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and brush all over with sunflower oil. Cook under a medium preheated grill for 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken is just cooked through. 2 Meanwhile, boil the sweet potatoes in a large pan of lightly salted boiling water for 10-15 minutes, or until tender. Drain well, then mash with the butter and crème fraiche until smooth. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 3 Place the chilli sauce, honey and vinegar in a small pan and simmer for 1-2 minutes until syrupy. Brush half the glaze all over the chicken kebabs and grill for a further 1-2 minutes. 4 Serve the kebabs on the sweet potato mash with the rest of the hot glaze drizzled over. Garnish with fresh chopped coriander. TIP For an extra fiery flavour add some finely chopped fresh red chilli pepper to the glaze.

The Better Life Better Life 24 - All Change! by Derek Thompson

The arrival of each new season is a constant reminder that change is the only constant. Well, that and the increasing cost of birdseed. For enthusiastic eco-amateurs like me, the garden is a living, breathing thing - plants need to be replaced, borders occasionally reclaimed from the wilderness and, sometimes when we least expect it, losses faced.

Mint is once more flavour of the month, with the addition of apple mint to the set. This is mainly because we visited a Lebanese restaurant that uses mint in its wonderful pressed juices, which I hope to emulate. Meanwhile, indoors, Anne made an executive decision (i.e. while I was out at work) and took down the curtains. These have now been converted into a rather fetching pair of Roman blinds and the remaining material left over was used to reupholster the ottoman. Ever the competitive one I rose to the challenge, finding someone who could use the carrier bags of old bubble wrap that I’ve been storing in the attic for longer than I care to admit. Now, I just need someone who’s desperate for 25 used Jiffy bags! Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. His writing blog can be found at www. alongthewritelines.blogspot.com and he is also a regular at strictlywriting.blogspot.com

Having said farewell to three trees in the past (a withered willow that seemed to subsist solely as a home for honey fungus, a neglected ash that our predecessors left pushing against a neighbour’s garage for years, and a lawson’s cypress whose trunk had begun to split in two), I did not relish the loss of a fourth. Even Anne reminding me that it was a leylandii after all, growing so close to the house that it tapped on the roof in strong winds, failed to reassure me. But gardening is sometimes about doing what is necessary and not just what looks pretty. The tree feller (our third, ironically) was given three simple instructions: 1. Avoid the phone line to the right and the electricity cable to the left. 2. Reduce the tree to log-sized pieces or slices that I can hatchet up once they’ve seasoned. 3. Don’t drop any branches on our neighbours’ garage roofs. In any other circumstances, two out of three would have been a reasonable result. The damage wasn’t extensive, limited to just a couple of corrugated plastic panels. I suppose it was an opportunity to meet our new neighbour, and for her to meet her new open-air garage roof. Thankfully, she took it in good spirits and our lumberjack extraordinaire took responsibility for the restoration. We plan to drill holes in the leylandii stump and insert mushroom plugs to see if we can grow them (it’s amazing what you can find on the Internet). Other parts of the garden have also changed. The mini meadow experiment has been extended, but rather than use seed-impregnated paper sheets again, we opted for yellow rattle to control the grass last year, scattering collected wild seeds in the spaces once the rattle had died back. That was augmented with some heritage seeds, including cowslip, lady’s bedstraw, wild carrot and musk mallow. And yes, I did read that off the packet. Not that we’re solely traditionalists. Last year’s nursery bought Himalayan blue poppies were a great success (and the envy of our neighbours), but we took the collected seeds out of the freezer quite late this year. They like partial shade and dislike the heat. I suppose the clue is in the name! 56 Please remember to mention the Village Voice when you speak to our advertisers

A Malden Man A New Town Square For New Malden! by Raj Randhawa

New Malden continues to see new developments springing up all over, from the flats behind the New Malden Centre to a similar development on the Kingston Road near to the library. It seems that the property boom is in full swing and developers are back with a vengeance. Whether the continued desire to turn vacant land in to yet more housing will actually benefit the local community is another matter. Is there a point where we might reach a critical masswhere there might be too much new housing in a given area? It’s worth bearing this in mind when we look to another vacant site in New Malden. Importantly,

it’s in a very central location, meaning whatever purpose it serves in the future, it will have a major impact for the whole community. I’m talking about the Cocks Crescent site behind the Lidl store on Blagdon Road. The vacant site is a relatively large area, which straddles Cocks Crescent and Beverley Road and sits just behind the High St. Despite the fact that the immediate area has already seen the erection of a large block of flats, other potential developments are on the cards- the Spillers building could well be converted in to 77 flats as well as other office and residential conversions and developments. A new hotel is also muted above the Lidl building, which is also likely to include an element of housing, facing the Cocks Crescent area. The Cocks Crescent site is one of the last remaining medium to large sites left in the area and so it presents the local council and the residents a once in a lifetime opportunity to create something special- a lasting legacy, which through harnessing commercial momentum can attract further investment

and help regenerate the High St and ensure it thrives and remains an important central hub for the wider community. One of the best ideas currently being put forward by residents is the creation of a new urban square, which is something that would benefit all residents and create something that the whole of New Malden could be proud of. As a result of the increase in residential developments, footfall in the area is set to increase further, resulting in more people using the High Street. The proposition of a new town square then, could well be exactly what’s needed and deliver dividends to the local community by providing a central square, (which New Malden is sorely missing). It would no doubt attract investment in to the area, including the High Street, resulting in job creation and turn a derelict site in to something that the whole community would actively benefit from, leading to greater confidence in the area. A new town square might potentially include a single screen cinema (similar to the

Wimbledon Curzon), retailers, restaurants and there’s also enough space for some additional housing. It might even be viable to rehouse the library in this central location, making it more accessible to all, as well as a whole host of other community requirements. In order for such a vision to succeed, it requires the full backing of all local councilors and the full support of Kingston Council. (Kingston Council is currently updating their Local Neighbourhood Plan for Cocks Crescent). We have a truly great opportunity to achieve the success seen in other local areas, where local residents associations have worked collaboratively with their Councils to initiate and push through local projects, which have directly benefitted the local community. It’s worth noting examples of other local areas, which have benefitted from this type of progressive local development. In Wandsworth for example, the Old York Road was only ever a ’mini’ High Street, which has since been completely revamped and reinvigorated. The South Side centre has had some major

redevelopment, leading to the introduction of new retailers. The overall regeneration there was dependent on the improvements to the South Side centre, which in turn attracted the necessary commercial investment in to the area required to regenerate the Old York Road. Subsequently, these changes have turned the area in to a far more pleasant hub for the local community. Raynes Park is another great example of how the right local planning and development decisions can have a massively positive impact on an area. Raynes Park was recently voted the best performing High Street in the UK, partly because it has been redeveloped following clear guidance by the Raynes Park Association and Merton Council. Virtually all of the High Street shops are occupied and there is a real sense of optimism in the area that things are progressing positively. The overall vision has seen vast improvements in many of their public spaces. In many areas of the UK, residents associations have begun influencing their local councils planning policy, via Local Neighbourhood Plans. These plans are developed by the local community under the Localism Act and they

enable the community to steer development in the direction they wish. The Neighbourhood Plan subsequently becomes approved council planning policy and is used as a point of reference to gauge future planning applications for the area. This is potentially a great way of ensuring that the Cocks Crescent regeneration is ultimately one of quality and vision and one, which benefits the whole of the New Malden community. So, now to the small matter of money- who will pay for this grand development? With the right vision, ensuring the best decisions are made, the value of the Cocks Crescent site could increase dramatically. When the council engages developers and considers the value of the site, (which they have an obligation to maximise), a clear vision for the site will make the site more appealing and reduce the perceived risks. The subsequent jump in the value of the site would go straight into the council coffers. In addition, further income would be generated from business rates and council tax, if the site were developed as a mixed-use site- commercial and housing. In short, the more successful the High

Street, the more shop spaces will be occupied and the more money the council will generate. If we do take this unique opportunity to turn the Cocks Crescent site in to something aspirational and beneficial for the whole community, it may turn out to be an ultimately transformational decision for the whole area. The potential impact of the decisions taken for the Cocks Crescent site, could well be felt for generations to come. I certainly know what kind of place I would like my children and grandchildren to grow up in.
